UPDATE: Man shot in Wesley during house break-in

A man was shot and injured in an alleged robbery in Wesley at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Reports are that the gunman broke into the victim’s house, and during a struggle, the victim was shot in the stomach. He is now a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

The victim, who is about 40-50 years old, lives alone.

One man has been held for questioning in relation to the incident.

Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin is planning to hold a peace conference in Wesley on Sunday, Jan. 23 at the Wesley Catholic Church. Behanzin said there is an increase in crime in the village.

This is the second shooting in less than a month.

In December 2010, Vaughn Dodds was shot multiple times. The shooting occurred from a vehicle. Dodds is still a patient at the hospital.

Twenty-three-year-old Lee Anthony of Morne Rachette has been charged with attempted murder and shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm  to Dodds .

Anthony is currently remanded at the Dominica State Prison.

In late December, a 22-year old woman of Wesley was remanded into custody after being charged for the attempted murder of her cousin. Muriel Thomas allegedly stabbed Rosemund Cheryl Thomas with a knife in her neck during a dispute.

You know who is responsible for crime? The one who commit the crime! The criminal is responsible. It’s that plain and simple. If you commit the crime you must do the time.

People must learn to take responsibilty for their actions. We must stop making excuses. We must stop the blame game. Do not blame poverty, the government, the region of the country, the economy, and parents. Mothers especially gets many of the blame for the actions of grown men and women.

We must stop the “It’s not my fault” mentality that’s taking over the whole world. This is not only a Dominican problem. We must get rid of that victim mentality!

what can the parlint rep do???????

a rep has to be actively invovled in his or her community during special events and holidays,i times of festivities and in times of sadness. It is his or her duty to bring reassurance to the community they serve. In this case where there has been a heightend increase of violence in the community. The rep needs to come forward in some sort of town hall meeting, public anouncement and let the community know that him or her cares. Your community is been shoved under the bus by ignorant people who do not know it, bring back confidence to the community and the country. I hope this ansanswers your question. that is the job of a rep.campaigning is every dasy not just during election when the votes are needed

Why do we keep on blaming others for our kids bad behavior? Our kids are our responsibilities not the Parl Rep or the communities we live in. Gone are the days when the neighbor was allowed to spank your kids. We need to teach our children right from wrong when they are small and not wait when they become adults.Too late has always been the cry.

It is not the lack of jobs, the government or Skerrit who are to be blamed for the upsurge in crime, but we ourselves who have become complacent and toleranr of the deviants and recedevist among us.Case in point, every person in Grand Bay knew about the reputation of the two brothers who were killed in Grand Bay, every villager knew that those two brothers had fled prosecution in ST THOMAS after murdering an ac quaintance in St Thomas every villager knew of their violent and anti social behavior and yet the entire community felt at ease to have them living in the open among the populace.WHY was the presence of these anti social individuals not reported to the police, when it was a well known fact that they had fled St Thomas to avoid proecution, That exercise in COMMUNITY POLICING was lost on those Grandbayrians A GANGSTER is highly respected in Grand Bay. Take a look at how they strut up and the Laley

Where there is illegal drugs operating in the villages, there will be crimes. Sometimes it is not the drug industry itself, but the drug culture,
Added to that you have men who learnt their desparado habits overseas and got deported back to Dominica, and instead of thanking God for the opportunity to start a new page, they creat trouble here. Trouble has become their wy of life. These men bring back a notoriety with them that make the local boys decide they are not taking chances with them. I am not saying that this is the only reason fof the crimes, but for sure at least three of the killings since the holiday season involved deportees.

I appeal to the Government to re sign his contract as chief magistrate all magistrates make mistakes his is less than theirs God bless you Behanzin you will be on the bench again we will pray for that cause.I hope the AG listen to the voice of God if he believes in him and leave Tiyani alone he is a good man for Dominica do good to ROOSEVELT DOUGLAS son or his ghost will hunt you Levi Peters.

Many of you bellow are still playing the blame game….it is not me, is the Gov’t, or it is the Pal Rep, or it is the Politics,or it is the Church….but what about each of us as an individual….what have we done to assist? Have we been holding our own? Have we taken up our role as Mothers, Fathers, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunt, or uncles. Have we encouraged a friend? or support them to turn the cheeks, or somthing of that nature? Have we shown our peers, its aight to be a Christian, to praise our God, go attend fellowship, to not drink or smoke? etc…… Have we done our part? Once we can answer positively to these we can then start pointing fingers…..

The churches have united and village groups are working but where is the government to pull all these resources together to make it work. We need leadership in Wesley.

Yes crime will take place but at the rate its happening it is becoming the wild, wild Wesley. Where is the Parl Rep is a legitimate question. We need her to provide leadership to move us forward to the next level.

