Former prisoner wants to reach out to the youth

Joseph wants to reach out to young people
Joseph wants to reach out to young people

A man, who spent close to 30 years in prison for murder, has said he wants to reach out to the youth so they won’t make the same mistake that he did and suffer the consequences.

Eric “Zeye” Joseph, who was sent to prison for the murder of Ted Honychurch, told DNO that reaching out to the young people has always been his dream.

“Right now I want to reach out to young people. I always wanted to do that, especially those who are students and are part of gangs,” he said.

Joseph has reasons to tell his life story to young people because, according to him, prison is not an easy place to be.

“Prison doesn’t have the kind of recreation right now like before,” he stated. “Prison is hard now, it’s tighter.”

Joseph was sentenced to hang in 1983 for the brutal murder of Honychurch, the father of famed historian, Lennox Honychurch.

The killing followed the abduction of the Giraudel farmer by a group of ‘Dreads’ headed by one of the country’s most wanted fugitives, Leroy ‘Pokosion’ Etienne.

It is reported that Joseph confessed to shooting Honychurch just days after he was kidnapped along with his wife, cook and gardener, all of whom were later released.

According to his testimony, Joseph shot Honychurch after he killed one of his kidnappers in a failed bid to escape. Honychurch’s body was later burnt.

Weeks after the killing, Joseph was found severely injured and close to death in the area around Boetica after allegedly falling into a precipice and being left by his fellow ‘Dreads’.

After a plea from the Rastafarian community, Joseph was freed from prison in 2009 but his life in prison has made life as a free man a nightmare, he said.

“I was happy and celebrated my release. I started enjoying myself in my own way and believe I would face good or get it better but is more pain, agony and tribulation,” he stated.

Joseph, who is homeless and lives a life of vagrancy, said it is difficult being on the streets.

“All now is on the streets I am, I am not working and can’t pay rent. I am not getting money from nowhere. All now I need a place to stay,” he said.

The former prisoner also claims he has been brutalized by the police and has been beaten in Newtown since his release.

But prison wasn’t all that bad for Joseph has learnt a skill.

“I am a tailor. I learnt to sew and make shoes while in prison. I did a tailor course in prison, but since I was released I never sewed a pant, neither a shirt because I don’t have tools to work. My problem is having a machine,” he noted. “I am unemployed and since I was released from prison I never worked anywhere.”

He noted that his present tribulations will not make him destroy himself.

“It will give me more strength and more faith to call on the father,” he said.

All these and more, Joseph wants to tell to young people so they could learn from his past.

“What I experience in life I wouldn’t want another person to experience it,” he said.

I remember the morning he was found i saw him, after that we were scared to walk outside at night and leave our doors open that same morning his fellow rastas stole someone’s truck and crashed it in the raven, sorry but he need to acknoweldge what he did and ask for forgiveness from the families, the contry and friends

There are many children whose parents abandon them and do not murder. For many years, the brethren called for the release of this man who had killed another innocent man and burned him, an evil crime indeed, because he was kidnapped and tried to escape. Some of you here, feel no compassion unless the victim is related to you. You would be singing another tune, if your father, brother or relative had been burned, perhaps alive, we will never know. While there were good rastas, I remember there was a lot of lawlessness going on with some of the rastas at that time. ZEYE WAS LEFT TO DIE BY THAT SAME RASTA BRETHREN and was saved BY ‘BALDHEADS’. He also escaped the hangman’s noose, i.e. the death penalty, so his life was spared twice. He had two chances to be remorseful and ask for forgiveness and start a new live of giving back to society. Apparently he did not take stock of his opportunities.
You talk about forgiving Zeye. We have heard absolutely no remorse from this man. Maybe it’s a guilty conscience for leaving him behind to die, which made his brethren ask for his release. Also perhaps the brethren may not want him to tell his story about what really happened in the bush 3 decades ago.

