Mondesire as Miss Dominica 1971

Miss Dominica 1971, Anthea Mondesire, has passed away in Canada.

DNO understands she passed on Saturday, June 25, 2016.

Mondesire won the Miss Dominica crown in 1971 and went on to take home the first ever Miss Carifta crown that same year in Grenada.

She was later featured on one of Dominica’s postage stamps.

She was the sister of the late Myrtle Mondesire-Solomon, a journalist who worked in the West Indian press in Toronto in the 1970’s and 80’s and a former manager of DBS Radio. She was also a sister of Alicia Mondesire, a development worker who is domiciled in Toronto, but who was based in Grenada and later in St Lucia during much of the late 1970’s into the 80’s and ’90’s.

DNO understands she was about 64 at the time of her passing.

Mondesire will be laid to rest on July 6 in Canada.

I saw Anthea approximately two years ago at the funeral of Evadney Charles. Evadney was another Miss D/ca. Evadney’s passing was shocking. We did not expect it. She was a good friend of mine and I really took her passing hard.
Toronto or rather Ontario is a huge place. We cannot possibly see every D/can frequently nor can we keep in touch with everyone. However, when we meet it is a pleasure to interact with each other. This was how it was with Anthea.
We spoke after Evadney’s funeral. I told her I had a dream of Evadney after she passed on and it included her sister Myrtle Mondesire-Solomon. To my surprise, she showed me a picture of Myrtle and Evadney which she kept in her purse and said Myrtle and Evadney were friends.
To a certain extent, the dream was pleasant. Myrtle held my hand and said to me, let us go to view Evadney. The dream-setting was in a church. Myrtle had passed on a few years prior to Evadney’s passing.

Anthea is, who we call a regular person. What I knew of her, there was not an ounce of pride in her. She greeted everyone whom she knew of course. She was a very friendly person. It was a pleasure being in her company..
I also attended her sister Myrtle’s funeral in Toronto. I also saw her sister Joan who resides in the US and Roy who resides in Montreal. All her siblings were present at Myrtle’s funeral. The Mondesires are all nice people.
I expect to go to the funeral parlor to pay my respect and hope to attend her funeral.
It is sad that she has passed on but our loving God knows best.
Eternal rest grant unto Anthea, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen!
May the soul of Anthea and other souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!

RIP baby boomer. I wonder if she’s one the Mondesies who had the shop on– I forgot the name of the street. The same street with AC Shillingford shop. Anyway, I left a long time ago and can’t remember much about street names.

Yes! They were very well known. I knew all of them. They had a shop, also sold ice cream in lower King George V Street, near Green’s, if you remember that area. They all are (were, those who passed on) nice people.

I met Ms. Mondesire on at least three occasions through work. She was a regional consultant in demand. She struck me as a self-assured professional. She was courteous and had a ready beautiful smile. May her soul rest in peace. My condolences to her family. (I believe she was a sister to the late Myrtle Solomon, the former General Manger of DBS Radio and of whom the calypsonian Rabbit penned and sung the very popular ‘Run Solomon, Run’).

Must be born long after she migrated that disqualifies U.
Don’t get into what U know not.
Leave the politics aside man. I dislike politicians and social BS too but she was not only fine physically but truly a lovely human being.

      • June 30, 2016

You idiot, what color and what name? She won outside of Dominica at a time when small states like dominica were struggling to be recognized for their talents within the region. Her dark complexion spoke volumes to her beauty.

In fact it was not a bad comment. They need to learn about D/ca – Roseau in those days.

    • June 30, 2016

No No No! Like seriously! Some Dominicans are so sick. The kinds of things you say with your mouths sickens me. Even in death the ignorance still lies ahead. Nobody is perfect…some of you all behave like you have never done nothing wrong in life. We do so many bad things and we expect god to forgive us but we want to hold our brother and sisters to their throat. All sin is sin. R.I.P to the Lady and my condolence to the family.

I do not know why you got thumbs down. You stated something which was a fact and which I endorse and those who knew about the situation. Those who gave you thumbs down may not know what D/ca was like in those days nor heard of it. Nevertheless, she must have performed very well which is why she won the D/can crown then.
Dominica then had a status situation. Strange, recently I had this type of conversation with someone. It did not affect me for my family and I are well-known in D/ca.. Won’t say anymore about that. :)
We also know that times in D/ca have changed. There is not much of that now. I still like the status (not to lord it over anyone) for without that, who would I be in Canada? It helps to maintain a certain degree of class, dignity and to be respected and to avoid associating with the wrong people. Interacting with others, they do notice it. It is an asset.
Anthea was a very nice person. So sad she passed on. RIP.

She was a real Dominican Beauty.
DNO you could confirm her age before posting the story. I am sure you only needed a few minutes.
The man in the picture: Governor Sir Louis Cools Lartigue “For those who didn’t know

ADMIN: The little we have is the product of many hours of phone calls, including many calls to Canada. Miss Dominica 1971 migrated soon after winning the crown and a whole lot is not known about her. So we are not sure of the “few minutes” you are talking about.

      dear EnfantDiable,
May her soul RIP, but people don’t receive ETERNAL life by just being beautiful and having name, or having done good works,
It is only through accepting the LORD Jesus Christ as one’s personal saviour that makes U or me obtain ETERNAL LIFE, have U accept Jesus Christ as your personal saviour? well I have, and the door of mercy is still open if U have not, then do it today!

      • EnfantDiable
        June 30, 2016

“Concern Citizen” I said: “MAY she find eternal life”!!I suppose since you and those like you are the one(s) dispensing IT you may have a little left over and will decide accordingly!

People as you are the ones who judge others and then turn around and say they judge you.
There is one thing about people as you who think you are more holy than others and then you turn around and criticize and denounce their faith and devotions which is a mark of not loving God and others. God knows about people as you. You save your soul and let others save theirs.
There is a lot you do not know about God, His compassion, mercy and forgiveness. I know you will never learn this although you should know that it is in your bible coupled with godly enlightenment..
As heard on Catholic TV/Radio: A man had the Bible opened. He heard God say to him: “You want to read Me or you want to meet Me.” This is for all those who read the Bible as a book and who do not practice what The Lord taught. I know you need a lesson in this, “Know what the Lord taught us and the writings of St. Paul”, as inspired by the Holy Spirit. Those who practice it will enter God’s Kingdom.”
