No support from St Vincent for Dominica’s Commonwealth nominee

Scotland is Dominica’s nominee for Commonwealth General Secretary

Do not look to St Vincent and the Grenadines for any support, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves told Britain’s Baroness Patricia Scotland of Asthal, who is seeking regional backing as Dominica’s nominee for the position of Commonwealth secretary general, the Barbados Sun reported.

Gonsalves reportedly wrote to Scotland, a sitting member of Britain’s House of Lords, on Monday reaffirming his country’s position, after indicating during the closed door talks at the recent Caribbean Community (CARICOM) heads of government meeting in Barbados that she would not have his support.

“Despite your impressive scholastic and professional accomplishments, including the holding of important public offices in Britain, the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines considers it improper and unacceptable for a member of any parliament, in your case the House of Lords, even on extended leave, to serve at the same time as secretary general of the Commonwealth,” he wrote.

@forreal July 20, 2015 “Who the hell you think you are,age of two or age of fifty, she is Dominican,
,doesn’t that occur to you, what crap you are writing crying down our people, support your own fine, but don’t get outta hand on a born Dominican, we Dominicans always feel connected to our people, and this is exactly what skerrit is doing, supporting his own,can you blame him for that,?and besides she’s only a nominee, dummy”—

Your thumbs rating is critically negative; the “Grenadines” individual a top positive . Thumbs up #3 is mine to you

But I feel it in my bones, that you spoke to an “imposter”–Grenadine is a pure Dominican, against PM Skerrit and his government–the sentiments of that individual is a”deep” conviction through my ability of discernment–a gift from God.

That is why we need to think and speak our own minds–there is a tremendous amount of dishonesty taking place here on DNO–I wish there was a way they could correct this futile practice.

Look at them… they claim they independent… but they are fighting amongst themselves as to whether a sworn member of the British Parliament, The House of Lords, should be their representative…. Really, in the 21st Century? Yet we want reparations from Britain for slavery. Okay, so the representative from the slavery system was born on island… well I guess she is one of us! Really?

Nice guys finish last. Dominica’s Prime Minister needs to be cold-blooded and make decisions that are in Dominica’s best interest. I don’t blame “Ralphy-Boy” at all. It is Skerrit’s fault why we do not have a proper airport. “Ralphy-Boy” was never elected as the Prime Minister of Dominica. Why do we expect him to make decions that are in our best interst?

Regarding this woman in London, this is a right of passage. Every island tries their best to have their own be elected to these positions. No suprprise here. We got Dr. Etienne at PAHO why not go two-for-two, as long as she will represent our interst.

I would surely not give her my support; as she was the most unhelpful fellow Dominican in a position of authority I have ever come across when her assistance was sought out in the past – she did not even have the good manners to respond to a letter. Now the boot is on the other foot, it is expected that support should be afforded to her as a matter of course, Awaaah!!!

Be careful who you distance, as one day you will need them!!!!!!

It seem that some labourites are ready to admit that Ralph fooled skerrit and convinced him not to build an international airport.so now even in the presence of mounting opposition from caricom countries against Scotland they those labourites want to stand by their PM.

I see that there is a certain biase in CARICOM and OECS countries with countries doing all possible to tear down certain islands because they thirst for dominance. Dominica’s nominee for SG of Commonwealth is from the Caribbean and she is one of us whether she lives there or not. The same Ralph Gonsalves whom we thought was a friend of Dominica told us that we do not need an International Airport is building one in his country. Should I as a Dominican continue to listen to his lies. I have said this over and over again.

DOMINICA HAS NO PLACE IN CARICOM AND OECS. OUR SALVATION IS TO WITHDRAW FROM THIS MAN EAT MAN AND COUNTRY EAT COUNTRY ORGANISATIONS AND STRENGHTEN OUR TIES WITH ALBA. THESE OTHER ISLANDS ONLY SEEK TO PULL US DOWN. THE EVIDENCE HAS BEEN THERE FOR DECADES. They are afraid that when we rise, we will surpass them. We have to start thinking Dominica because all them that we think are our friends in the region are not. We have to look out for ourselves.

Baroness Scotland is not unintelligent and by now she must have got the message that her candidacy is controversial and causes a lot of negative comments in the region she wants to represent. If she really cares about the Caribbean and wants to maintain harmony she should seriously consider withdrawing.

