PM Skerrit says Dominica on ‘clear growth’ path after Hurricane Maria

Prime Minister Roosevelt has said that Dominica has defied the odds and is on a clear growth trajectory Post Hurricane Maria.

He made that statement while addressing a high level meeting on Climate and Sustainability Development held at the United Nations in New York.

Two short years ago, the Prime Minister stood the the very same UN Chamber and declared an ‘international humanitarian emergency’ in Dominica, after an indirect strike by the Category 5 Hurricane Irma, followed a mere two weeks later, by a direct strike from the Category 5 Hurricane Maria- one of the most powerful storm systems ever recorded.

According to him, the hurricane literally reduced homes, schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, general infrastructure and Dominica’s economy to rubble. “In the space of a few hours, Maria wiped out 225% of Dominica’s GDP.” Skerrit stated.

“Dominica has defied the odds and we are on a clear growth trajectory,” he said. “Our national recovery has been led by the resilient and resourceful people of Dominica at home and abroad who were determined not to be defeated by the mighty forces of nature.”

He said those who saw Dominica in the dark days immediately after the hurricane asked out loud how or if we could ever recover.

“As a leader I was forced to face unprecedented and “unimaginable devastation,” of the economy, the natural and built environments and in the face of it all, to motivate a demoralized population,” he said.

The prime minister continued, “Today, I am happy to report that the Economic Commission of Latin American and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has predicted that the Dominican economy will grow by 9% this year. Our infrastructure is being rebuilt new homes and schools have gone up and a new modern hospital is under construction.”

He indicated that the new structures are being built stronger and better than before in order to make them more hurricane resistant.

Skerrit gratefully acknowledged the support of friends in the international community.

“From the seeds of Maria’s destruction, grew my Administration’s policy initiatives and actions to build the first climate resilient nation in the world and to usher Dominica into a bright future,” he noted.

If miraculously the Skerrit – led regime is given another five year term in office many people would go to the grave because they won’t be able to pay to live. The Red Clinic is unsustainable. The rehabilitation of public infrastructure and the building of government houses will soon come to an end. The economy will become a virtual corpse. Dark, ominous clouds are gathering on the horizon ready to unleash torrents of pain and misery.

Various people post comments indicative that Skerrit is to be blamed for the downfall of the Banana Industry in Dominica in a desperate attempt to use a misconception to blame him for our main economic driver. Look at who was alive and well and all grown up in Dominica. I we use 1979 as a cut off point , Skerrit was about 3 years old. Now let us look at Clayton Shillingford who was the manager of the Jamaica Banana Board, Edison James, Economist , manager of Banana Association and Athie Martin who was Assistant manager off Geest Industries. maybe we should be asking them some question to get a true picture. These man are twice the age of our PM and know what went on with the Banana industry. Did a 3 year old kill the banana industry in Jamaica, and the Windward Islands ?
As for Ross, it was a business decision by a independent foreign company which was not a settler type as a foreign corporation.
Foreign companies are only interested in safety and their bottom line.

Your attempt to exculpate the feeble minded dictator from blame for the country’s present economic and social woes is so laughable. For your strenuous efforts, you should be paid. A first-rate leader takes both, the good and the bad. This is a government fraught with all manner of ills -rampant corruption, political mischief, transparency and accountability problems, thoughtlessness, gross incompetence and I’m just scratching the surface. It has been nineteen years of malnutrition, empty cupboards, severe flatulence, starvation wages, as a laughing stock of the international community. Change is inevitable if things are to improve.

Educate those BLUE BELLY IGNORANT FOOLS of the UWP supporters because THEY seem to know too much yet They know nothing. Fooled by those who know the truth but using the less fortunate to enrich their personal political gain. Athie and Clayton should be ashame of themselves. As for Athie, he is just a rolling stone that gathers no moss.

Joseph John, PM Skerrit was 7 years old in 1979.

Those people who continue to thumbs down the truth, they will have their reward in time to come.

I just cannot understand how can Lennox Linton claim that by the Government of PM Skerrit, Dominica is on the edge of a precipice–that is not true and Lennox knows, just as I know it.

But our God is continuing to remain with PM Skerrit and his Government for the Life of Dominica and her people; the better days are still ahead by the faith, hope, trust, obedience, humility, and fortitude, which God’s Grace to him for the best of Dominica.

