Chinese investment team arrives in Dominica

flagsA high level investment team from the People’s Republic of China has arrived in Dominica. The team is on island to advance discussions on selected capital projects and possible investment opportunities in Dominica.

While on island the thirteen member delegation will be pay courtesy calls on President of Dominica His Excellency Charles A Savarin; Prime Minister of Dominica the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit; and other members of Cabinet.

The team will also visit the proposed site for the international airport, the Geothermal Project site, and tour the town of Portsmouth. The team will also view presentations on investment opportunities in Dominica.

The Dominica Labour Party Government has renewed efforts at attracting more Direct Foreign Investment to propel private sector development and job creation; and to enhance effectiveness in managing public resources.

    China again?

This is China with all its human rights violations.

They were so bright they embraced Communism.

They are famous for falling victim to the opium trade themselves and then exporting it to the world.

This is China where they used to bind up the feet of the little girls so they would stay small because the old men thought small feet on girls were sexy. Christian missionaries did much to bring an end to this evil in China.

China where they have no freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, or freedom of religion.

In Canada a “Made in China” label brings a chuckle. But money hungry wholesalers continue to buy from China in spite of the fact that some of the goods are dangerous and even food items have been found unsafe. Plato said “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low prices has worn off.”

    Not to be trusted!

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

To all the nay say-ers on this site. just bear in mind that American does not invest in small Islands like Dominica or any other small Island in the Caribbean, They invest in Pakistan, India, Israel and other countries where they seek influence and power.
Congress in the US would never approve an investment package for a stadium or any other like we get from the Chinese/The Chinese however seek our assistance in the UN and will help where necessary, It is up to us Dominicans instead of criticizing the investments, compliment these investments with support projects , become enterpreneurs, stop criticizing and help yourselves.

The US Government instead provides things like medical assistance, disaster relief wharehouses, national security assets. I hope the next time you get sick the grounds keeper at the stadium can take care of you.

  9. members of the team
    May 9, 2015

DNO did you refer to them as A high level investment team? Thirteen member delegation team? Boy it sounds like the 13 member west Indies team that travelled to Barbados last week. I guess 6 batters, 4 bowlers, 2 all rounders and one wicketkeeper? So they will meet other team mates in Dominica and together they will play to defeat Dominica? They more look like a team that came to take possession of their PROMISED property.

It is so ignorant of our people to just say hooray ” Chinese coming “and not ask what is it the Chinese are getting in return. What is the agreement between our country and China? Do we have to give them land, duty free, passports, cabrits , emerald pool …. ? My people if the Chinese give us 10 million and take back 15 million we have not gained anything. A re there any other investors out there than the Chinese? There is nothing special about the Chinese coming here since they are all over the world doing this. We would like to see this government put mechanisms in place to attract a diverse set of investors and increase production, manufacturing, tourism, agriculture, employment, GDP, minimum wage……

I guess The Facts and a Doubting Thomas will find someway of disagreeing with this and their argument night be “well it happening in other countries”

I remember in the 70’s I use to hear Siffleur Montagne Chorale sing a song about “pa kete yow pwen domnique hud nou” and I never realized it was prophetic song. Now this song is sure a reality as we sat there let them take Dominica from us. Dominica is gone from us! It was on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013, DNO:” PM Skerrit inks US$300-million deal with China.” You remember? The on Saturday, December 7th, 2013 at 8:47, The Chinese Embassy here said that the widely-reported US$300 million MOU, was not with the Government of China. On December 5th, 2013DNO: “On Wednesday the prime minister revealed that experts from a Chinese firm are in Dominica to visit the proposed construction site of the facility, in Compton Point near Calibishie, and to offer advice to the government.” Wednesday, June 4th, 2014 DNO:“We made good progress there (China)… very soon we will make public a document and contents of that document which we have been able to sign.” Team arrives today to visit? Or to…

Investment means they spend money to create a business that will more than pay back what they spent. That means that they want to suck money money OUT of Dominica – making the Island and it’s people poorer. Why do so few people understand this.

Every country has rules and regulations. This should not hamper Dominica and make it finish as you stated. Consider additional jobs may be created. There are prospects for investing in Dominica. Give them a break. Be positive. Need I inform you, less criticism and more prayers? :)

America does not invest in the Caribbean. Only thing they give is for drug enforcement and border control which in itself is not bad if they were not doing so with an entirely selfish agenda. America gives nothing. When was the last time you heard of a full scholarship from the US?

    • Affa
      May 9, 2015

Dream on! America, over the years have only invested where it’s strategically important to do so. American businesses would have been investing in Dominica years ago. They only invest in countries where they pay very little, starvation wages, China, Malasia, pennies on the dollar.
Not with the hugh cost of electricity will they invest in Dominica. China will soon be investing $29 billion in Columbia. China has the means to do so, America has proved over the years they do not invest in D’a, only humanitarian aid and gestures. Deal with it.

Whilst I agree with every effort to get foreign investment to the island, I do not understand why all that foreign investment has to come from only one source, namely China. Ever heard of the saying: do not put all your eggs in one basket. Having said that some might argue that we should take what we can get in particular in times we are in right now. Ok fair play, but there are other investors around but it takes perhaps a little more effort to get them on board, a bit more effort that Skerrit is not willing to put in or perhaps for reasons only known to him does not want to put in. In simple terms, I for one, do not want these Chinese to take over the island. I deeply mistrust them and their motivations to the same extent as I mistrust Skerrit. We need to keep our eyes and ears open!

      More Jobs Yah?
      Just for argument…
What long term jobs have they previously created for the past 15 years.
      In Stores?
      High way?
      Stadium?
      College?
Now compare that to the number of local stores which has closed down and the number of people who lost their jobs because of their presence. Now Plz don’t tell me we got these building free. One way or the other we have to pay them back. Tax exempt, Land, Duty free, passports etc.
That being said we need to renegotiate our terms in other for us to benefit more as a people. All our moneys are being exported back to China at present.

      • May 16, 2015

China is a Communist nation and it should be no secret they have an interest in the Caribbean.

Whether it is loaning money or making a donation if it was not in China’s best interest they would not be doing it.

They have the people, military might, and resources to move in and exploit the potential of a small and underdeveloped nation. Three thousand years ago King Solomon wrote in The Proverbs “The borrower is servant to the lender.” If China can obligate a nation that is already disadvantaged financially they can gradually take control of it without firing a shot.

China lost its religious freedom to the Communists. I have heard that the Communist government is appointing the Catholic Bishops in China against the wishes of the Vatican and of course contrary to Canon Law.

My prayer is that the (finished work of) the CROSS will protect Dominica and the Gospel of Jesus Christ will prevail throughout the land.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill, D.D., International…