When a person is elected, their responsibilities are vast and varied. One of the top things for Wesley is Crime and security. She cannot do everything but she must provide guidance with the help of the community to lead us. It is a social issue and a community issue and as ministry responsible for both, tell us what your plan is. You know of the problem for years now and don’t say that she cannot tell people what to do. You can present them with alternatives and provide an outlet for those who are idle to find something constructive to do. The next level is not to pass the blame put to gives us the tools to deal with the issues confronting us.

Crime is a national and government issue. The government have to find out the root cause of the problem and then impliment solutions. This cock and bull story that government don’t tell people to kill is not working. There is a problem, work with the people to fix it. Put legislation, security, social and community services in place to help curb crime in our community

So true, but lets be honest. It is easier to blame someone else than to face the truth.

Yes there is a major lack of jobs.

To the parents – when your sons or daughters bring home something (like a blackberry) that you know you did not buy for them or that they could not afford, do you ask them where they got it from. We all want nice things, but when we know that we cannot afford them, we do without.

    • wesleyman
      January 5, 2011

This is not about a man shooting another man my friend, this is about a small community with 9 unsloved murders in recent times and a rash of violent crimes at present, used to be that something would happen and for a long time there would be peace, thats life we can all live with that in an imperfect world, but dont tell me that if you lived in wesley you would not be concerned about what is going on. First, there are four very well known drug houses in wesley, known to everyone except the police. when was the last time you read in any article, that a drug house in wesley was raided? we see politics as red and blue, politics is involved in every aspect of a person’s daily life, and moreso as a community. Who gives the guidelines to the community as to what will and will not be tolorated? let us be realistic, if you have the majority of your able bodied men and women unemployed and idle all day long, there is going to be trouble,it is the job of the people who are the community leaders and organizers to impliment programs to keep the youth occupied, yes there will be a criminal element, but that will be much easier to deal with. You know what saddens me? when I go home to wesley and see guys that were hard working farmers and doing relatively well, either in the rum shop or outside the crack house, wesley was a bustling agricultural mecca, now there are no farms because people have lost their hope because the markets are not there for the thing that they did produce; so that speaks of leadership, because compared to marigot the crime rate in wesley is large percentage points above that of marigot, the reason is leadership. Say what you may about Eddison James but he is the undisputed leader in Marigot, so the people take there cue from their leader and marches on and then the domino effect is an upward one, making people believe in themselves. we need leaders who can say more than, I labor, or workers; we need people with people skills, and who really love people and want the best for them and their community.

some of what you sat is true , but no one should allow themselves to get to the gutter because you think a government is responsible . Did our parents and grand parents depend pn government to survive ? no .they toil and took care of all of us with the absence of crime . Dominica has a population of about 80 ,000, do you really mean that the Government should provide jobs for every one . God helps those who help themselves. The problem is that Dominicans of this era do not want to touch the soil , they want fast money , so they will look at your hard labor and steal it , take to drugs , destroy people’s children and bring destruction on our beloved country . Dominica is a Blessed country with so much natural resources why not explore the resources God gave us freely ? Why cant a group of men come together and get a lumber factory , water bottling , metal waste recycling and so on in place . Don’t you believe that the Government would lend a hand , oh no , they wont , why?

So the man being shot was the fault of the Government?

Are some people stubborn or wicked or stupid?

The person at fault is the gunman.

He was not given the gun by the government, he was not sent there by the government and the proceeds he aimed to receive from his action was not to pay the government.

Some segment of society will turn to crime to feed their needs.

Most of us turn to work. We get a job pay our bills and try hard.

Stop making excuses for De Voleh!

What should happen is we kill one every time they come into our homes to steal.

Deportees who went away to other countries picked up the bad habits, refined their skills and were deported are now trying to do the same thing here.

    January 4, 2011

Science has taught us that we were all can be taught, but God reminds us that he designed a plan for all of us when he allowed us to be born. Assume that you are a young person with no commitments but intend to, or that you are a single parent raising your child or children, or that couple with you family, given such an awesome gift. It may be financially difficult or emotionally challenging times, what isn’t but here you are reading this news report. Now assume that it was you were the victim and switch shoes, you are the accused? What are we doing and who is it helping? Our children that we gave birth to have bars built to keep them away, they are called murderers, drug dealers, menace to society, society scorned and so much more. Our adults have now compromised their moral judgments that they prefer not to speak up to ensure their portion, too ashamed to raise our kids anymore. Say what ever your heart leads you to say but we are all responsible. What are we doing, and where are we going, we are still a people with a good heart and sound dignity, pointing a finger when four is pointed back at us is an indication that something more is expected of us and we are not even listening. We have become immovable Mountains, unshakable Islands, kill with our words because of so much war in our hearts. Why?

