Lennox Linton has been re-elected political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) and Joshua Francis is now the new deputy.

Both men were elected unopposed at the party’s 27th delegates conference which was held in Salisbury on Sunday, March 1, 2015.

Former deputy political leader, Claudius Sanford, who unsuccessfully contested the Kalinago Territory constituency for the 3rd consecutive time, in the last general election, did not make himself available for re-election.

In what was described as a “tight contest ” for the post of President of the party, Ronald Charles narrowly defeated Roseau Central MP, Joseph Isaac, 94 votes to 90. 186 delegates  voted and the were 3 spoilt ballots. Former UWP president, Ezekiel Basil did not contest the election while former opposition leader and Salisbury MP, Hector John was voted unopposed as vice president.

The party’s general secretary is Diane Victor with Andrea Kentish as her assistant secretary. Treasurer is Alex Birmingham with Jefferson James as assistant treasurer, Nicholas George PRO and Dr. Thomson Fontaine as International Secretary.

The trustees are Ronald Green, Edison James and  Norris Prevost.

Speaking after the election, the new party president, Ronald Charles, thanked all who voted for him and called on those who lost to work for the development of the party.

Party leader  Linton and his new deputy Joshua Francis also addressed the delegates.

More details will follow.

“When you do not get that kind of satisfaction, you and others of your ilk manufacture all mannner of evil against Dominica. You suggested that Skerrit spent I=upwards of thirty million dollars in the last election” (Observer).

Observer, I am too bloody smart, too highly educated to indulged in any form of the innuendoes which you suggest! To people like you Skerrit can do no wrong; I once supported and defended him to that extent too; until I found out for myself the true nature of the beast!

If as you say I am looking for satisfaction, We now have every reason to take the Labor Party, and Athenia our cousin to court for defacing our late father property with red paint, and for rent, owed; water, and electricity bill they have not paid, thus the light, and water was cut off while they occupied the house. In addition to the feces they left in the toilet stinking like dead people. Boy/girl be quiet!

@Shillingford the issues isn’t the rules DLP (the symptom) nor the leadership of Lennox Linton, the issue is the mentality of the Dominican electorate.
Let me explain. Dominica IS a democracy, no one at the recent election voted under threat, duress, or coercion. In my humble opinion, the UWP under the leadership of Lennox Linton and supported by a magnificent and professional team, was eloquent, transparent, honest and well researched in presenting a viable alternative to the current regime.yet they were rejected.
There have been many allegations of corruption, illegalities and impeachable acts, yet the ruling party prevails.
In a democracy a vote at the ballot box is THE ONLY WAY to change a government. So while the rule of law and the constitution CAN remove individuals from Power,it cannot remove a ruling party.
There can be no one living in Dominica today over the age of 18 who cannot see the state of the country, yet for reasons only they know, they have voted for more of…

The government have to work with the opposition because the government currently is doing Dominica a lot of harm, imagine signing away 15acres of Trust land, and not listening to intelligent discussion by the opposition. This was a wrong against the people of Dominica an arrogance of the government.

Ok not telling the UWP what to do, but they are not readding the country well Lennox will not ever be PM of Dominica, which means the UWP will not be in power even when they should be, understand the demogphics of Dominica,Lennox will not be able to bring all of Dominica together. I knw the trustees of the party want a Marigot man to head the party, but remember Dominica is not Marigot. Lennox would not even win marigot if it was not for Eddison James support. If lennox loved the party and the country he would acknowledge that and step down as leader.

Dr. Thomson Fontaine elected unopose as International Secretary? It sounds like to position was created specifically for you Dr. Thomson Fontaine.

Perfect cover to spend ‘a lot’ of time in the US … maybe returning to teaching as an adjunt of U of M and playing business consultant while living at his home in Maryland – but “officially doing Diaspora duties on behalf of UWP” – not bad strategem for a bunch of newbies.

“Don’t believe that you will say what you want, do what you want with the honorable name of Lennox Linton and then he will be required to smile in your face and congratulate you for skullduggery and in your face doing all sorts of things, he doesn’t operate that way, that is who you have, that is who you have chosen as your leader, anytime you don’t like it, anytime you fed up of it, let’s move on to something else,” Mr Linton said.

The DLP supporters who want to tell us who should be leader or deputy
, should take a lift from our meeting. Now is the best time to tell DLP members we need a new executive to run the affairs of the party ( read between the lines ). Good luck democracy must prevail.

