ICT technologies ‘very benefical’ to Dominicans – Kelver Darroux

Kelver Darroux

Minister for Information, Science, Telecommunications and Technology, Kelver Darroux, has said that Dominicans have benefited significantly from Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Darroux was delivering remarks during a contract signing ceremony between Digicel Dominica and the Government of Dominica held at the  St Alphonsus Parish Hall in Goodwill on Monday.

“The government of Dominica has invested a great deal of effort and resources into building Information and Communications Technologies (ICT’s) that has been very beneficial to the people of Dominica,” he said.

He described the signing of the contract as “meaningful to the government of Dominica” because the government has identified ICT as a critical facilitator for socio-economic development as well as a national priority area.

Darroux explained that in 2008 the government of Dominica began the process of integrating all of its offices on a single network.

“At that time we were only beginning to see the advances in technology and the conversions of telecommunications and their potential impact on the telecommunication industry,” he explained.

He said today the telecommunications market has revolutionized operations worldwide and has taken on a much different structure as compared to when the process began years ago, “In the context of information, communication and technology development and the potential growth and benefits of the sector.”

I don’t know the details but I think Darroux has acquired a great deal of exposure to ICT over the years, good ting. Though I’m happy this helps DIGI grow in our market, thank you, I agree with his concern that costs of telecoms continue to go down, and I must add this should be reflected in pricing. Unless you have good clauses in these contracts/agreements that forces the companies to save this client and pass savings to the Dominican public, they will not. Remember Cable and wireless? Big player but boy they have fleeced us, until Marpin got in by ‘court order’, as if for revenge they eventually bought that baby.
Charges and fees are still too high but that hopefully should come down when geothermal becomes reality and Domlec ‘passes savings’ to Dominicans….I’m holding my breath.

In addition the government must have its own data center, that’s very very important.

having its own data centre is putting the cart before the horse.
Currently the government needs to focus on providing Dominica with sources of relatively cheap, and clean energy sources. There have been several conversations about micro grids, but little movement in this area.

@ lightbulb, I see you have gone dim, knock knock knock wake up. It is imperative that any gov’t has its own data ctr independent of any tech firm. So much data, including citizens’ personal data has to be independently controlled by a gov’t entity. E O S end of story!

If that’s what Darroux said, he said alot of nothing. This is 2019, where new technologies are popping up every day.
Dominicans have benefited significantly from Information and Communications Technology How have we benefited? Expound more on that please.
I keep seeing words like “beneficial”,”meaningful”, I don’t disagree, but give two examples? Then he talk about something that happened since in 2008, That’s his 10 year challenge?

How is the signing of the contract meaningful to Dominica? I’m not saying fast internet and communication is not important, all i seeing is Digicel a foreign org (yes they sponsor this and that) going to make 200 million on us.

My point is, we could use ICT to create this and that (saying this and that to be vague) to make money, but “these guys” just concerned in being consumers in the world of ICT, not producers and rubbing (or not take seriously) and new idea one might have, maybe cause they dont understand it.

    Then…
