Sports complex renamed in honor of fallen footballers

The government of Dominica has taken the decision to rename a sporting complex in La Plaine to honor the two national footballers who died in a tragic accident in Pont Casse on April 19.

The facility which went by the name of  ‘R. M. G Sports Complex’ will now be known as ‘The Kurt Hector and Norran Jno Hope Sports Complex.’

“Their contribution to sports in Dominica will forever live on the lips, and in the hearts of residents and visitors to La Plaine, the Southeast and in Dominica’s history,” MP for La Plaine, Petter Saint Jean, said in announcing the name change.

Additionally, the Government of Dominica will grant two Scholarships to the Dominica State College (DSC) to aspiring young sports personalities of good academic standing in the Southeast in honour of both Hector and Jno Hope.

“A Government Scholarship will also be awarded to Kelly Hector, daughter of Kurt Hector, to facilitate completion of her studies at the Dominica State College,” Saint Jean also announced.

“I wish on behalf of the Government of Dominica and the entire community of the southeast to extend sincere condolences to the families of the deceased,” the MP said. “The gestures in the names of Hector and John. Hope are the government’s way of memorializing the two while also committing to the further development of sports and sports personalities in La Plaine specifically and Dominica in general.”

The feild was not named after Ron Green, it was named after his grand father who donated the land to have a playing field to begin with.If changing the name was such a bad idia, why do it again? why build up more problems in Laplaine? Simply just find some other way. In my opinion, EVERY YEAR give 1 or 2 well deserving students a scholarship to further their education. Help Derick in building a stronger youth foundation in Laplaine. I mean not everything should have to do with politics. Kelly is almost done with collage, although it’s a great idea to help her finish but i know her father would want her to keep going. I want to see Laplaine grow, i miss the old Laplaine, the place everyone in Dominica wished they were from.

It seem like we like to name and name. How many of all you reading this know Jones Beaupierre? Yet our school was named after him. Was there any consultation? Can we safely say he was a good teacher? No body spoke out then. Happy we have a medium to vent our feelings. Thanks DNO

The plying field is undergoing repairs such is the building, Peter please let it complete then you have an official ceremony for renaming. Peter you are trying to put division in the community, stop doing that, the men are not buried yet. What political points are you looking for we will still not vote you.You will have to bring down the Diasporas to vote you to win.

Let’s forget about everything guys. Here is my conclusion of the whole matter: It is just shameful and embarrassing to see politicians use the death of someone to score political points. Does that surprise me with this administration? Absolutely not because I was in Grandbay with them when they used the death of Piero to score points and eventually won the election. By the death of one national hero they got in power and definitely by the death of national heros they will try to stay in power. They just remind me of some guys that like their rum and cannot wait to hear the death of a villager so they could go and drink some free rum. Very shameful though!

Get you all facts straight. the palying field was not named after Ron Green, it was named after his great grand, Rupert Marcus Green> he donated the land to the La-Plaine Village council for the purpose of sports in the 1960’s. in 1999 it was officially named R.M.G. field in appreciation. peter is no sports man,and Kurt would never like for the name to be changed. mr Green was like a mentor, please i ask Mr St. Jean come together with the people of La plaine and play the unity role, not only with your protestants congregation. i think that there are many other ways the guys can be recognised as sports men. you could do a monument for them in the village, name the playing field after them, so many things can be done. to much politics in this country. stop provoking the families of the late Kurt and Norran.

I am not sure this matters you’all. What matters is if we rembember these two men and their contributions to our community. Forget the politicans what ever clour or party they belong to- they will try to get the edge- at least most of them- Petter is doing his thing becasue he knows come next election if the La Plaine/NJ possee dont coem down he will not win. Ron is keeping quiet lokking at how things shake and shpe out. That us what politicians do-But in the end the history will speak for itself- Ron has done so much to develop these young men and Petter also doen much to teach them at La Plaine school- folks its a draw- lets cherish the lives that these two young men lived and lets try to remember them in any way we can- whether it is remaning the field in LaPlaine or anything else- and let the politicans do what they have to do and say what they have to say.

