Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, is to receive an Honorary Doctorate when he attends and addresses the Commencement Ceremony of the Lovely Professional University in Punjab, India next Tuesday.
A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said Skerrit was selected as “Chief Guest of the Convocation, because of what Chancellor Ashok Mittal described as his “enormous global impact”; being among the youngest, yet longest serving leaders in the democratic world today.”
The Doctor of Literature Honoris Causa will be conferred on Skerrit “in tribute to this distinguished record,” the statement said.
During the event, Skerrit will spend time in Punjab State interfacing with the Chancellor, staff, and students of Lovely University, “with a view to selling the virtues of Dominica as an ideal location for an offshore campus of the university.”
The statement said Lovely University “is the largest single campus university in India. It has a student enrollment of in excess of 30,000, with a faculty of almost 4,000, and offers more than 200 academic degree programs.”
From India, the Prime Minister is expected to go Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, “where he will meet with current and future investors, particularly those associated with several infrastructural projects earmarked to start in Dominica in the weeks and months ahead.”
During his absence from the State, Justina Charles, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Culture will act as Prime Minister, the statement said.

This “honorary degree” is really nothing. If Skerrit was such an outstanding and exceptional candidate, he would be receiving one of India’s most prestigious national awards. This is how things are done in the real world of politics. But this “Honorary degree” is just to get him to come to give the speech and acknowledge that he did. probably they couldn’t get anyone else to deliver a speech. It could also mean that Skerrit has a hidden agenda. I sense an exchange in the making.

I know exactly where you got that from, Nevertheless, I am here to tell you that an honorary degree has nothing to do with taking any educational nor academic examination. It is simply a free gift to someone from an educational intuition bestowed on individuals they know they can benefit from financially, or in some other way!

Doctorate in what field of study, this India Doctorate do not worth a dime, as far outside of India, whenever they migrate outside india, their so called Masters and Doctorates are not recognize, for which they have to send their Educational Documents/Credentials for assessment to see if it is comparable to the level of education outside India, also if their profession is regulate and they want to continue working in their feild of studies they have to send their said Degree, Doctorate or whatever educational Documents to the Body representing their profession, I know of too many Indian Doctors, Engineers, Technicians, Lawyers, Pharmacies, Teachers etc sending Education Document for assessment only to know that some of them never stepped foot in a Secondary School/ University. India, Pakistan and China is known for selling Bachelors and Masters Degree also PHD, Perfect example, the Indian guys who scammed students from india stole their monies ran to St Lucia open a fake University
Since you mentioned it which has no relevance to this article, the US is the same. Some people make fake degrees and sell them. Some years ago I heard of a case of a D/can who returned to work in Dominica who had one.
They have their contacts to corroborate that they did in fact graduate with a degree.
It can be done in any progressive country. If they can make fake dollars, fake bus tickets, sports tickets and subway tokens they could do it; anything.
When D/ca gets more progressive, it may very well be done there.

James was my drinking mate, when we got ready we got drunken together. We associated with the Cenac’s from Grenada, one of them was a high court judge in Dominica two were magistrates in Antigua, we were all friends. My grandmother wanted me to do something in Dominica, I told James I need to go, my friend told me he could not give me time off, I left and went to take care of my grandmother business. Before I returned, my friend fired me.

According to DNO, Skeritt will be having a heavy schedule this week and next week travelling all over the world, how is he going to be questioned by the lawyers representing Mr. Linton. Remember he is the plaintiff. If I was the lawyers representing Mr. Linton, I would insist that Skeritt drag his backside to court, he is not above the law. Maybe, we might hear, no law, no judge, no lawyer can prevent me from leaving the country whenever I want, go to hell, I am the P M, I am powerful, judge, don’t get me mad or you will be transferred to another jurisdiction.
Doc, one is almost led to believe that that case was conveniently timed to be heard in the P.M’s absence. However, I am quite familiar with Northeastern (all one word, by the way) University, and worked in American higher education for a decade. Henderson’s Doctor of Law and Policy degree is on par with any earned PhD.
It’s true that Northeastern offers both the programme Henderson completed and a PhD, the difference is not of rank but of purpose, as the PhD is for academics and the doctorate Henderson completed is for practitioners. In fact, Henderson’s doctorate required more credit to complete than the PhD would have!
If his doctorate were subpar then I would say so. But it simply isn’t.
Funny even this may have come at the wrong time when PJ our first is not doing to well.
Having said this, PJ did get a doctorate in 1979 in MetaPhysics.

Congratulation, really looking at a major impact on my country by having more offshore campus on the island, will certainly help the country economy, if it were to come through. But my question is what is it for Dominica based on Education, knowing that right now as we speak, we are having a lot of drop outs, so that says certainly, availability secondary education is not a problem, but the system have a problem. So if we can’t correct that, how can we be looking at higher levels of Education.

Steve, an accredited university in India, accreditation is not the same as that of one in the United States, England, or place like Germany, and other places in Europe.
No one from any University in India, China and such places can come here and use it to gain employment, and if you do not believe me go to India, and get a degree, and come here and see if it will help you to get a job. You see all of the Americans, and Canadians going to medical Schools in Dominica, and the rest of the Caribbean.
A degree form Dominica means nothing here until the student does their internship in some hospital here. I think they have an arrangement allowing that. So whether that university in India has a million students, it only means something in India; no place else, not in the rest of the Western World.

You sure it’s accredited by the official agencies in India? India has a population in excess of 1 billion. So, 25,000 students at a school is no big achievement.
Francisco, like any major country, India has universities that are great, ones that are no good, and everything in between. LPU is probably in the middle when it comes to that. People from India and China often do not find the sort of work in the U.S. that their credentials might suggest, but there are other factors at work than those credentials, such as their command of English, how connected their professional network is in the U.S., and of course bias by Americans against foreign job applicants (i.e., racism).
That said, the purpose of Indian universities is to prepare students for life in India, not the U.S. Believe it or not, not everyone shares your goal of living the American dream.

Well I have! I have an Indian lawyer, who handles lots of my business, from evictions, to other civil matters, good as he is, and for all the years he studied here and in London, he still has difficulties commutating in English, due mostly to his deep Indian accent.

It’s UGC accredited (India’s standard) and a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
