Letter to the editor – Crisis at Dominica State College

Imagine an unsuspecting second year student of the State College, being held from the back with a knife at his throat, by a masked thug from Yampiece, right in the college’s bathroom ON CAMPUS, at eleven in the morning.   This is exactly what happened on Monday July 2nd 2018, to a male student in a somewhat secluded area of the State College that is enclosed by bushes leading to the Yampiece area.   What if it was a girl?

This boy fought to prevent the perpetrator from stabbing and robbing him.   Upon fleeing for his life, his gold chain worth over $1000.00 USD with a pendant worth almost $400.00 EC was snatched from him.   Thank God he is alive, someone else may not be as lucky.

Parents you need to know what is going on at the State College.   These stories are not taken seriously enough and many are unaware of those happenings.   Things need to be put in place to ensure the safety of our children.   Whilst there may be one or two security guards, this cannot be enough to man that large compound.   This particular area needs a 24/7 security guard, in the absence of a fence that is long awaited.

Are we waiting on some fatal tragedy to occur, for us to act?   The college has to do better than that!   The repeated robbing of students on campus cannot, and should not be treated “hush, hush”.   The onus is on the authority of the State College to put in the necessary mechanisms in place.   We pay an insurance fee.   What is it for?   Why isn’t it used to provide security?

Please stop being cheap, and use some of the exorbitant fees that we pay to provide security for our students.

Mrs. Lynn C Registe

This is just an example of the lawlessness happening all over DA. People are going to have to be aware, not travel alone and be ready to defend themselves from the perpetrators because the police aren’t going to be around to help them. Security guards won’t be able to help much either as they are not armed.

….Kid, you didn’t even mention that although the mugger was masked, the author of the article identified him as being from Yampiece. Those advanced CSI courses at DSC must be really paying off.

Students need to speak out and demonstrate for their rights to be protected on Campus.

    This is totally unacceptable!!!!!!

All educational institutions should make security and safety of their wards top priority. Children and young adults are very vulnerable to the predatory instincts of criminal elements in our society. The criminals see children as easy preys. The administration of the named institution, as soon as humanly possible, should put measures in place to greatly enhance the security and safety of both students and staff. Security is too lax in too many places ( at educational facilities, business places, dimly lit public areas, medical institutions, known hotspots, etc.). We have to do much better before lives are lost.

All educational institutions? What about the rest of the society? Don’t they deserve to be safe?
I do not disagree with you, and I have made the point before, safety is not part of our vocabulary in Dominica. When I visit I see unsafe practices and conditions ALL the time and nobody seem concerned about the unsafe conditions or practices.

If we took safety seriously as a society, all these things would fall into place.

I’m in complete agreement with every word you have written. I also mentioned other facilities and public places where security needs to be beefed up. We take security, safety and maintenance much too lightly. Look at workers on the construction sites, the garbage collectors, mold infested buildings, indiscriminate dumping of hazardous materials, health and safety hazards abound. We need a very conspicuous presence of lawmen and security guards at our schools, colleges, places of business, etc. Abandoned buildings should be demolished, overgrown vegetation on popular pathways should be cut, and owners of empty lots, which are overgrown with tall grass and bushes, should be fined heavily. My take.

I totally condemn this!!!! However I guess that there is a student body at the college! Why are they not publicly vocal about this, and publicly express their disgust, disapproval and disappointment that the security architecture of the college is so inadequate? These are young adults and young adults, what are they afraid of!!!!!

They may be afraid of the repercussions of speaking out publicly. Perhaps professors/administration might take a different view of them and it might affect them academically. I don’t think it is right at all, but I understand their trepidation.

Nonsense! Around the globe, college students are the ones that march, organize and help influence change. Ours alone that fraid “repercussions”?? I don’t agree with what happened but our young people are passive about everything including their safety. How they expect to become tomorrow’s leaders?

” Things need to be put in place to ensure the safety of our children.” Maybe parents should start by not send their children to SCHOOL with EC$3,000 plus jewellery around their necks in plain sight. You create a target and cry when it’s aimed at? I’m not trying to ‘downplay’ the horrific ordeal, I no doubt, the young man went through, or the importance of campus security, but we have to take some personal responsibility.

First of all, the cost of the item shouldn’t be your concern, the person made mention of what it costed, simple as that, you don’t know if it was a gift or whatever, the fact remains, a child or a person ON A WHOLE whether with jewelery or not is a target, you are trying to downplay the horrific ordeal, from what was heard prior to this article this boys chain wasn’t even in eyes sight so! please be real and stick to the topic of the childs safety, what if the guy raped a girl instead of holding a boy at knife point, would she have been advertising her personal goods?

    • July 6, 2018

“…then she shouldn’t have dressed like that.”

Sorry, no. Criminals, not victims, are responsible for crime.

Sure, go ahead and blame the victim. Your statement couldn’t be any more ignorant. It’s because of people like you that victims are afraid to come forward.

BMB, I was thinking of the same way u think, why a student should go to school with such jewelry?

Firstly I am stunned to hear that this is the state of play in Dominica right now. However this lack of general care of the environment and of people is also here in London England. Its becoming a world crisis where those with responsibility and power are not expending concern for the majority. However I am also shocked, as mentioned above, that a student would be at school with such valuable jewelry on, if that was the case. What’s that all about???

Forgive me for being so brash. What comes to mind is that we have a government who has just recently paid all college students fees, clearly for political expedience while this dude in your article had the value of his entire college tuition on his person
What you have mentioned here could have easily been avoided with additional or more strategic security on site.

The boy fought to prevent the perpetrator from stabbing and robbing him that’s what you said but in the same breath you are saying a gold chain worth over $1000.00 US and a pendant worth almost $400.00 EC was snatched away from him. Your story don’t make sense. Parents should be aware of how their children attend the college. Why a student should be going to college with such an expensive chain around his neck? Doesn’t that call for attention?
Mrs. L C R, as far as I see, you are trying something and trying to accuse the government of something you parents should avoid.
You also said that took place in the college’s BATHROOM on campus yet you are still saying that took place in a secluded area of the state college that is enclosed by bushes. So the state college bathroom is in the bushes?
Why do you people take so much pride in degrading your very own? There are so much lies in your story . You are just one of the HATERS of Skerrit and the Government. Stop your FAKE NEWS!