My goodness, there must have been a plan, for when he was released? You release a convicted man after 3 decades, then what? The Government gave the Rastas $30,000 a couple years ago. What happened to those funds? Why don’t you write a story about that? Who is accountable for the ‘Babylon’ funds, our tax money which was given to the group? A sewing machine could have easily been bought and Zeye could pay back, as he worked, but there are 3 sides to every story: his, theirs and the truth. Then again, to quote one of the Rasta lawyers: ‘you can bring a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink’. We know what that means. They are silent now… no one is talking.. except Henry, who wants government i.e our taxes, to support a freed murderer, after supporting him for 30 years… again.. The onus is on the Nayabingi to help Zeye.

Nobody is making Eric Joseph out to be a hero.

He is a man who had a bad start in life and a difficult childhood.

Consequently he made a grave mistake and many lesser mistakes.
Nobody can justify criminal behaviour. But he has served his time.
Some of you need to understand that there is life after prison. As an evangelist I can assure you that there is a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness of the sea.

The Bible tells us that we have all sinned and our sins have separated us from God. We cannot save ourselves. Salvation can not be earned! See Ephesians 2:8,9. Without God’s grace we would all be doomed. But there is hope.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting live. God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved.”
    (St. John 3:16,17)

The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

God sent His Son to be our Saviour! On the cross at Calvary Jesus Christ accepted the guilt of all our sins and suffered the punishment we should have borne. He paid the debt to set us free by shedding His blood and dying for us.

Those who believe Christ has shed His blood for their sins – and that His death on the cross put their sins away – and receive HIM as their personal Saviour are forgiven and have peace with God and a home in heaven. Please take your Bible and read 1 John 5:11,12.
    Now read Revelation 3:20.

At the heart’s door the Saviour is standing,
At the heart’s door fast closed by sin.
At the heart’s door the Saviour is waiting,
Oh, draw back the bolt and let Him in .

When we are saved God changes us on the inside. The Bible says
we become a “new creation”. Old things pass away. All things become new.” Read it for yourself in 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Eric Joseph, this is for you! Yes, you can go straight! And you can use your life now to help other young men and women avoid the mistakes you have made. You can help many others turn their lives around. But you need to have Jesus Christ in your corner.
You need HIM to go straight and be the greatest help possible to others.

Eric, God has a plan and a purpose for your life. Don’t miss it. Seize the opportunity to become a true servant of God.

I see comments treating this man like a hero and a saint comparing him to Moses an even St Paul. Is that the kind of man we want our children to follow like a pipe piper.
The man brutally murdered an innocent person for no reason. This look like an execution for gang initiation. How much sympathy would they have if someone murder their parents in cold blood. I have no sympathy for him like I have no sympathy for those who burnt the three outstanding young Dominicans on Carnival day in 1963. Those people have hearts of stone.

If the Rastafarian petitioned for his release from jail where are they to help the man. They left him in the cold what a shame. Eric you realize what you did was a gruesome act you do your time but suffering for the grief the Honeychurch family went through. Keep praying God will forgive he will send someone to rescue you.

It is good that you now want to share your life story with the youth. Bad that you are on the streets. but i have not seen in the short piece that you have written the remorse for your actions i think this is a large part in freeing you from the chains that bound you.

I was thinking the same. Joseph needs to acknowledge his wrong doing so he can be free.. I was a teenager then and I remember that very sad time in our history. Hope he gets some help so he can help him self in this society because after 30 years things have changed greatly.

The lessons are quite clear. We need serious rehabilitation programs.
Then we must find a way to prevent nationals especially the youths to resist the call to violence and hatred by opposition forces which will USE them and spit them out.
When violence and hatred are circulating they will victimize anyone even their proponents.
I heard Ted Honeychurch was a gentleman and a farmer with no particular political ideology. After his death many farmers abandon their holdings, farming has not got back to the level of that time.

