Dominica loses vote at UN

UN General Assemby
UN General Assemby

Dominica is among two Caribbean countries which are in arrears in the payments of their dues to the UN and have lost their right to vote at the General Assembly.

Dominica is in arrears of US$19,734, according to a letter from the UN General Secretary, Ban Ki-Moon.

Because of that the island has lost its right to vote in the General Assembly as of February 24, 2014.

In his letter Ban said under Article 19 of the Charter of the United Nations, “A Member of the United Nations which is in arrears in the payment of its financial contributions to the Organization shall have no vote in the General Assembly if the amount of its arrears equals or exceeds the amount of the contributions due from it for the preceding two full years.”

An exception is allowed if the Member State can show that conditions beyond its control contributed to this inability to pay, according to the UN general secretary.

The other Caribbean country which joined Dominica in losing it right to vote at the UN is Grenada.

Other countries worldwide include Central African Republic, Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe and Somalia.

Last year Dominica suffered the same problem at the UN but the bill was eventually settled.

How can DLP still be paying Loreen a Dominican salary when she is in the U.S , working and getting another salary? This is pure madness.

I wonder what King Mohammed VI of Morocco wlil think of Roosevelt Skerrit now, after he rewarding him so handsomely for our support at the U.N. against Polisario and the people of Western Sahara. The man forfeited his vote for a few lousy dollars. What kind of friend is that?

Welcome to the real world!!! I don’t belong to any of the political parties. I am therefore totally neutral. So we are in debt- are we the only ones? – NO!! Was the last bill paid? – YES!! Fellow Dominicans we’re not the only ones in debt. Countries and Islands all over the world are struggling. In Europe Greece came to the EU for help because they were broke. Ireland also went to the EU for help!! The US hD the most terrible time. Taking all this into consideration I think we ‘re no doing too badly at all. I am very proud on my beautiful Dominica. Well done to our Government. I truly believe that there are far more positives than negatives. God bless DOMINICA !!

@Cyrique : when you say that you are neutral what do you mean? I know the crab we call “Cyrique is yellow/ brown in color. Do you have a neutral color? I think we Dominicans always believe that last or close to being last is okay. Here is an example: In football a team would beat Dominica 11-2 and to us we did okay simply because this team defeated another country 11-4. Now how on earth can one say that having not pay our dues on time last year we did not learn and this year is no exception. We can pay consultants 8,000 per month, pay loreen- Bannis working outside Dominica, build a 27 million waste of time house yet we are unable to pay our dues?????? You say that you are neutral? Stop playing politics!!!!! Dominica is at its crossroads- time for change!!!!!

    • Lamp!!!
      March 27, 2014

@ Cyrique: You call yourself Neutral? We can pay people 8,000 per month, paying Loreen-Bannis not for working in Dominica but trying to get votes , building a 27 million dollars waste a time palace which cannot bring in not a cent. You say you neutral ? Stop fooling yourself and stop playing politics. it is just time for a change!!!!

Vince Henderson is the UN ambasador up in New York. How many meetings has he attended? Records show that he only went to 2 for last year and none so far this year. So there is no interet by DLP and its representatives to show face in the UN.
We as a small nation cannot develop without international cooperation. But again I wonder if the small minds in DLP even understand how the world economy works.
This is why we should choose the well rounded “Team Dominica” come next election.

Manizoo, believe it or not the only big nations who want Dominica, on their side is none other than China, and perhaps Japan, and the reason China want Dominica on their is because of China’s planed annexation of Taiwan, whereas we through our government constantly join forces in fighting a loosing battle, no wonder we are so heavenly associated with China.

To La Voix I say there are many theologians who have said many times that the United Nations is a demonic organization runs by the forces of evil, the devil is behind all evil, I do not know where Warrington got that information, but for the first time he might correct.

Now the theologians including the late Herbert W. Armstrong, and, the late J Vernon Magee, based their argument on a Biblical Prophecy, which I believe. The number of nations plus you mentioned might be involved in something demonic, and not even knowing it.

Jamaicans, have a saying which goes like this: “him is wan dead man, an him doe even know it.” So, take it from me Dominica is a member of something demonic, run by the devil, and many of us “doh know it!”

