Robbery victim relates her experience

Labaad's car was found damaged on a street in Roseau
Labaad’s car was found damaged on a street in Roseau

Thieves broke into the home of a resident of Castle Comfort in the wee hours of Tuesday and made off with her car and a number of items.

Executive Director of Junior Achievers Natasha Yeeloy Labad said she was awakened by the sound of her front door opening at around 1:00 am and realized that someone was in her house.

She pointed out that the perpetrator had used chairs to climb through her office window and then into the house. She said an accomplice waited outside.

Labad said the thief entered her bedroom and shone a light into her eyes.

“What you came for?” asked Labad.

“Whey de gold?” was the response.

“Well I have my gold chain in my neck,” she responded.

She told DNO that she took off the gold chain and handed it to the thief but he was not satisfied.

“What else you have?” he demanded.

Labad said she told the man she had a TV and Nintendo DS, among other things. “I was like naming all the objects that he could obviously see,” she stated.

She remarked that she gave the thief her silver bracelet but apparently he didn’t want it and he threw it back at her.

“I gave him my wedding ring but ask him if I could keep it,” Labad related.

She said to her surprise and for some strange reason the thief handed back the ring. “And then it’s almost like I felt very familiar, like I knew this guy,” she stated.

She then said the man turned away, went into the living room and picked up her car keys.

“I was like, ‘you going to take my key?'” she noted. “And he was like ‘yeah’ and I was like ‘you gonna take my car?’ and he was like ‘yeah.'”

She said she informed the thief that her house keys were on the bunch of keys. “He went outside and actually took off the house key and sent it back and said ‘here,'” she said. “I went inside and just locked the door and went to my room.”

The police were alerted and her car was found abandoned and damaged on a street in Roseau.

Additionally, her camera and a 18-karat gold chain with a shell pendant was stolen. She said the total cost of the items stolen and the damage done to the car, is about $60,000.

Labad said in her opinion the thief is not a ‘bad man’ but was desperate and was looking for something to make a quick money.

Did the lady think she was in the court of law? What kind of questions are you asking a THEIF in de middle of de night. She is one lucky woman, had it been elsewhere, or, had the man been really angry, she be a dead duck by now. When and if someone enters your property in de middle of the de night, pleas don’t ask him, ” wat you come for?” What else do you think he needed? Therapy? too cuddle? I cannot believe mamselle and the guts she had. I would have offered EVERYTHING to that dirt bag and plead for my life. Next time he returns she might now be so lucky.

Some driver he is to damage the car. He did not get very far and he got into an accident. Where did he hope to go with the car and how could he hide it? I hope he is caught.
He also took her jewelry. If he tries to sell her possessions, he should be reported to the police.
He used chairs to climb through the window. Does it mean the window was opened?
It is wise not to keep items in the yard which criminals could simply lift easily and use them to commit their crime as this man did.
Keep your doors and windows locked and secured especially when not in and at nights.
If she had a cellular and remembered it, she could have telephoned 911. The police could have arrived while he was committing the crime and even while he was outdoors since he took the time to remove the house keys from the pack of keys and to drive the car.
Now, police when you are called, informed of what is transpiring and are given an address, i.e., all necessary details, you should not hesitate. You should immediately leave for the location.
She heard them had time to immediately 911. Do not wait for the criminal(s) to approach you for you do not know what they are up to. It is said that thieves commit two crimes, theft and murder. Thankfully, he did not physically harm her.
Does Dominica not have a 911 system connected to the police station?
If not, the number could be keyed into a land line telephone or cellular or whatever other hand held device but enter a code of either one, two or three numbers if possible to immediately telephone the police.
If your house is insured, it is imperative that you keep your house secured so that thieves are not able to easily gain entrance with proper locks as deadbolts on the doors. Otherwise, in the event of a burglary with items stolen or damaged, you may be denied insurance compensation or not as much as you should receive. It could be a long and outdrawn fight with the insurance company to receive any funds.
When it comes to paying for insurance protection of any sort, those companies are quick to collect your money but when it comes for them to pay out, it is difficult to receive any sort of compensation from them or they are slow in compensating it. This is why it is stated that insurance companies are the richest companies or almost richer than other companies.
Sliding doors and windows could also be secured by an inner latch.
Keep at least a mental note of those who you observe and speak to you as you are entering your home or also at your work place, be it a customer/client and what the conversation was about.
Be careful what you state in public for all to hear. Do not give personal information to unauthorized people and of your whereabouts and if you are alone, live alone or are married, single, widowed or widower. Those who know, know. Those who do not know should not be told.
Be careful what you state in public for all to hear.
There is so much more safety advice the insurance company and the police could give. The police authorities should lecture nationals on safety of their homes and keeping safe including what to do especially in the event that home owners hear criminals are in the process of breaking and entering their home or is in the home.
You should do your utmost to lock yourself in a room/bathroom, do not speak, also keep quiet if you had time to telephone the police and after. In the meantime, pray to God for your protection.
Another thought, for your safety, if it is possible to leave the premises, quietly go out and hide somewhere, please do so. You never know how vicious the criminal(s) might be. Better to be safe than sorry if you survive.
Advice from insurance companies and the police including myself is free of charge. No cost. No charge. It was a pleasure to offer this which is part and parcel of my characteristic trait, always trying to help where necessary, all for the love of God and neighbor.

