Attorney says PM Skerrit has no intention of resigning

Skerrit (left) and Linton

An attorney representing Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has responded to a letter from Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, calling on Skerrit to resign in light of what Linton said was a “severe crisis of confidence into which our country has been plunged…”

In a response to Linton, attorney Lennox Lawrence said Skerrit has “absolutely no intention of resigning.”

“Indeed, our client instructs us that it would be a complete betrayal of his oath of office, and duties to the people of Dominica on the basis of a smear campaign constructed on the salacious misinformation and scandalous lies manufactured and repeated and circulated by you, members of your political party and Mr. Gabriel Christian,” a section of the letter reads.

Linton’s letter was dated January 30, 2017 and was copied to a number of people including the President of Dominica, members of Parliament in Dominica, CARICOM Heads of Government, UN Secretary General, Iranian Ambassador to the Caribbean, Commonwealth Secretary General, among others.

It demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister in the interest of “national salvation,” saying his “actions and associations with international racketeers, money launderers and fugitives from justice who pose continuing threats to global security and peace” has plunged Dominica into a severe crisis of confidence.

The letter also stated that the Prime Minister has since 2004 presided over a “corrupt” Economic Citizenship Program “that has compromised the global security architecture against money laundering and the financing of terrorism.”

It also spoke about the alleged sale of diplomatic passports “under the table to a band of international rogues and vagabonds, many of whom have been arrested for international crimes while holding Dominican diplomatic passports.”

But in response, Lawrence said Linton and his party (United Workers Party; UWP) are being aided by “foreign agents who seem to share a common interest in manufacturing facts and destroying the country.”

“Alternatively, the misinformation and smears now being published by third parties are a direct result of your reckless and malicious utterances and actions, and those of (sic) members of your party,” the response stated.

The letter stated that all the allegations outlined by Linton are false.

It also mentioned the matter surrounding Dominican ex-diplomat Ali Reza Ziba Halat Monfared, an Iranian, who was arrested on allegations of being involved in his country biggest-ever corruption scandal.

“Our client instructs that he specifically denies your allegations in relation to Ali Reza Ziba Halat Monfared,” the letter stated. “It is beyond question you are fully aware of the fact that due diligence was in fact conducted on Monfared and his family by Bishops Services.”

The letter also said that Linton will soon be hearing from attorneys representing the Prime Minister.

“In the circumstances, we have been instructed to collate all of your reckless and dishonest statements and publications, and to proceed against you forthwith with whatever proceedings are considered necessary including civil proceedings on the footing of aggravated damages,” it said.

You must stand strong and stand with dignity for the Dominican people. We must stand with dignity. Don’t take any kind of crap from the speaker of the house. We know that this parliament was burnt down before and if the parliament continues to operate this way ladies and gentlemen it will be burnt down again by the people of Dominica. We have to stand strong. When duty calls for danger be never lacking near. Ladies and gentlemen today is the day we have to stand up, we have to stand up for our freedom. Ladies and gentlemen we have to stop the rot right now. Stand up, stand up Dominica.

Someone please play the Hunter Calypso that is the theme song of the Next Level DNO could you please get the song and put it here for us please?

Is Linton serious asking the PM to resign? Tell Linton win a general if he want the PM out of office. That is the only way our PM is leaving the P.M.O. He has to work for it hard and fair if he wants it. Not by over throwing the Government. Dominica is a peace loving country and that is how we want it to remain.

    The PM stays thank you!!

Linton is free to leave if he does not like how we the people vote in Dominica by exercising our constitutional right. We do not appreciate anyone taking away our democratic right.

This month is Black History Month. We celebrate the strives Black people have made including to vote in a general election and NO black person who knows their history from the days of slavery should try and take away that right from another black person. Especially in a peaceful country like Dominica.

    Why should he resign?
PM Skerrit has proven himself time and time again to the Dominican populace. It would be remiss of me to allow his efforts to go unnoticed… just look at the YES WE CARE program, the attainment of Universal Secondary Education and Universal Access to Early Childhood Education, the National Employment Programme, the School Bus, fees waived for anyone under 18 and over 60 at the hospital, the scholarship programmes, housing assistance programme, assistance programme for those are affected during disasters, the national abbatoir, the Petro Caribe Gas, schools at Grand Bay, Newtown, Portsmouth, Salybia, among others, extension of the Dominica Grammar School and others, water projects in Giraudel, Eggleston, Salisbury etc, the road to the now Douglas Charles airport and expansion of the airport, Soufriere and Pointe Michel roads, highways from Roseau to Portsmouth and the airport and the many other road works! These are only a few I can recall offhand. Skerrit…

Oh My! The kind of ill informed nonsense that I see on this post. It seems a lot of money is being wasted in our education system as I assume that most of these posters passed through Secondary School.

In our system, the Prime Minister, any Prime Minister, remains in his post as long as he “commands the support of the majority of elected members in Parliament”. Those who point out that Patrick John did not resign are correct. What happened with him is that he simply lost his majority support in Parliament and therefore could no longer be Prime Minister.

Skerrit can resign whenever he wants as Edward Le Blanc did in 1974, but he need not resign if he does not want to do so as long as the majority of elected members still support him. Unlike PJ he has not lost favour with the people to the point of mass demonstrations and killing of civilians. We may not totally like him but he still commands the majority in the House and in the country and until that changes he serves his term.

