Dutch authorities launch investigation after 12-year-old gives birth

AMSTERDAM (BNO NEWS) — Dutch authorities have launched an investigation into the pregnancy of a 12-year-old girl, who gave birth during a school trip last week.

Kirsten Smit, a spokeswoman for the country’s prosecutor’s office, said the 12-year-old girl became pregnant at the age of 11. She gave birth to a baby girl last week during a school trip and was reportedly unaware that she was pregnant. Both are in a good condition.

It was not immediately known who is the father of the baby, but police have begun an investigation and have interviewed the girl. “It is in any case a criminal offense,” Smit said. The age of consent in the Netherlands is 16.

According to De Telegraaf newspaper, the 52-year-old father of the girl was previously convicted of sexually abusing a child in a previous marriage. He served two years for the abuse, the newspaper reported, although Smit did not want to comment on the report.

So far, the youngest confirmed mother in the world is Lina Medina who gave birth in Peru in 1939 to a boy at the tender age of just five. Despite investigations, it was not possible to determine who the father was.

You are being silly, this exercise was for intellectual discourse only. I was inquiring what scientific evidence is there to differentiate between a 15 and 16 year old. This is by no means insinuating that one should break the law of the land and go after school children.

I was speaking about divine law and yes I would prefer my 12 year old daughter married to a 14 year old boy and have one partner rather than she is experimenting behind my back. Marriage is designed by Allah. One cannot force a horny 13 or 14 year old girl to keep still. She needs to deal with those urges in a practical way. She is a human being, she has blood as well. Be mature!

That’s a wrong conclusion, I think I made it clear that this is for intellectual discourse only. I’m inquiring about the legal basis for having the age of consent 16, why not 15 and what is the difference between the two ages for example.

Secondly, you need to travel to different parts of the world. There are many young women who are 13 and 14 who are responsible mothers. It’s how we raise our children. Socialization is a key component.

@muslim not always because i pray that you giv e your life to jesus christ

    they need to have means to channel their sexual urges; when this outlet is blocked they will resort to masturbation, promiscuity, homosexuality and all the other deviated sexual practices.what a load of cr;;;;

married men are guilty of thse acts too, if not more than single men,,,,men leave their wives and go after other men, animals, hookers ….. we were born sinful, it’s our nature, we need Jesus Christ in our hearts to renew our hearts and minds.

      March 30, 2011

I cannot give my life to Jesus. I gave my life to the one who CREATED the messiah peace be upon him.

The priests and pastors have ‘given their lives to Jesus Christ.’ How has that renewed their hearts and minds when there are more reported cases of pedophilia amongst them?

Who knows the scriptures better, you or the priest or pastors?

This is not to state that all pastors and priests are involved, I’m simply saying that mere profession of Jesus Christ does not do anything!

@ Easily: This is a very unique situation and this needs to be looked into. This happened in 1939. Was she raped? How do you know she menstruated? In short, due to the uniqueness of this situation the case needs to be looked into, then one can assess this with principles of divine law.

Muslim, I have personal experience with maturing to early in life; both physically and mentally. I can tell you first hand, that having a child, any younger than in your 20’s will mess you up (that is not to say that I have experienced having a child at such a tender age myself). For quite some time, I felt I was worthless, because I was different from my peers even though, I had the support of m family, and believe me they did all they could to help me. & the truth is unless a girl does not go to school, no matter of what religious denomination/ sect she is apart of, she will always come face to face with peer pressure.
To answer your question, the difference between the ages of 16 and 15 in terms of the age of consent. A girl of 16, is closer to getting a high school diploma, or has already received it, than a girl of 15. This mother, is in a better position to care for their child, because in most cases, the father of the child backs out. That is the reality.
I am not going to slander your religion, and there is no problem in having your faith. However, you made the point that adults also have mood swings. The mood swings of a child are even worse, as well as the mood swings of an impregnated woman. To mix the two is, terrible for anyone involved in the process. It is basically the same thing for a child/ teenager to be in a relationship. One day they may like someone, the next day they can’t stand the sight of them. They are also extremely impressionable at that age, and so (if they were to get married), to a point, they would not have an opinion about the matter. And were more than likely pressured into the decision they ‘make’ – by family or otherwise.
Another point, is the effects of bringing a baby to full term, and all the complications that it involves, and risks that could befall that child. I personally do not think it is fair or just to put a young child through all of that, without exception.
Also at the age of 12/13, a girl has only begun maturing, if any man/boy can look at her and find her sexually arousing; HE IS A PEDOPHILE! – end of story.
I welcome you to believe in your religion, Mr. Muslim, and everyone welcome’s your questions, and the healthy debate that has ensued, from the prompt of this article. But please, do not try and tell anyone of us, that a child is ready to be a mother, because she is much more than her ovaries, and womb. She is a person with feelings and thoughts, not an animal (such as the queen termite – whose sole purpose is to produce offspring). She can become something amazingly great in the future, if you give her even half a chance and an education. If not what you are left with is a cycle of poverty. Because children at 16 cannot provide for their family, and most likely that extended family which is to give support, is also is in extreme poverty as well. Even if those children were able to get a job, and the family able to take care of the child, the would probably become a statistic. One of the hundreds of millions of people, who earn under a (US) dollar a day. Now tell me can you support your family on that :?:

