What an experience – Leslassa Armour-Shillingford

Miss Dominica at Miss World finals
Miss Dominica at Miss World finals

Miss World 2013 is over and she didn’t win but Leslassa Armour-Shillingford is proud to have been Dominica’s representative at the pageant.

“What an experience!” she wrote on her Facebook page immediately after the show. “I am so humbled and proud to have represented my beautiful Nature Island, DOMINICA at Miss World 2013. I will cherish these memories all my life.. More to Come!”

Some 130 beauties from around the world participated in the glittering pageant in Indonesia.

The Miss World 2013 crown went to Miss Philippines, with Miss France being the first runner up and Miss Ghana second runner up.

Armour-Shillingford was a finalist in the talent competition. Her gown for the finals was designed by Carla Armour.

sakway toneh; she did not put Dominica on the map. That is not what ‘putting on map means’. Leslassa’s clips for the night of the miss world pagaent was no more than a minute long. How do we get on ‘the map’ with that. How in god’s name is anyone not from Dominica going to remember her. If she had won then again all you could say that and even then it would be hard work for anyone to take notice. Lastly how many people watch miss world these days and from where? get your heads out of your a&%@es. She didn’t even place so basically she didn’t do well understand? I mean good for her for putting her best foot forward but sadly she was well below average.

Alas – grieve somewhere else my friend. We are proud of Leslassa. Without her presence, the island of Dominica would not even have been mentioned in the Miss World Pageant. Right now I am sure, because of her participation, hundreds of thousands of people now know that there is an island named Dominica and that is bound to have an effect.

Thanks Lassa. Many of us recognize the great publicity and public relations mileage that was achieved through your hard work. Best wishes for your future. Continue to promote yourself and to promote your country.

PAst queens could not have reach that far becuz after the show they sit on their blessed assurance waiting for PM, Tourism, Angencies, Sponsors to knock at their doors. Some of them spoil their reputation the nite of the queen show. Team leslassa ws determined from the start, they sold themselves well, they represented, they worked HARD! No other queen in has worked that hard to get out there and thats what makes Ms Lassa different. People like Lassa see the world differently, they dont see it as anybody owe them anything, they see life as a challenge that they have to overcome by fighting tooth and nail. Congrats Team leslassa Armour-Shillingford. But I must take a big laugh eh at TONY for saying the child married some rich man hahahahahah!

Well now that Dominica is on the map what’s next? Is the country going to come together and increase the economy by building an international airport instead of having people fly in through other islands. It comes with + and – but this is a step im waiting to see. :?:
Once you put yourselves out there as a people I hope we live up to a standard….I just hope we have another representative next time around. You can’t always make the top 10 but to be qualified for this was progress in itself. Congrats Ms. Shillingford :-P

“Her gown for the finals was designed by Carla Armour.” Really? I was rooting for Lassa and watched the entire show; however, with all due respect to Carla, I don’t think she should have gotten involved in designing for a pageant at that level. She should leave her designing for local pageants. She might have killed whatever chance Lassa had at making it to the top 20 or even the top 10.

30 some years ago Margaret Cools Lartigue, this year Ms Armour-Shillingford.

I guess we will have to wait until some other family with a decent name pops up to rally behind someone.

I mean, are we saying in 35 years only two women have the qualities that can end up in representation at that level ?

Dominica tourism tried to push other people ? I dont think so.

Dark skin and rural women in Dominica have it really stacked against them.

    Congrats to Ms Armour.

Absolute rubbish! Diligence, tenacious hard work goes a long way too.

Yes money helps just like in every aspect of life, as that enables one to be able to make a smoother transition towards their venture.

Nevertheless I still say, forget the name, money, etc, we all bestowed with talents and once we figure out how to maximise those, ‘the skies the limit.’

So many of the previous [Miss Dominica title holders]just seem to sit back and wait for things to be done for themselves like pushing an aggressive marketing approach to participate in international pageants or even get those in positions to sit back and take notice, but instead appeared to lack the drive, tenacity and conscientiousness that’s been displayed by Leslassa.

Let this be an example for all future young women who aspire for such titles, and we cannot forget our young men as well, “never, ever give up and persistence and tenacity will see you through.” in the end.

By the way some of the former [Miss Dominicas] who were just as capable as Leslassa to participate and represent superbly well, were just a little to lack luster and complacent to just agree with the “NOs” they may have received in their quest.