Let me begin by saying, WAKE UP MY PEOPLE!
I am from Wesley and proud to be! but the recent rise in crime is quite shameful!
MOT.. if u did ur research properly you would see that Wesley’s seat was won by UWP and not Labour. So your argument about severe crimes being in labour stronghold areas is null and void. I actually do not even see how you drew that reference. Oh and MOT how many seats did Labour win again? ok, so with ur “statistics” basically “severe” crimes (all crime is crime) are being committed in 95% of the island and “less severe” crime takes place in 2 constituencies just because they voted UWP? *I am giggling inside*
@well well.. the crime happened early Tuesday morning.. if I recollect correctly it is still Tuesday morning. Give the parl rep time to prepare a speech and give the local stations a phone call so a press conference can be held. I mean if that is what you want, because it seems to me that by a parl rep reading some words of a paper on national television, that all the crime in the village is going to miraculously disappear.
@concerned citazon.. Are you serious?? If I had to address you fully, it would be a 10 pg single spaced 10fnt sized letter, which would be too long for DNO. But I will try to be short and sweet! Are you unaware of your history? “Catholic church you say wii” Go to the library and read up on the Spanish inquisition, Christianity in the western world, slavery, the holocaust to name a few! Did you know that Adolf Hitler was a faithful practising Roman catholic? Now I am not one to preach about Christianity and I try not too and just so you know I am not an Atheist ! But by JAH (depends on the name you would prefer to call him) * Buddha, God, Allah, Jehovah etc.* Maybe we would be better off with out the 2 evils > (Politics and Religion) I have never seen a thing pull communities apart more than those two!
I do support and push for community togetherness! we need to put politics and religion aside and teach values and morals to our kids so that they can become upstanding citizens! & YES values and morals can be taught without religion. I do think that without the brain washing of religion that we can actually build a peaceful community! Now I know that as a people we need religion, health, morality, wealth etc. to make us whole as individuals! so that we can make decisions between right and wrong. Basically what I am trying to say is that we need Balance! No extremists!!
Bottom line : We need to stop thinking as small minded people in a small island. Crime happens! it is inevitable! as long as there is a sun in the sky, night and day, good and evil, ying and yang bad things will happen and can happen, we cannot prevent them, but we can make stricter laws that will probably for the most make them happen less, and with education, job creation and other means we can get crime into the 1% and maybe we can once again be the most peaceful place on earth!

Sir/Ma’am, FYI, Wesley sit was won by Teacher Gloria Dodds Shillingford for the DLP. she is more absent than Jerome Burke and Peter Carbon since the last General elections.
She had nothing to say after the drive by shooting of her former “bodyguard” Vaughn Dodds and the stabbing of the young woman so why should we wait 24hrs for her to give a written press release? Teacher glor does not care and we see that again. e’ve seen it before when she was Principal and we are seeing it again. She will not get my vote again for sure.
I will vote for Tiyani next election. I can seee that he cares about my well-being. Please mr Behanzin, come represent us.

ok so the seat was won by labour, sorry for the misinformation .. at least someone is paying attention.. Anyhow…what does that have to do with crime in the village?.. more absent than whooo? Peter Carbon?? If I told you I saw Peter Carbon a day in my life other than on TV and when he was campaigning, I lie! at least she is in Dominica. Anyway.. I was not trying to make my comment political.. I am against blaming politics for everything wrong that goes on in our country. I like how you only nitpicked on the part of my post. Fact is .. no matter who is in power and who the parl rep is .. crime is going to happen! & if u understood my post you would see where I am coming from.. and ps.. what did u see b4 when she was a principal? Well I attended STAH for 5 years while she was principal and I attended Wesley Methodist church for 16 years of my life and took part in her Sunday school class. So please tell me about teacher Glor… After all, she is only human.. what are you guys looking for superwoman?

the crime problem is all over dominica, not in any particular community. dominica is our country and we need to preserve it for our children and our childrens children. we need not blame anyone for we all are somewhat responsible. what we must do is to be honest, be each others keepers,to love and care for each other. we should call crime , crime no matter who commits it.no one is above the law and thus the law must apply to all

  35. Beginning to End
    January 4, 2011

Dominicans are always looking for someone else to blame except themselves. The onus lies with the individual. Did Gloria Shillingford send the youngman to thief, or Lee to shoot Vaughn or the young lady to stab her cousin ? Why are we so hypocrite?
Whether Labour, Freedom or Workers there has been and will always be crime. We need to examine our conscience and values..
We are too greedy, violent, jealousy and ignorant. We refuse education at all levels and indoctrinate our children with selfish thoughts then turn around and look for someone to blame.
We talk too much and fail to act positively. We focus on the negatives and things that will hurt a brother although we profess to be God -Fearing….
Dominicans bring in some positive changes in 2011.

