DFP mourns Swanston Carbon

The late Carbon taken from the DFP manifesto

It is with deepest regret and profound sadness that the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) mourns the sudden and untimely passing of Mr. Swanston Carbon who up to the time of his death was an active and long standing member of the Dominica Freedom Party.

Mr. Carbon joined the Dominica Freedom Party in its early days remaining loyal and very involved in all Party activities. A Party stalwart, he was never afraid to speak his mind on the many issues confronting his country which he served in several capacities.

He served as a Senator in the Dominica House of Assembly from 1980 to 1995 with the Dominica Freedom Party Government. He also served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly from 1990 to 1995 and was a former Member of the Roseau City Council serving also on a number of Statutory Boards and Advisory Committees.

Mr. Carbon unsuccessfully contested the Roseau South Constituency in the 2000 General Elections but his commitment and steadfastness to the Dominica Freedom Party never wavered (or remained unwavering). He kept a keen analytical eye on political and national development issues and his meticulous dissection of Government Budgetary Estimates was legendary.

Mr. Carbon will always be remembered as a great team player who will be sorely missed not only by Members and Supporters of the Dominica Freedom Party but by all those who knew him throughout the length and breadth of Dominica.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Corinthia, his Mother, children as well as his extended family, many relatives and friends.

We send our condolences to Swanton’s wife, children and extended family. Swanston was our neighbor from 1990 and we came to know him as a man of integrity and a family man who looked out for all the neighborhood kids. We hope his kids will be consoled by the fact that he was a great father who did the best for them. He was a true uniter, always ready with a smile and a quick joke to lighten up even the most stressful situation. Thank you Swanston for the part you played in shaping the lives of the young ones growing up around you and the older folks as well, by your example. It takes a village.
    RIP Mr. Carbs.

I suppose during times such as these, the grieving family of the deceased is what that should be uppermost in our minds. Ah las! We cannot resist the urge to begin pointing fingers and casting aspersions.

Mr. Carbon served Dominica well. he was a refrigeration technician, a business, a social worker given his involvement in a number of social clubs here (ROTARY). he was a politician and in his heyday was very skillful at campaigning particularly when he spoke on the platform. Those of us who associated with him during the reign of the Fredom Party looked to him for inspiration whenever he came to speak. It was the UWP who gave him the name “Political hatchet man” in much the same way they have gone after the senior counsel. Today the same UWP is singing a different supper. Even Bosso will recall that.

But to his family (wife and children) I wish to express my condolences. I pray for God’s strength and wisdom for you all in this difficult time. I know seem over bearing for now. But trust in God.

Once my friend is laid to rest I will write a commentary on the subject – ” staying the tide, through thick and thin” as I have much to say about those moralists among us who see the devil in someone whenever he holds a different opinion particularly on things political.

Rest in peace Mr. Carbs. Your troubles are over indeed.

You should have given him his roses before he passed on now he wouldn’t be able to read or make any comment on the subject ** Staying the tide, through thick and thin **
      Gone but not forgotten.

Swanston did to the end remain a man of integrity –did not accept the role of being bought or become a sycophant !
He was a freedomite to the end…no begging alms at the ministry ..no sell out ..others may have gone that way and though he and Charles Savarin and Boston were of the very few who mannned the freedom house …selling thier weekend chiken wih Mona PIPERhe remained steadfast !
not even the state house and its appeal ..impressed him nor did he seek to follow the footstep of his erstwhile brethen who succumbed to the easy joy of sellling out ..
this must be a moment of reflection for the president of Dominica

Mr Carbon was a man of tremendous character, a man I had great respect for. He stood his ground on solid principle and will apologize whenever he thinks it is deserved. I was very much shocked to hear of his ultimate passing. He served his country with distinction socially, economically, technically , religiously and politically. Well done brother swanston, may you be reward by our father in heaven. I extend my deepest sympathies to his entire family, friends and the Dominica Freedom Party. You have done well in your life on earth. you certainly did not bury the talents the lord had given you , now the lord has called you home may you rest in his eternal peace .