Best wishes my dear Leslassa and there’s still time to represent at the “Miss Universe Pageant” in December. :-D  :)

Im surprised at Valda. Some years ago there were only dark skinned queen contestants in our queen show and the public was upset asking where the light skin girls, right here on DNO. Its our slavery mentality that have us like that, sitting back and waiting for massa. Lassa did not sit back Valda, she stood up and fought. She did not team up with nobody husband to get there she went through the right channels. Lassa keep your head up and your rep in tact! Haters will continue to hate.

I can believe what i am reading, Now is a time to rejoice with this young lady. She is safe, she could have been coming home in a casket, and you airing you mouth on personal matter we out there don’t care to know about. She is a woman, she is beautiful. she will reach to the top of the ladder, with or without her husband.Jealous people sit and watch a next person move forward. I bet none of your families can’t move to a next village to compete to any competition. low class no body. you are so salt. you are still water.

I am happy that one or two people here actually can see things for what they really are and not what they want to see. Jesus Christ don’t make me have to keep coming on here wasting energy typing because it seems the majority commenting on here are thick and have so sense of rational thinking.

What nonsense this person talking about ‘before persons didn’t know about Dominica and now because of you we are on the map’. Ridiculous, ridiculous and 100 times more. Putting a country on the map is more than a 10 second appearance on a world stage. Furthermore the little that might have seen our name will not remember because they have no vested interest in it. She would have had to win to give Dominica a slight chance of being on the map. Helloooooo!! Winning would mean endorsements, interviews, countless television appearances around the world and after repeating our name to a global audience over and over again through her countless commitments only then people would begin to take notice. The only comment Leslassa should get which I have no problem with is good job, you did your best and for that we are proud. This is worth the work she has done. But you all are carrying on like she placed in top 10, or even top 20 for that matter. She was on our screen for less than a minute.

And yes I will stick to what I said previously.
Any other miss Dominica could have gone to miss world, seeing that she didn’t place. I consider this constructive criticism so we don’t repeat Lassa’s performance if we ever get a chance again. She didn’t take it seriously. Come on. One plait the whole time!! to the middle yes but not pulled back. Made her look short and only forehead you could see. We couldn’t see any hair. Also she needed more makeup and more personality. It was nothing to do with being black. Look at miss Ghana in the video before the Q&A. That had impact. Leslassa had done. You cannot compare the 2. She is just too plain.

If you want to go to Miss world you have to do more than that. Also she never wore any nice clothes, her dress for introduction, neither on final night was not up to scratch. Sorry this is the harsh reality. Its not intended to be mean but just to stop people from talking rubbish and learn for next time.

Keep your weave, centipede lashes and the rest of yoru fake stuff to yoruself. Hello and good afternoon my people. Hello it’s good that she went to the Miss world padgeant but she didn’t even place. In this type of event winning is the only thing that matter so please don’t get carried away. Anyway I hope she will go back to the Shillingford that marry her and I hoped they have a job in their family business for her. I also hope the Government don’t give her a Government job where the tax payers have to support her because she married a man that have money and family name recognition. I know I will get many thumbs down but we can’t be blind to how things work in our country.

No they can’t! Yet another example of Domincans running their big mouths 20 to the dozen, and damaging other people’s reputation in their toxic endeavour and intent. Freedom to use the internet doesn’t give us the opportunity to post “untruths” about others, to make our [little selves] feel better.

Your level of ignorance is unbelievable! Why would you make such a comment about something you obviously have no clue about. First of all the young lady would not have been able to participate in Miss World or Miss Dominica if she was married. Hear the name again, “MISS” not “MRS.”

Secondly, she may not have placed but she certainly reached far. Do you even understand what it means for Dominica to be represented in such a competition after 35 years?

Hold your negative comments for your ignorant self. She will come back to the Shillingford and the Armour that gave birth to her and I am sure are very proud of her.

omg; there are no negative comments because DNO did not print mine so I am trying a second time. How can a newspaper be bias? only in Dominica. Freedom of speech and expression means just that. Some might not like it or agree with it but that does not make in invalid.

I said I was embarrassed the way that you Dominicans are treating this young lady like a god. There is support but this is obsession. I said I had nothing personal against Leslassa but she did what any other contestant would have done which is basically got introduced with our island’s name on the screen. Why would DNo not print it. When we for somebody in this country eh. Again its a fact that she did not even make the top thirty so those calling for ambassadorial status must be on some sort of drug that distorts logical thinking. DNO for your information there are a lot of people that feel the way I do.

