PM skirts around cabinet reshuffle (poll included)

Skerrit

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has skirted around the issue of an alleged impending cabinet reshuffle, saying only that he would advise the country about this if and when such a decision is taken.

“If there is going to be a cabinet reshuffle, when the prime minister in discussion with his colleagues comes to the final list then we shall advise the country”, the prime minister told DBS Radio’s Curtis Mathew.

“I don’t think it requires public debate or public discussion. We are not going to get distracted. We have a lot of work to do. We have done a lot and still have a lot to do…” he said.

Both Dominica News Online and the Sun newspaper reported on April 2nd that a credible source had disclosed that a Cabinet reshuffle is imminent.

“Dr. Kenneth Darroux, a medical doctor is expected to replace Julius Timothy as health minister and there are expected to be changes in community development, foreign affairs, agriculture, Labour and public works, with Charles Savarin expected to go on retirement,” the two media companies quoted the source as saying.

According to the publications, the prime minister was “not happy with how things are going and as he stated at the swearing in ceremony(following the December 18 general election), a reshuffle would come so that should not be a surprise at all.”

It was also disclosed that the reshuffle had been expected to take effect in March but had been “delayed for various reasons.”

Should the Prime Minister reshuffle the cabinet?

  • Yes (76%, 512 Votes)
  • Not sure (12%, 83 Votes)
  • No (12%, 78 Votes)

Change is good in these cases. Shuffling the cabinet creates a better chance to correct past mistakes by the administration. That will also lend support to a re-election bid.

I am not a party supporter. I disagree with you here. The government is doing the right thing by developing the infrastructure. That allows the private sector to include entrepreneurs the opportunities they need to launch their efforts that will improve themselves and by extension, develop and improve the lives of others.

    On a completely different note.
Has anyone noticed a white man, using his own vehicle,on a regular basis, starting from Colihaut picking up debris, trash, or rubbish if you prefer on both sides of the road all the way to Portsmouth and bagging it for disposal? Respect to you sir, this is definitely food for thought. You deserve whatever equivalent honour Dominica has to offer for going above and beyond.

Was there any reshuffle before by the DLP Govt.? Of course. Who is the present Minister of Tourism? Was he the AG at one time? Has the Tourism Industry improved? Even though one removes a square peg from a round hole, but places that same square peg in a different round hole, the situation would be the same.

Didn’t the medical doctor in Govt. side with a big businessman to build an asphalt plant close to the Layou village and our beautiful Layou river? What about the cancer-causing fumes from the plant and the negative impact on the health of the villagers? To be trained in a field is alright. Hand-in-hand with training comes Competence, attitudes, good governance, truthfulness, honesty.

Those Politicians must desist from getting rich quickly by dubious means, while in public Office, and fight consistently to stamp out corruption. Lespwi mal papai. The judicial system is failing the Dominican people Big time. All is not equal before the Law. There are many examples to show.

Govt. need to stop the sales of our passports to all and sundry as well as put an immediate halt to selling of our diplomatic immunity (diplomatic passports) to foreigners, especially those with reputable dealings. However, it is a far cry in our beautiful country. Will a cabinet reshuffle see more investments in agriculture? Wasn’t the past Minister of Agriculture posted to Trade? What are we trading more than before? What are we producing more than before? Reshuffle or not the policy is one of begging from foreign countries, instead of creating our own wealth with assistance from outside.

It is quite pragmatic to have an actual medical doctor to hold the post of Minister of Health. Tim Tim’s expertise is in economics. That’s his speciality.

    • Solitude
      April 10, 2012

Ishmael allow me to engage you on this. I don’t think the job requirement for a minister of government should demand a degree in the respective portfolio. The important requirement is managerial skills and as such I would very much settle for a degree in management as a requirement for the same. A good manager must be able to use the expertise of those who work for him or her to effectively perform. One may not have a degree in management but have learned the skill of effective management. So Kenneth may not necessarily be a successful minister of health just because he is a doctor. After all Ambrose was once minister of agriculture and what happened; Timothy was once minister of finance some would say he failed others will say he did well- one thing for sure he had prior managerial experience. Mamo was a lawyer but a darn good manager- at least she managed her own business for years. Edison James was a very good manager before he became a politician.

What we have in government today is a bunch of misdirected characters who have spent their time in personal enrichment , no time to develop skills that would help them to become better managers of the people affairs. The sad reality is the reshuffling of the cabinet will not yield any positive results – it is just more of the same.
