The Government of Dominica has reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with the government of Russia.
And according to Ambassador of the Russian Federation His Excellency Vladimir Polenov, he hopes that the friendly relations between the two countries will help in solving many problems of the modern world.
He made that statement while addressing a ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel on Thursday evening, where he also hosted a special reception, to commemorate 20 years of relations between the two nations.
He said during the two decades of mutual understanding “will encourage us to join participation by solving many problems of the modern world based on justice, equity and future respect.”
Foreign Affairs Minister, Francine Baron, stated that by commemorating the 20th year of relations both countries will explore ways to deepen their relationship.
“In commemorating the 20th year of Dominica-Russia relations, we will be inspired to examine new ways to deepen the relationship between our two nations and explore more creative ways to forge ahead with functional cooperation in the fields such as science, engineering, investment and people-to-people exchanges,” Baron stated.
She continued, “We also reaffirm Dominica’s commitment to continue collaborating with the Russian Federation, particularly to develop initiatives related to the common aspirations of our peoples.”
According to her the desire to deepen the friendship and cooperation between Dominica and Russia was echoed by the Foreign Minister of Russia, who she quotes as saying, “I am convinced that thanks to our common work ties between Russia and Dominica, we will also further strengthen within the bilateral as well as the multi-lateral formats in favour of the peoples of our friendly countries in the interest of ensuring peace and international security.”
Baron revealed that in discussions with Polenov on Thursday morning, “it was made clear that Russia, like us values, the relationship between the two countries and indeed its relationship with the Caribbean region and is interested in pursuing deeper cooperation and engagements.”
Dominica established diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation on May 19, 1995 and was the first western country to recognize Russian Sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Let’s not be fooled here. Russia’s relationship with the Dominica or any other islands in the Caribbean is just a ploy in the bigger game of world domination. There is no benefit for Russia in a relationship btw them and us except to show US that they have friends in their backyard. Russia is the last country to tell people about justice and equity cause corruption and political suppression runs up to the highest office in Russia. Because of the fragility of our institutions and the lack of development of black people in the region we are constantly being used as bargaining chips. We were used actively by France and England in the 1700’s now the same is happening today. Think Cuban missile crisis, Grenada, our creol and English background, Chavez alba. It’s all the same crap. As long as we remain dependent, illiterate, lazy, ignorant, superstitious, lacking in pride, and in a constant state of feeling inferior to others we will continue down this road. “Both countries will explore ways to deepen their relationship”. I take it from this that Dominica does not support the E.U. in its sanctions against Russia. If that is our choice, so be it but we should be prepared to accept the consequences. I particularly warn against any temptation to get involved in facilitating the transfer of funds to those institutions and individuals, who are on the blacklist.

Joe, 1995 was twenty years ago and Boris Yeltsin was President then, supported by the Democratic Russia Movement. The Ukraine was still one republic and the Crimea not annexed by Putin. The ground work for a break up the soviet union had been laid already by Gorbachov with his Glasnost policy, bringing hope and leading to the fall of the Berlin wall. Things have changed since then and not necessarily for the better.