“He went outside and actually took off the house key and sent it back and said ‘here,’” she said. “I went inside and just locked the door and went to my room.”

does that mean that she followed the thief outside?
if she had to “go inside, lock the door and went to her room”

and that story sounds too calm, cool and collected….like she’s dealt with this before. Having a conversation/dialogue with a voleh, even asking for items back. That just seems so “werid” in the light of things, and all what has been going on in Dca.

    She seemed very trusting. WEIRD

Strange isn’t it? This is a strange happening. I like the manner in which she handled the situation (without a gun or weapon). She appeared cool. I do not know if I would be so cool.
She must be a practicing Christian and is blest and graced (I hope). She must have said her prayers prior to going to bed. God protects and gives us such a demeanor even under shocking, fearful and difficult circumstances.

    June 19, 2013

I have a problem with the fact that the Police was not called after the thief left. No mention at all. A woman alone living in her house, as soon as he left with the car, I would be screaming or getting to the Police. look at how Marvlyn Robinson was murdered in her own home, there was also an accomplice involved.

For me that is way too casual. Ms. Labad did say it felt like she knew the person, he felt familiar (trust me her intuition may not be wrong). Police needs to dig deep and investigate. Then again we have no forensics here to help or lie detector test to validate that story. DA needs help in solving crime. That’s where we need to reach out to the good old USA for.

Just say thank God the thief didnt harm you!!! About a year ago I was robbed of $4000 I had just loaned from the bank to take my son for medical treatment overseas. Thief came into my house but I didnt hear a thing because Iwas fast asleep?? Couldnt sleep after that for days!!!!

    June 18, 2013

She is fortunate that he did not harm her. He came to steal; not to harm. What if she had resisted him? Would he not have harmed her? Nevertheless, he is bold. He probably knew that she was alone in the house.
She heard the person in the house. It is your life, your house and possessions. If only she had a gun, she had the time to take it, point it at him and shoot him, at least in both legs.
Dominicans really need to protect themselves from those thugs. I believe that the time has come, more than time, that the outer doors and windows should have rot iron barricades. There are some houses in Barbados and also most houses in Trinidad which have those barricades. The thieves cannot get in. Some houses have concrete windows with holes. Thieves could never break and enter such houses. All in all, the houses will have to be built differently so as to deter criminals.
An alarm system should be installed in every home especially the new ones, dating back to as much as 15 years ago. Those are modern homes.
Thieves are desperate. They want money and also to purchase illegal drugs. Nationals must take steps to prevent them from stealing their possessions.
Jewelers should not purchase gold jewelry from anyone without ascertaining that it belongs to them. Other nationals must not purchase this jewelry from them. They should know that the jewelry was stolen. In fact if anyone approaches them to purchase jewelry, they should alert the police. Keep this in mind and be alert.

These upsurge in crimes is part of a larger problem, lack of morals.

Unemployment and many of the other problems are no excuses to steal. These thieves are not hungry, naked or lack the basic necessities of life. It is simply when people believe in the god of materialism and worship of their desires.

    June 18, 2013

I applaud your bravery and confidence. I do not know what I would have done. Things are really getting out of hand in Dominica. Thank God, he did not harm her. The police needs to step up and it look like we need to have a special squad to deal with these people but even when they are being dealt with we cry down its police brutality.
Also when these things happen the powers that be including the Minister of security must condemn those acts vehemently.
It is my understanding that a policeman was given matching orders from a community in the North because it was reported by the trouble makers in the community that he was too hard on them and that they would not vote for the present parl rep so he was removed.
When I hear these things I shiver because its the beginning of things to happen. MORE CRIME!!

Eh beh rite on q I guess I watching too much tv too. I like FBI Files and Cold Case. I happen to know the show Tristate is speaking off the man was indentified by his voice at an emergency room by one of his victims who was there with her son and heard him speak. Nobody wanted to believe it was him. He also had a fetish of stealing and sniffing dirty undies. Anyways some of you need to respect people. I read what Tristate said and what she did was show how not all crimes can be the same or violent. You all find it hard for the woman to speak to the man this long but she saved her life by so doing. Since people something don’t suit some of us its a conspiracy or lie. You need to read more and watch intelligent shows on tv.

well done miss..you did the right thing in handing over everything and keeping calm. Material things are not worth ure life..u did a very smart thing and just stayed calm and not to aggravate the situation. As it was stated he had an accompliss and any heroics on ure part could have led to you being overpowered easily by these men and you could have been hurt.i and the rest of dominica have zero confidence in the police force to solve anything or to do their job,but karma and god exists in this world and these men will get theirs..thank god you are safe..

