Activist says Dominica is ready for revolution

A man who claims to speak  on the issues of farmers in Dominica has called upon the country’s citizen to revolt against the manner in which the country is being managed by the Roosevelt Skerrit-led administration.

Rangy Aaron told a gathering of opposition parties on Victoria Street last night that the state of the agriculture sector is appalling.

He says the country is at a crossroad and Dominicans should stand up against that.

He says it could be a time to revolt.

“I want to let you know that the country is ready for a revolution. If you are ready you must stand up and not be afraid of the police and the authorities. You must be prepared to lay down your life for your children and your children to come,” he said.

I really do not understand why these farmers wait on the gov to do everything. Dca doesn’t have not one meat raring plant or a steady supply of meat. If bananas ain’t selling, then diversify into meat products and open a shop! Supply local quality cut meat to yourself and distribute it yourself! Dominica is one of the few places in the world which is not tainted by the huge tax burdens. Yet it is a country where people are very afraid to create and own their own company. How do you think rich people get rich? By looking at what gov will give? Or their go get it attitude? There is money for everyone right here in dca. We just have to get up and take it.

Judging from the quality of the grammar, spelling, and ability to articulate thoughts on this site, maybe you first need a revolution in your education system.

As for Rangy’s call for revolution, that is best accomplished at the polls.

I was not born in Dominica. I became a citizen of the Nature Island for it’s beauty, peacefulness and agricultural potential. Yes, that’s right potential. Dominica is too small and too mountainous to compete in large intensive monoculture agriculture. What Dominica has is clean air, relatively clean water, and rich soil, that has yet to be totally poisoned by chemicals and can be remediated. It has the potential to produce in sufficient quantities much desired organic produce, produce that can fetch a premium on the world market if the were but for a decent refrigerated warehouse system and reliable, affordable shipping. Dominican farmers are not lazy, they are unrewarded for their work. I might suggest that the revolution you are seeking is one of thinking. I would note that investment in what can produce foreign exchange should be the highest priority—not show palaces. Had I the opportunity to speak to the minister I would propose that farmers be assisted financially to make the transition to organic growing. Farmers would no longer have the expense of chemical pesticides, costly petro-chemically based fertilizers, and soil poisoning round-up type products. Yes, initially there would be a reduction in the size of harvest ( this is where government support is needed) but in the end there would be higher quality crops to market abroad.

I dont think that any Dominican wants violence in our country, we are all too closely attached to each other for that, we all know each other.
So its just some of us get a little too emotional when we get support. i have heard Mr.Skeritt on more than one occasion say regrettable things publicly, I have heard Mr.Tony Astaphan call for war.
But I dont think any one of these Dominican really mean what they say.So please people when we advocate and agitate let us excercise some more self control.

A revolution need not be violent, but if Rangy AAron’s name is wrongly spelt, the calypsonian in exile should stop to think that we do not have to imitate the Middle Eat or North Africa to bring about desirable change. Politics is the sole preoccupation of Dominicans; and with that brings divisiveness and conflict. No one strives for unity.Political Parties have reduced politics to a contest to rule over those silly enough to think their self interests have been set aside.

So Aaron calls for a revolution because the farmers who have never contributed a cent to the Government, are not being subsidised to their satisfaction. His call to rescue will get a lot of support from idle farmers who have surrendered their livelihoods to industrious Haitians who have no one to harangue. The private sector needs to develop a vision of Dominica separate from that of the subsistence style management of our impoverished Government by observation and consultation on their own. Mauritius did it and so did Singapore. For years, India with all its brilliant scholars, went through the same meaningless querulousness and vituperative political contention as we are having today; until its population got out of hand and serious economic decisions by the private sector were exacted. So all this talk and ridicule is “all sound and fury signifying NOTHING”

    May 31, 2011

Well frankly, let us hope we dont have to resort to violence but then again frankly,I conclude that Mr Skeritt, cannot, will not, would not concede power in Dominica. he is too compromised to do so. he is fighting for his very life, so lets pray for a miracle, some kind of peaceful way out. l aso I clearly remember Tony Astaphan calling for war too. also Mr. Skeritt himself threatening to call out the labour forces.
Domiica is in a very very bad position right now, and my people, nothing but fairness justice and righteous action can put us in a better place. Please let us each one put aside our personal likes and clean our hearts just for a little while just for Dominica, please, please, lets fix this please.

A ‘Housing revolution’ announced by Govt. had nothing to do with fighting for land/house/ furniture or taking cutlass against each other for house? Did it? The article does not claim that Randy is calling for a ‘REVOLUTION’ with violence, destruction with arms, knives, cutlass, guns or fire-bombing any elders’ homes or business places? The Universal Declaration of Human Rights gives everyone the RIGHT to Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Association, Freedom to peacefully Assemble and other rights.

