Chris Gayle has told a media conference that his remarks toward female journalist Mel McLaughlin during Monday night’s Big Bash League game were “just a joke” that had been taken out of proportion, but walked off when told the interview had made her uncomfortable.
Speaking at Melbourne airport, Gayle said his comments, in which he asked McLaughlin for a drink and said “don’t blush, baby”, were a “simple joke” and were “not meant to be disrespectful”.
Gayle has been fined $10,000 for the incident and his club, the Melbourne Renegades, has formally apologised to McLaughlin.
Told that McLaughlin was upset about the incident, Gayle said at the airport: “There wasn’t anything meant to be disrespectful or offensive to Mel. If she felt that way, I’m really sorry for that.”
You people ain’t serious are you??!!
Pictures don’t lie. It’s clear from the picture showed above that Miss McLaughlin did NOT welcome Chris Gayle’s heavy handed flirtation techniques. And to make it worse, he’s behaving like a petulant little boy who’s mad that the pretty girl don’t want to play with him?? smh.
Gayle and other professional athletes need to learn to separate their careers from their d*@^s.
He should have been suspended at the very least.
Chris Gayle is no role model, at least if the latest reports about his antics are anything to go by. The Daily Mail reports this morning that apparently he exposed himself to a female worker during the World Cup in Sydney last year. She went to the dressing room for some food when Chris Gayle dropped his towel, exposing part of his genitals and asked her: “Are you looking for this?”.
(see Daily Mail of today under headline “Chris Rogers criticises Chris Gayle as damaging allegations surface that Wes Indian cricketer exposed himself to woman during last year’s World Cup”)
Food in a male dressing room? The advert she saw on tv where the granny and her son was having Campbell soup is not real!
Do we know one minute to another, what we will say to others?
Life is an ongoing growing and learning process. We should learn diplomacy, how to get along with people, how to treat them and under certain circumstances, what to say.
There are times some people make comments, assuming others will be pleased whereas they may be shocked and feel offended. We must ascertain if the person really meant it prior to retaliating and in this case charging him for words he had no control over. They were spontaneous.
Some men may be in a jovial mood and when they see a woman may make a comment which she considers inappropriate.
All of us, man and woman will experience this sometime. As for me, if certain comments are stated to me, I also love to say, “Who do you think you are talking to?” I may go so far and say, “Know your place” and go on my way. Or give them a serious look without saying a word. They will get the message and later apologize. This clears the air.
This may very well be. He may not have meant any harm; was not rude. Some people do not comprehend others and their culture. Know that our very own do not comprehend us much more for someone of a different culture and under that circumstance.
Some men like to say, “Hi Baby” but do not mean a thing about it. It is simply a form of greeting. It could be difficult to tell if they are joking, serious or sarcastic.
It would be wise to respond, even jokingly, “Who are you calling baby?” or “What prompted you to say that?” The person could be surprised and apologize. Everyone deserves that. However, some may not be pleased if you respond in that manner.
Some may not ask questions. They get angry, judge and condemn.
These days and what with all this gender issues, etc., people are sensitive about what is said to them..
As the saying, “There is a time and place for everything.”
Some people must be careful what they say, to whom and under what circumstances.
((‘Gayle said his comments, in which he asked McLaughlin for a drink and said “don’t blush, baby”, were a “simple joke” and were “not meant to be disrespectful”)). Someone cannot dictate to anyone how to feel when they are being hurt or abused or invaded, but give me a break hear.. this woman saw an opportunity to put a black man down and she spared no time in doing so.. So many times people being interviewed have made remarks to certain reporters and it went of as or joke. Or is it a matter of our people not knowing where to draw the line. Nonetheless, this is absurd. Seems she need the money anyway.
I suppose that you do not seem to even realise that you are doing the typical defensive action of blaming the VICTIM. The reporter was just doing her job and did not deserve to be embarrassed in public . He has not learned RESPECT . I am sure that he has success with this Pick-up method NOT!