U c d man come out prison surviving under hard knox man. U expect him to be just like u? And even for his forgiveness. Doesn’t the law expect better for him that we discredit him even after he could have died after 30 yrs in prison for your one sided bogus call on d man life. Don’t you believe that Christ has power over death. N even still. The same Honneychurch guy killed a man before he was killed. Even he was favored not being a dread. So what now. A life is not to be judged as the soul that sins will eventually die. The dread act have man under siege taking gun bullet in Zion just to live, u don’t expect them to rebel. Even though you taking for yourselves. So one man die to make peace after how much dread man die up in d spot. Who’s wrong. Everyman for his self and when it dunn everyman respect one another and stop kill man for dead act. Bogus criminals like MAMO and crew. They cant take Jah. Rastafari. Jah bless the dreads of today. Guide and protect them Jah. Lion….Hard work and perseverance will set u on the right path.

  9. August 28, 2014

This man has a story to tell. He could help us recreate the Dominica dread story.
Where are the literature minded people of Dominica? Why isn’t the government using this man whilst he i still alive to document and film the history of Dominica? The side of the story that many will never know and only a few “privileged” has had the opportunity to live and witness?

Why isn’t Dr. Honeychurch writing that history? Why isn’t the Dominica film association putting this man’s story or rather the story of the dreads in motion picture?

Are we waiting until someone else come take it and make millions of it?

Who are we to judge? God is the only one qualified to be our Judge because He is the only One Who knows all about us. Pray for the Honychurch family. Dominicans and others need to learn to forgive. Forgiveness is not for them but for yourself, so that you will be at peace.
    RASTA LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brother turn to your Father, and I can assure you, He will give you the strength and the resources to birth the dream He has placed in you. Remember, a man can do All things through Christ who strengthens him. I pray that your situation will improve. My hearts breaks reading of your current situation. Keep pushing, stay positive and keep hope alive. Let God be your guide.

And now abideth faith, hope and charity but the greatest of these is charity(love) Many of you all comments are so disgusting its not funny, There is no forgiveness or compassion there, Why do you all post so much negative comments where is the forgiveness in you all hearts? There is none what so ever. Have you ever read about the life of Saul, God change his name to Paul. He stand by and watch his companion stone Stephen to death, but Stephen ask god to forgive. One day Stephen and Paul will be in heaven together, Dominican we don’t like to forgive. You all should be ashamed of your selves. God God God ,where in the bible which states that when a human being is murdered ,his or her spirit hunts the murderer,. if God is a forgiving God would he allow his children to suffer after they have sinned ,asked for forgiveness and was forgiven? Are we not playing God our selves?
This man is not different from us,maybe we have not killed any one but we have lied ,steal ,fornicate etc .There is no big and small sin in the eyes of God.in the book of mathew 5 :21-28..ch.12v 34 ,,,there are degrees to sin…God is looking for our hearts,,,for what ever sin,,,romans 6-23 the wages of sin is death ,God never said if you kill a man alone,,,God is to big to turn away from sins that are of a lower degree ,,habakkuk 1-13..look up 1 john 1-2 ..sacrificed himself for the whole world ,he never said he was excluding joseph because he is a murderer ..
when someone is dead they are well dead ,any one of us would have killed or commit any crime against out brother and sister should go to them and ask for forgiveness then turn to God and ask for forgiveness ,,,because if we don’t love those that we can see how can we love someone that we have never seen…

Browne, C (Rastafari), with a name like yours, why would you want to bring this man to the barber’s? How do you know if this man is not a practicing rastafarian? But yes after serving a sentence usually people in society usually feel like those who were incarcerated should always be in jail or ostracized. People here act like they can never end up in a situation that will lead them there. But life is funny. the same person you laughing at or judging for going to stockfarm, you might end up sharing a cell with them, and is probably they that will show you u how to survive in prison. some of you may crack a buller joke right abt now but thats the reality of it all. U in jail and you cannot even drink water from a cup cus you dont have one. is a next man that more fortunate inside there that give u a cup..or a piece of container for u to drink ur water and tea. keep you head up padna. August 27, 2014