And let me give you an example of the devils work within the United Nations. George Bush Jr., invaded Iraq with the blessings of the United Nations, claiming Saddam had weapons of mass destruction getting ready to annihilate the rest of the world, the United States went in and killed thousands of Iraqis, as well as many Americans; in the final analysts the world found out there were no weapon of mass destruction in Iraq to this day.

That is the work of the devil, not one member abstain with the exception of Russia and the reason they abstain is because Saddam bought arms and ammunition from Russia in those days.

    Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

    • La voix
      March 27, 2014

Mr Francisco your argument is based on generalizations which is devoid of theological substance. The Umited Nations was established to prevent world wars and there has been no world war to date and that is a blessing because after the Second World War there was great loss of life in Europe. Like every organizations there will be the dominant players because of their contributions may have a bigger say in world events but that does not make the entire organisation an instrument of the devil, I cannot agree with your views on this subject because you are sitting on the fence and preaching something that is untrue.

For goodness sake make available a monthly cash flow projection so Finance can prioritize its spending. Government should not be in the business of giving toilets and water to lazy people. Just now Government will make a grand announcement about giving soap and toilet paper and UWI will make our students not sit their exams. So what happen to all the monies that was raised on the treasury bills at such low rates? Dominica is something else. 37. La voix
    March 26, 2014

The issue here is that we do not separate domestic or local politics with international politics and we need to understand the difference so that we can differentiate between the two.
The international community does not need to know a persons name what they need to know is what that person is doing to advance the programme or agenda of the decisions that they make. Now with all due respect to our leaders because of the size and resources of the country we may not be able to afford the contingent of staff required to make a meaningful contribution, one person cannot do it alone and with the involvement of others there may be a downside to that so we must build strategic alliances with countries who will show consideration to our situation and assist which will give them some benefit in return. International relations is not about person but interests and where interest converge then there will be support.

  38. March 26, 2014

I’m not surprised, because a man who gives away the tax payers money out of his office to his to his party supporters (the red clinic) rather than let the existing appropriate ministry handle helping the unfortunate among us,and talks about what would you do if 8:30 at night you get a phone call from some bogus mother, and without checking the facts of the matter hurries and gives away tax payers money makes him incompetent.

Warrington, boy right now I “doh” know about you; sometimes I believe you are one of those people singing for your supper; however, reading your latest comments here, I have my doubts. Now you left me wondering if there are some similarities to somebody I know.

I wonder if you are a party crone, or an want to be equalizer, trying to be balanced; it is true and I agree with you that the United Nations, is demonic, and is a satanic organization, the devil is actually in total control, the first time I heard someone said so was way back in the 1970’s when I heard a preacher; the late Herbert Armstrong said so.

Now I do not believe that the islands of the Caribbean, and any of the poor nations in any part of the world should participate in an organization such as the United Nations the money we spend in membership dues could be spent in Dominica where it could serve a better purpose.

If you add up all the money our government spends to pay fees, and keep Henderson in New York, we will find the total amount cold have covered a considerable amount in the cost of building an International Airport.

I do not believe our vote in the general assemble is all that significant, considering there are many issues Henderson cannot vote on. In any event Dominica, has no actual say in world affairs, we are in the United Nation, only as a token!

So too is Grenada, and the rest.

FET every man is entitled to an opinion and I respect yours but since we agree to disagree let me say that as silly as it seems the only reason that the big wigs have shown interest towards small nations like ours s because of that one vote. So to a considerable extent our resence at the UN is significant for. We find our selves swiming in the big pool and when crumbs fall from mouth of the big fish we will eat just like we ave done for years. However that crumb escape the mouth of the sharks we will ake it,

Dominica receives more from the UN than the pittance paid in dues. UN agencies like the World Health Organization, (WHO), Food and Agricultural Organization, (FAO), and UNESCO, have made significant contributions to our economic development.

The country should not allow that to happen because the amount is not significant and more so we must take our obligations to the international community seriously. Building relations with states is as important as domestic policies therefore we should not only look at paying dues but making the best use of diplomacy to advance our cause. If we are to benefit from advantages of international relations we must take out party politics and build on national interest, that what we must do, stop favoring one country policy and see how we can benefit from all countries with what they have to offer, that is the axis on which we should build our foreign relations.