Oppressed people all over the world are demanding revolutionary changes against dictatorship, poverty, nepotism, corruption, bribery. People want honesty, jobs, equality, a decent standard of living, among others. How did women attain the RIGHT TO VOTE? Very often through revolutionary activities. By constantly speaking out, organising protests, marches. How did workers get much needed rights, through revolutionary activities, meetings, demonstrations, mobilising workers etc. etc. etc.

Where Govts. do not manage the country’s affairs in a transparent manner, where there are many examples of Bad governance, corruption, quick enrichment by politicians and other Public Officers, where independent, autonomous institutions are heavily influenced and even controlled by the political directorate, where the economy continue to decline, where crimes, violence, inequality , unemployment deepens, in any part of the world, people will revolt, protest, demonstrate, march, rally, speak out against issues that affect their lives in negative ways.

History is replete with many examples of people fighting for their rights, for better standards of living, for democracy, However, It is very often due to the the exercise of absolute power by those in authority, lack of integrity, fear of the people expressing their concerns peacefully, refusal to listen to the people, that cause problems.

You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil. A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul.
    ~ Mahatma Gandhi

During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.

I’m not sure that we need physical violence to send a message to this lame government and so I must add that we need a revolution in Dominica – a revolution in the mentality of those politicians in government. We need people with revolutionary ideas.
A political party that is able to buy votes and support is heading down the wrong side of the free way so while I don’t condone violence this DLP is going to get what is coming to them. It maybe a dose of reality but i also suspect many will be pubilaccly and maybe i nternationally humiliated.

  40. Mary
    May 31, 2011

I find it depressing that every time Dominicans speak about an issue the best thing we do is to demoralize each other. Today it i is clear that we don’t have a country, we have a land where people exist.

Our institutions are broken and it will take a while to get back to normalcy.

Case in point: we have a police commissioner who could be called the Labour Party Representative for the Roseau Police Headquarters who is soo beholding to the PM that he cannot do his basic work of basic policing and running the force. So when Randy talks like this- don’t just dismiss him summarily- look at what is going on in the country?

I don’t support Randy’s rhetoric and position, but I don’t think there are happy endings with the current administration. We are heading for trouble sooner rather than later. The lessons of May 29 a few decades ago don’t mean anything. If we are not careful, then June 29th or December 29th will be a lot worse. A word to the wise.

    • Ha HA!!!
      May 31, 2011

You don’t support Randy? Give me a break and stop speaking on one side of your mouths. It’s evil power-seeking individuals like yourself who are trying (IN VAIN, I MUST ADD) to bring disruption, consusion and chaos to a peaceful and forward-moving Dominica.

But, don’t worry the majority of us don’t take you fools seriously, and the few amopung you cowards who dare try anything will be dealt with accordingly and very swiftly indeed (REST ASSURED OF THIS. WE DOH FRAID ALL YOU!!!!)

I think the authorities now have a golden opportunity, again, to teach Dominicans a lesson about free speech, democracy, and responsibilities.

And that is necessary for revolution

I am aware that we leave in a country where freedom of speech for us is enshrined in the constitution. However, I am also aware it is against the law to insight violence. Randy loves to hear himself, and becomes emotional when he is behind a mic. Mr Carrette check the law books and deal with Randy accordingly. Make an example of him.

I guess most people here when they hear the word revolution they think that it means war.a revolution does not always mean war please google the word.

      May 31, 2011

He certainly wasn’t thinking about a non-violent revolution when he said, “You must be prepared to lay down your life for your children and your children to come”. Forget about the antics and put the speech in context.

    • Nonesence
      May 31, 2011

No a revolution doesnt always mean war but used in this context the “man” means war because he mentioned “you must stand up and not be afraid of the police and the authorities. You must be prepared to lay down your life for your children and your children to come”.

Famers,,, When did the decline of the farming industry begin, why is agriculture at its lowest right now, should we blame the government or our lifestyle..

The farmers has put more burden on themselves and less time to cultivate their farms, They spend half the day of telephone and the other half forming ass.

There has been a complete change in lifestyle in attitude and general approach to life..

They can call for the revolution at anytime.. is the same results they will get,….

I am not for Skerrit but I think this is so unnecessary trying to incite violence. Why is it Dominicans are going crazy over politics like that. IF the people don’t want him then they will vote him out. IT’s not like he is there for thirty or forty years like other countries and clinging on to power. Leave our peaceful country alone, and wait your turn for power, all you power hungry evil people. And if you do bring war to Dominica, don’t forget we have a backup army in Venezuela.

    • Mr Sout City

you do realize you are brandishing the armed forces of a foreign country against the citizens of your own country right? i’m not in agreement with the way of how the message was brought about but people should have a right to express their opinions. your kind of thinkng gives way to military enforced dictatorship

        May 31, 2011