Could you kindly address the questions I asked please.

On what basis do you claim that 10 and 12 is too young? Why Allah gives them the ability to have children in the first place? For good looks?

Rape is when you force someone to have sexual relations with another person. If a girl at 13 has reached the age of puberty, she is attracted to her suitor, the two are married and she willfully fulfils her intimacy with this person, how can this be rape?

The term Rape can be used loosely and often is… just like words such as “good” and “bad” all extremely relative! What you may consider good may not be acceptable by another.
I am not arguing about the term rape but rather the fact that you think that a 10 and 12 year old girl is ready and prepared to have a child. I was once 10 and 12 and frankly at that age I still thought boys were “yucky” I was not attracted to girls but having sex was not on my mind! Times of old , biblical or in the Koran have passed. There is no longer a necessity for women to make children at those ages because the human race is now able to sustain life past the age of 30. Our bodies are still on the same biological clocks although the outside world has changed. With education at a forefront, we have come to realise that there is more to a young girls life than to “bare foot and pregnant”. women have brains too!
Anyway.. if you had weighed other things in your head you would have came to the realisation that a 10 and 12 year old child psyche is not prepared in anyway for marriage (brain washing is not mature), child birth and child rearing. Many have done so, and you cannot say with out struggle. In your other post you said they need to channel their sexual urges! n not by masturbation ect. My Dear, masturbation is the safest form of sex! one cannot get pregnant, get an STI, or face rejection from their “hands” afterwards. I am not a prude! but if I were to have started having sex at ten and I became pregnant, what in the world would I have done? at that aged I have not even completed a primary school education but because “Allah” has deemed it fit.. I will be the best mother and provide for my child?! some children cannot even have well thought out conversions, much-less to raise a child. “Allah” has also given us minds that have created weapons of mast destruction. I guess “Allah” deemed that fit too. “Allah” also gave us better judgment so that we can think for ourselves.
Have u not noticed that the age of consent in Dominica has also been raised from 14.Since U have brought up the argument of the age of consent. I can agree the same as, who is to say a 21 (US)year old can handle liquor better than a 18 (Dca)year old. As the age gets older differences are minimal. If I compare the brain activity of a 5,15, and 25 year old the differences are staggering! Age of consent is just a rough estimation and you most consider why different countries have different ages. The culture, demographic, economy and many other factors come into play. The rate of miscarriages and children born with birth defects are more prevalent in births with mothers that are either too young (average under the age of 16) or too old (over the age of 45). My thoughts on the matter is that a age of consent is precautionary, for both male and female. I see it as a favourable thing. Too often does religion, and morality get confused as each other. I have watched BE,and Sponge Bob not really a soap opera fan. I now watch House, Criminal Minds, Dr G. am I irresponsible in society? I have a career, I have two degrees. Sponge Bob has not prevented me from achieving what I have today. It is called maturity! 10 year olds watch Sponge Bob, then they age.. and he is no longer as entertaining.
oh PS. Homosexuality is not forced by sexual tension as you may want to believe. There are alot of things that we cannot understand in this world but we must stop casting blame.

@ but wait: Where did you get this from that the divine injunctions of Allah has passed?

Allah revealed divine scriptures for all times of course the Holy Quran is the final revelation for mankind. How could you reject divine law for man made laws? You have two degrees yet how do you judge?

Also, you still haven’t provided any scientific evidence that differentiates between a 15 and 16 year old for example.

Also, the idea that there are more birth defects in mothers who are too young are absolutely untrue. The reality is when women wait in their 30s to have children there are more complications, ask any medical doctor.

You advocate masturbation, however, according to divine law it is not permissible to do this. Thus many of the statements you made are based on your desires rather than operating on divine law.

Now stating that someone is not ready for marriage at the age of 16 due to maturity is due to the person’s upbringing. I have seen 13 and 14 year olds who can keep an intelligent conversation yet a young woman at 25 is very childish. Is that a basis to pass a ruling that a young woman at 16 cannot get married?