Skerrit, ignored, abandoned and crippled our agricultural base and resort to flying all over the world with that amount of our heavy cash that could have been well invested into agriculture and other produce. Where are the benefits for all these useless travels. He came back empty handed. Now, we heard big passports sales to all kind of Ole Teeth all over the world, who have not invested not interested in our island development. They needed it for their travels to new places and Skerrit accommodated them.

every saint has a past. every sinner has a future. To to Dominican form, you will hold people hostage to their last fault and totally ignore their good and potential to do good. What if the high school drop out is able to increase employment, turn the country into a productive state, provide economic stability, easier access, improved security and everything else a respectable eastern caribbean country needs in order to be seen a preferred destination for investments and leisure travel? will you still think he is a horrible PM because he is still just a high school drop out in your mind? The PM we have now was just an English teacher tackling his students before he became PM. so what is your point?

      • April 2, 2019

@Karl Orndem, I believe that you are dreaming. But how long did you see in your dream that the High School drop-out would take to bring forth that “huge transformation” of Dominica’s economic and social status which you mentioned here?

ElizabethLinaXavier i dont walk with my eyes closed like i am sleep walking. Also, dreams, if worked on hard enough can come true. But lets not talk theory or semantics. After 19 years, we have regressed, there has been NO transformation. What we have are square pegs in oblong holes. Either you dont live here, or are part of the crowd encouraging mediocrity and a lack of standards and performance in Dominica, or are one of those getting paid to defend the nonsense happening in the country. All i need to ask you is name 5 top manufacturers that export directly to distribution channels like major supermarkets and other mediums. I dont mean the backdoor export when you come and take 3 boxes of a product back to where you come out. I mean container loads of value added products being shipped. Bello? Brewery & Beverages? like i said. Name 5, apart from DCP. then tell me we are doing well. If you know anything about economics, you will understand how trade deficits work.

Let’s take a look at our society, has there been any significant activity which created massive employment or any form of social revolution to improve the life of the masses? What are the social ills which were resolved by this administration? I look around and observe broken institutions along with communities cause if the institutions can’t function the communities don’t either! Agriculture is an activity which is wide spread being realised by virtually anyone and everyone unlike selling of passports which is realised by foreign entities mostly, which leaves the question of how does this distribute throughout the economy? This administration from observation has abandoned what served the masses in agriculture and replaced it with what serves a selected few in passport selling leaving the masses to beg hence social ills continues such as high unemployment, mass migration, crime etc but this guy continues taking advantage of the situation instead of improving it. Open your eyes!

” the hurricane literally reduced homes, schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, general infrastructure and Dominica’s economy to rubble. “In the space of a few hours, Maria wiped out 225% of Dominica’s GDP.” (Roosevelt Skerrit).

    According Roosevelt everything was destroyed!

    Watch this now!

When people are ignorant, and like to read any crap others write for them to tread even in places like the United Nations, they read the nonsense embarrassing themselves, and the nation without knowing they are making fools of themselves.

Very often some clown gets on a podium and talk about “percent” (%). The problem is one cannot  talk percentage without an actual figure or amount of something.

So, when Roosevelt states that 225% of Dominica’s GDP was wiped out, what is he talking about?

The question one must asks is this: 225% of what?

Each time that doctor speaks, he leaves me bewildered!
I do not know on what amount of GDP he based his calculation, and what formula he…

    • Pipo
      March 30, 2019

I too question this. GDP is suppose to be the total value of all finished goods and services produced by a country in one year. That is 100%, so how can one lose 225% of 100%?We lost a lot for true but we also gained a lot through CBI. That and and all the lawyers fees and agents fees should also be included in GDP because it is our country that generated that. I am not afraid to ask questions because someone may call me stupid. I am a Dominican and our P.M. is also Finance Minister and he should explain that to us.

Is it agriculture, manufacturing, tourism? How many new businesses have been created recently? Is the unemployment situation being seriously dented? If things are on the UP and UP, why do so many people still flock to the Red Clinic in desperation? Where is the replacement for RUSM that contributed to one-third (1/3) of country’s GDP? I could go on ad nauseam. PM Skerrit is a man without scruples, he’s a congenital liar.

“Cooking the books” there are no books. I agree that employment or unemployment figures should be posted, But the hotels and houses, and road and bridges being built all over should tell us that employment in the construction sector is up.

Elizabeth, those people are just using criticizen of the P M as a pastime to have fun at others expense. Those fanatical gang bangers and mobsters and looters are not going anywhere in a hurry. When some people cannot refute what you write with facts, but can only respond with insults you know they are drop outs from reform school.

So many of our people you having on NEP and now I hearing you must allow Kempinski to employ 75% foreign workers at their new hotel that is supposed to open later this year. What Coco Makkak is that. Bet you making the beach there exclusive for their guests also and no access for ordinary Dominicans, because we are too common? This little Dominican is really getting pissed now, you hear.

