Outstanding PMH nurse aides recognized

Tarnie Green and Glenda Rabess, with average scores of 97 percent, were judged by the nursing Administration of the Princess Margaret Hospital as being the most outstanding ward aides for the year 2012.

The two individuals along with 20 other outstanding ward aides were recognized at an awards ceremony held recently at the Public Service Union building.

The awards ceremony, the first of its kind to be held in the history of the hospital administration was held under the theme: “A caring attitude making a difference.”

Matron of the Princess Margaret Hospital Letitia Lestrade-Wyke said a number of areas of assessment were used in coming to the final conclusion.

“A checklist was developed and a rating scale of one to four was applied,” she explained. “The areas of assessment included general work conduct, customer service, and managing work. Each ward sister was given the checklist which they used to rate the officers under their supervision. They then submitted the names and completed checklist of the two top officers in their unit. The checklists were reviewed and cross checked. It was unanimously agreed upon by the matron and the department of nurses that all officers who received a rating of ninety percent and above would be recognized.”

Ward Aides Coordinator Susan Sampson, in congratulating the awardees, said a proper attitude is a major key in making a difference.  The ward aides were reminded that focusing on caring of people is vital because without this focus one will fail in many aspects of life.

“Attitude makes such a difference as to how they carry out their duties and functions” she said.

Other ward aides recognized included Jefferson Antoine, Julia Thomas, Simon Gage, Philbert Fritz, Joselle Davis, Gloria Laud, Vern Esprit, Yolanda Christian, Alex Frampton, Ramona Vigilante, Josette Germaine, Gith Vidal, Karen George, Anita Casimir, Aarolyn Lloyd, Cheryl Lee, Christine Morgan, Vernonique Roberts, Marvlyn Barry and Rosette Ernest.

Special awards were also presented to Hilda Rhyner, Patricia David, Annie Brown and Athenia Harris.

Retired ward aides including Gemma Bethelmie, Christianie Lawrence Joan Ettinoffe and Maureen Fritz received recognition certificates.

@ Sweet nurse ..Why are you trying to bring Tarnie down?.The young lady is striving to make something better of herself and here you are telling the world where she worked.. earning legal income to take care of her family..Trying to spoil the moment? Satan always finds work for idle hands to do..If you are a real nurse please put that negativity away and strive to receive an award when the awards for the nurses is announced…Tarnie my girl be strong…Man looks at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart..

To all the awardees, I say congratulation. I extend congratulation to the Matron and the nursing Administration team; this was a great move. But please remember that while you all are trying to motivate staff you must be careful with the manner in which it’s done.
I have no personal beef with Ms Green and I also side with the comments that one can be working for twenty years and does may not perform as well as someone working for two years etc. And yes a substitute can portray a higher quality of professionalism than a permanent staff. It is well known to all, that majority of them will work hard as a substitute in order to become a permanent staff. It is true that some will maintain this professionalism although their career, and May I say hats off to them. But my God from the twenty Ward Aides you are telling me that not one of them could have stood out.
As a hospital worker I must say that someway, somehow something went wrong, this award ceremony was not entirely transparent. A substitute Ward Aide , who has only worked for about 11 months and worked only in one area in my opinion should not have gotten the Ward Aide of the year over all the hard working desired Ward Aides such as , Barry, Germaine, Laud, Casimir. This is hateful, I am not attacking anyone personally not the Ward Sister who graded her, not even the person or body who sat and developed the checklist. My point is I know that we are humans and mistake can be done but this one was too blatant. What about the other ward aide who got most outstanding, yes she is hard working but please appoint her, she has been there for a few years if she is good enough for this award then she should be appointed.
Everywhere you pass be it in Roseau, hospital, on the bus, at a function staff are pouring their hearts off with such disgust about this. Let me end by saying, I know that many of you, your shoulders have been broken but us lets continue to work hard. The gesture was a good one no doubt, there is so much work ahead of us. I honestly think that a lot of us know this to be the truth, so be positive, focus and let’s continue to give quality Ward Aide, Nursing, Doctor care at PMH . I know someone will respond go ahead I am speaking the truth on behalf of hundreds.

this ward aid selection was not done correctly. those who worked tirelessly over all these years did’nt recognised. someone who came less than a year was selected. this is poor on the selectors in casualty and in administration

Good move and hope that it continues. This will help encourage the Ward Aides to appreciate their work and know that they are appreciated and what they do makes a whole lot of difference in the care of the patient. In these hard economic times employees need that little boost in their work attitudes and encouragement to carry on and not feel taken for granted which they sometimes are. Blessings to all the Ward Aides good job

Is that that hit you there!!!!!!!!!! Take that. The way to start out in life never has to be the same sad way you end. Once you have life ,ambition, and determination you must make progress.

It is never too late for Ms. Green to become a qualified nurse – the next level !!!

You had to make such a statement. Depend on some people as you to state that. I usually ask: Who asked you for such information? Why did you find it necessary to mention it? Who benefits from it? What good is it to anyone and what will it do for them? There are some things that are better left unsaid.
She has projected that she is an ambitious, intelligent person. Working at a hospital has many advantages. She is well on her way to a better career and will reap great benefits than working in a store with probably no benefits, no promotion and no recognition of work well-performed, no matter how hard those employees work.

I got to agree with your comment here. Some people only pretend to congratulate another when in truth they are not genuine when they do so. If you are genuinely congratulating someone, you don’t try to make them appear belittled at the same time. The tone of this comment about working at a chinese store seems to exude an aura of ridicule. Let me add that working in a chinese store is no crime, at least its an effort at making an honest dollar to support oneself and their family. Learn to relay positive vibes to people when they achieve positive things!