Gayle didn’t mean any harm or disrespect in any way, is McLaughlin saying to us that was the very first time in her career she had a male in sports or other wise utter words a long those line to her where she laugh or smile it off, their was no disrespect intended. Gayle apologized so that should be the end of it. I don’t agree that she just wanted money I just hope that’s not so.
I had never commented on the topic before so why would you make such a statement .
So, is asking someone out sexist? Hmmmm. wow.
Gayle thought that he was in Dominica, which is not a real country,so anything goes. This Gayle is out of order. He should have had to pay US$10 000 000.00 THESE ARE THE TYPE OF PEOPLE WHO CAUSED West Indies Cricket Team to be where it is now.At the bottom of the ladder.
It just goes to show how Gale has no class, no finess an is just a country boy. If you wish to chat up a woman you do so discretely. I have no sympathy for him, he feel so ashamed that he says it was all a joke.
Our cricketers are bling artists without class or breeding. It shows in their demeanour and, unfotunately in their inconsistent form of play.
You are right I’m afraid. Cricket used be called the gentlemen’s game but now it ismostly played by ill mannered and undisciplined rogues and vagabonds, who think they are God’s gift to mankind and too full of themselves.
This is a real country, not a Skeritt’s Dominica. Can you imagine what would have happened, if during the interview, Gail had gotten mad because he was criticized and told the reporter to arlay suce sel.
damn she fine tho. I don’t blame the brother
stupes Mel …u think Gayle not good for you. Well again the black guys are wrong they always want to make white girls feel good. and then ends up in trouble. UC OJ Simpson
peaceful i think you miss the point, i bet if he had approached her in a different forum she would have been more cordial in her response….NOT ON A TELEVISION INTERVIEW WHERE THE WORLD IS WATCHING he put her in a very comprimising position.
People, especially professionals need to know when to speak!!!!!!!
too many black men think like u that’s why they get in roro like OJ simpson and Gayle, sad
Wen black man call allu zor paca waypon
$10000 FOR MAKING A BREAK??? hmm so if he had touched her now?? well when the police officers and pple of high refute make break on pple they should charge them too….just saying
LOL, that is ridiculous! She is beautiful! There was no disrespect in asking to have drink, or asking her to not blush. On the other hand, don’t forget what’s happening to Bill Cosby
some people really don’t know what sexual harassment is….the men of d.a are prime examples they think that they can tell you what they want and hold your hand and touch you anytime they feel like
Gayle need to be more professional, there is a time and place for everything!!!!!!
He should not have done it on a public interview and that wasn’t the time and place to do such thing. Gayle remember you are a black man.
My brother you all must come and live in Dominica its the only Is.land in the world where we take every thing for a JOKE you would have gotten away with that if it was in Dominica some of our girls would just laugh and life gos on am saying to people if you looking for JOKES SPOKES make Dominica your home. some months ago in T&T the government suspended a minister by using a picture with a guy looking like that same minister smoking weed and having fun. so i sent him a message to ask him to move over to Dominica he would have no problem as a minister he can do as he please and we have no problem with that. ONLY IN SWEET FREE DOMINICA YOU CAN MAKE ANY JOKE LOL LOL LOL LOL
Its not the first time that he has done this Last year during the CPL he was disrespecting to a female reporter also’ I guess he feels he is a superstar he can get away with it. maybe in his own back yard but not in places like Australia,
And even fine to? What a bunch of hypocrisy
These West Indian men take their sexual harassment EVERYWHERE they go. chah!
Many Caribbean men need to realise that the way they carry on is not internationally acceptable. There is a time and a place for sending words to a woman and that was not one of them. Too many Caribbean men think from their trousers and not their head. This is one thing ruining the society and stops us from progressing in the way we need to. Mr Gayle has to remember he is also a role model and is representing a region and not only JA and himself. Dyam fool.
Good for him… lol
Hypocrite them people hypocrite stupes
They think everybody wants them. Serve him right lol
