On Friday March, 20 at approximately 4: 05 pm the rescue staff of the Fire Department conducted an operation and rescued three European visitors at the Titou Gorge.

The tourists, who were visiting the area, were trapped by sudden rising waters due to heavy rains.

They were rescued from an area estimated to be about 150 feet deep with ropes and other equipment.

They all escaped with no substantial injuries but were subsequently taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital for medical attention.

The Fire Department thanks to the villagers of Laudat for their valuable assistance throughout the operation.

We would like to take this opportunity to encourage persons to continue monitoring the weather when visiting these sites as the occurrence of flash flood is possible and to ensure that it is safe to access those areas.

    That spot again….
I’ve been there and I know it’s deadly…very subtle waters even without any flash flood…
I would think that by now the village council or whomever is responsible for getting it done would have placed a sign there warning folks,( take a deep at their own risk ) especially without someone that knows the area very well. So many people have lost their lives in that very spot dating so far back. The Laudat village council should by now have had more stringent rules for folks wanting to take a deep. They could make floating devices a must for anyone wanting to get in there…
It dose not take much, just a little common sense…

Special thanks to the fire officers for rescuing them. Obviously, the visitors are grateful to you.
Titou Gorge is beautiful to look at but is dangerous. I would not dare go too close to it. Visitors are adventurous. Thank God the fire officers rescued them.
The majority of them, in the picture of course, are all young. Some day a few of you will assume a higher position. Good luck to you officers.

This place looks creepy and eerie. One can just feel the tranquilizing must take another life. Derp’s suggestion should be taken very seriously less another life is lost in that place. Safety mechanisms should be employed as soon as possible to avoid another tragedy.

Congrats to the fire authorities – both men and women of the department for a job well done. I hope you will continue to prepare for another incident which will visit us again, unless safety mechanisms are in place to minimize the possibility of the other accident.

Is there any warning signs in this area. ?? If not perhaps it just might be an idea to put one up. Also the tour guides who take visitor’s to these areas should perhaps warn them of just how dangerous it can be.

Because it’s one of the main tourists attraction there should be an opening time and a closing time with a trained lifeguard on duty within that time.Have first aid and so forth.A fee can also be charged to help with lifeguard services. If people know that there is this added safety there might be a better chance to increase revenue in that area, because of more visitors. That means more employment.I never understood why the gov’t has not set up a body to explore ways to generate revenue from our vast natural resources. We are blessed with natural greenery.Natural sulphure.Where is the vision?

Thanks for appearing so calm this time around Jayson. When I saw your name on the post, I really thought, based on your Bubbles post, that you were going to say they should have let them drown because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jayson, Jayson, Jayson………….

Great job by our disciplined forces, as always their professionalism always come to all in times of distress and life threatening situations. Hats off to the villagers and the Ladaut community, as we all know Ladaut is a loving community and its people always at the ready to assist. having said that, can some one tell me if there are appropiate warning signs and emergancy call numbers in the event of such incidences? I will hold off for confirmation on this question and other basic matters of safety. Keep up the great job man and woman of our disciplined forces. You earn you 5% and more.

Kudos to the Fire Officers and others who assisted even with limited resources. The Fire Service is still a very disciplined and dedicated service; a group on men and women on the island if not the only group still committed to service. A similar story of a rescue mission can be told that took place at Antrim involving a family in distress; that went unreported but the fire personnel were excellent in response and rescue. The Fire PR should do more documentaries of those missions; cause the public is still of the perception that is only fires these guys attend to and when there is no fires they just loaf around playing Dominoes and cooking broth but the reality is those guys train and hold lectures on various scenarios on a daily basis- proud of you guys keep it up.

You are correct. Even when there are accidents with no fire, they are there with their trucks and equipment, in the event those in the vehicles are trapped. They waste no time to arrive.
When window cleaners of those especially high rise buildings get trapped in between outside windows, the firemen are present. Of course, these instances, I am referring to are in Canada.
All in all the firemen really do a good job. Wherever we reside, we do need them. Their services are important.

Thumbs up to our fire dept. Our nature is challenging and we promote that so we must be prepared for incidents like these. I’m glad to see that we are. That is very positive news and gives confidence to our visitors. Thank you.

they should carve indents in the wall for people to hold onto, like make it look natural, don’t make it look artificial, so people can hold on if they get tired or a cramp

Derp, you know how slippery these rocks get when wet? Really they are like an ice skating rink and dangerous. Just don’t go down there when it is raining and I hope they will place a sign there with an appropriate warning, if they have not already done so.