  12. Papa Dom
    July 21, 2015

I am trying to follow this conversation but I’m a bit confused. Persons are talking about whether the person selected is able to represent the interest of the region but I would have thought that as leader, whomever is chosen will be partial and not represent the views or interest of any one group. If the criteria is to represent the views of any one grouping then Ron Saunders is eminently qualified, having done so in the past. If that is not the criteria then Baroness Scotland, by virtue of her academic and political achievements is equally qualified. In my view the disqualifying vice would be whether in the past either candidate has demonstrated bad judgement sufficient enough to question their ability to lead; in the case of the Baroness some would say yes. The problem with skerritt is that he has a tendency to put persons forward for positions simply on the basis of them being Dominican. This in some instances can be a good thing as it would advertise Dominica but not in this…

The chauvinists have come out to roost. I wonder if it were a man who was nominated what would they state?
There is still much discrimination, many hypocrites and chauvinistic men, politicians, if not most of them in the West Indies/Caribbean.
If they think she is incapable of performing her duties as Commonwealth Secretary General, let me outrightly inform you, they are incapable of performing their duties as politicians and heads of state. They lack the expertise to think clearly.
Their nationals still reside in poverty. They also have many criminals in their land. Tell me, what are they doing to eradicate poverty and crimes in their country?
I would love to personally inform them all, chauvinists, who oppose her nomination and will not support her, to take a back step. This is putting it mildly. I dare you to tell this to Gonsalves personally.
I am a Dominican. Are you? Are you patriotic enough to stand up to this boldfaced man? I am getting angrier with him.

Facts machine whether you are on or off nothing you say make any sense; I do not see what Chauvinism have to do with this: I am not even sure you have chosen the correct word in this context since you are suggesting undue partiality, or attachment to a group, or place to which one belongs, or has belonged.

In all that I’ve read I have not discovered any attitude of superiority toward members of the opposite sex, if that is your argument! The fact is this woman is not suitable for the position for many obvious reasons: Just because you and Skerrit, and others who said the position is a prestigious position, and it should be given to her other members in the Caribbean does not see it your way.

If Skerrit had any sense of the matter he would have chosen someone else; what do you have to say about people not wanting Saunders in the position also?

Facts, now you are REALLY silly and pathetic. Did we not elect the Iron Lady of the Caribbean , Eugenia Charles, to be our leader? Not everyone liked her style but a a real leader she was, a real woman, a lady and a real Dominican!
Patricia Scotland did us proud to rise in her career as she did but then blotted her copybook and embarrassed her adopted country that afforded her every chance. Hence they do not support her as a candidate for this very important position. Now she wants to play on our emotions by wanting to be seen as one of ours and quite frankly I find that distasteful.

      • July 22, 2015

@Titiwi July 21, 2015 “Did we not elect the Iron Lady of the Caribbean , Eugenia Charles, to be our leader?”

Except that Facts is not speaking about us, Dominicans–she is speaking about “Ralph Gonsalves” of St. Vincent, who is wickedly trying hard to put his thoughts and ideas of his mind in the mind of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

If she decides to label him as a “male chauvinist” that is her Freedom of Speech–maybe he is. When will you people ever learn to read before you write senseless comments–it like one fool makes many fools all the time, here on DNO–good grief!

You sound as foolish as Skerrit FOR REAL. The Domincan Irwin Laroque was elected Caricom Secretary Gen was supported by fellow caricom leaders. The Dominican Dr. Carrissa Ettienne was elected Director of PAHO, her elections was supported by caricom leaders. We as caricom nationals are quite familiar with the works of Irwin Laroque, Dr. Ettienne and Sir Ron Sanders who was nominated by Caricom to serve as Commonwealth Secretary General. We don’t know Baroness Scotland. Is that so difficult to understand? Do you understand that we are also citizens of the Caribbean Community? When Caricom Leaders dicide to appoint or nominate people to important regional and International positions, these appointments/nominations are done based on MERIT NOT ON SKERRIT. Skerrit needs to grow up and stop acting like a spoil brat. Rather Skerrit really needs to be removed from office sooner rather than later.

Are you really serious, or you are simply in support of Roosevelt Skerrit, and because Skerrit wants her in the position, she is okay to you!

In the first place you are talking hogwash, where it pertains to “prestigious office.” Roosevelt Skerrit office is the highest and most prestigious office in Dominica.

Would you say that Skerrit has function in that office effectively?