    RIP – Kurt and Norran

you all are here making some foolish assumptions about disrespectful and politics arguing bout the name change. what does sen. ron green has to say about it and does he even object to the name change. you all need to get a life and stop politicize every issue in Dominica. as a matter of a fact this is not even an issue in the community of la plaine so y dont u non-residents of la plaine get ur facts straight before you all come on here and blast my government, and disrespect my parl rep and try to tarnish the good spirit in which we are trying to honor two fallen soldiers a sports veteran and a young boy who made his entire life devoting himself to the game he loved.

it is not want you do on behalf of the dead, it is what you do for the living, the dead have no clue, but we tend to think the dead will appreciate what we do for them, I am always amaze how we treat those that have gone before us and forget about those that are among us and I am not saying to forget them. Send the guy to get treatment and forget about renaming field. Give recognition when they are alive so they could feel it and have a say and to motivate others

It is so sad to see how politics haves blinded some people..I don’t see how this is disrespectful..if anything it’s honouring two young people who were striving for Dominica and la Plaine. I’m very sure that the football started in that playing field and Mr Green should be proud not hurt that it would be renamed after them. We the people of la Plaine will always remember the good Ron has done for us. Stop politicising everything and let’s embrace this attempt to honour and respect Kirt’s and Norran’s memories.

Why are you so shallow? Majority of people in here, including me, are not opposed to honoring the young men who past on. However, there is a very serious ethical issue here. The fact that the place was already named after a Dominican, the previous name should not just be brushed aside. Something else could always be named after them. How about the road to the playing field, or something new. I just think it was very distasteful. My opinion has nothing to do with politics!

It’s a shame to have these boys trapped in men bodies for all these years. I would think that from being in their positions for such a long time they would have matured by now, but it’s a sad thing because from what I can see they are gonna die being just that: SELFISH, EDUCATED, BUT FOOLISH BOYS IN MEN BODIES. I really don’t care who is involved, I find changing the name of a building or monument from one iconic figure in Dominica to another is very distasteful. If Ron did it I would feel, just the same. • truth offends
        April 30, 2013

@I DIE NU,If according to you the sports complex was named after Oliver Graham before it was changed to RMG complex, then you need to clarify some things here: 1.Was Mr. Graham alive when the name was changed? 2. Was the land for the complex donated by Mr. Graham or by Mr Green or his father? 3.If Mr. Graham was still alive at the time of the change, did he feel that the Mr. Green more deserved the recognition? 4. Was the name change from “Oliver Graham Complex” to “RMG complex” politically motivated as this one here clearly is? Was Mr, Graham the parlrep of La
plaine before he was replaced by Ron Green as is the case here? I know Kurt and Ron were buddies in politics, and knowing Ron, I know he will not force about it. However, it is just disgraceful to see a politician to this kind of thing to another politician. If Ron Green were dead then I would have thought differently because the dead don’t enjoy flowers because they are dead, Flowers are for those who are alive so their good deeds could still be a living witness to others. To strip a man who is alive from his flowers is just pathetic and clearly shows the childhoodness and visionless of this government. You mean they could not think of anything else in La Plaine or Dominica to name after these two young men? Oh how shallow are their braines and the brains of those who support them in this!

Do we think, it would have been better if the idea for the name change or whatever else is proposed came from anybody else but the Parliamentary Representative for LaPlaine?

Would that have given some the opportunity to say Ah just imagine, couldn’t the government do something, or name something after the two dead football players, who died on their way to represent the country?

But seeing that the Parl Rep was the first one to come up with the idea must have deflated the opportunity from critizing in a different way.

My condolences to the families and friends of Mr. Kurt Hector and Mr. Nolan Jno. Hope on the death of their loved ones; and to the lone survivor, Mr. Joslyn Prince, who God decided to spare his life for what ever reason known only to HIM. May your recovery be speedy and complete.