I all this special treatment from day one now she is literally a god. People even force Dominica source on fb to remove his post expressing his and other users opinion something I consider to be sheer bullying. Yes I applaud her efforts at miss world but lets stop going on about how great she did. You could have said that if she got maybe even 15th place. check the stats and see where Dominica placed overall.

Lastly the prime minister should spend whatever money we have into improving our hospitals so people do not need to fly overseas at the slightest health problem, upgrading public facilities like beaches and so many other things instead of paying marpin so people can watch miss world. what a joke

Nobody ever said she was a God but we who genuinely LOVE our country support whoever represents us in a positive light and she did just that. You stating that she was ‘just’ introduced with our country’s name at the bottom of the screen shows your lack of intelligence. It also tells me that you think like crabs at the bottom of a barrel. We are all one people, we all bleed the same… stop the hate.

I was happy to see Dominica being represented in the Miss World Pageant. I found Miss Shillingford to be very confident and never stop smiling like a true Dominican. However, I am not surprised at the outcome, as I had predicted in my comments of couple days ago that she would not place. At the time, my comments were centered around the interference of Skeritt, to me it’s like a kind of bad luck. He doesn’t appear to be able to do anything right these days.

That’s sheer ignorance doc love! When you all are through making Skerrit out to be more than just a negro from VC who happens to be PM blame labourites for making him a God! What foolishness is that?

Your adverse words had absolutely nothing to do with it. One out of thousands, you were on the wrong side.
You are not God. Therefore cease making out yourself to be one. Blasphemer! As if you are capable of predicting anything.

According to their records, you did not win but to us Dominicans you won. You certainly look beautiful and elegant in your gown.
130 beauties? This was really stiff competition. There is no doubt you put forth your best. No doubt the judges had a difficult time in deciding on the finalists.
All who supported you do agree that you made Dominicans proud of you and your representation of Dominica on the world scene. I visualize what an exposure and experience it was for you. You are Dominica’s Queen.
I am pleased and relieved that there were no interruptions of Miss World Pageant and that you are safe and sound. Thank God that all went well.

I spent 9 months promoting Dominica and the people I promote to ask “where is Dominica? isnt that the Dom. Rep? your a liar theres no island Dominica!” And the ones who actually come send me email on the bad and ugly experiences… we need to grow up and remove the hard lahboo we have on our eyes! I work in the Travel industry so I know what im talking about.

One would think since you are in the travel industry, you have the opportunity to educate them about Dominica. Your ignorance is showing and so is theirs.
God has placed you in this position, make the most of it and cease your defamation of Dominica. Thank God that you are able to correct them about Dominica and where it is situated.
People have asked me if I am from Dominica Rep. or if Dominica is the Dom. Rep., I correct them. I do not get angry with them and I am not in the travel industry.
I did not expect such a comment from one as you who claimed to be in the travel industry. You should know better. You sound like a bitter person. Clean up your ungodly and unpatriotic act and against your country. In any case, your comment is out of place.

seems like I am the only one with a brain on the island. Truth has to be said. Have you got no ambition? All this money spent propelling Leslassa to get her rich. Where is your profit in that. There is support and there is obsession.

Our behaviour was ja dropping. I know I won’t be popular with my comment but at least I had the guts to speak it how I see it. I have nothing against Lesslassa personally but Dominicans are obsessed with beauty pagaents and they carry out like the person is running for presidential candidate. At least facebook can go back to normal.

What did Leslassa do that any other queen couldn’t do. She didn’t even make the top 30. I mean come on. If she was that good the rest of the world would see it. Anyone could have put Dominica name on the screen because naturally all contestants get introduced in the beginning. Even the prime minister went releasing statement and even paid marpin to stream the show. for a vieux ole pageant which most civilised countries are pulling out off because it is classed as sexist. All this wasted money on one person! Notice all her compliments came from Dominicans. She was never complimented on the official miss world page and was never a favourite. Stop this madness

    • September 29, 2013

      Voice of reason.

Hello you not the only one with a brain and am sure your brain is working well. Our people have problem with the truth and they have blinders on which lead to tunnel vision. So many times I shake my head and wonder if its a curse that’s on our people because of how they think.

@darrs – Why do you all like to associate God Almighty with things he has no involvement in?

It is so ridiculous when you hear people in things such as carnival queen show etc thanking God for helping them to win…..

That is such a massive paradox. How can God be the one who helps people emerge as the best in the sinful vulgar activities of carnival?

So if a man goes to thief and he steals bountifully, should he thank God for helping him to thief successfully without getting caught?
