Students, teachers and parents here are getting a new and refreshing perspective on Mathematics.

Scores of students gathered at the Dominica Public Library to participate in various activities conducted by Dr. Rebecca “The Numbers Lady” Klemm which would help them explore Maths in fun and interesting ways.

Dr. Klemm is in Dominica as part of a series of a series of Math and Science workshops with teachers, coaches, parents and students being undertaken by The U.S Embassy in Barbados. She is using her exuberant presentations skills to explain the complexities of Math and Science in everyday language, reinforcing Math and Science concepts through sports such as cricket, football, and track and field.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Learning Support Advisor for Mathematics, Clement Vital explained that this activity is geared at stimulating students to love Mathematics.

“She is showing students different ways that you can make Mathematics very, very lively and interesting. She will be looking at the strategies with the students and later down she will be relating this activity with the Maths and Science teachers at about 5 o’clock.”

Vital added that he is very happy about the activity and advised parents to come to the workshop at 5pm.

“We are continuing to find and develop and seek assistance to make Mathematics (a) fun, loving subject again and we focus not only on the primary but also on the secondary levels. This forum is very good for the parents. Even the sports teachers and the coaches can also get some strategies to really reinforce what the students are learning in the classroom.”

He said that they are looking at the holistic view of how Math can be interesting.

The Numbers Lady’s visit will culminate in an exciting and free public presentation demonstrating the interplay between sports, math and science on Friday 6th June at 5:30 pm.

Parents are being encouraged to visit the event which will be held at the Public Library.

    We Just Hoped That the information of such activity was shared With The People Before. This is important for They Would Have Had Knowledge in advance to prepare and have Themselves Available and Receive. If things were not so, this is sad. Dno shared but same day, a couple hours before event. We are Thinking of the Time for the information to be Shared With Others, Those Concerned and in Need.     I am indeed very happy that we are going “back to basics” and seeing the necessity to teach mathematics in the “fun ways” in which it was taught many moons ago. I remember as a young student being taught mathematics through music, games, poems, and the use of manipulatives. For problem solving, teachers designed problems that children could really encounter so they could see the relevance of mathematics in their lives. But those were the good old days and good old teaching which for some years now has been called “traditional teaching” Those were also the days when “mental arithmetic” was in vogue. Teachers conducted those sessions when students walked in after lunch and sometimes for ten or so minutes at any other time during the day. Those were the days when you did NOT NEED to use a calculator to subtract 5 from 15. Of course the mathematics problem is regional one. Can you believe that I was shopping in a small Caribbean country and gave the young clerk $100.00 to take $75.00 and she had to use a calculator to determine how much change she should give me? But research has shown that many students are afraid of mathematics because it is not taught in a fun way. It can be fun. But we do have some great mathematics teachers and I hope all teachers will do their utmost to ensure that their students enjoy mathematics because it is part and parcel of everyday living. Kudos to Dr. Klemm and the US Embassy for this initiative. Teachers and parents should make every effort to be part of the exercise.

      It is so true. Some people cannot add and subtract without a calculator. I could add and subtract in my mind. This clerk apparently did not even complete elementary school. It is so easy to add and subtract. It is not as if she had to give some cents change. I would be impatient with such a person just as a slow as a snail clerk.
      It appeared that she was not given at least a simple maths test when she applied for the job which is a requirement for such a position.
      Today the computerized cash register indicates the amount of change. This makes people incapable of adding and subtracting without one and without a calculator.
      This society is too dependent on computers and calculators. As a calendar, our computer has a calculator. I never use it. They are certainly making this new generation uneducated and lazy.
