After four decades of service to the health sector in Dominica, a Family Nurse practitioner has been given a grand send off into retirement by her community.

Family Nurse Practitioner, Juliana Commodore, retired after serving 30 years in the southern communities of Grand bay, Tete Morne, Pichelin, Petite Savanne, and Bagatelle.

Before that she served for 12 years as a nurse in various areas on the island.

Commodore’s life-long career included midwifery, school health coverage, chronic care management and execution of many health programs.

According to a press release, her role has positively impacted many lives.

“She worked tirelessly in the management of Diabetes, and was responsible for the co-ordination of the district’s eye clinic, and foot care sessions.  She also served as coordinator of the Grand Bay Diabetes Association,” the release said.

“For all she has given and still has to offer she will be terribly miss by the communities of Grand Bay, Petite Savanne, Pichelin, Bagatelle and Tete Morne.” it stated.

On February 23 she was given surprise church celebration where she was showered with gratitude.

A staff dinner and community party was also held in her honor.

Nurse Commodore gave up her dream of becoming a police officer to serve the nation in a gentler way through nursing, for 42 years.

That’s nice that she had a good sendoff. I hope she enjoys retirement as she enjoyed the last forty years of nursing. But then again a nurse may retire but she can never stop beeing a nurse; doing what she loves and it makes people better, makes them feel better…. Nah, not until her last breath. Enjoy retirement my lady you’ve earned a great one.
