No new taxes – PM Skerrit

PM Skerrit
PM Skerrit

There will be no taxes in the 2013-2014 national budget to be presented in Parliament later this month.

Prime Minister Skerrit made the announcement just moments ago at a news conference.

“There is a case for new taxes,” Skerrit said in response to a  question from the media, “there’s always a case for taxes.”

He said instead of imposing new taxes, the government’s approach is to seek grant and concessionary loans to finance government projects.

Earlier this week the prime minister announced that budget date is July 24.

He indicated that there will be increased spending on the health sector.

I have a feeling allu believe its simple and easy to run a country. Don’t you all realize that any body you replace Skerrit with will have the same trouble??? A country always needs more and more money to run successfully. If you want your country to be successful, you have to pay for it, if you cannot pay for it, you apply for a grant, and hopefully a richer country will grant you one.

Same ole same ole, when will Dominicans learn that Skerritt is using the same ole trick that politicians have been using for many years now.
My people , you have been voting for these guys for 15 years now and Dominicans are still racing to leave, no jobs, truckers are demonstrating, the justice system is in tartars, Roseau looks just like it was in Freedom party times, the sporting facilities for the youths have declined, Windsor Park used to host OECS basket ball ,Football, volley-ball and netball, what do we have now? Do you remember the good old days? In today’s world, all concerned leaders want more and better for their peoples, (eg, St,Kitts) but in Da we have less to work with, and you want to tell me that you still think this DLP is doing a good job>!?

Why are you all complaining and destroying yourselves with hatred against one man a son of the soil. So as soon as he opens his mouth whether he makes sense or not, a lot of you are showing the “unwarranted” hatred towards one man. Time to unshackle yourselves from hatred slavery and give a little love to one another. Give a little love , you got to give a little love because God loves us and wants us to turn from our wicked ways and seek him and to repent and this includes doing away with the poisonous hatred in our hearts. Pray for your leaders .. the commandment of the Lord.

While tax increase is always unwelcome news to taxpayers, I believe this time around the nation would have loved to hear something other than “no new taxes”. More important than keeping the taxes as they are, are interventions required to move the economy. We have been at a stand-still for too long and the average Dominican would welcome a budget which would target employment, cost-of-living reduction, electricity rates, agriculture, crime, small business creation, tertiary education, rural development, foreign investments and the like. And if tax had to go up in order to get these things, many of us would not mind because the distributiion of wealth in the economy would benefit us too. So, I am not elated as somee folks may be about this “no new tax” budget. Skerrit and Co cannot approach the future with confidence in foreign aid and donations by friendly governments. We need to build wealth from within and this is what the budget should be about.

Why don’t you learn how Government works? Grant and loans cannot be used at whims and fancies. So one can have funds (be it Grant or Loan) and not to be used for something else. Also funds can run short or not disbursed on time to pay. Those things do happen so do not mix the two projects.

Some persons need to educate themselves before they make those comments.

hmmm! grants and more grants. Is that all we have come to now?

    • Justice and Truth
      July 12, 2013

Who in Dominica will assist Dominica if it does not receive grants? Put on your thinking cap. Some of you write without thinking. All you see in your mind and ahead of you is negativity.
How much tax do you pay? How many people are paying taxes in Dominica to sustain it, to pay civil servants, for necessary repairs, constructions and for the establishments of certain services? You cannot obtain this without paying fair share of taxes. The money must come from somewhere. Thank God there will be no tax increase.
You are one lucky person and you do not realize it. When you read intelligent comments, make a note of them and also retain them in your memory, if you have a good memory for later reference.

You ever heard of actually having products to export ? But no, the country is run on taxes, grants and loan. This is surely not sustainable. The amount of tax people like me pay in this country annually we could build a house cash in 4 years ! What a wonderfully imaginative and resourceful government !

NO NEW TAXES. While the VAT is a tax, there will be no new taxes or increase in taxes including VAT.
Check it out. Civil Servants get paid on time sometimes before time. It appears to me that you are disappointed as you were expecting new taxes or increase in taxes so you would have chain to roll your mouth or your fingers.

This is a PM who cares, and pays attention to the cries of his people. He will no doubt be re-elected. While the very weak Opposition spends so much time complaining, even though, they keep saying election is soon, the PM is busy attending to the needs of his people. Even if a new Party was launched, it is too late to have any significant impact on the people. You must do the ground work, aggressive campaigning online won’t cut it. UWP, learn from the wise leader will you!

Ignorance is the number one KILLER or ALL black people!!!!

Grants are non-repayable funds disbursed by one party (grant makers), often a government department, corporation, foundation or trust, to a recipient, often (but not always) a nonprofit entity, educational institution, business or an individual. In order to receive a grant, some form of “Grant Writing” often referred to as either a proposal or an application is usually required.

Most grants are made to fund a specific project and require some level of compliance and reporting. The grant writing process involves an applicant submitting a proposal (or submission) to a potential funder, either on the applicant’s own initiative or in response to a Request for Proposal from the funder. Other grants can be given to individuals, such as victims of natural disasters or individuals who seek to open a small business. Sometimes grant makers require grant seekers to have some form of tax-exempt status, be a registered nonprofit organization or a local government.

For example, tiered funding for a freeway are very large grants negotiated at government policy level. However smaller grants may be provided by a government agency (e.g. municipal government).

Project-related funding involving governments, business, communities, and individuals is often arranged by application either in writing or online.
