On February 28, 2018, Dominican born attorney, Garvin Gauss Ambrose, was sworn in as a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, D.C.
Ambrose, who was born in the Village of Mahaut, became an attorney in 2005.
He is currently an Assistant State’s Attorney and Chief of the Bureau of Administrative Services for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in Chicago, Illinois.
Ambrose is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University (B.S., 2001) and Thomas M. Cooley Law School (J.D., 2005).
He attended the Mahaut Primary School before migrating to Canada at seven. He remains Dominican at heart.
“As a proud Dominican, I try to take every opportunity to uplift our country while overseas,” he said.
The Supreme Court Bar allows lawyers to practice before the US’ highest court.
Congratulations young man
I may not know you personally but I am very happy for you and that you carry something of Dominica. Big you up. Go places. Reach for the stars
I’ve learned that when you highlight the misinformation of some, you give credence to their positions; therefore, I will simply say “Thank You” to all of you for your comments (well wishers and others).
I am happy to enlighten those of you who are actually interested in the correct process from my personal experience, instead
of obtaining incomplete information through Google or second hand.
Jurisprudence (JD) simply means the study, knowledge, or science of law in the United States, more broadly associated with the “philosophy” of law. Legal philosophy has many branches, with four types being the most common. The most prevalent form of jurisprudence seeks to analyze, explain and criticize entire bodies of law, ranging from contract to Tort to constitutional law.
First: Legal encyclopedias, law reviews, and law school text-books frequently contain this type of jurisprudential scholarship .
The second type of jurisprudence compares, and contrasts law with other fields of knowledge, such as literature, economics, religion, and the social science. The purpose of this type of study is to enlighten each field of knowledge by sharing insights that have proved to be important important in advancing imperative features of similar discipline!
The third type of jurisprudence rises fundamental questions about law, such questions seeks to find the historical, moral,…
Finally, the third type of jurisprudence rises fundamental questions about law; such questions seek to find the historical, moral, cultural, or practical legal concept: i. e., The common written in 1881.
There are other types and areas of jurisprudence, I simply chose three types to focus on.
Note: Laws in America are written based on the common law system dating back to the British Magna Carta; laws in Dominica and the rest of the British Commonwealth of nations, though independent are written based on the common law system.
Dominican to the bone; you are an uneducated idiot, the more stupid people like you are, it is the loudest you scream haters!
As long as some did not agree to the foolishness that you believe they are tagged haters. Call me a hater too, but the information I are profound; and cannot be refuted not even by Jurisprudence, who should know I am correct!
Haters are always left behind that’s wat u are .
well done sir, one day maybe you can come back to DA and teach what you’ve learnt abroad.
Sir can you help the people in dominica to bring a class a tion lawsuit against insurance companies like first domestic insurance fprthie bogus insurance that they have sold to the citizens of dominica and who cannot get a cent for their insurance claims because first domestic is using act of God clause to deny most claims especially auto insurance
Shut up fool, because one practices law in America, that does not make them a lawyer in Dominica. AS a matter of fact if I am practice law in California, where I reside, went to law school, and obtain a law degree, by passing the Bar. I cannot simply leave California, and go to New York, or any other state, and say here I am I will take your case to court.
If a lawyer in America wish to practice in every law in every State in America, they have to pass the Bar every state they wish to practice. the same as a medical doctor. So, don’t rise you hope; that is false hope!
If he could go Dominica and practice Law, guys like Gaberial Christian brother to Dr. Sam in Dominica would have already done that: Gabeial owns and operate a law firm in Maryland, and mind you there are lots of Dominican born, and children born to Dominican parent practicing law in America! Even one of my sisters is a paralegal!
congratulation and all the best to you. Good luck.
Congrats son of the soil. All Dcans especially those from Mahaut will continue to cheer you on. Stay focused and humble always.
Assertive like Ma Maria!
Sorry, but what benifit is that to Dominica? That is the man’s personal acheivement, any U.S. lawyer who has been an active member of a state bar for three years and is currently in good standing with the state qualifies for admission to argue cases before the US supreme court ……
Haters are always left behind that’s wat u are .
Everything for you people is “haters”??? That’s the new buzzword now when you have no proper come-back to to a valid statement??
The blogger is very right! While I am happy for Mr. Ambrose’s success such as it is, it is not of benefit to Dominica in any way, shape or form.
So, yes his family wants praise and glory for him by sending DNO the article and picture about his success. However, at a time like this when Dominica needs all her skilled sons, this article is meaningless to us.
