Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said that work is moving “very fast” on the construction of the new state-of-the-art national hospital which is being constructed by the Government of China.
Construction works began on the China-funded hospital in October 2016, following the ground breaking in August of the same year.
However, work was halted following the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria on September 18th, 2017.
“Work is moving very fast; the Chinese contracting firm has really increased their pace and I would like to thank the Chinese Ambassador and the Chinese government for this,” Skerrit said.
According to him, the first phase will be handed over to Dominica by April 2019.
This, he said is “good news” for Dominica.
Skerrit indicated that his government had to take some time to do some changes to the design following Hurricane Maria, “so [for] the rest of the buildings outside of this first phase, the roof will be concreted”.
“There are some functional changes we had to make with the floor space – the use of the floor space, and the Chinese government has agreed to that,” he stated.
Meantime, the prime minister said in the second phase, a helipad will be constructed to be able to pick up patients at the hospital and transfer them to a hospital overseas.
He added, “We will have an increased water storage facility at the hospital to ensure that the hospital can run itself for several weeks in the event of a natural disaster.”
The US$40-million China-funded project forms part of the four-pillar projects agreed to in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the governments of Dominica and the People’s Republic of China when the two countries established diplomatic relations in 2004.
The contract for new National Hospital was signed between the Hunan Construction Engineering Group Corporation of China and the Ministry of Health and Environment on December 11, 2015.

How close is election now? I mean they dug up the 3D image of the cannot finish hospital since donkey years promise and now what? Another vote catching scheme to fool the masses, while the boys fly out helicopter style when they need medical treatment.

Politicians like to make promises and projections beyond their pay scale but I am hopeful. In my opinion the helipad which will be used only occasionally should be multi-function. What other function you ask? Well that’s above my pay scale too, but something that encourages exercising for staff maybe, considering limited real estate in that area by the hospital.
Why wasn’t this announcement made by Minister for Health – Hon. Kenneth Darroux?

If I read correctly that the hospital will cost US$40 million, I am very very positive it will not be state of the art!……..go ahead, prove me wrong!

OK dumbo, the government just built a truly state of the art hospital in my city. It is fully digital. Another hospital is being built and the cost is projected at $2.5 billion (these are not EC dollars). When it is completed, I am sure the final tab will be much more. So come again if you think you can build a state of the art hospital for a few million dollars.

but to take persons from the state of the art hospital to hospitals overseas .
Now explain that ”STATE OF THE ART” hospital to me , will it be one which the Government Ministers still have no confidence in , so they have to be flown for professional care else where ? will it be a state of the Art hospital where his wife cannot give birth ?

I will always believe that PM Skerrit and his government is the Primary Agent from God, to do His work of raising Dominica to her standard level; His work is in continuation–it is not over yet.
But He puts those hope of His works for Dominica in the minds of PM Skerrit that he might speak them out, for that is the only way those works will come forth–but at God’s appointed time–and whatever PM Skerrit speaks, he does so by God’s call .

That will be good news but apart from having a new building, need to have equipments and trained nurses, doctors and other personel. Also if the chinese are giving us equipments their should be trained Dominicans to service and access the equipments to maintain them.
So new hospital without those mentioned is no hospital.
