WASHINGTON, CMC – The United States says it will deport Haitians who arrived here after the January 12 catastrophic earthquake that left an estimated 200,000 people dead and more than one million homeless in the Caribbean nation.
“Haitians need to be there (in Haiti) to help rebuild their country,” US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters, adding “this is not an opportunity for migration”.
Last week, Washington announced that it was granting Temporary Protected Status (TSP) to an estimated 100,000 Haitians living illegally in the US before the earthquake struck.
Napolitano said the US granted TPS for Haitians “living and working in our country for the next 18 months.
“Providing a temporary refuge for Haitian nationals whose personal safety would be endangered by returning to Haiti is part of this administration’s continuing effort to support Haiti’s recovery,” she said.
The Obama administration had come under increasing pressure to grant TPS to Haitians here, especially in the wake of the massive earthquake that devastated the French-speaking Caribbean country.
But, while legislators with Caribbean ties here have welcomed the US initiative, one, at least, has gone further in urging the Obama Administration to grant “total amnesty” for the undocumented Haitians.
New York State Assemblyman Nick Perry, who represents the predominantly West Indian 58th Assembly District in Brooklyn, said the 18-month TPS is too short a reprieve for Haitians.
“The best thing America can do for Haitians is to put the Amnesty bill in quick motion,” Perry told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC).
“That would benefit the Haitians here and elevate their status to permanent residence. Haiti is a special case. People [Haitians] who are here have nothing to go back to,” he said.
i agree 100% with the US…if a country has a disaster the ppl should stay and help rebuild…this is not the time to run to another country
If the government’s position is to deport any Haitian that arrives after January 12, 2010, there is only one problem with this approach. Some will be intercepted at sea, but for thousands who make to Florida and disappear, there is no way to determine whether they arrive before Jan 12, 2010 or after that date. It is important to not grant TPS to Haitians, but it is too late now. The President has already granted TPS to them. Just one mistake after another for the last 40 years.
America will become a Third World country, with millions of people with little or no education making demands on the social system of America. America is already collapsing financially and the living standard of millions of Americans is dropping like a rock. Adding millions of people from Third World countries is only going to compound the problems.
A major concept of decision making involves thought and deliberation, before a decision is made. While every country has a right to protect its own interest, Dominica is under populated. This is an opportune time to increase the population by a few thousand people. We have the land to do it. Dominicans love to migrate to other countries, but no one must migrate to theirs. We should welcome at least 5000 Haitians to our shores. Are we our brother’s keepers or not?
Sadly, most of the people who are commenting do not know the history of Haiti and how this land was systemically destroyed by both Europe and United States over time.
France forced Haiti to pay her restitution over several decades because Haiti was the first free nation in the Western Hemisphere to reject slavery. This policy significantly and systemically destroyed Haiti’s economy for many decades. Let’s get the facts straight before we jump on the bandwagon of the ignorant.
Just as we had a set of Mahaut People migrated in Guadelope and Antigua after Hurricane David… to this day, they never pass back. They should send them back to rebuild their country.
What about the 200,000 illegal Haitians who were here before the earthquake?
Why aren’t we getting them returned as well?
And why does Haiti need the return of those who illegally “immigrated” here any more than Mexico needs the return of its illegals now residing here.
Just imagine what improvement those 12 million or more Mexicans could make in Mexico!
What are you talking about ..we can’t afford to keep them here, we owe 15 trillion dollars now because we have been suckling the whole world, millions of our citizens are not working and without money. I live in Florida USA and they just delivered our first order of 45,000 uneducated, unskilled and American aid dependent Haitians with more to come. We are up to our necks in Haitians here in Florida..we got Haitian Voodoo gangs slashing and killing in Miami and now they bring them to Northern part of the state. We are getting sick of this..nobody ask us if we wanted a small city of Haitians dropped on top of us!
To all you Dominicans who criticized Mr Savarin’ s statement concerning Haitian nationals residing in Dominica what have you to say now that you’ ve read this statment ? Gelle zor fermer ? Please comment on the u.s. position. I am looking for your comments.
Millions and millions of Mexicans have illegally entered the U.S. and have destroyed every
city they have entered with their gangs, crime, graffiti, and babies.
They have babies to collect welfare and have bankrupted California.
You think we want anyone else in the U.S.?
NO THANKS!
please i beg, don”t let anymore come to Dominica, when they get to dominica after some weeks they live and come to guadeloupe from back door! we dominican that are staying in guadeloupe are really geting had time because of all the haitians that are pasting from dominica to gwada! it”s time the PM do something about that!
Aren’t the Mexicans and all other Illegal Aliens already here needed back in their own countries too!???
Over in Italy, the Italian citizens – and I’m talking about the NATIVE, ethnic Italians – have decided that they have had just about enough of their ruling elite rats importing millions of these Third World aliens into their native homelands and then turning them loose on the native populations. Those Italians are showing the rest of the Western World that our elites are not going to stop this and that their objective is to bury Western people under massive third world, hostile, and incompatible aliens. They are taking matters into their own hands and running these aliens OUT of their towns and communities.
The solution, of course, requires the arrest, trials and convictions of every last one of those treasonous ruling elites who are clearly guilty of being involved in an organized conspiracy to commit genocide, as defined by the 1947/1948 Convention on Genocide, against the native peoples of their respective nations.
Oh, for those who might not be aware – that same convention codified into International Law the prescribed punishment for Genocide. Article 4 states: “Persons committing genocide or any of the other acts enumerated in Article 3 shall be punished, whether they are constitutionally responsible rulers, public officials, or private individuals.”
The punishment for this crime? Why, its Death. Capital punishment.
To all the people who were cretics to Mr. sarvin when he spoke on giving the Haitian temporary stay in Dominica for 6 month with no hassel, i hope they are now putting their foot in their mouth, every country have to protect its own, disaster or not he made a fair and wise decission.
those that are in dominica , the government can have mercy on them, but don’t bring more in that’s enough.
You see america telling haitians to stay in haiti and rebuild their country but Dominicans want to bring them here. The people who can afford to keep them want them to stay where they are but dominicans want them to come to dominica. Weeeeee Papaaaaaaaaaaaaa
