No reports of significant damage so far – Corriette

Don Corriette

Dominica has been spared the full brunt of Tropical Storm Isaac which poured heavy rains mainly on the north and east of the country.

Disaster Preparedness Coordinator Don Corriette announced  that as of Thursday morning no significant flooding or damage has been reported.

“Preliminary reports indicate that there have been no significant events or damage that we can report on right now,” he said. “We are still waiting to get reports from the different ministries like Public Works, Agriculture and Health also from Red Cross if there is anything of significance to report but we do not anticipate any significant damage.”

Corriette has called on Dominicans to continue to exercise caution as a Tropical Storm warning remains in effect for Dominica.

“Remember we are in the hurricane season and so the Atlantic Basin is very active at this time and we are likely to receive impact of Tropical Waves or just systems moving across the Atlantic,” Corriette warned.

Dominicans were placed in preparation mode several hours before the passage of the storm.

Thankful to God. In future for every storm alert, the PM should give 3 days holiday. One day for preparion, one day for in-doors and a day for the after math. Then, I will love him even more. :-x

Thank God that Dominica was spared. I am certain that many of you embraced the opportunity, utilized it properly and in prayer. God has also heard your words of gratitude to the Prime Minister, rewarded you and protected you and Dominica in general from the storm/hurricane which could easily have passed through DA with disastrous implications. God bless you! Praise and honor to The Blessed Trinity. May God continue to bless all you good nationals and Dominica in general.

Thank God we are spared, hold your own Don, hold your own P.M. you were acting on adise from your technical officers. The people out there who are not involved in disaster management, you are not an authority in that area so allow the technical people to do there work, you should be prepared to follow their or disregard it at your own risk. We had no instructions for David, and there was one a few years ago and we brought the grace of God on Nath for insufficient information; when they give advise we rant and rave. What is wrong with us.

For those who query the decision to be cautious yesterday, here are two quotes from The Weather Channel’s 10:58AM forecast today. ” The center is still broad and unfocused, and the convection (thunderstorms) is not symmetric. Thus the storm has not yet strengthened as much as some models had forecast.” Secondly, “So far, the storm’s heavy rain has been asymmetric to the south of the center, which has spared the islands to the north, but that can’t be guaranteed to continue.” Let us give thanks instead.

Oh yes you are correct, many times. The winds were gusty when getting prepared to go to work this a.m. Wondered why we did not get two days.

It showed incompetence by the persons, who advised the PM, to give yesterday a “holiday”. The information was right there on the weather channel. It was a STORM (not a hurricane) that was due to pass between Dominica and Quadeloupe on Wednesday evening. That was more than enough time for working folks to get home.
Are we going to get a “holiday” each time a storm approaches? When it is a Hurricane, maybe we will get a week’s holiday.
Being a thoroughbred Dominican, I enjoyed the holiday. My friends and myself spent the day at the bar. We prayed for a little rain and wind to ease our guilt, but got nothing. Maybe the next time.

Idiot always remember that no one can actually and factually state what will happen but go off what the system reads. weather like these can change in a split second. So it was the right decision.

disagree with the holiday if you wish but magwe ca,the working folks may well be your nenen antie cousin pawin who have to go all the way to the out districts. ten to one you are one of those that takes time out from your work to go to that same bar instead of attending to someone who just might need attending to urgently but instead have to waitfor you to come back from your “break”. smh

“On Thursday, Isaac is expected to pass just south of Puerto Rico. As the storm approached, Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuno declared a state of emergency, canceled classes, closed government agencies and activated the National Guard.

The government also froze prices on basic necessities such as food, batteries and other supplies and prepared emergency shelters at schools and other facilities”

        @ Still

I was amazed at the ignorance of some people and how negative they are with also their continuous criticism of the PM. Something is wrong with them and their brains.
They live in a tropical country and it is the hurricane season. There was a chance that the storm and/or hurricane would hit Dominica. They complained about the PM giving them a day off to prepare their homes for the inevitable, should it occur. They are fortunate that the brunt of the storm and also the hurricane bypassed them. In future they might not be so fortunate. One day they will pay for their ignorance and criticisms.

Pertaining to hurricanes, as I recall since elementary school days:

        June too soon
        July stand by
        August look out you must
        September remember
        October all over

Dominica and other countries have experienced storms and hurricanes in November.

      @ cohenval

You are not utilizing your common sense, if you have any. It was a storm which could easily have turned into a hurricane. Be grateful for the holiday. You should have used it to do some household chores or other. Do you have nothing to do at your home? Are you an idle person? Satan finds some mischief for idle hands to do. This include idle mouths, feet and fingers on the keyboard as yours.

Good job keeping people on their toes. We must continue to be productive however. Dont shut down the country unless it is absolutely necessary.

    • anonymous
      August 23, 2012

Let me ask. Is someone productive when they are asked to stay at work while a storm is imminent, all the while on DNO or BBing to find out what the weather is like and all the while calling home to keep in touch with their loved ones to ensure that they are safe?

        @ anonymous

I am adding, they will be under a lot of stress and anxiety as the rain is falling heavily, lightning is flashing, thunder is rolling and roaring, the wind is blowing strongly, roads are closed due to flooding and erosion of soil and the list goes on.
Those who criticized the PM need to have their heads examined. They need to see a psychiatrist. It is unbelievable that they would act in such a manner.
It is shocking to read and to conclude that they lack intelligence/common sense. They do not like themselves, do not like others and their country in general. Foolish people who have showed what they are capable of doing and saying – nothing constructive and sensible.

You wont do anything because you are one of the foolish citizens that we left behind. Its better to be safe than sorry. If there is no need for alarm you will be forewrarned. But this tells me that if only you could have tracked the hurricane u would have seen that it went over us and it could have either slowed down or sped up thank god which it did. Oh do you know anything about longitude and latitude, mmmmm i thought not.

Excellent work by the ODM and the Boss Mr Corriette. The government showed excellent leadership in the overall preparation for this storm. It seems like Dominica can be used as a model for disaster preparedness. The collaboration among stakeholders was commendable. Great work Guys! Thank God for his mercy on us.