I say no; if all you desire is to have a Dominican born who knows very little about Dominica, and the Caribbean for that matter in a position simply because she is called Baroness, and you want her in that prestigious position, no one has to wonder why our country is as backward as it is!

Grenadines, your Prime Minister is not a friend of Dominica. Every Prime Minister in the region has their nominee and all I see there is friends and politics that is going on there. Why is the Nominee from Dominica being picked on? Why not Ronald Saunders from Antigua or the one from Trinidad? Is it because she poses a threat to the underqualified men that the rest of the region nominated? Is it because she is Dominican? Or is she from The Poor island of Dominica that yall think that no good can come from it?
I’ve lived in many caribbean countries to know what yall think of my island and it’s people and we continue to back you all up in your plot to keep us down. This situation should not be one about Baroness Scotland or Ron Saunders, it exposes why we as a Caribbean people are kept back because of insularity, pure selfishness and opportunism. Under no circumstances should CARICOM be divided over a representative for such a prestigious office but it is even worse when the fight is within the OECS.
From all indications, Dominica’s nominee will not have the support of its OECS counterparts and by extension the wider CARICOM region. So why is Roosevelt Skerrit so arrogant in trying to embarrass Dominica?
Skerrit behaves like a spoilt child, which we usually refer to as a spoilt brat, he is accustom of having his way and cannot accept the fact that it is either his way or no way. This Baroness Scotland eminent defeat may just be an awakening for Skerrit who will finally realize that his way of doing things is wrong. If the OECS and CARICOM do not support your candidate, give it up! for God’s sake. But NO spoilt brat.

Guy do compare the rest of the Caribbean with Dominica you know; the problem is Skerrit and the idiots who keep returning him to power Dominica, is the most backward, and undeveloped island in the region, and most likely in the world in general.

If you have ever traveled out of Dominica, to any destination in the Caribbean what you experienced as far as development is concerned you have nothing in Dominica to make a comparison. I mean you all can entertain the idea in your heads, that Dominica is prospering; but your fantasies, and myths are only that.

When you have Dominicans telling you that the economy of Canada is a bad as that of Dominica, and the Canadians should use Skerrit’s model as an example to enhance their economy tells me that something is naturally wrong with our people, and you are not exempted

I see people talking about Gonsalves I don’t have a problem with what the man said and how he feels, I respect him more than most of these cowards who would talk behind your back than let your feelings be known.

How do you know Gonsalves is not a coward? Where you are concerned, for now, he appears not to be. I would not trust that man. His day is coming.

Baroness Patricia Scotland should take the high road and step down. And if after stepping down in the interest of Caribbean unity, the PM wants to re-invite her as a candidate then so be it. This is what Ron Sanders did. This would show that she puts the region before her self interest.

Keep in mind also that Baroness Patricia Scotland and Mr. Skerrit belong to the same lodge(the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George) and therefore must support each other.

    • The Real Facts - ON

She did not nominate herself. What you are speaking of that they belong to IS NOT A LODGE. The name alone should inform you that it is not a lodge. You are not an intelligent person. You lack godly spiritual enlightenment.

Why isn’t she the candidate for the U.K., the country where she was brought up, educated, made her career and where is a member of parliament, a Baroness in the House of Lords?
Her connection withe Caribbean, even Dominica is tenuous to say the least and I fail to understand why Mr. Skerrit is adamant that she is the best candidate for nomination by Caricom for the post of Secretary General of the Commonwealth.

She has much to offer and her expertise. Consider, she was born in D/ca and has ties to it. Her heart is not devoid of assisting Dominica and the Caribbean. If they are smart they would nominate her.

You made an excellent point and have likewise foresight. Gonsalves was jealous and wanted to build the airport before Dominica. He did not care two hoots about D/ca if it had an international airport or not. He is a double-crosser and not a credible man. He is no friend of Dominica in general. If you ask me, he is an enemy of Dominica.
I have Vincentian friends. Should this conversation arise I will inform them like it is.

    • July 21, 2015

That’s why I say some Dominicans don’t understand issues instead they refuse to think for themselves so do your research and come away with your own findings, politic should not be in everything we do. The airport is another matter so stop mixing issues..
Gonsalves was and is a better business person than PM Skerrit he put him country first.

I have a personal dislike for Ralph Gonzales, my reasons are that he made a damn fool out of Skerrit, by giving him some very bad deliberate advise, which the Mountain Chicken Crapo mentality Skerrit followed, and messed up our country’s progress.

