Panel discussion to address Bouyon Music and violence

Bouyon Inc, organizers of the Bouyon Festival, will host a panel discussion on the topic, “Does Bouyon Music Influence Violent Behaviour?” on Tuesday April 10, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the UWI Open Campus Auditorium.

Cornell Phillip, an original member of the WCK Band, Jeoffrey Joseph, the Manager of the Triple Kay Band and a third panelist, a prominent public official will debate the question. This comes against the background of recent public comments that associated incidences of violence in carnival bands with Bouyon music and Bouyon bands.

Journalist and Publisher of the online newspaper, Dominica News Online, Tim Durand will moderate the discussion.

President of Bouyon Inc. Larry Cambran says the panel discussion comes ahead of the launch of the Bouyon Festival carded for July 2018.

“As we prepare to launch our summer event we thought it timely to consider whether Bouyon Music had any impact on violent behavior especially during carnival celebrations and other public events featuring Bouyon bands and artistes.

“This is the first of two panel discussions we plan to hold ahead of the Bouyon Festival as part of our contribution towards the preservation and promotion of the Bouyon art-form,” Cambran said.

The panel discussion will be carried live via radio. Members of the public are invited to attend and participate.

this is nonsense. Does Bouyon music influence violence? Were there any fights this year carnival? yes! Were there and songs whose lyrics encourage people to fight? NO? so whats the problem? Morons will be Morons whether you play classical music for them or not. I have seen fights break out in church in my lifetime and hymns and such were being sang. IF you are prone to violence, then you will be violent. NEVER has bouyon music made me want to fight.

Many people have told me that they do not even care enough to listen to the lyrics, it is all about the beat. I guess that is why as a form of music it has fallen so far. The original bouyon albums put out by First Seranade and WCK were very far from what is today’s bouyon. Their music is what is still played in the other Caribbean countries at parties and not what is played now. I have had many embarrassing situations when “Dominican bouyon ” is played and everyone on the dance floor takes a sit, well I mean with the exception for maybe two Dominican who look ridiculous on the floor.

I think the violence got tied-in in the days of Klockers, mad squad, dog pound etc. Where these gangs were acknowledged on record before each song, something which is still done and makes me turn off the system before I even get to the song. So you would have these guys acting up anytime they would hear there names.

Alcohol and drug abuse are the root cause of violence during any activities. There has been voilience in the history of carnival activities.

So it seems only bouyon patrons abuse alcohol and drugs. 99.9% of violence happens in bouyon bands. Purple Turtle has a sunday activity for months now. The only time they had a roro was when Triple K played. Like it or not there is something with the Bouyon Bands that is the root cause of the violence.

It’s not the music. Well there is a common thread given the same individuals follow Triple K around, except to Grand bay, cowards for obvious reasons. I saw them in Possie Easter Monday some complete with gold nuckles on their hands. Trouble! One started a fight, everyone knew he fights at every Triple K event he attends. The sewo came to an end. Same happened with Jam Band back in the days in StThomas. Other Bouyon bands play and no fights. If you round up 5 known fellas from Roseau right before a Bouyon gig deliberately by mistake and release them on the Monday evening, with an apology, there would be peaceful Bouyon sewo. Otherwise let’s all go to church and sing in the choir. Lol

God gave us choices between Him and Satan. Satan gives us choices between him, the world, our selves, our possessions and anything which is not of God. When we listen to music we must ask ourselves this question. Dose this music glorify God?
The answer is usually straight forward! Yes or no!
Moses urged the people to chose a side.
Joshua said chose therefore whom ye may serve but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord!
Why are we here? After we have studied, worked and earned possession, we retire and then we die! What is our purpose? The bible says that many shall fall away and broad is the way to destruction! Does this music encourage us to pray or dance and drink and much more? We know right from wrong but i pray God that we obey the spirit to repent and live a free life! bound in Christ Jesus but full of authority in His name!
We deserve nothing people and good health does not keep us alive but God’s grace and mercy. remember that!
    Bless the Lord.

Does this Bouyon song glorify God? You be the Judge.

He came in second place at the Bouyon Monarch competition in 2017.