So bkilling sombody bis a way to relief stress then?? This is the devils doing and our ppl are surrendering themselves to fullfill the devils wishes!!this is nothing about government!! Stop playing the blame game! When the citizens do wrong we blame the government!! So who’s to blame when the goverment does wrong?? Do we blame th citizens or do we blame someone bigger than the government and when that person does wrong do we blame GOD?? 44. Just an Observation, Sir
    January 4, 2011

I sympathize with this gentleman for his problems and pray that people of Goodwill provide the police with the necessary info to put behind bars this unscrupulous individual, cowardly act.

I have noticed that Mr. Behanzin wishes to hold a peace conference very encouraging and note worthy. While I praise Mr. Behanzin for his efforts and that of his organization and especially his US based lawyer friend, there are a few observations I wish to bring to the fore.

I’m aware that the US based lawyer has approached Pastors, Evangelists, Priests, Minister of Religion among others, while visiting the US to be part of that peace conference, but what is glaring is that he has yet to make an approach to his friends at Q95, the persons who have now become sanitary engineers, while inciting violence, causing a great divide among Dominicans, spreading hatred by their utterances, can you asked them to cease all that they are doing and saying.

How can all, that is Priests, Pastors etc. embrace such an offer when you don’t asked those people to stop preaching hate and division. As a Magistrate yourself, I hope you’ll asked all people to stop the hate and divide so that we have peace.

Mr. Behanzin will you and the US based lawyer asked that Q95 stop that hate and division and allow Peace and Unity to take root in Dominica? I’m sure that is not asking too much of you. Will you publish any letter or press statement you make to Q95 on this matter so that Dominicans will know you’re serious and that you’re not just trying something new as it were?

Happy New Year to you, Sir.

Now you must politicise it ????????? Again politics in 2011??? Not ashamed??? Again so early in the New year. Displaying blaming attitude again so our youths will do wrong and yes blame it on someone.. and continue because when I do wrong it is not me .. it is someone else .. esp the system.. the government. What role model are we displaying to the young ones? Always blaming someone?

Wake up my people – let the scales drop fromour eyes and let us do something each and everyone of us in our community . The persons in the community can form the groups. What about you start something positive in 2011. Form the group and bring your suggestions as to the adult clases in the consistuency. The village council and the Government cannot do it alone. And for once be volunteers as well, if you love your fellowmen, it will not be about money alone.. Do you have a skill , then share and teach some of the young men /women in your community as well.

True say look at the problems and do not hide … you did touch on some of the real ills.

We need to examine ourselves and also see if we are indeed contributing to the ills of society. Al our young men are under the blocks. Our young ladies do not see themselves as temples of the Holy Ghost and they protray themselves as objects to be used. Self esteem has dropped to the lowest level ( displayed by some of us as well).

Probably in 2011, we need to go look for the lost sheep on the “Block”. They won’t come for spiritual food so we probalbly need to bring it to them?

Anyone with me on this? We will probably pray about this and seek our Father for clearance on that one. We have to do things differently not as before. Our young people are out and the enemy is destroying them. Did not Christ say that he (The Shepherd of our soul) came to get the lost sheep?

f the Pal rep cannot provide any leadership then why is she there? The government need to step up and address the concerns of the community. Wesley have had many issues over the years and the community has tried and continues to find solutions but they need help from the government.

Stop blaming parents who have very little and is doing the best they can. Get rid of those drug dealers who are supporters of the Parl Rep. Get some gutts and disassociate yourself with the ones feeding the criminal activities in the village.

There is a social and security issue island wide and the ministers responsible need to get there act together and generate a plan of action to confront the problems. Stop putting all the blame on parents for not having a clear understanding of the issues facing Dominicans. If these criminal concerns are not addressed, I am sorry for the state of our country.

I honestly believe that the government is trying to place the blame on parents and society because they do not know what to do.

no disrespect, this is maybe a person who is not eloquent, as most of you , but they just want to contribute, and they write as they speak. but i pretty sure you got the message, and that is his or her intent, if it was in your favor you would let it go,just like the political situation in Dominica, both parties need to really take a course in POLITICS. HIT ME.

No more bananas, the market has gone down. So since its a farming community with less farms.. more idle hands.

      Face the facts.
And you know as contained in the Old Testament: “…If My people who are called by My Name humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways I will heal their land…”
This is the only condition that the land will be healed and crimes will be eradicated.
As long as there are those who refuse to worship God and if others become humble in their words (as on this Website) and perform good deeds in Jesus Name, there will be no healing for Dominica or any other land. That is the truth of the matter which Christians should know very well.