This is a tragedy felt by all Dominicans regardless of what party we support and realizing anyone of us or our family could have gone down in that hole but it had to be these two and not us. So Sympathy all around because it is a Dominican tragedy. Dominica is a whole village in times like these.

I would like former pastor and preacher, now Hon. petter Saint Jean explain this bible verse to Dominicans. “Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth (dies), and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: Lest the Lord see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.” Proverbs 24:17-18.
Although the former preacher and his government are not rejoicing over the death of the two young men, but to use their death while thousands of Dominicans are still mourning, to play and errect a dirty political platform is very shameful and disgraceful. The Skerrit and St. jean I know planned that thing.

Whatever cheap political gimmickery Skerritt, St. Jean and his incompetent DLP Gov’t do, the villagers of LaPlaine and in fact Dominicans on a whole would know that Ron Green, Manager of the South East Football Team, continue to play a pivotal role in the development of Sports, not only football, in the constituency.

His vision and ensuing hard work has enabled several youth of the South East to become ardent sportsmen and women, in fact good citizens. Before it was difficult for any country boy to make the National Football Team. Remember, Hurtault from Laplaine, a very skillful, fast footballer, who became the first guy from Laplaine to make the Island team? It was all because of Ron Green’s efforts. Could the same be said of St. Jean?

Kirt and Jno. Hope will always remember Ron Green, wherever they are, in the great beyond. Because for decades, it was Ron Green, on the ground in the community, facilitating club and player development within the community context, who helped them to become better human beings and to excell in their football career.

And not only football or sports, but in many other areas of youth and community development. No one could take those good attributes from you Ron, not even if they try. Kirt, Jno. Hope and Prince, products of the hard, dedicated work of Ron Green.

Petter St Kean taught both these individuals. Don’t you know the great impact which he had on them in their formative years. How can we forget the work over MR.GRAHAM in whose name that the facility was named and what Ron Green did to remove Graham’s name and had it renamed RMG Sports Complex.

I im from La plaine and am not in this politics business at all. No one disputes that Ron Green had been making a contribution for a long while. Petter St Jean is far far younger than Ron and he has done a wonderful job so far. How do you equate a player representing Dominica in Hurtault and the provison of free transportation to our young people in the entire south east and La plaine to go school in Roseau. Its chalk and cheese. Clearly its a major accomplishment from Petter St Jean.
So MR.Graham family suffered injustice and it had to take this disaster for the government to remedy that wrong and I support the naming of this facility in the names of Hector and Jnohope. RON GREEN IF YOU ARE AGAINST IT OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND Say it or if you are for it make a public statement in support. Your silence is dangerous. BE A MAN<<<<<<<all the love we have for those two fallen heroes let us not kick dem like a political football.

How sinister to want to make political capital out of this tragedy. Norran’s and Kurt’s names will forever be associated with a controversial decision in which they had no say. No doubt there are those in power, who will “burst their champagne” in self-congratulation of such a masterly Machiavellian plot (…figuratively speaking, of course!).
It would be more dignified and fitting to let a decent time pass after their funeral, reflect and find a respectful way to commemorate their lives, free of any political overtones or controversy. Yhey deserve at least that.

