UPDATE: Dr. Phillip St. Jean has passed

The medical community in Dominica is now mourning the death of one of their own, Dr. Phillip St. Jean.

DNO understands that Dr. St. Jean passed away last night.

The cause of death is unknown.

Dr. St. Jean was involved in the primary health care sector in Dominica and served as District Medical Officer for the Roseau Health District.

He was instrumental in implementing the Miracle Eye Mission, a program sponsored by the Governments of Venezuela and Dominica, which provides eye care for the less fortunate.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Dr. Kenneth Darroux said he is saddened by the passing of Dr. St. Jean since has known him for a number of years.

He said Dr. St. Jean was a person who was quiet, honest and unassuming. He said he was a very bright and competent physician.

“I think this needs to be underscored,” he stated.

Dr. Darroux also said a point to be underscored is that no one knows the hour when life on earth ends.

“I have been informed that he went through the day routinely, he did his full clinic, clear his quota of patients at the Roseau Health Center only to be taken to the Accident and Emergency Department later that evening and succumbing,” he stated.

He extended condolences to the family and friends of Dr. St. Jean

“So I would really like to reach out to the family and friends to let them know that we at the Ministry of Health and myself as the minister that whatever way we can, we are able to assist them to help them cope with their grief and to make this very difficult time for them a bit more bearable,” Dr. Darroux stated. “Please do not hesitate to reach out to us.”

Toto, you don’t need to have any patience with me and for sure neither am I asking you to,because yours truly is not the issue.I just want you to put this one in your pipe, and smoke it.
    You are going to die.

Of course I will die JJ, as will you, Skerrit and even the Pope. I don’t worry about that because that was my destiny ever since I was born. To die is part of life but I will leave smoking the pipe to Crapaud if you don’t mind.

I think I saw the Dr.while visiting November last year, and if I knew he would not live to see the end of March,I would have asked him.Doc are you saved? do you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?.may be his answer would be something like this “Thank God my brother, praise His name I am looking forward to be in heaven because I trusted Him 5 or 20 years ago” and I would answer,God bless you my brother.Or his answer might be “thank you for asking, but no one knows, when I die I will know”.
I am speaking to the fans of DNO There are two places available to us before death heaven or hello but after death you can only be in one.Are you ready to breathe your last breath here on earth?
….Remember it will be too late.

      Why are Dominicans so anti-God?
Every time someone alludes to God our people take umbrage. It makes one wonder….

      • Toto
        March 9, 2018

They are not anti-God but have no patience for religious cranks like JJ Charles that give God a bad name.

Judge not that ye be not judged. It is not up to you to decide who is saved. Asking him the question makes no difference. Stop judging who is saved or not.

    March 9, 2018

If you were Tony you would still be alive because Skerrit would fly you to Florida hospital long time to get proper treatment. If you were one of the ministers you would be alive because Skerrit would have flown you to Barbados or french West Indies for treatment. If you were Melissa, you would like d be alive because in the first place she is supposed to be first lady but resides in the US with her children that were born in the US, while in office. Unfortunately we have tolerated a government that closes hospitals and runs out our good Dominican doctors in the Diaspora that want to help us. My condolences to his family, but how much more can we take? Skerrit killing us man! The man does not care one bit about us

      March 9, 2018

U are one dumb Massacre resident we need to relocate U silly. Doctors are human aren’t theThis is not a political phenomenon by any stretch. I take liberty in stating the aforementioned. As much as I think extremely poorly of Medard & his band of opportunists. A doctor’s passing has no co-relation in the bleakness of DA.The bleakness lies in the opportunism of our nationals. The 3 faced P.S’s yesterday today & perhaps tomorrow. The interlectuals real Psuedo or imagined who spend hours, nightly discussing over scotch, cast rum or marijuana( their anesthesia of choice ) The painful part massacre is :they are aware they can turn things around. They prefer to drink, smoke or who knows suck it away. recall Pipip/Austrie told us who don’t have teeth sucking it? Madame Scotland told us about sussay sel? Hope you get the drift Massacre. So strive fwd & stop being a fool. control th impulse to just lash out. You may well end up like ur leader, U know who. Forward not backwards.

This is difficult news to receive today. A pleasant and wonderful gentleman, whose positive and vivacious spirit was infectious. I extend heartfelt condolences to his family. It must be a very dark day for them. As I reflect on the SMA days, I cannot help, but feel a touch of nostalgia; in the present circumstances, deep sadness. To be sure, the Dominica Community, not just the medical community, has suffered a tragic lost.

May his soul repose in tranquility.

So sorry to hear this. My sympathies to his family. May his soul rest in eternal peace. He was a wonderful and patient teacher at SMA. I fondly remember him refereeing inter-house basketball games on the SMA court. He would be very animated with his exaggerated gestures when he blew a call. We enjoyed his refereeing antics even more than the game itself. Go in peace, Gentle Soul. You will be forever missed.

Adios and rest in perfect peace SMARITAN. This is a sad day for us Smaritans who knew you well.

I remember your song after David while attending the GREAT SMA…to quote my favorite part; “Hurricane David came and destroyed our land, countries were interested so they lent a helping hand. They provided clothes and food as you know, we were so unkind we called them bro-go-doewe”. Hence the BRO-GO-DOEWE still resonates today.

Deepest sympathies to family, friends and acquaintances. Long live your memory sir and see you some day on the other side.

We are all on a temporary sojourn on this earth. Our main purpose in life is to help each other, if and when we can. Dr. St. Jean surely committed himself to helping his fellow countrymen and women. He has left us a legacy of selflessness , patriotism and altruism. The man was a gentle giant.

    • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
      March 8, 2018

Why is his death unbelievable to you? People die everyday, the Bible teaches that it is appointed unto man once to die, and after that is the judgment.

It also taught us: to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord; you had better hope when he was alive he recognized, and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, cause anyone of us who fail to do that will be lost, and believe it or not it could mean going into the lake of fire “hell.”

I do not know him, and so I simply wish to convey to you: “make you soul and spirit right will God, so that when you die you can go to Jesus; remember always “to be absent from the body is to be with the Lord.”   When we die we simply move from one life to another. Our spirit and soul came from God, and cannot die unless God destroy it, and that depends on how we live our life on earth!

    March 8, 2018

Dr. St. Jean had the qualities of what people expect in a Doctor. He was a people’s person, he would listen to his patients and find time to talk to them, particularly the elderly. He cared very much for his patients – he will surely be missed. Such a wonderful Doctor I hope his peers learnt from him. Rest in peace good Doctor.

It is often said that ‘who the God loves die young’ and I can tell you he was a good and helpful servant. I remember when I went to PMH and could barely walk due to a torn ligament, he was the first one to rush in and get me a wheelchair and ensure that I was well taken care of. Such a wonderful soul. My brother, may you soul rest of peace and may the God of mercy welcome you into his loving arm. Enjoy heavenly peace…

Everybody dying. my condolences. What is our death rate these days can anyone inform?

    • Malatete
      March 8, 2018

This is a very interesting question. The most reliable data I have to find date back to 2002 when the expected life expectancy rate in our country was 76.7 yrs (74.5 for men and 78.8 for women). My information is that our government does submit the relevant information either not at all or not on time to bodies like the WHO, notwithstanding the fact that do have a statistical office. In the absence of information to the contrary I must assume that this is correct.