No, in conclusion, I believe that laws must have boundaries and ethics. It must not contradict science and reason. Having a child at 14 years for example is not a sin. I DO NOT ADVOCATE ANY MAN TO GO AFTER ANY YOUNG WOMAN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 ACCORDING TO THE LAWS OF THE LAND. THIS IS SOLELY FOR INTELLECTUAL DISCOURSE ONLY!!!

You are right in a sense, God gave you a choice to do wrong or right, as long as you reach the age of accountability, as long as that age you are mature enough to make proper decisions. The world have rape to be based on the countury you are in weather it is under 16years or 18years you are to young to make a proper decision. Only the parent of that child know how mature you are to make proper decision and if your parent give consent to marry under the age of 18 or 16 it cannot be called rape.

Very good christian always…Now here is someone who is speaking and operating on divine law. The family is involved. When a girl is ready for her first marriage whether it’s 12, 14, 16 or 18 or 25 for that matter, HER FATHER IS THE SOLE GUARDIAN OF THE GIRL. He is responsible for protecting her affairs regarding a suitor. He DOESN’T FORCE HER TO MARRY SOMEONE AGAINST HER WILL.

Very good christian always. Even if we may disagree theologically, we can understand certain issues based on similiar knowledge of divine law.

The age of consent is too high, that is clear. I challenge anyone, what is the difference between a 15 year old and a 16 year old? What scientific evidence was used to determine the age of consent at 16? Some countries are 14 like South America, 15, 16, and 17. What is the yardstick?

To have sexual relations with anyone out of marriage is a great crime against Allah whether she is 13 or 33. Now, if a young woman is 13, she has reached the age of puberty, has all the sexual secondary characteristics, how can one say she is not ready for marriage? Who gives man the audacity to interfere with the divine laws of Allah? Allah says she is ready man says she is not? Thus, many of these young girls lie to their parents and are experimenting with sex. What is the difference if a 14 year old young man and a 22 year old young man who had sexual intercourse with a 13 year old girl? What moral basis on divine law or scientific principle the 22 year old would be punished by ‘law?’ There are too many inconsistencies with man made laws.

By Allah, if I have a daughter, she will be raised very different from women in our society. She will be responsible from a tender age thus by the time she reaches puberty for example 12 she is mature and responsible in thought. I’d prefer she is married to a 16 year old brother who is pious, responsible and can provide for her needs. I prefer they live at my home. When my daughter goes out, she is with her HUSBAND. She in the sight of Allah is allowed to enjoy love and intimacy whilst she goes to school. A student has a dignified position, they need to have means to channel their sexual urges; when this outlet is blocked they will resort to masturbation, promiscuity, homosexuality and all the other deviated sexual practices.

Our women are irresponsible in this society because they watch too much dam sponge bob, soap operas and BET! We fail to engage them in realistic affairs such as spirituality, marriage, politics, business ethics, etc.

Muslim ok lets say i agree with you(which i don’t) why does she have to marry a man in his forties or fifties. Your religion believes the the more virgins you sleep with you will enter heaven thats why you guys are allowed to marry more than one wife. that is just sick, most times these young girls are forced into these marriages and with no one to help them submit to this rediculous tradition. that god am from the “western world” where i a FREE to marry who i choose and not because of tradition, parents or religion.

@ dominica abroad: The Holy Quran has categorically stated that a woman cannot marry against her will. She DOES NOT have to marry a man in his forties or fifties.

We are allowed to marry non virgins thus this has nothing to do with polgyny. It is not a ridiculous tradition, it’s how we are raised in the west. We have gone far from divine injunctions and Allah’s will. In Islam a man or woman is free to marry who they please.

    • ?

Are you saying that Abraham, Issac, Ishmael, Jacob and most of the prophets who practiced polygyny were promiscous? If so, why believe in the bible? Do you believe in the bible? What does exodus 21:10 say?

Fornication and players are promiscous people. How comes there are no laws to curb these behaviours? Why are these behaviours promoted in the film industry? They are the ones contributing to the rise in STDs.

Are you saying that a girl of 10 or 12 is psychologically prepared to be a mother? Are you saying that a girl of 10 or 12 should shoulder the responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, child rearing, dealing with temper tantrums, helping with schoolwork, guiding children through their teenage years, grocery shopping, satisfying her husband’s physical needs and all the other responsibilities of a wife and mother? Are you saying she can do all this without even having had the chance to be a child? We don’t ask this of boys, we can’t ask this of girls. This is exploitation. There is more to a girl’s life than being a man’s servant.