So happy the govt has decided to offer Kelly a scholarship. So disappointed that we Dominicans cant forget to involve the reds and blues. People, the sports complex was named after Mr Graham who worked hand in hand with Ron Green. Then the same party he supported named the sports complex after Ron Green. What wrong if the government decide to name that same complex after Kirt and Norran? People come on, kirt was a good friend of Ron; come on, get sensible things to talk about. Pure crap, heartless and disrespectful! Shame on ALL who support such crap.
Since this government does not have a mind to think and thus lacking ideas, let me suggest to them that since these two young men were on their way to represent Dominica in Football and were supposed to depart from “Melville hall International airport” according to Seabourn, it would have made more sense to rename the said international airport after names of the two young men. There we go AGAIN!! This is totally preying on the vulnerability and sadness of those who perished, and a serious indictment of this current maladministration. The way to do things properly is simply to develop a POLICY as regards scholarship disbursements. It is wrong to allocate “rewards” at the whim and fancy of politicians. What if I am “un-liked” by the powers that be? We saw it with Chanderpaul, with Shane Shillingford and now with Hector and Jno Hope. Please sirs, stop allocating awards “vye ki vye”, and put a policy in place along with the REQUIREMENTS so that all and sundry will be aware and will also elimate the possibility of being accused – like I am doing here – of favouritism. Why do people get flowers only after they are dead and not while alive so they could enjoy it? Just about a week after these two young men were buried they got lots of flowers, but while alive no flower tree was planted with them in mind. We should be proactive and instead of waiting until someone is dead to heap them up with flowers, give it to them while alive. I hope Mr. Petter Saint Jean and the government does not wait until Shane Shillingford is gone to rename Widsor Park the Shane Shillingford Cricket Arena. Such award while alive would be much better than giving passport, cash or keys of Roseau.

What was the basis for having had the place initially named as ” R M G Sports Complex ” ? Who or what is ” R M G ” ?. R G is the initial of Ronald Green ( R G ). Is his middle name starting in ” M ” ? I am assuming that the name change was done with the consent of those in whose name the facility was previously named. Evidently Government owns the premises and is authorized to change its nomenclature as it sees fit but my hope is that the proper courtesies and processes are followed. I have absolutely no problem with the name change, it is a commendable decision , my only hope is that the proper protocols were followed.

It is also my belief that other tangible gestures need to be put into place such as the following:

    1. HECTOR & JNOHOPE DEPENDENTS BENEFIT FUND be established to ensure that their immediate dependents be taken care of in addition to what other obligations that they left behind e.g. Bills, financial provisions for their parents, children etc.,,. This is on top of the Education provision which the Government/state have provided.
2.FREE MEDICAL CARE to Mr.Joselyn Prince–This would also include the provision of medicines, physical and psychological evaluation, and any other specialist treatment and nutritional care that is needed.
    3. A collaborative effort by the Minister Of Sports, plus The Dominica Football Association Executive, Hon. Stephenson MP for Grand Fond and the Cabinet Secretary and any other concerned citizen/group to recommend Mr. Joseyln Prince to be accorded with the SISSEROU AWARD OF HONOR : Dominica’s Highest Award not for merely surviving this disaster but for having MIRACULOUSLY AND HEROICALLY averted THE FURTHER LOSS OF LIVES on that ill-fated Friday Morning. Were it not for God working through him; it could have been far worse! And there are persons who have testified to this, including Bus Drivers with passengers etc.
    4. We have been told of the internal injuries which Mr. Prince had suffered to hIs lungs, spleen, Liver, kidney etc. hence the dire need for continuous medical monitoring and testings to be done at home and or overseas. We also are aware that he is employed at the FIRE & AMBULANCE Department he testified that his experience helped him in this ordeal. However in light of his injuries am wondering whether it may be wise to have him returned to this work place. It is my view that his return to this current place of employment must be based upon a thorough and deeply professional analysis of his medical and mental health. We are also very much aware of the physical burdens that are attendant to this particular type of work and the nature of Mr. Prince’s injuries. Hence there could well be the need for the Government begin to consider the possibility of obtaining an alternative USER-FRIENDLY TYPE of employment for this gentleman, if so directed after a medical assessment by trained experts.I need not over stress the mandatory need for Mr. Prince to be subjected to continuous counseling.
5.LET us continue to pray for the family of the deceased and the sole survivor and all those who are so directly affected by this tragedy. Too often we leave them a lone after their burials or assumption that they are ok. This disaster united us in many ways and brought out the best in the true Dominican spirit.
JOSELYN said ” WE MUST GIVE OUR LIVES TO CHRIST AND CHANGE”
I WANDER HOW MANU OF US ARE LISTENING TO THE PROFOUNDITY OF THIS POINTED MESSAGE ?
IF WE FAIL TO LEARN FROM THIS MESSAGE FROM GOD THROUGH HIS MESSENGER JOSELYN, THEN GOD’S JUDGMENT MAY REVISIT US IN EVEN A MORE DEVASTATING WAY. I HOPE AND PRAY FOR GOD’S CONTINUOUS MERCIES BECAUSE EVEN WHILE TAKING THE LIVES OF TWO OF DOMINICA’S PROUDEST SONS ; WE ALSO WITNESSED HIS POWERFUL MERCIES. THERE ARE SO MANY LESSONS THAT WERE TAUGHT TO US ON THAT “DARK FRIDAY” BUT THOSE OF US WHO HAVE NOT BEEN SOFTENED BY IT AND CONTINUE THE ABUSE AND HATRED TO EACH OTHER; THEN ITS VERY VERY SAD!!!!!
WE MUST NOT LEAVE ANYTHING TO CHANCE.