    • A Doubting Thomas
      March 3, 2015

But the UWP like to tell the DLP and Dominicans what they want us to do? Like telling people living in the diaspora if they come home they will report them to the authorities where they live as if they were doing something wrong to visit their country. I guess they really didn’t want us to come home for us to see all the progress that was done and continues to be done by PM Skeritt and the DLP.

Who can blame them because Dominicans caught them in their big lies. Going abroad selling Dominica in the worse possible light and they want to represent a country where they say everything is wrong with it? No wonder they create a Diaspora Secretary to try fixing what they broke.

We all know it is the public purse and what this government has been able to accomplish after the disastrous 1995-1999 UWP fiasco they want. Dominicans cannot allow that to happen again so soon. But on the other hand, I agree with the UWP; They are not very good examples for anyone to want to…

Newly re-elected political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Lennox Linton says he will be “insisting” that his position is respected by all. Is that true??? Saw excerpts of his speech and boy! That is what you call arrogance!

    Ways to spot arrogance:

Arrogant leaders advance their own agenda by telling others what they want to hear.
Arrogant leaders emphasize your responsibility to them.
Arrogant managers don’t have time for people.
Arrogant bosses focus more on getting than on giving.
Arrogant people expect others to serve them
    Arrogant people brag about themselves.
    Arrogance blames.
    Arrogant people use organizations.

Election is over and he has taken his position in the House and is now controlling 10 seat but he is not satisfied because he still sees himself as the Hon Prime Minister. I like all the candidates chosen though it is sad to see Claudius Sandford replaced as deputy leader of the party. That I think is a serious blow to our image as Kalinago people and we sure cannot blame UWP for not giving us an opportunity, neither can I blame Sandford for not making himself available. When UWP made Sandford the deputy leader of the party, they gave us two opportunities to raise our image and be in a position to create history by having our first potential Kalinago Prime Minister, but being who we are, chose defeat over victory for some plywood. But you see, you could take a goat and dress it like a sheep and even change his name to sheep but that will not change what it is. Skerrit and the DLP will continue to use us, abuse us, make us feel good, but will never do anything meaningful that will change our esteem, UWP showed us that they were willing to change that and shame on us for not embracing this moment! Skerrit MUST be laughing at us.

      March 2, 2015

@Carib Boy……….the development of the Kalinago people began with the DLP. Leblanc changed the Carib Council to Village Council and for the first time in over 140 years the Kalinago people enjoyed equal political recognition as all villages and towns. Under the Leblanc Administration the territory was upgraded to constituency status and a Kalinago national contested and won an election to the House of Assembly for the first time in 150 years.
In 1979 on the attainment independence the Patrick John Administration gave them the title to their territory.
The verbal abuse of the plantation system began to diminish with the Labour party, before that many were ashamed to be recognized because of their race. I have personal experience when I lived in the Vieille Case and Penville area. All my comments are based on personal experience.
My advise to you is to get the facts straight and inform yourself.
You should endevour to motivate the development of your land, your own.

@ Carib boy, just to remind you Edison was replaced by Lennox the UWP gave no consideration to Sanford to be leader. So please don’t forget your recent history. The UWP rejected Sanford and as such the Kalinago people again rejected the UWP/Team Dominica

      • Carib boy
        March 3, 2015

@point, being deputy leader does not always mean that one is ready to lead. When James left UWP wash dead down. They needed a strong man, with a strong voice, and a strong audience to lead the party. At that time Mr. Sandford was not ready. In fact he did not even win his seat I believe if he had won his seat maybe they would have more confidence in him. I for sure would still be a laborite if it had not been for Lennox at the top.
Let me also remind you at point that when Pierro died Ambrose was the deputy leader. Skerro was not even a senior minister neither did he hold a senior ministry; yet he was made PM and leader of the DLP so you need to get your facts right. We understand your agenda and you will not succeed.

