Tarique Azille, a 24-year-old of Roseau has showcased his acting skills in a 2012 London based film entitled ‘Offender’ while on a temporary stay in the United Kingdom (UK).

Azille said the movie portrays life behind bars in the UK in a very direct and uncensored manner and shows “young men taking the laws into their hands”.

When asked his opinion of the message the film attempted to bring out, Azille said that the aim was to avoid actions where the outcome leads to imprisonment.

“When you look at the dangers of the movie and the brutality and violence, then you feel like ‘I do not want to go to prison and experience that.’ It doesn’t call for people to be in prison but actually pushes them away.” he said.

He spoke of the challenges and victorious moments he faced during the production process of the film. He stated that the “possibility of making mistakes had me on edge” and the fear that the “facial expressions I had to master would not suit the requirements of the movie.”

He went on to say that he triumphed over these anxious feelings by setting his mind on the benefits the film in terms of bringing together his family to support him.

In the film, Azille played the role of an inmate at a prison, who had to intimidate a visiting family and instill fear within them similar to what a bully would do. Azille’s scene appears near the end of the movie which, in Azille’s description “gives them the impression that there is a part two to the movie.”

Azille mentioned the local support that he receives from Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) to help him gain the exposure that he requires. He also said that the DDA has introduced him to training and is in the process of enhancing the film aspect of their company, and in the event of recruiting actors, Azille will be contacted.

He also told DNO that he was discovered when he accompanied his friend to the production site of the film and was asked by one of the members of the directing team whether or not he was Dominican. Azille said that he confirmed the nationality and was then accepted for fulfilling the role as he has the “Dominican character that matches the scene.”

Azille hopes to gain further exposure both for himself and Dominica by extension as he seeks a manager to help him develop his acting skills. He said he has gained acting experience through plays at the Arawak House of Culture and at various levels of his schooling.

He urges every Dominican to “Accomplish their dreams which they thought could not have been accomplished.”

Azille currently resides in Dominica where he invests time into the production of music and works alongside a photographer.

Be encouraging or leave your negative opinion to yourself, is either you help grow or ignore. You people need to stop spread hate because your not in the spotlight but give credit to the person that was given the chance to represent our absence….One love to all patriotic Dominica’s

Why do black people take these terrible roles in film? why do they want to perpetuate their race as bad and destructive? sometimes that is the only film or the first film some white people will see of a black person and that would be such a negative portrayal of the race.

We need to be more conscious of what roles we take in film, especially when the films are for release to mainly non-black folks. Let us work hard to showcase the good about our race.

This is odd. I am a film buff but this film by Ron Scalpello does not have anyone by the name Tarique Azille on its cast list. Did he use a pseudonym (i.e. stage name) perhaps? A further clarification would be helpful.
