Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said the passing of the late John Fabien is a sad loss for the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the community of Grand Bay.
Fabien, the county’s former Health Minister, died on Friday after a long battle with cancer.
According to the prime minister, Fabien has made a significant contribution to the development of the country and his work will be recorded throughout history.
“I have known him for well over 30 years and he worked extensively in primary health care and in environmental health. He is well known for his contribution in that regard,” he said,
Prime Minister Skerrit said Fabien was a very strong and committed member of the DLP.
“Government had the opportunity to recognize his efforts nationally when we bestowed upon him, the Sisserou Award of Honor. It was in recognition to his sterling contribution towards the development of Dominica,” he explained.
The prime minister said Fabien will receive an official funeral.

RIP Mr. Fabien. I heard you were from Bense but unfortunately you didn’t use your office and standing in society to do anything for the village.
What a missed opportunity. Others should take heed..
Mr Fabien was a true statesman. He served with due recognition to all Dominicans irrespective of your political affiliation. He showed a great sense of pride in his contribution to Dominican’s development as he faced the reality of death. Mr Fabien was a ball of joy as he graciously welcomed the many who visited his bed side. We have lost a true champion of health. May his family be comforted that John has finished his course with distinction. Sincerest condelences!!
The Merrifield and Isaac family in Toronto, Canada, the US and at home extends our deepest and sincere condolences to our beloved cousin Ellen Fabien and the entire family: Sidi,Donovan, Erskine, Trevor, Marvin and Erslyn. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Hugo, you had to wait the one year I did not come home to go home? That’s ok,it is the inevitable.
By reading some of your posts, I can tell you received much deserved accolades while here on earth and glad you did not go down as one of the’Unsung Heroes’ in Grand Bay.
I know you gained much wisdom from experience and became quickly aware that life came parceled in fancy wrappings with joy, sorrow and pain. Your death is not the end of you Fabs. The memories you created and left behind will linger on others hearts. Trust me,when remembered they will trigger that smile like the one you always carried on your face. May your soul and all the ones departed before you RIP.
Lovely family man, loved the people and the job. John Fabien will be very much missed RIP.
I have known John Fabien who is from Bense relocated to Grand Bay worked as a Health Inspetor. He was being boarded at our house by my mother Henrillia Leatham Aka Arya or Mamozart. He was instantly loved by the Grand Bay People. He was like a brother to me.Actually he was the first hardcore Reggae Muaic lover i knew of.He did studyded in Jamaica.I rememeber him spining good Reggae tunes also ska in the early 70s.He was enthusiant of Jimmy Cliffe,Bob Marley, Ken Lazarus, Ken bothe and many more. There would be hot topics local and Int in our varander with Joan Leatham Aka Babar,Antony Laron Aka Larow and more. That was just brilliant. He took me to town one national day i was right on stage witnessing the Gaylords Aka GPU and De Boys Adem. When ever i read of article of him on DNOin the past. I was so proud of him.I would always big him up.He was surely a good man. May his soul rest in pease.
Thanks Garford George for your warm and touching expression about John. Yes John had a vocation to unite and build community and reggae music was a suitable genre for that expression…thus his sons have embraced their musical talents and giftedness, building on the cultural community.
One of my precious memories of John, while a co-operative officer on the island, was a visit to the Health Centre in Roseau to find some inspiration and encourage from John. He helped put things in perspective for me. I will miss you my dear cousin and friend. R.I.P
I will never forget the last time that my friend and myself visited John at the PMH. Despite his condition he found the strength to give me that last bear hug with words of encouragement and I felt that he was saying goodbye. John lived and cared for people and believed in friendship over all. He served his country well in various fields such as sports, politics, health and community work. Condolences to his family and may his soul rest in peace.
