Kingston, Jamaica – Usain Bolt reported for his first day on the job as Digicel’s Chief Speed Officer on Tuesday, September 13. And to mark his first day, Usain’s home was officially upgraded to the fastest in the world.

Bolt, who has been an ambassador for the brand since 2003 and is now a global Lifetime Ambassador, was given the royal treatment upon arrival at Digicel’s regional headquarters in downtown Kingston. After parking in his specially-designated CSO parking spot, he was greeted with much fanfare by the entire Digicel staff.

His day consisted of unveiling his very own über-modern Usain Bolt Speed Lab which will be used to continue developing new and innovative ways of delivering high-speed internet and connectivity technology to customers. To ensure that Bolt could also continue on the fast path after his 9 to 5, the company also announced a 10GB (10,000MB) Internet upgrade for the legendary sprinter’s home – making it the fastest home in the world.

Peter Lloyd, Digicel Group Marketing Director, said; “The world’s fastest man deserves to have the fastest home in the world.”

Also on his list of things to do was to experience first-hand the role of a customer care agent. In addition to resolving their queries, he gave one lucky customer a free nine month upgrade to a Digicel LTE plan and another, an upgrade to the fastest home internet speed (200MBps) also for nine months.

Excited about his role, Bolt said; “I’m here to ensure that everything runs smoothly and fast of course, so customers will begin to see improvements. Outside of the office, I am working on opening a sports clinic in Jamaica. Injury has always been an issue for athletes so we need better care.”

Further explaining Bolt’s role as CSO, Lloyd said; “Usain will be taking his unique understanding of speed and translating that into Digicel’s products and services. This ensures that our customers will always have access to the fastest and latest in technology. Ensuring that his legacy lives on, Usain will also be passing on his passion for track and field through various philanthropic activities directed towards youth.”

The CSO capped off his day with a special lunch hour cocktail where he met and interacted with some of his fellow employees from across the business.

Always one to end on a high note, Bolt remarked; “I prefer a 9.58 to a 9 to 5 but I think I can run with this. Big up to my Digicel family.”

I very happy for BOLT and his sport accomplishment.

But the issue I have is BOLT could do much better for his country by becoming a Business Entrepreneur, with the likes to attract any major manufacturing entity in the WORLD to do a joint business venture in Jamaica. Where he could be part owner and create more employment rather than work for Digicel as CSO.

He just an employee and does not own ANY part of DIGICEL.

BOLT does not need Digicel but Digicel needs him. Therefore taking this CSO job mainly serve Digicel and don’t have a wider reach to create more employment in JA or to empower himself as a business owner.

I wish him the best but I hope he can see the light soon ….and venture out on his own to forming a corporate with the potential to attain Digicel yearly revenue of 1.2B(USD).

Why does a millionaire have to WORK but not for himself? I wonder…?

Emmy check how many sports millionaires in the U.S. gone broke because they did not have a life, they got bored some turned to drugs. The man chooses to work for a company that sponsors him whether he is a billionaire or not that’s his choice. Michael Jordan was an ambassador for Nike and worked for Nike. Bolt has investments and owns businesses across Jamaica, the region and the world. Eever heard of ‘Bolts Fast Track Sports Lounge/Bar. I am trying to get a franchise set up in Dominica so while Bolt working for Digi I will be working for Bolt but more importantly can you imagine Bolt through Digi visiting his franchise in DA what that would mean to the youth and people of Dominica.

He does not need the money. He is already a millionaire. You do know businesses go bankrupt. Owning one has its obstacles and struggles. Furthermore, accepting Digicel’s offer which is honoring him for lifetime, even though it means using his name, this is his appreciation and gratitude to Digicel for the financial support he received throughout those years.
Digicel will pay him with royalties for using his name. Digicel did not let him down when he was a so-called nobody then. Digicel believed in him and also prodded him on.
Aside from his sporting fame, he is a household name worldwide and well-respected, even more due to Digicel. He will not disappear into oblivion as so many others.
In the meantime he has other plans to help his people as he stated. He will be a busy man otherwise. Let’s wish him well.

There is something called brand development and marketing. This is what Digital is aiming for here. Bolt will be a digital brand ambassador. The title chief speed officer is just acknowledging Bolts title as the world’s fastest man.