Skerrit can now show us how he and the DLP love us by making .Casius Darroux the deputy leader of the DLP, since Ambrose was rejected by the people. But trust me, Skerrit will not even make Cacius acting sports minister let alone deputy leader. We are just being used, abused, mocked and laughed at by Skerrit and the DLP. Let me try again. Earlier today (after 6:00 am) I sent a comment and DNO did not publish it. I am trying again. Congrats to Joshua for being elected to the position of Deputy leader. You continue to make good headway in your personal progress in politics. That will stand you in good stead. I however wish to note that you should remain forever vigilant. Given the public support you have received since December 8th, your party seemingly is worry that you will hid the “people’s cry” to distance yourself from a party whose leader sees only confrontation as his only motivation for leading. You are seen as a person who is cut out forma different cloth. Since they cannot dispense with you with the ease with which they cleared Isidore from the party’s machinery, they have strategically placed you in a position where it will be very difficult for you to speak your mind on the issues in opposition to your leaders view point. But you must be vigilant. Stay awake. Don’t fall asleep.

    • Me
      March 2, 2015

I note a concerted effort by govt. sponsored operatives to create division within the opposition by putting forward that Joshua Francis should be its rightful leader. Maybe in the future yes, but not at this juncture. Lennox Linton was democratically re.elected as the party’s leader and enjoys the full support of Joshua Francis in this position. Roosevelt Skerrit may think it would be easier to sway Joshua but the party knows better and right now it needs the bulldog tenacity of Lennox Linton to lead the party to its ultimate victory, a man that can not be dissuaded and is feared by Roosevelt Skerrit and his clique above all others. Let me assure you that the UWP stands United!

      • Observer
        March 2, 2015

Skerrit just beat him fair and square. Lennox himself knows that. See how quickly and easily Linton went to swore to the oath of office as Opposition Leader in the House. He could not wait for his first day in the parliament. In fact he is asking and should I say demanding more sessions of the parliament. Guess who is the leader of the parliament. You think you smart? make a wise guess in this regard. Is that the same Lennox you Skerritis scared of. If he had not recognized his fair defeat in the election, the same tenacious “bulldog” – waht a name you are calling your leader, would be still stomping for boots on the ground. Lennox was properly elected as leader of the UWP. There is no question about that. What is he worried about inside his party? Say what? Why is he demanding respect? Descent people who are genuine leaders work to earn respect of their followers. They do not demand respect my boy. Now go ahead and tell me I did not understand what he said. Think we foolish boy?

@Observer ………when ever you post well documented or well informed comment DNO will not post it, or they will say awaiting moderation, or duplicate comment. I would hope that Tim Durant who have attended siminars on usuing the media to educate and develop would do better.
So some people have different opinion than what DNO expect, but that does not mean they have to suffer indignation, criticism and name calling and false accusations. If I post non-factuals I will accept corrections not insults.
Even people who did not know Francis are impressed by his composure, his turnout, his attitude and his statemanlike contribution. Even when he is goaded or provoked he does no fall into ungentlemanly behavior. The man is setting a good example, especially to the youth. Good Job!

Is confrontation always a bad thing? Well it depends on the meaning you apply to the word, for example it is often said that one should confront ones demonds. So you and others are saying that because the elections are over the opposition should just keep quiet and wait for the next elections to highlight the failings of the government. In your simple twisted mind that would somehow be the action of a responsible opposition. I am perplexed and domfounded by the many of the comments I read on here by persons like shillingfird, lovely dominica and Emile Zapatos and have to wonder whether these people think before they write or whether the genuinely believe the things they write. When for example someone talks about arrogance but fail to comment on the words and actions of skerritt, it leaves one to wonder.

I believe that Mr. Linton is the reason the UWP lost the elections in December. From what I’ve seen and heard he detracted potential voters. I personally believes he is a detriment to the party’s success. Joshua Francis is the better choice as party leader. If the UWP is serious about winning the next election they had better think long and hard about their choice of party leader. Make the adjustment now, put Mr. Francis out there as the face of the party. Mr. Francis is qualified and charismatic. Voters are swayed not only by party affiliation, policies and qualifications but by Charisma and Identifiability. In the next elections the demographics will change the individuals who were too young to vote and and can better relate with Mr. Francis will be of voting age. That is what Lennox is not appreciative of. he thought the same way Edison James gave him the leadership of the UWP on a platter, the people of Dominica would have simply given him the top position in the land without having to work hard for it.. he cannot bring himself to be a follower, He must always at all times be at the helm. Sikir, congrats! you continue to make headway politically. Thatis good for you and your national outlook. But never ever forget, don not fall asleep on you – the Marigot Possie do notlike you. They only voted for you as an excellent political strategy to muzzle you outspokenness and free thinking. As deputy you will be forced to in every way to speak what they want you to speak to when and how.

