Dominican earns PHD in Marine and Coastal System Science

From an early age Camille David developed an interest in the effects of the rise of sea levels.

Growing up in Vieille Case and in close proximity to the coast he was able to have first hand observation of the influence of the ocean.

That interest led him to study the matter further and he has now received a PHD in Marine Sciences/Coastal System Science at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST).

This after the presentation of his dissertation, “Linkage between sea level rise, tidal inlet dynamics and wetland response.”

In an interview with the school’s website David said he developed an interest on the effects of the rise of sea levels because he grew up in close proximity to the coast and ‘ocean influence.’

“I developed a keen interest in coastal/marine science from my early days in high school,” he said. “This interest was heightened with an understanding of sea level rise and its destabilizing effects on coastal processes and ecology as well as on the built environment, and on the need to develop strategies to mitigate effects.”

He stated that studying and doing research at SMAST helped him develop the confidence to work with real-world challenges.

“Working on my research has enabled me to grow and develop the confidence to tackle real-world challenges with a skill set built from both practical experience and theory,” David pointed out. “There was tremendous opportunity to present my work at the seminar level and at conferences.”

He stated his future plans include building the skills he has already acquired and “seeking either post-doctoral opportunities or employment opportunities where I can use my knowledge to solve real-world problems.”

He described SMAST as a great learning institution.

“You build a network of friends here in quick time. I also think there is good camaraderie between faculty and students, which enhances learning,” David said.

Cograts on your achievement’s, the government should use the resources that the Dominican diasporas provide , we the diasporas have many skills we can give back to our country, the so call baby boomers are retiring and are coming back home, we or most of us will be working for free just to give back to our community .
There should be a registry where we can sign up for volunteer service in our specific skills..

Great comment ! This compliments an earlier posting of mine. This is so encouraging that Dominica’s Sons and Daughters are well educated and equipped with skills. More importantly, they want to give back – even volunteering.

DOMINICA, TAKE NOTE. DO Like India and encourage and utilize your human resource base wherever they may be.

Excuse me,Excuse me…. :-P bondieu hoye I haven’t yet congratulated my people and all you start with negativity. Congrats tan Cam! DR DAVID  If he had done something negative you all would be harassing DNO to post more and more and salivating over his carcass( like you all did with the woman from the Tourism office) but he has distinguished himself in a non-traditional field and given hope to young people restless in career goals, instead of the mundane and some of you vex. Bat coh zoh toujours! DNO thank you for highlighting those who have no qualms about the publicity! I am particularly over joyed when a Dominican male excels to remind us that all aren’t engage in negativity.

Its true. People get jealous when others in the positive spotlight. If he had done some thing bad then they would be asking DO for his pictures and his details. We should be happy and celebrate the achievements of others.
Thank you DNO for posting these things so Our younder generation can see that there is still hope.
They we can still make it through hard work and determination.

      Lets keep the positive Vibes

Dr. David! Itassi! Here are a few pointers and things to remember as you plan for your future:

    1. David in the Bible destroyed the Philistines and king Goliath.
2.Although Goliath thought he was tall, big, powerful and had money David on the other hand though seen by many as the underdog, was able to destroy Goliath and set Israel free.
    3. A young man from Itassi whom we all thought was going to make us proud did directly the opposite and brought shame. But we all know Dr. David will restore our image
    4. We know you earned your PHD unlike another young man from Itassi that told us he had degree and it turned out that it was just a “Greede” pronounced the same as greedy.
    5. Itassi and neighbouring villages are ripe and waiting on you for harvest. No doubt DAVID WILL KILL GOLIATH! So congratulations to you Dr. David.

CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER TO YOU SIR !

I think DNO is doing one of the greatest services Locally and in Diaspora Affairs in highlighting the achievements of Dominicans Oversees. The Value is probably not fully appreciated by those who criticize this initiative.

These great Dominican minds are NOT looking for praise, or to boast or show off – They are simply announcing (and indirectly offering) their expertise to Dominica and the World. If we are smart we will tap their expertise through consultancies and projects rather than to sometimes, far less qualified high-priced consultants.

IN FACT if the MINISTRY of EDUCATION, Ministry responsible for DIASPORA AFFAIRS, the Ministry responsible for Employment, DAIC, Government on a whole, Opposition Parties, Private Sector etc. are astute enough and cognizant of the value of creating a Database of Dominican expertise then surely Dominica’s future can only be bright if harnessed well. For a small country, per capita, we may be one of the more qualified in the world but do we utilize and appreciate the expertise of Dominicans that is available for our country’s sustainable development and competitiveness on the global scene.

They (our Dominican experts oversees) do not all necessarily have to return to Dominica physically by virtue of the type of sector they work in but their expertise can return through advise, consultancies, projects, opportunity for entrepreneurship. INDEED THEY CAN LIVE IN ONE GEOGRAPHICAL SPACE AND WORK OR USE THEIR EXPERTISE ELSEWHERE. Who best to use as consultants on Marine studies and climate change (our very own – of course, it goes without saying, under the terms and conditions of strict project or consultancy guidelines in order to bring out the best in them for the ultimate good of the country).

Nous avons le talent, mais nous ignorons et de gaspiller ce talent (we have the talent but we are ignoring and wasting this talent)

I hope the Ministries and agencies I mention take a real close look at this. They should probably seek out all such postings on DNO since DNO started its operations and continue from there in partnership with DNO.

Again Congratulations to you Dr. Camille David

THANKS DNO FOR SUCH GREAT SERVICE –

and for posting this Epistle

Great job David. By the way is the first Camille or David?

Never mind, I just checked the net and it says, although rare, Camille is sometimes ascribed to boys. Go figure.

Nevertheless, it’s interesting that your name and field of study is linked to Hurricane Camille, one of the most destructive Category 5 Atlantic hurricanes.

Welcome to the Academy and my best wishes on becoming a productive scholar.

DNO you said Camille David grew up in “Vieux Case”? Is this a village in St. Lucia or the home village of Roosvelt Skerrit? If the latter, then it is spelt Vieille- Case. If he is indeed from Vieille- case (Itassi), I hope we the people get to hear more about him and his aspirations later this year. Congrats to you Camille and I am quite sure you will make us very proud when all is said and done, Itassi is excited!