Utter rubbish!! Go live in a country where lawlessness prevail. and see how long you would live. It is what it is, and in your haste to cry Down our police. Instead give them credit and thank them for the thankless good job they usually do, smarty, like you quick to take a swing at the police. Not so fast buddy” I am aware that every body is entitled to their opinion case it is like an A?? hole every body has one! We have been reminded all the time by the police,That the public is the eyes and ears of the police, the police cannot be every where at the same time, much less to be at the right place at the right time, its not magic, nor are the police are super Woman or super man. Now lets be factual and ask the most intriguing questions. {1} by the victim`s own admission it appears while her door might have been secured, the culprit/s had little trouble entering her house, {2} she claimed the culprit/s used a chair to gain access to her office with little difficulty, why some of us are not asking the real questions such as why the chair used was where it was so as to be easily, used to gain access into the complaint`s home? The responsibilities lies with us taking the necessary actions to limit or at best make it difficult for low life`s like those who pray on Law Abiding citizens of our Country. Education again, why was her keys so readily available for the culprit to grab hold of, it could have been a firearm lying on her table whilst she went too bed, that’s our functions as home owners to ensure that our homes are as safe as possible and our valuables are kept in a safe place. I have no idea weather she own the house or not but regardless, that house needs to be checked and be made more secure, no mention if she was a victim of such crime before, if so, seems there`s no mention of a security alarm, and the likes at that house. Let me give this poor victim full credit for remaining calm that was great on her part, also to calm the thief and engage him in a none hostile manner or other wise it could have been worst. We all have to take measures to secure our homes or have, where ever, we resides to be as secure as we possible can, a stitch in time saves lives and that life might be our own. The reality remains there`s crime all over and will continue to be that way regardless of where we live in this World lets be clear about that. But we cannot sit like ducks make life easy for those low lives and when they strike SOME are quick to blame the police. To MR REAL TALK” TAKE that and ponder over it and go put your house in order if it`s no already so for you may be the next victim and that should serve as a lesson for you and those like you who like to jump on the backs of our Law officers. Hope you will look at things at various angles instead of blowing hot air against our Law enforces. Remember they are all we have and we cannot do without them not for a Day in our lives. From a former detective who have been there done that and knows it`s always easier said than Done. Long live the Dominica police Force. Once a cop always a cop, and always willing to serve and Educate from far,
      [

U.S.A or at home, I hope the victim will assist the police with a good description of that low life and the police will caught up with him/ or her as soon as possible before they strike again.

I should have known better. Sorry D.N.O. it might take a week to moderate my comment. Prove me wrong.

        June 19, 2013

I recognize that as we write thoughts flow which is why the writing becomes long (er) and not at first intentional.
Why do you not insert paragraphs in your writing? It will make your writing easier to read.
DNO told you about that. If you wish, you could also divide your writing into two separate ones.
Paragraphs and punctuations are important. It surely gives a headache to read it. Actually, for obvious reasons, no one really writes or should write in such a manner without inserting paragraphs and also punctuations.

What’s with the sarcasm about the conversation she had with the man? Everybody deals with stressful situations differently. Not every woman is confident enough to try to physically resist a MAN in your house at 1 a.m.

In fact, I find her approach to be quite brave. As a woman I would have been scared to death.

She must have appeased the thief by being so “cooperative”. Perhaps if she were aggressive he might have hurt her. It was an easy “steal” for him, but I am glad that she is unhurt. The things stolen can be replaced, as opposed to her life, if she’d lost it.

I hope that she will be ok.

As for me… I got robbed here in Jamaica at knife point and I wet myself. the funny thing is like two days before my friends and I were saying what we would do in that situation… I would ask the thief “Where’s Ashton?? Am I being punked??”” …when it happened all jokes went out the window. Glad Natasha lived to talk about it.

Sad thing is that the Majority of Dominicans bury their heads in the sand with pretence…

Dominica is a bad shape folks, sitting and remaining silent is not the cure…

it will come into your homes, at your work places, while you walk the streets on the beaches even in the place of worship….

the fitting point is that the religious folks in Dominica sugar coat things..

the program on Q95 on fri am at 10am till 1130am is way too timid afraid to call things as the are.

didn’t Jesus overturn tables back then when folks who knew better were found wanting my him..

why is the church not calling a spade a spade, why are they afraid to speak the truth..

it’s is claimed that Haiti is 99% Voodo and 1 % religious…Dominica is quickly in second position

what a bunch of hypocrites the majority of dominicans are!

“Dominica is in a bad shape folks, sitting and remaining silent is not the cure”.

Of a truth dat! It’s time to fight back or soon we all will be cowering in our homes like Trinidadians after dark!

When the Nazis came for the communists,
      I remained silent;
      I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
      I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
      I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
      I remained silent;
      I wasn’t a Jew.

      When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