Nevertheless, I agree with him for not supporting that phony woman; Skerrit has his personal reasons for pushing her, what’s his purpose? Only he knows.
    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Do not hate the guy. He is looking out for his country. He is just exposing …. a PM we have. There is a reason he has the Dr. In front his name. He understands when to make practical decisions, why they have airport and we don’t. Bottom line is all leaders have big ego it is a trait needed. Ralph will not let Skeritt impose on him . He has played him already and will continue to do it. No one can make a fool out of you unless you are already a fool. As I said before in a democratic process the vote of the majority wins and our PM should not force his choice because he suggested thereby holding up the appointment. Skeritt may be good at using his psychology on uninformed illiterate people but he is not the wisest in that bunch. What is important? Skeritt or the region. Baroness Scotland should do us a favour and step aside because it is clear the Antiguan is quite capable and has majority support. Stop being an embarrassment.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        July 20, 2015

I agree that one must look out for their country, but by the same token a leader of another country, should not let someone dictate to that leader what is best for his country and people! Gonzales and the Birds of Antigua conspired to ensure that an International Airport is never built in Dominica.

We have a recording with Ralph Gonzales telling Bird, do not allow Dominica to build an Int. Airport, because building an International Airport in Dominica means that Dominica would become the Hub, and Antigua would loose that privilege. Hence Bird charted LIAT to fly Dominicans home from Antigua to vote labor rather than UWP back into power, while the first phase of the International Airport was in progress.

The day the coalition of which Skerrit was part of, took power, they went to work chasing the contractors from Trinidad out of the country. When that was accomplished, Gonzales went to work building his ow for his people!

I cannot agree with you here at all. Skerritt went to Ralph to tell him( skerritt) what he wanted to hear. The blame for this lies at the feet of Dominicans who chose as leader a person who know absolutely nothing. If skerritt wanted advice on whether or not to build a proper airport that advice should have come from the people of Dominica. As a leader and a government he should have considered all the pros and cons and then come to a decision. I have always been of the view that while we do not have white sand beaches, being central in the archipelago of islands we had a unique advantage. Some said that list would never move their HQ, they have. Now Antigua wants to be a hub for regional freight movement, why couldn’t we have been such a hub?

There are times, more often than not, some of you must put on your thinking cap if you have any and think beyond.
Did you give this a thought? Gonsalves may not nominate her because she is a woman, a Dominican-born and is nominated by the PM. Gonsalves may have an ulterior motive of not wanting her as Commonwealth Secretary General.

‘s. Scotland, for the good of social justice and political fairness please rescind your candidacy. Put personal wants aside and help Skeritt to come down from his high horse. Your resistance is causing lingering friction in our small region called the Caribbean.

  34. July 20, 2015

I suport my island 1000000%, we in the Caribbean do not know anything about this lady, neved heard of that name and fof the leader of Dominica saying that she is the best person for that position is ridiculous, what he need to know is that he will not dictate and treat the rest of us in the Caribbean with his dictatorship attitude and treat us like we do not belong in our island as he treats his fellow Dominican, one thing fof sure he is not the one controlling the region, therefore he cannot go behind our backs and elect this lady and throw her in iur faces, Mr Dominica there is no under thè table deal, no secret signing deal, also no behind other leaders back to appoint this lady some we no little about in the Caribbean, all states leaders in the region have to decide who is the best person suitable for that position, and your British lady who left your island at the age of two, is not the right person to represent us in the region period, and I support my leader

For sure not a dummy like some of you dumminicans, are you fof real?, dumminicans always feel connected with it’s people, this is a big joke, your leader is so disconnect with you people he called you people global citizens in your own island, you people are so connected that you leader keep selling out your island tk unknown people all ovdf the he globe, connected that he is going all over Asia signing over your country and you people have no say in what taking place in your island, so connect that your leader is putting you people out of job to give Chinese your island, so connect that your leader is throwing everything down you people throat and you people swallow it without chewing it, so connect you people do not have bandaidin your hospital, so connect that your leader used expired tear gas on you people expressing your democratic rights, so connect that your leader send his military to wipe out a village even sending bullets inside seniors homes, no to your nominee

Notwithstanding, i too, am not in support of her candidacy for the same reason you opined. This issue should have been resolved in caucus at the most recent CARICOM heads meeting in Bimshire.