He has gone far enough in the destruction of everything that he has done to Dominica. Pack your bags and you come down and see. The man is abusing poor people, families, mothers by having poor hundreds of families waiting at the entrance of the Financial Centre to receive states money Skerrit uses as hand-out to these people. Skerrit has ignored and shoved off the professional Welfare Officers whose job it is to assess families and assist then according to their needs. Skerrit gives not in that order but appears to buy loyalty for his own good, not for Dominica or the families of these people he has insulted and shamed quing up for begging cash and he expects them to say “We love our Skerrit…”. We love of this fool my foot. This man is a big failure and reduced our people to poverty, unemployed, abusive political behaviour and the auditor does Nothing.

Is Ahab trying to take credit for where Da is today? Please tell Ahab and Jezebel that after Hurricane David in 1979, many of us felt the same way and many thought Da would never bounce back. But we were wrong because in less than two years Da became green again and many people were able to build back stronger and better with very little help from government. Somebody please tell Ahab that the difference between 2 years after David and two years after Maria is: After David we had our farms and our banana industry to turn to. After David Ross University was a baby but she didn’t die or runaway because they saw signs of hope. However such is not the case with after Maria as Ahab himself killed our farms, killed our banana industry, forced Ross University out of Dominica, our skilled people are running and we were not made a crippled handicapped nation by our government like Ahab made Dominica a handicapped nation that MUST look to him instead of looking to God! Ahab & Jezebel must go!

    March 29, 2019

So what are the growth engines seeing you killed our farms and our banana industry, you forced Ross University out of the country and coming to Dominica is like taking an Algebra test according to Ralph Gonsalves, which means tourism cannot be the growth engine? So how we going to do it? By selling passports to known crooks and criminals around the world? Since we are on this subject what can you tell the US state of Califonia about Danhong Jean Chen aka Maria Sofia Taylor? She is rumored to be a Chinese national with a Dominica CBI passport, and is indicted in CA with a fake immigration visa scheme that she was allegedly involved in and as a result, she left the US in October 2018, around the same time she became a Citizen of Dominica. Do you know her? Can you tell us where she might be hiding?

Skerritt the growth path is because of the sale of passports not retooling the economy. Under your leadership, there has been a contraction in agriculture, manufacturing, health services, exports and an increase in unemployment. We have become a mendicant country. You go to the UN to beg and you have more Dominicans coming to you to beg. The country needs a change of course.

Any Economist will tell you sir, that any economy that is reduced to rubble will show growth in the next two years but is that growth sustainable? We have loans, grants, gifts, monies from Dominicans abroad, international organizations, free labor from Dominicans and the most significant contributor to the economy, Passport monies. But what about real growth sir? Sustainable Agriculture, Production, Natural resources, Information Technology, Tourism etc. Where is the growth from these sectors? Zero is it not? Stop trying to fool the knowledgeable like you are the smartest. Dominica is on the edge of destruction, it is time to take a huge step back and rethink our decisions. Lets think about justice, and benefit of country rather than color and handsome prime minister, we have no international airport, no habour, no malls , no fleet of hotels, we are seen as a joke to our Caribbean brothers and sisters, we have high criminal activities in Dominica which the world doesn’t know about because we are not important! Mr. Skerrit is infamous for his hyperbole. His optimism about the economy is contrary to the truth. Many businesses have closed shop post Maria with no replacements. Unemployment is staggeringly high and getting higher. In fact, every sector of the economy is depressed and heading for a coma. There is disquiet in the public service over low, stagnant wages and salaries. Yes, some apartment homes have been built and a few roads have been rehabilitated. There are too many homes and buildings still with tarpaulin roofs, and too many roads, bridges and public edifices in a dilapidated state. The economy is near death in the Intensive Care Unit at PMH. Her heartbeat is undetectable. There is NOTHING to smile about in Dominica at present.

He has all the qualities of politics, socio-economic development, a feat that your clown Skerrit never had and will never had. Go about Dominica and see for yourself, or are your hiding somewhere in Dominica shamed to see the mess and deprivation Skerrit has meshed on our people. Skerrit is hopeless, immature, lack foresight and this is proven by buying people shamelessly by using and abusing states funds to by loyalty ands friends as these poor, hungry people queue up at Financial Centre for hand-outs and the buying of loyalty just to get votes. Skerrit you and clowns must understand now that you failed clowns are on way out. Stop using your remaining time on this planet obsessing about the critics of your deity, Roosevelt Skerrit. After a natural disaster, especially one that is widespread, there is usually a temporary uptick in economic activities. The rebuilding and repair of homes, roads, bridges, public edifices contribute to this boost. Where are the good paying, sustainable jobs? Unemployment and underemployment are among the biggest problems in Dominica. I ask this question once more. If things are on the up and up in the country, why do so many desperate people still rely on pittance from the Red Clinic for their sustenance? Too many citizens in Dominica are not living life as they should, they are barely subsisting.
