Dominican and director of the Pan American Health Organization, Dr. Carissa Etienne is among a number of distinguished women who will be honored at the 18th annual staging of the prestigious Women of Great Esteem Emerald Awards to be held on May 3 in New York.

Dr. Etienne will be honored for outstanding work in the field of medicine “as it relates to global research and policy around primary health care.”

Emerald Awards are presented to women who develop and advance their communities without regard for race, ethnicity, religiosity, gender, age or national origin.

The Women of Great Esteem Emerald Award was founded in 1995 to recognize the increasing contribution of women who have excelled beyond normal expectations in a multi-cultural society.

Over 150 women from 27 countries around the world have already received the award.

Dominicans Jean Joseph and former MP for Castle Bruce Loreen Bannis-Roberts are among past awardees.

Dr. Etienne previously served as PAHO’s Assistant Director in 2003-2008, in charge of its core technical cooperation programs in Health Systems and Services, Technology and Health Services Delivery, Health Surveillance and Disease Management, Family and Community Health, and Sustainable Development and Environmental Health.

In Dominica, she served as Coordinator of the National AIDS Program, Disaster Coordinator for the Ministry of Health, Chair of the National Advisory Council for HIV/AIDS, and Director of Primary Health Care Services, among other posts.

She holds degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of the West Indies as well as a master’s in community health in developing countries from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Lorraine Bannius Roberts an awardee of “Women of Great Esteem Emrald Award”. What has Lorraine Bannis Roberts done or did in the past to have been even considered to receive this award before Dr. Etienne? The credibility of that award has to be questioned.
