Mahaut embarks on becoming a model village

The Mahaut community is getting set to launch a major project which it says will enhance efforts in becoming a model village.

The project dubbed “Mahaut Environment Protection and Enhancement Project” is a joint effort between the Mahaut Village Council and the Small Grants Programme.

Chairperson of the Village Council Annette John Charles-Steadman said the project will seek to address several issues affecting the environment in Mahaut

She said the project will include the building of recreational parks and to control the issue of garbage disposal.

“Under the Program, we will also seek to beautify the communities. We will also install bins in the communities because we have been suffering from poor garbage disposal of garbage and we are trying to get it under wraps,” she said.

According Charles-Steadman, the establishment of green spaces throughout the community is also on the cards.

“We also want to increase the practice of composting in Dominica and raising the awareness of disaster management for climate change,” she said.

The official launching of the project took place on Saturday.

people need to think positive; there was a time when mahaut was a model village; lots of yough groups, girls guides, brownies, rangers,4H; scouts; etc, etc, teza ground with cricket, youth was not idle at that time, always something to do. and the best was the night life; laween; cockman volay pool;,your mother and my mother were hanging out some clothes, my mother gave….etc; can you remember these ring games, oh how I really miss these times, maybe these need to be resurfaced; also the village that never sleeps; sometimes they prevent some crime as there are people out at all hours.

I try to understand why DOMINICANS cannot just come together as one. The whole damn country is negative, why grudge Mahaut, in fact, you guys would grudge any other village because you just cannot see someone else ahead of the game. Negative people grow the …. Up. You only disgracing yourself with your foolish talk. If the people want to be on the road drinking rum that’s their problem, mind ur business and stay out of other people biz. That’s why you small minded people will stay Da and rotten

Well Mahaut ,this is a step in the right direction ,so congrats .You can be an example to other villagers, but you have to get the village people involved and comitted .This have to be a long range plan with a goal of making Mahaut a town, acity.
Do not worry about the critics..Mobilize the people to volunteer and help wirh the work .

It bleeds my heart to see such a wonderful village where everyone use to be mothers and fathers to each other’s children, sharing with one another, loving one another, togatherness, communicating with one another etc.

Gone were the days when the girl guides use to go to church every fourth sunday and after church marched down the village from massacre to mahaut center, and everyone use to line up the road to watch them marching saying left right , left right, stand at attention, bobber jobbing in the village etc.

gone were the days the scouts use to do the same thing. mahaut had a lot of activities especially on a sunday afternoon. i remember father reggie in those days he was not a priest yet, use to come every sunday afternoon to play martinee in the center and every child use to look forward to that moment. How many of us remember teacher joseph who taught the entire village in her school where the credit union is now Located eh? That little old teacher god bless her soul should be honoured during the reunion mahaut i hope somthing is being done in her honour and instead of the leblanc monument in belfast we should have one of our own. i am not saying it is not a good suggestion for the hon.leblanc to be placed but it is in the wrong village. Now it is just a different environment. POLITICS HAS TAKEN OVER OUR VILLAGE. HATERS ARE EVERYWHERE, lack of togatherness and it is just choas in mahaut. If one has to come and make a server in mahaut is just one set of people getting involve. That just should not be. OUR PEOPLE ARE JUST TOO DIVIDED IN THAT VILLAGE OF MAHAUT AND WE OUGHT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

    Question to the Chairperson:

Is Jimmit part of Mahaut and the project you are embarking upon? If yes, grateful if you and your team would take a look at the area in Jimmit, past the gas station (heading north) close to the children’s home. This area is being utilized as a dumping site for white goods (lots of refrigerators, stoves etc). Please do something. Thank you.

Mahaut you are being fool again by your government. For Visitors; Mahaut, is clearly considered the armpit of Dominica (not a clean one either). The Village Counsel alone cannot fix Mahaut, every tent/house on the ocean side needs to go, septic system needs to be put in place and find higher ground. This is a disgrace.

And you are saying that this is the fault of the government that these people built their houses on the sea side…right?
Don’t you think that the villagers themselves are responsible for the dilemma they are in because of their squatting on property they should not be on? Now they have created a mess that the government (regardless of which one is in powere) has to try to fix. Where was planning years ago when these people were building along the seashore?
Is that Skerrit or Blackmore’s doing?

can someone tell me how can mahaut be a model village.
buildings are erected on the main roads with veranders over hanging the main road making it difficult for container trucks to get by…a set of galvanised houses and fence…
people always on the road drinking, not much productivity coming since alot of the young men depend on their palrep to provide their daily booze stipend…
if they mentioned bellvue or even sultan, i would say well ok since new houses are been built, people trying something but MAHAUT… GIVE ME A BREAK.
before a child can speak is RUM de know.. unproductive=model

How villagers of Mahaut were fooled into believing their Govt. about that Petro Caribe business. They built the Petro Caribe fuel storage tanks on the banks of the beautiful Belfast river. Mahaut villagers said nothing. They had no environment concerns. Churches, Village Council, other groups and their leaders said nothing.

Building on the banks of the Belfast river is a major environmental issue. Be real my people.

Dominicans were told with Petro Caribe, electricity bills would go down, down, down. Cost of Fuel at the pumps would also decrease. What is the situation now? Dominicans, Mahaut people were fooled again. They were told that a playing field would be set up close to the sea, next to the Petro Caribe facility at Jimmit. Fooled again and again and again.

Check the project at Rodney’s Rock. How much money was spent there? Mahaut villagers do not know. They have never been told. I wonder if the Village Council knows. Just look at the size of the bars. How often is the facility used? Many stood there and accepted the untruths.

How many workers from Mahaut worked on the project to renovate the Teza playing field? Not one. Surely, the Village Council again does not know the cost of the project or how money was spent. Again people just stand there and accept anything.

I long to see a MODEL example of people willing to make compromise for future generations, if not for Dominica by extension….they would get better property insurance rates, being away from the waterfront and not being a potential wave breaker every hurricane season…. allow the waterfront to be put to better use for community development, and stop trying to extort those who want development by demanding more than your seaside property is worth… lets go mahaut I know you can do it…..

For mahaut to be a model village they would first have to purge themselves of back biting and minding ppls business. They thrive @ seeing their fellow men down. Mahaut full of young sookooyah they need prayers. Nothing and no one can change mahaut if the people in the village don’t change themselves first. They grudgeful and spiteful and that’s how they find pleasure!

What patat model village… Oh please!

For Mahaut to become a Model Village, the traffic problem has to be addressed. I wish them all the best but the traffic nightmare in Mahaut must be given top priority. If that can not be done, then MODEL is the wrong adjective in that case.

    • Reality
      June 25, 2012

In order to eliminate traffic problems in Mahaut the Government will have to either:

      1. create a BY-Pass on the sea from Massacre to Jimmit so that traffic not having business in Mahaut will not pass through the village; or

      2. Purchase all the property on the sea-side and re-locate the residents in order to accommodate a widening of the road.

As we all know, this would involve tons and tons and tons of money, which the country doesn’t have.
And so the traffic problems in Mahaut are there to stay. Unfortunately.