I know Zai since he was a little boy. Where are his brothers? He has lots of brothers. His mother just up and left for Canada one day. She took the girls and left all the boys (little boys about 6 to 10 years) to fend for themselves. She never returned to Dominica. He had a hard life from he was a child. One night his father disappeared and never returned. The story is some man came and called him to go for gas and he left with the man, never to return. I heard he was thrown overboard from a boat. I nursed Zai at the hospital after he was found in the precipice (after 7 days). When he came, he was smelling so bad, people were running. His foot was actually rotting and he was in a lot of pain. We were ordered by the head nurse to wash him with Jays to lessen the stench. HIs rastafarian brothers never even said there was a man down in the precipice, they just ran and left him. A lady who was going to her garden said she heard somebody groaning and saw him trying to drag himself out. Zai acted with a lot of his Rastafarian brothers and he was the only one that got caught and went to jail.

@ Anonymous …………I have my suspicion that the “fight” is on and it is supported by people who were left wing radicals of the 1970’s. These same people were promoting the legalization of pot ( just one clue) and were opposing the Labor party then. They were supporting radical dreads, until the dreads turned on them. (You can talk to Angelo on Q95)
Those same people are now operating as right wing radicals, Right -wing populists. They are infiltrators who pursue their goals by any means necessary. That is just my suspicion.

    • Emile Zapatos
      August 28, 2014

@ Rasta……..you are right. The “fight” is still on.
But you are wrong on two counts. The fight did not begin at four corners, but in virgin lane, and then under power where the leaders were teaching youths to turn their hair to dread locks. Secondly the dreads saw PJ as enemy number one.
The “fight” continued with the promotion of black power, the technical removal of Edward LeBlance from office, the committee for national salvation and the alliance to name a few. Ask Alcid Joseph who almost went the wrong way like has brother but was influence by some senior civil servants towards good behavior. He almost joined the fighters. the fighters removed P J from office, and now they want to remove Skeritt.
But now the “fighters” have changed their appearance , they have become DAAS masquerading as new uwp team. The evidence is in the DAAS membership list as provided by Raglan Riviere a founding member of the 14 year old DAAS organization whose executive have never changed inspite of elections every three years.
Their method of promoting instability and opposition to the DLP have not changed.
They are full of empty promises to fool people. They have promised Presidential and ministerial offices in exchange for support.
So yes “the fight” is still on: the boycotts, the demonstrations , the daily attacks on Q95, the name calling , the criticism , the obstructions, the propaganda and all the negatives at home and abroad.

There should seriously be a program in place to re-integrate these prisoners back into society. Some people in the private sector with some form of Government assistance should form an organization to assists in getting these guys back on their feet as functional and productive citizens in society. If not, these guys will be left to steal to survive which will then begin another cycle of incarceration. Where is the Rastsfarian community that lobbied for his release and promised to take care of him. Have the Nyabinghi community forsaken him. Any way hold strong

Where are all the people who were calling for his release, mainly the Rastafarians, since his release not one of you all have ever looked for him, he is sleeping on a bench in Newtown now. Shame on all of you, but Mr Joseph life is a funny thing and we must learn that what we did in the past will always come back to meet us, in many different ways.

I am happy to see that you want to let others know about making the wrong decisions in life. Because I watching these boys in my village and it is sad to say not one of them aiming for better. They think smoking, and playing bad man is the way to go… :( :( . I hope your message will change the paths of some young people. Because we really need it.

that is not rastafarianism. That is being a nuisance if you are not contributing to your community. These are dreads not rasta.

I have seen that request before and the same story repeated. Only a truly restored guy should be allowed to educated others. I am not sure he appears changed. Or he may be a product of his deeds.

I agree. He gave his story and various people came to his aid, he even received a sewing machine and his daughter was at his side, But unfortunately the man is not a changed man.
