Dominican nursing administrator, Gorda Peters-Joseph, was recently honored by the Jacobi Medical Center in New York for almost three decades of  dedicated work in pediatric and nursing care.

According to to the citation she was being honored “for 29 years of expert and caring pediatric nursing service and for superb nursing leadership shaped by inclusive and effective teamwork. Gorda’s loving hands on approach to her young patients, their families and her staff has improved and brightened the lives of thousands of children, while illuminating a path of excellence for all who serve with her”.

Gorda, known as Geda, was born in Marigot and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Peters to whom she gives credit for her success.

As a young child her parents always made education the primary focus, and she remembers her dad’s instructions the day they left for the US, “remember you all are going to America for education.”

Geda is thankful to her parents, family, teachers and friends who have supported her through the years.

She began her education at the Marigot Old Zion Primary school and then the Convent High School, where she was well known for netball and track and field.

Shortly after graduation migrated to the United States.

She continued her education in New York and graduated from Bronx Community College with an Associate Degree in Nursing.

She went on to Pace University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She received her Masters of Science/Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from Lehman College.

Geda is currently the Assistant Director of Pediatrics at Jacobi Medical Center, where she is responsible for the Pediatric Emergency Department, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Ambulatory Care Unit and the Pediatric In-Patient Unit.

She said she is proud of her accomplishments and hopes to continue her educational journey as much as she can.

Her success, she claims, is an example of hard work and determination.

There’s always a spoiler in the midst. Where in the hell does Linton come in. Dominicans can do well wherever they are. You do not have to migrate to America to do well. In America they will work under all kinds of conditions but in Dominica they will treat you like shit.

Not taking anything away from Ms Peters, there are lots of Dominicans at home and overseas who have great accomplishments but they don’t go about tooting their horns. Ms Peters has worked hard for her accomplishments and she deserves the accollades. So don’t start making it a political topic.

Geda, Congratulations on a job well done. I myself have put in all my three decades in Pediatric and NICU nursing. It is very rewarding to take care of the “little people,” and I have never regretted making that choice. Success and achievement definitely comes with hard work and determiniation.
I wish I could put in some years with the”little people” at PMH, one never knows what’s in store. I wish you continued success and I am really proud of you, my fellow school mate at CHS, and St. Ann’s house member. God bless you.

Dominicans always do better in America than Dominica, because their Govt too oppressive and stifle there creativity, i hope this changes with Linton.