Sorry, NOT sorry.
Irma, that person I believe to be from Wesley, is a damn fool you know, every who owns a smart phone or a computer who get their fifteen minuets of fame on DNO Website are not scholastically or educationally smart.
That is the reason why all of them write garbage using fictitious names!
They like saying thank you for all sorts of nonsense, and parsing God for Roosevelt Skerrit who keeps them in poverty, one of them is suggesting the JD come to Dominica, and sue insurance company, when the man is not a lawyer in Dominica, his JD has no value in more than fifty of the states in America, never mind Dominica!
That is not true, I will not go into detail, because we Dominicans know more about the American system than what we know about Dominica, but your concept is baloney, you do not know what the hell you are talking about!
you all know so much, yet the knowledge you pretend to have, why don’t you use it to make Dominica a better place? Talking fart helps not. That guy left Dominica went to Canada as a kid.
Now he is he made Chicago his home, I doubt Dominica matters much to him the same as all of us professionals who could never make a living in Dominica, if he returns home to practice law he will die from starvation, if I return the same will happen to me.
Fix Dominica, move Skerrit out, and let other try, that should be your main concern
Don’t be a hater lets lift up one of our own congrats to him and his family in Mahaut
Proud Of you You Made us Proud
God bless Dominica
Blessing for you
Stay humble
Dominica
I also note that he has a J.D. but does not call himself a Doctor. No kaka chess here. Stay humble indeed my friend.
“The Supreme Court Bar allows lawyers to practice before the US’ highest court. ”
DNO sometimes before writing certain comments perhaps it would be appropriate the facts on certain matters. If that guy just became a lawyer in 2005, unless he is exceptional I don’t think he would allowed to present an argument in the highest court of the land as of yet!
There is a certain protocol, which involves successes in certain areas of law. I know this for a fact, because I have a friend, and lawyer who was recently invited to argue, certain case in the highest court in the nation, and that is not called practice law before the supreme court in DC!
Francisco, to be a Jurist Doctor is no easy feat my friend and I am absolutely sure this intelligent and learned lawyer has Excel academically and obviously meet the criteria to be in that position, so sticking with DNO on this. It’s like a consultant gynaecologist or Doctor you may rarely see in a hospital but is qualified to a Presidential advisor or Chancellor of some sort they do have these folks. Let’s big up this son of the soil because that is a great achievement. Cheers!
Guy you are talking a whole pile of nonsense you you see; there are many JD; (jurisprudence) in America who are never invited to represent a case in the Supreme Court of the United States.
That is not the criterion to allow a lawyer to represent his/her client in that court! You all keep talking this nonsense about practice in Supreme court, which as far as I know is simply an appeal court!
When a case is appealed to the Federal Supreme Court of the United States, there is no guarantee it will be accepted, so what’s the big deal? Donald Trump less than a month ago appeal to that court; his case was rejected!
Just because this guy was born in Dominica you are making a big deal about it, he goes home and is like any other ordinary person in his neighborhood. the same as a Taxi driver, a trash truck driver, or a medical doctor for that matter! Nobody cares such does not make the news in America!
Folks the Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) Degree is unfortunately equivalent to the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Honors’ Degree.
Any person holding the JD Degree Qualification still must pursue the Legal Education Certificate (LEC) before they can be called to the Bar within CARICOM/ OECS
If you are called to the Bar in any State, Territory or District of the USA, you can practice within that particular State, Territory or District including the Supreme (High) Court of the Jurisdiction
Thank you Bailiff; now I see there is someone who understands the system, I will submit in detail what is jurisprudence law later!
Will you please tell Vince that and stop calling himself Doctor. He does not have a Ph.d. Seems everybody wants to call himself a Doctor in the Caribbean these days. Witch doctors mabe?
Are you for real?
As a lawyer/ litigator you can usually practice in any court
Come on now
NO.. you cannot! quite dumb.
Are you of sound mind? He has been practicing for almost 13 yrs.
He who knows not what he knows not is a fool shawn him.
Leave DNO alone. Try to read and edit your post before pressing the submit button.
You are absolutely correct in everything you have stated when one practices law in the US. However, you are wasting your time trying to educate a bunch of blockheads as they are unable to comprehend the facts. Dominicans loves story and the more the story is false the more they believe every word of it. Just saying.
Congrats cuz Manta should be alive to see and hear about her grand son.
Its always so wonderful when my countrymen do well! Congratulations!
