INTERESTING STORY: Hole that swallowed a three-storey building

The 100-feet sinkhole in Guatemala.

THE giant hole in the middle of Guatemala City that swallowed a house and a three-storey building could have been forming for thousands of years.

Sinkholes occur when groundwater percolates through layers of rock in the Earth’s crust, dissolving it and forming a series of underground caves.

Malcolm Cox, a hydrogeologist at the Queensland University of Technology, said that if the caves became bigger and extended up towards the surface they could make the ground unstable and eventually collapse, swallowing the surface soil – and anything on top of it.

    Sister don’t be discouraged.
Remeber God let the earth swallow up the children of Israel when they did not trust him.
But we who believe the He is soon to return will trust in every thing that God has and will do.

@ hmmmmmm. I see no reason why we should rely on DNO for everything. It is virtually impossible for them to be on top of all the issues. You as an individual have to be resourceful. The is BBC, there is CNN and also you can Google various news papers if you want to be informed. I do not believe that you are interested in Jamaica per say, but it’s the fact that you are unable to comment on the issue. I doubt that your contribution would have been on that is constructive, and valid.

My dear, I did research it as i am sure a lot of other persons did…I saw it on every site/channel/forum you mentioned. I was not relying on DNO for information so do not get things twisted. My point was that we should be INTERESTED in what is going on in the region. We do not have to rely on INTERNATIONAL NEWS AGENCIES/ONLINE NEWS SITES to get information on what is happening in the Caribbean because not all of us have the time to look up on all these sites…many people after watching the local news will check on DNO to ‘see what’s going on’… Even if there was no in depth article on the situation in Jamaica, just a mention of it would allow people to take the initiative to do more research on the subject matter… It was so embarrassing to have/read discussions on the situation in jamaica on social sites and people would ask, “What’s happening in Jamaica?”

So don’t get my point wrong…my point is not that we cannot research the story online and take initiative and responsibility …my point is that we must take an interest in what is happening in the rest of the region … we are in/from the region and DNO should have mentioned what is happening in Jamaica even if it was only one line…I don’t own DNO so I cannot force them to do anything… I was merely stating how I feel which is why we have the “comment” section in the first place…

By the way, I am very thankful and Praise God that nobody was killed in this ‘hole’.

I have no problem with DNO featuring this story. What I have a problem with is the fact that last week, so much was going on in JAMAICA and not a single report/article was posted on DNO…so many Dominicans were oblivious to what was happening there…i think that was very poor on the part of DNO…

    Just my two cents…

do some research. sink holes are nothing new. they vary in size and are usually caused by irrigation.

I dont want to laugh at god fearing sister… but…. lol….. Do some research for real sister…. Even the article tells you how sink holes are formed….

No. These are two different phenomena. Miracle lake was formed by a lanslide blocking up the river bed and banks causing the river to back up forming a lake.

If a sink whole had occured layou river would dissappear underground. Dominica’s rock type does not allow for such occurences.

wasn’t this the same phenomenon that initiated the events some years ago which led to the eventual formation of the Matier Dam(Miracle Lake) at Layou?

      No.
