West Indies Under-19 batsman, Dominican Alick Athanaze from the village of Grandbay, enhanced his solid performance so far in the Under-19 World Cup when he scored 116 runs today against Kenya.

Athanaze has triumphed over an early set back to his World Cup journey caused by the devastating visit of Hurricane Maria to Dominica on September 18, 2017, to make his mark in the tournament.

The young Dominican cricketer said in an article in ESPN Cricinfo that his harrowing experience as a result of the hurricane gave him “the confidence to face any challenge in life.”

He has used that confidence to perform with excellence for the West Indies team in the Under-19 World Cup.

Alick Athanaze is precisely what West Indies needs right now.- a fresh young face hungry for runs!

My boy, you’re the best news Dominica has enjoyed these pass 4 months! Too bad your big-island teammates couldn’t pull their weight and deliver the goods. A repeat Under 19 World Championship trophy would have been nice to go with your brilliant century and other high scores.

We’ll follow your career closely with great pride and excitement. May Jah continue to bless, protect and guide you into more cricketing glory!

CONGRATULATIONS to Alick Athanaze I read the article of his Hurricane Maria odyssey and was most impressed with the young compatriot’s resolve. :-D Here is an example where we can TRUELY use the word RESILIENCE :-D .

I watched him bat against South Africa and was most impressed with his resoluteness and stroke play for a fine 76. To follow that up with an unbeaten 116*, with an average of 109 in the tournament, seem testament to his determination.

It seem he was just picking up steam when the tea had to bow out of the tournament.

NOW COMES THE NURTURING of this young cricketer. Let us all support him, encourage him and help him to keep his feet on the ground and his eyes on the prize. Let us nurture him to become the next BIG BATTING FIND of West Indies Cricket.

Immediately sports Division and Ministry of Education should find ways to assist him in education and sports development and we must all support, guide and encourage him.

    CONGRATS again Alick Athanaze.

First, I want to congratulate Alick Athanaze for a brilliant hundred. In the previous game against South Africa he also had a 76, and a 26 in the first game against New Zealand, which speaks of his progress. I wish him well and hopes he stays focus on his game and a bright future despite the trials of Maria.
His success reminds me of the raw talent we are blessed with in Dominica. I also think of Hodge, who scored a century against TT and has been getting runs not forgetting Jerimiah Louis, who is Dominican, though playing for Leewards and has been having a great season with ball and bat. Sadly these young talented cricketers seems to be blossoming at a time when cricket is at its worse in Dominica, as the government finds money to win election but cant find to invest in sports and cricket, at a time when the vice president of West Indies cricket is a Dominican. Can you imagine how our young people would blossom if Skerrit and Nanthan could come with a plan to bring back cricket?

He is just starting his career. Do not call him a star. That is how their heads swell up and they don’t go any further than where they are. Encourage him, but a star, not just yet.