To benefit from multi lateral organisation we must have the structure in place to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that exists, if we depend on one person to do everything then we will be missing out on the vast opportunities that could be embraced to achieve growth. Let’s look at the opportunities and not the pitfalls.

Oh oh I see that Charlie Jong is a priced possession so Mr Ban Kimoon may we offer you a Thieflomatic Pasport or do want a spot on the next Dominica Winter Olympic team. Just say the word and our bills at the UN shall be paid.
Mr Ban Kimoon you want furniture cause we have a furniture maker who need money to get his house back from the bank.
Mr Ban Kimoon do you know that the reason why we can’t pay the bill is because we are following the UN request ; Pit toilet for vote?
Mr Ban Kimoon ous ye la do you know that we are spending the tax payer money to keep poverty and mendicancy alive an d blooming thru the Red Clinic system.

    March 26, 2014

Again!!! Rubbish that! we were not going to vote anyway, they will tell us that`s no big deal but hasten to pay to avoid damage control. If a tenants so frequently does not pay rent and do so only when ask or call out to pay and eventually pays, that would leave any Landlord uneasy and seek to send that tenant packing at the earliest. Again everything is upside down and things are inside out. We can ask China to borrow us the money to pay our dues and add that to our debt.

Go on Dominicans, act surprised. Where do you expect to reach when you let a 5 year old drive a pick up truck?

    • Bogoroy
      March 26, 2014

Lol! What would you say then about desiring a 0.5 year old to drive that same truck?

        March 26, 2014

My first interpretation was that you were turning this analogy on the UWP.

But then I realised that would mean you were calling a team comprised of multiple lawyers, trained economists, businessmen, and motivational speakers the ‘0.5 year olds’ and that would mean you were calling a one man show headed by a man with a bachelors degree in psychology the ‘5 year old.’ A man who has lost the support of his own ineffective puppets and who has conversely lost so much faith in them that he intended on firing them all.

Ill tell you this, I don’t know you, and as such it would be terrible of me to insult you by assuming this is what you meant. In fact, if you’re intelligent enough to use a computer then this could NEVER be what you meant. I hope you continue to be blessed with the powers of understanding and critical analysis sir. See you at the ballots.

A “team”, you say? The biggest indicator of how much a team it is is seen in the current rift between the team members who have quietly sidelined the team leader and those who are left to fend for themselves. If you want details, just ask.

Also, for all its academic firepower that “team” cannot put together a SENSIBLE plan of action that can move Dominicans away from the DLP in numbers that will help it regain office. Doesn’t this tell you something about that “team” led by a man who does not even qualify to enrol at the State College? Is THIS the team that you want me to vote into office?

You have another thing coming, at the ballot!!

What a small amount to lose the right to vote over. That’s a real shame. US$19,734? I bet the government could have found some way to come up with that amount.

It happened last year and again this year. This another avoidable embarrassment on the international scene. After all, its not a huge sum of money, nor is it unexpected. We can do a lot better than that!

Hmm, interesting, but life goes on. Let me introduce a radical thought here: Let’s do a cost-benefit analysis of UN membership. Do we even need to be there? What have we contributed? What does it cost us? What are the benefits to us? What will we lose if we just leave?

    Just aksing.

when you don’t understand something, do like me, pull Google and ask it all the questions – educate yourself them some back and comment on the subject. Don’t ever in your life again comment on things you don’t understand – its ok to not know things and go and educate yourself but its wrong to not know something and refuse to educate yourself then make stupid statements!

For start we would not get the fertilizer from Morocco. You see, it is our vote other members of the U.N. want, to support unpopular claims such as Serbia for Kosovo and Morocco for the Western Sahara. We do not look at ideals at the U.N. but trade our vote for hard cash & other benefits just like prostitute really. Don’t be surprised if we expect another country to pay our fees.

what we would loose is the hand outs from china cuba venezuela and others because the chien mawa leash would be lost which means Dominica would then be indepenant this way Skeritt would not be bound to use prases like ”I WILL WORK TO UNITE CHINA AND TIAWAN .remove the embargo on cuba . He would then use his time to put an embargo on the drugs coming into the country causing all the crimes
