CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, from Dominica, has been re-appointed to a second term of office.

CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister of Belize, Mr. Dean Barrow, made the announcement during the Closing Press Conference of the CARICOM Heads of Government Inter-sessional Meeting in Belize, Wednesday.

The Secretary-General’s initial five-year appointment ends in August, and Heads of Government decided to deal with the matter of his reappointment now because they felt the next meeting in July was too close to the August expiration date, the Chairman told the media.

“I’m pleased to say that there was unanimous agreement for the SG’s reappointment,” Prime Minister Barrow disclosed.

“I want to make clear that on a personal note, I am as convinced as anyone else, and perhaps more so, that the Secretary-General has done an exemplary job. His commitment to reform, the changes he has already made along the lines of obliging the Secretariat and the Community to become more productive, more efficacious, are well known, and he has done all this while remaining throughout, extremely even tempered and accessible. I am pleased to say what a tremendous job of work this Secretary-General has done,” the Prime Minister said.

LaRocque is the seventh Secretary-General of CARICOM.

What are we really getting out of Caricom? As far as I know thus far it has only cost us money and creates a monopoly for regional companies exporting their wares to us duty free.
Seriously, what material or monetary benefit has Dominica derived from this cosy cartel?
We should really look at the figures and leave emotion out of it.
PS. Maybe there were no other takers for Irwin’s hot seat? I would not blame them because it is a thankless task and after all those years of talking our goals remain all but lofty.

Congratulations Irwin. You must have done an exemplary job to deserve a unanimous second term. May you get some more terms as long as health and strength permits.
Your immediate family are proud of you. I have not seen your siblings for a while since we all reside in different countries other than Dominica.
I am one of your cousins who have been speaking about you to your other cousins, ever since your first appointment. :) I also inform other Dominicans about you. We are all happy for you and for your success and wish you well.
God bless you! Hope to see you sometime.