DNO, is the La Plaine Sporting complex a national sports arena (like Windsor park is owned and maintained by the government of Dominica), or one owned and maintained by La plaine village council, but financed by the government of Dominica? I am just trying to understand this thing because to me, if it belongs to and is maintained by the people of La plaine then I feel the village council should have made that name change and not the government. If it is owned by the government, then I would understand the name change by the government. Laborites, I know you all give thumbs down without reading or understanding but please try to understand that I am not trying to criticize your party but just trying to get my theory right. Is that OK guys? Please don’t read with your red glasses as you always like to do.

    ***GREAT GESTURE*****

    I know the “official” name wil be;

‘The Kurt Hector and Norran Jno Hope Sports Complex.’ That’s fine!!

But the name on the building should be simply:
“Kurt & Norran Sports Complex” or…
“Hector & Jno Hope” Sports Complex.

This would give it a very “personal” feeling & meaning for which they were to their community and to DA.

    This was just a suggestion.

    -Thanks

Ron Green has been doing a lot for not only sports in the South East, but also for development long before he was in party politics or government. It was fair that he was also recognised.

Hats off for recognising the fallen footballers, but isn’t the RMG Sports Complex already named after Ron Green? Why didn’t the authorities find another way or another institution after which to name the heroes? Is it political mischief? Is that the next level we come to in this country? Only asking.

Not after ron green bur after mr.graham

    • .........
      April 29, 2013

Before the sport complex was named after Ron Green the first name to be instulled on the building was Oliver Graham…..(the oliver might be wrong) but the sports complex was definately named after a Mr.Graham. The soliders who built the building placed 2 plaques on the building 1. with who built the structure and the other with the name of the sport complex but it was removed and then call RMG playingfield…..

so am saying all of that because i think it was wrong to remove the first name from the beginning so what happened before is happening now.

the name has been changed so i hope that will be the last change and no parl rep (past, present or future) name will be on there

        waw Quite interesting indeed.
        What a wonderful observation.
……..from what you are saying the facility was initially named after a MR.GRAHAM.
I knew that it was named after someone before the then Parl Rep Ronald Green decided to re-name the place after himself and didn’t consult GRAHAM’s family at all. Many people spoke about it quietly and were largely not happy with it. They viewed it as a POLITICAL Gesture aimed at bolstering the support of the MP in the area. Now that the background has been established, I think it is a very commendable move to change the name of the facility and name it after kurt hector and Nollan JnoHope. I also believed that the Government must restore the “plack” in the memory of MR>GRAHAM inside the facility.
I called my family in La Plaine and others and they told me that this is the situation. I am a Beaupierre and also distantly related to both Nollan and Kirt. May their soul rest in peace.