      • Muslim_Always
        March 30, 2011

Of course a 10 or 12 year old young lady can be a mother. It’s how she is raised. There are many women doing this in the world. It makes it easier when her parents help as well and that is the beauty of the extended family who are noble and pious.

Nothing is wrong in asking this of young boys of 14 and 15 to be responsible. This is how it should be. If more of our young men at 15 and 16 were responsible for a family there would be a serious decrease in criminal activity. It’s because our parenting methods are poor. The young man is built, his voice is that of a man, he has the sexual secondary characteristics, yet you tell him he is a boy; that’s why many adolescents have an identity crisis. They can’t differentiate between being a boy or a man.

If at 15 and 16 a young man is not ready to marry, why Allah grants him the ability for his penis to erect? Why grant him the ability to have children? To ejaculate sperms? The scientific evidence is overwhelming yet we oppress our young women and men.

People pretend as if sex is a sin. It is not a sin, it was created by Allah and it is wholesome and healthy. It must be channelled in an ethical spiritual environment of marriage. Allow the young couple to sanctify their marriage whilst they are going to school. Why allow our “teenagers” to experiement with sex, tell them use a condom and fornicate or engage in promiscuous behaviour? Isn’t marriage a blessing from the Most High? The same way these youth can ease their sex frustration by promiscous behaviour, why not incorporate ethical principles and marriage? The same way the body yearns for food and water/juice :-D the same way it yearns for sex as well. At times as adults we are horny, how about the youth who are 12-20? Let’s be practical and be open minded.

Muslim just promoting pedophilia that is all
Physically a person may be ready for a task but mentally and emotionally they may not be
WHO ARE YOU Muslim to say that she is in fact ready

        Allah NEVER said she’s ready
We are given the tools to use from birth that however does not mean that they are to be immediately made use of

so if before the woman can talk she is physically ready to make kids you’ll go marry her and give her a few. That kind of talk is rubbish. A child’s psychological nature cannot be mixed with the physical which is why children in their teens experience mood swings and most tend to take on a rebellious nature from parents. This is why the LAW at least in the west, was set up so that Children could be protected from such pedophilia.

        • Muslim_Always
          March 30, 2011

@ T Winston: The psychological nature has to do with how these children are raised in our society. “Adults” experience mood swings as well, does that mean they are still a minor? This is flawed reasoning in my view. This is no evidence to suggest that they are not ready for marriage.

Secondly, I am having an informed discussion; I do not advocate persons to go after young women under the age of 16 in this country. Not at all! I am simply questioning the logic and scientific basis of the law which I am entitled to do.

I ask again T Winston, what is the difference between a 15 and a 16 year old scientifically and psychologically? I do not understand how the age of consent is granted for fornication to a 16 year old however a 15 year old is a “minor.” I just do not get this logic and I am entitled to ask.

I will raise my son to do martial arts from 3 to 4 years or some other active sports; swimming, hunting and so on at 5-10. However, to sit there playing video games? Never!

My son has to learn to open a bank account for himself at the age of 8 and 9 with my supervision at the bank. He has to learn to be accountable and he has to study as well thus there is balance. No gaa gaa goo goo for him. Right now he is a baby and everyone speaks to him like a grown man.

A person who rejects the existence of the creator of the heavens and the earth has denied his own existence. The human dimension comprises of physical, mental and spiritual.

Even the animals are above you because they glorify their Lord evening and morning. Take time to meditate, examine nature around you if you are in Dominica, look at the order of things, go to some quiet place in a mountain, keep your mind still and listen, you will hear your inner voice. When you have attempted these basic exercises come back and tell me there is no creator!

Who created the ability for these women to get pregnant at 10 and 12? Will you blame the creator of the universe? Nothing is wrong with having children at these ages, it’s how it is done, there is no marriage and ethics.

I think that the child must have been older than 5 – based on the storeis- she seems to have been what they call “bush person” – They had their own lil community away from the greater world so she may have been older since it couldn’t be proven that she was really 5!

Lina Medina had a disorder called precocious puberty. You all must read before commenting and educate yourselves.

Extreme degrees of precocious puberty in children under 5 are very uncommon but not unheard of. Pregnancy and delivery by a child this young remains extremely rare because extremely precocious puberty is treated to suppress fertility, preserve growth potential, and reduce the social consequences of full sexual development in childhood. In a minority of children, the early development is triggered by a disease such as a tumor or injury of the brain. Even in instances where there is no disease, unusually early puberty can have adverse effects on social behavior and psychological development, can reduce adult height potential, and may shift some life-long health risks.

i think i read in some article that female babies are born with fertile eggs and the reproductive system matures around the eggs. so that doesn’t make it impossible. i also think dead babies are harvested for stem cells.
