Leona, newcomers, look with confidence to calypso semi finals

Leona 2Calypsonian, Leona, has one goal in mind: making it to the the 2014 Calypso finals.

The calypsonian, whose real name is Leona Peters, is the only woman in the race to the finals. She has taken her two-year old foray into the calypso the arena one step further by making it to the 2014 semi finals.

Speaking to Dominica News Online, she said that she was not surprised when she learned that she had moved on to the next round after competing in the Quarter Finals held on February 1.

“I am pretty happy about it, but I know that being the only woman that means I have to try twice as hard because it is a big man show as they say,” she said. “So I’m looking forward to the challenge and trying my best to make it to the finals.”

Leona has been making waves this year with her song ‘Baby Machine’ and said she is working hard to achieve her goal of making it to the finals.

The song was written by Pat Aaron.

“I look forward to trying my best to make it past the semi finals,” the calypsonian, who participated in the elimemation last year but was unsuccessful, said. “I am confident but I do not want to be too overconfident but I will be trying my best and I wouldn’t want to disappoint my fans. So expect good things.”

"China man" Jay Dee at the quarter finals

Jude “Jay Dee” Delauney is one of  two newcomers who have claimed their spot in the semi finals. He is known for his song, “China man.”

“It feels great … first time in the business and making such an impact I feel good,” he told DNO.

Jay Dee noted that he is not surprised at this achievement since his song is a good one and a large number of people love his rendition.

He wrote the song himself.

“I think I have a good chance to move on,” he said. “The competition is tight and I think it has a lot of good songs and good performers but I think I have a good chance. Once I present the song properly I think I’ll be in. Winning is another thing. You have to have two good songs to be able to compete and most of the artistes so far released one song so I can’t really judge based on other people but I have two good songs.”

John "Wave" Bruno performed "with confidence" at the Quarters

The other newcomer, John “The Wave” Bruno, revealed that he is striving to be on the levels of King Dice and other great calypsonians.

“It is very exciting to be moving on to the finals as a newcomer,” he said. “I am really looking forward to it. I feel that I have a lot of support … my fan base is building … a lot of people have expressed that they are going to be coming to the show especially to support me and I feel very good about that.”

The Wave will be performing “I must speak” also written by Pat Aaron and according to him, he feels his chance of moving on to the finals is excellent.

“I feel my chances are excellent,” he stated. “I think the other songs are excellent also because all the twenty songs picked are very very good but I believe that my song has a different kind of mix to it in terms of the melody and so I think it is special.”

He noted further that he was not surprised when chosen to move on to the semi finals since his song is well written and he delivered it well on the night of the quarter finals.

The calypso semi finals will be held on February 15th at the Newtown Savannah.

My brother John I heard you singing a calypso ( copy copy copy Cuba , Copy copy copy Venezuela ….)last year which I presumed you wrote and though it was not lyrically strong but I realized that you are a natural and I thought Pat or somebody should engage your talent.
