In 2004 Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit had the distinction of becoming the world’s youngest leader.
At 32 he became Dominica’s new Prime Minister, after the death of former prime minister Pierre Charles.
For more than a decade now he has been the island’s leader and for many of his followers, can do no wrong.
His critics accuse him of alleged corruption, dictatorial practices, and being responsible for virtually all the ills of the country including violent crime.
But Skerrit appears immune to defeat, despite the numerous allegations.
Today June 8, the man whose “dimples” is a rallying point for both critics and fans, turns 44.
It’s not clear how Skerrit is celebrating his big day today but it is not difficult to imagine that he may be basking in his latest victory at the Soufriere by-election.
It has been speculated on social media that he timed the by-election to coincide with his birthday, so he could celebrate in a big way.
Whether this is true or not, the Prime Minister has reasons to celebrate.
In the run-up to the polls, he said he wanted victory in a big way.
He got his wish since the Dominica Labour Party’s candidate, Denise Charles, swept the election taking 1,342 votes while her competitor from the United Workers Party, Higgs Adam, took 560 votes.