Mr. Joshua Francis, congratulations to you, I wish you all the best in the future–all that is from God, His plans for your Life.

Remember to keep your composure–part of that mentality is self-control, which is the nature (fruit) of Holy Spirit God only works through those who are humble, obedient, and trustful to His commands–those attributes in man glorifies His Love.

Do not allow position to make you into someone you do not want to be–just remain a “down to earth” man no matter how high society might try to put you–your exaltation can only come from God.

I look forward to reading that you are working with our present government to move our Dominica upwards–that should be the goal of all politicians–first and foremost.

And whilst I am at it, do not forget our playing field in Giraudel–our young people there, needs it very badly–I am speaking here, on their behalf, you know why. Blessings in all your works of the future.

@ Lizavier4jesus, I was just about to give you a thumbs up but sadly, this paragraph spoilt it. I agree it should be the goal of all polititians to work together for cause of country. However, in our case in Dominica, it is not applicable since this present government is not working on bringing Dominica upwards but rather downwards. Trust me, if the opposition tries to work with the government you know Dominica would just crumble faster. Now if you really want to see Dominica go upward, you need to tell the government to work with the opposition because it is the opposition that is keeping the country from the destruction of skerrit and the DLP. Can you imagine what would become of Dominica if the opposition would give skerrit an inch?

Hehehehehehehehehe! Do you know what? I accidently gave you the “thumbs up” which you did not give to me–number 6 is mine otherwise at this point you would have 5-7–good Lord!

However, at Christmas time I personally read Mr. Francis saying he will “work with the government” this does not mean that he is going to accept every plan without standing Analysis of the “plan in question” before it is put into work.

That should be so on both side–the ruling government and the opposition–the opposition cannot just say no to every plan and neither should the government simply turn a deaf ear to the aspects introduced by the opposition–this kind of mentality constructs no kind of unity or harmony; hence nothing is done for our country and her people.

It is the one-sided mindset like yours that keeps our Dominica divided and slowly moving; did you ever think about that?

Honestly i have no respect for you as a “so called person of God” During this last election Gods tabernacle was desecrated, his temple was used for all sorts of foolishness. I don’t see how a person of God could have let all this go on without putting it a stop to it. It was all lies, debauchery etc. The whole principle of giving only our supporters and ensuring that people follow to get something is just so wrong. It is already wrong to give free goodies it doesn’t help the poor escape poverty. Look at the example of Venezuela. We have always been trained from kids to work hard and be dedicated and we will reap the rewards. What i see are people riding on the ignorance of the people and enriching themselves while the poor remain poor. There is widespread victimization throughout the land. If you give, give those who deserve and not the mother, father son daughter uncle nenen because they are your party crony.

“I look forward to reading that you are working with our present government to move our Dominica upwards–that should be the goal of all politicians–first and foremost.” (Elizabeth Xavier).

Elizabeth, I am in the twilight zone, nevertheless, I cannot imagine that you believe that any member of Dominica’s society stand a chance to work with Skerrit and his Labor Party. If Skerrit had any intention to work with an opposition, or unelected member of the opposition, he would not insists on spending over thirty million dollars to capture four seats he knew the people of those constituencies under no circumstance would vote for his party.

It is not about working in unison politically, in the interest of the country; it is all about Skerrit, and consolidating his political power. Your hope can only be accomplished in the twilight zone!

Francisco, in your “twilight zone” as you described yourself, you come across as someone who go to sleep every night hoping and praying that when you wake next day, you will hear something drastically wrong has occurred in Dominica and that Skerrit is the architect of that mishap. When you do not get that kind of satisfaction, you and others of your ilk manufacture all mannner of evil against Dominica. You suggested that Skerrit spent I=upwards of thirty million dollars in the last election. OK! Can you provide the evidence to prove your damning accusation? Yes the DLP spent a lot of money. Are you suggesting that the UWP did not spend any? Give the people the evidence you have in support of your case.

You said it for me, and I say Amen!

Just to add that this man has nothing productive in his mind to share with other–that is true; his ideas are all from that “twilight zone” of his, full of negativity and the futility of death. I just regret that he is always mentioning my name in his stupidity. There must be something great about me, that causes him to want people to know he knows my name.

The 30 million dollar nonsense is his “new song” since after the general election; he cannot provide evidence because the lyrics are his own composition–no one will accept it.
