Former Antigua diplomat and UN President indicted for bribery

ASH

Former United Nations General Assembly President John Ashe accepted more than $500,000 in bribes from a Chinese real estate mogul and other businesspeople in exchange for help obtaining lucrative investments and government contracts, according to federal court documents unsealed Tuesday.

In exchange for the money, federal prosecutors say Ashe used his position as Permanent Resident to the United Nations for Antigua and Barbuda and General Assembly head to introduce a U.N. document in support of a real estate project being developed by Chinese billionaire Ng Lap Seng. The scheme unfolded over the course of nearly three years, from 2011 through 2014, and included his tenure as General Assembly head.

HONG KONG — High-level support had been building in the United Nations for a multi-billion dollar Macau convention center project at the heart of a U.S. corruption investigation in the months before the case came to light.

” A meeting in Macau in late August of some 200 delegates from 50 countries, including the prime minister of Dominica and several U.N. ambassadors, ended with an endorsement of the “creation of a permanent South-South Expo [Center] in Macau,” according to the website of the U.N. Office for South-South Cooperation, which organized the event.”

“The cancer of corruption that plagues too many local and state governments infects the United Nations as well,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said. “United in greed, the defendants allegedly formed a corrupt alliance of business and government, converting the UN into a platform for profit.”

Bharara acknowledged most of that money remains unaccounted for, and said that case remains under investigation

As part of the accused scheme, prosecutors said, he was treated to a vacation in an $850-a-night suite in New Orleans and a $30,000 private basketball court in Dobbs Ferry. He spent $59,000 on hand-tailored suits (skerro boy), $54,000 on two Rolexes, $40,000 on BMW payments and $69,000 to join a luxury vacation club.

In that first piece I wrote, I stated there might be a certain Dominican on the FBI Radar DNO did not print it, but one thing Dominicans need to be aware of is sometimes a diplomatic passport does not stop deportation, and jail sentence when they venture out of the UN to commit crimes, political or otherwise.

Nobody is above the law in America, some years ago, the DEA caught a government minister from the Cayman islands red handed in a sting smuggling cocaine, and collecting money from DEA undercover police, he went to here, I suppose his diplomatic passport could not help him!

      Read the following idiot!

“Prosecutors say some of the bribe money was used to pay for Ashe’s family vacation and to construct a basketball court at his home in Dobbs Ferry, New York. He opened two bank accounts to receive the funds and then underreported his income by more than $1.2 million, officials said.”

DNO, I thank you for finally informing the nation, though you did not quite inform your readers. The article is missing the following information:
    1. Mr. LG Lap Seng is a very good friend of Skerrit and Dominica

    2. It is no secret that the day Erika destroyed Dominica, Prime Minister Skerrit was on his way from Macau where he told the nation that he attended a UN function. Here is DNO “my depression was lifted by the thought that the sentiments and agreements made at the Conference in Macau, China” full story herehttps://dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/news/general/pm-skerrit-addresses-the-nation/

    3. He sincerely forgot to tell us who attended the said meeting with him.

    4. It is a fact that the following persons attended the above meeting: NG Lap Seng, John Ashe, Francis Lorenzo and Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit.

    5. PM Skerrit was the only Prime Minister present

    6. So far, we know the first three, that is: NG, John and Francisco have found a new address in US Jail

Thank you. I keep wondering why a media house like DNO is so fearfull of reporting fearlessly. All the DNI reporter has to do is click on the UN site and vois la Skerrit with Ashe ,Lorenzo and Lap Seng. In addition there is genuine court documents proving Skerrit involvement eith Lap Seng. Yet all of this a DNO is afraid to recognize the vitality.
After all we know for sure that every other media house in Dominica with the exception of Q95 is controlled by the labor party government. DNO is supposedly independent. But not only that DNO control the electronic media share and as such DNO should be fearless

    October 6, 2015

Referring to the US and big countries, when they are in high places they have privileges. At that time they are not watched nor suspected. They are sometimes approached and bribed to practice dishonesty. Some fall for it with promises of exorbitant sums of money to get rich and live lavishly.
Money, the almighty dollar, is tempting. This is the work of Satan, his influence, his blatant lies and dishonesty.
Intelligent people could be stupid. With all what they hear and read about, do they not realize that sooner or later they will be caught and their position and reputation will be reduced to naught, down the drain? Imagine they who had influence and prestige will be imprisoned. What good is it?
I would think when they scheme with others, they are not happy. There would be an uncertain degree within them of being caught.
Teach the youths not to envy anyone for who they have become and what they possess. Study, work for what they want by honest means.

At the same time, we must be compassionate and not laugh at what befalls others. Keep in mind Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us to be “perfect and merciful.” We must constantly strive for these godly virtues.
The fallen ones have a wife and family. We must consider them and the situation they have found themselves in, some, through no fault of theirs. They are shocked, ashamed and embarrassed at their fallen family and/or friends. This could also cause insanity.
We should also consider that some can’t bear the embarrassment and commit suicide.
I have confident in God, as taught by my parents who themselves had a lot of confidence in Him. As there is a God above who knows and sees everything, in time we reap what we sow right on earth.
Learned from them in my childhood days: “There but for the grace of God go I.”
We speak our minds and comment but we must have empathy for such people who have become at par, if not less than the poorest person on earth.

And the US Attorney for Manhattan, speaking today at a press conference said “we’re looking at a lot of things and I wouldn’t be surprised if you see other people charged.” This is called the tip of the iceberg. Allegedly the Ambassador had two Rolex watches, spent fifty nine thousands US dollars on two business suits, drove a new BMW and recently spent thirty thousand US dollars to build a new basketball court at his house among other alleged excesses. Allegedly, Mr Ng Lap Seng has a Dominica connection. I hereby submit the movie “Waiting to Exhale” for viewing pleasure till the U.S. Attorney for Manhattan makes another announcement.

At least three of those arrested were present at the South-South Forum at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Macau on 25 August where Roosevelt Skerrit featured as a main speaker. The event was organized by David Ng (Lap Seng)’s Sun Kiang IP group, of which he is chairman. Also present was Dr. John Ashe of Antigua (ex UN diplomat & co-chairman of the same Sun Kian company ) , as well as Francis Lorenzo, the group’s President. All three have been indicted.
At the meeting in Macau our P.M. signed an agreement with mr. David Ng (Lap Seng) for the establishment of a Technology Transfer facility in Dominica.
I truly hope that our P.M. will be found to be in no way associated with any questionable dealings with these people because that would cause untold damage to Dominica, especially at a time when we need the support from international donors.

    • The Real Facts
      October 6, 2015

There is one thing in life, since no one can foresee the future or foretell it, they do not know what lies ahead for them. No one can be confident that they will never find themselves in a situation. Those who lack compassion may themselves be, if not in the same position but another type which will cause them much anxiety, stress and hardship. If not them, it could be a member of their family or some other whom they know. We do not reject such people. This is when they need all the love, consideration and compassion of those whom they know.
In case some do not know, God is constantly testing us to see how we react to those who are in need of our friendship and also help, one way or the other. Those who claim to be Christians should always keep this in mind and practice this godliness.
This is why Our Lord told us, “Do not judge.” While some are judging, God knows their life is not straightened out. Consider what could await such people.

Just yesterday one of the former Governor Generals of Quebec was sent to jail for abuse of office and fraud. I hope we take note in Dominica – for this could never happen in our so called judiciary where only certain people are punished.