The leader of the opposition, Mr. Linton, has announced to Dominicans that Tuesday, February 10th will be D Day. That is the day he expects with the help of Dominicans a massive demonstration will be held seeking the resignation of the Skeritt led Administration. I would like to draw the Prime Minister’s attention to the following notice, as stated on DNO, the US Embassy to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States is pleased to announce that a Consular Officer will visit Dominica from Monday, February 13 to Thursday , February 16. According to Mr. Linton, the demonstration will go on until the Prime Minister resigns. I hope the Prime Minister is aware of the bad press and security problems that will be facing the country. Maybe he should meet with Mr. Linton and arrive at some kind of solution. I hope good sense will prevails.

Skeritt should not be compared to Patrick John because during Patrick John\’s saga the majority of Dominicans was against him. Today, as you all should know the majority of Dominicans support Skeritt. UWP and its supporters are out numbered by approximately four to one; that is not the right ingredient to achieve what Linton is calling for.Linton can jump high or low; what he is calling for is unattainable at the present. The majority of Dominicans will not go to the strrets on Linton\’s behalf. As far as these Dominicans are concerned Linton is an opportunist so they will not heed his call. Copyiny these organizations on the letter which he sent to Skeritt does not mean anything. These organizations do not believe in gossip and innuendos without any proof. Linton needs to bring his evidence on the table in plain view or else he is wasting his time and energy.

    • February 2, 2017

So what was Skeritt when it was alleged that he went behind the back of the then PM Pierro Charles and met with Lap Seng in Barbados about replacing our affiliation with Taiwan with that of the PRC. That was treachery and treasonous not to mention opportunistic.

It is really disturbing that you DLP slaves just gloss over these things just like you all want us all to gloss over the fact that a number of nefarious characters have been caught in the possession of our passports.

Ever since he was given that post, he is nothing but a thorn, a troublemaker and always on the warpath. He is no good for the country. Furthermore, that man’s heart is full of hatred for the PM. She is not wrong. It is true that in Dominica’s democracy the majority speaks. And why is Linton seeking outside help to solve issues of an independent nation, whose actions do not affect the rest of the world (financially, at least) to the point of resignation? What’s the purpose of this? He expects them to come and help him get Skerrit out? I must say that he is doing his job….opposing. And I commend him for that, for informing the citizens of the nastiness of the government….using the proceeds from the program to benefit themselves and not serving the needs of the people as they were sworn to do. It is now the responsibility of the citizens to wise up and act accordingly…read, get informed, stop relying on nonsensical information and tactics, and be strong enough to realize if the government is corrupt and take the necessary actions at the polls in the next election. In the meantime, Skerrit is going nowhere, until he is forced out by the massive. Use another method Linton.

All members of parliament have a diplomatic passport (incl. Lennox Linton).
however, that does not preclude one from being subject to the laws of their own country, or other countries for that matter. You may not be prosecuted but the receiving country may demand that you be withdrawn or expelled. The only person in Dominica enjoying immunity from prosecution is the President and members of parliament for anything said in the House. the Speaker may demand them to withdraw and apologise and for their comments to be struck from the record, even ask them to leave but they can not be prosecuted whilst in the House.

My opinion is that Dr. Skerrit has no option but to consider his position with extreme prejudice.

Here is what is most likely to play out:-

    1) Dr. Skerrit in very short time (say within 6 months from now) offers to resign as leader for the good of the party;
    2) Barron gets to be PM and promised to clean things out – no general election is offered
    3) Dr. Skerrit leaves Dominica for good
    4) Barron, as the baglady, makes sure that no lawsuit, or criminal investigation gets to Dr. Skerrit
    5) Dr. Skerrit, the billionaire, rewards his loyal supporters and becomes the prime undercover agent (with huge commissions) for the sale of Dominica passports.

This will come to pass in more, or less the same, or highly similar order.

Baron cannot be PM because she is not an elected member. The Constitution declares that the Prime Minister, The Minister of Finance and The Leader of The Oppsoition MUST be elected members. People, know your Constitution before you write.

Yes Africo, our people should know their constitution as least as well as their bible because it is crucial. BUT this does not make Skerrit a holy man brother. Hitler had laws to prosecute and terminate minorities, South Africa had apartheid, all legal. brother.

It is very easy to make Barron a member, very, very easy with the kind of money Colonel Skerrit has :)

”Absolutely no intention of resigning”; Have we not heard that statement from a DLP Prime-minister before? The office that you presently hold is not yours for keeps sir, if History is a teacher then there a lessons to be learnt.-

Leave the PM in peace to perform his elected duties. Some of you as Lennox are not peaceful. You have been harassing him for too long.

Skeritt has, today, confirmed your resignation. With the alleged banking situation heading towards Dominica like a hurricane, you chose to arrest a Doctor for a statement he made over two years ago. This is not only madness, but political suicide. It is going to be interesting to see what kind of magic you perform to get out of that one. Linton must be the luckiest politician in the Caribbean to have been given a Prime Minister’s office so easily.

Ok then time will tell as Mr. Labad use to say. Also that bad man in the Gambia or Duvalier in Haiti , or Mobutu in the Congo had no intention of reigning neither- but time will tell Mr. Lawrence.

We have seen that movie played before!!!!!

Dominica belongs to Dominicans 0 not to Roosevelt Skerrit Lennox Lawrence and the ‘rest’.

Or worse still Mike. I remember Nikolai Ceaucescu of Romania say the same thing and look what happened to him. I don’t wish that for any one but you never know what can happen.

It is obvious that you support Linton and you will be on his side defending and supporting him. Linton has projected on many occasions that he does not deserve this defense and support. You supporters are blind people who cannot see what he represents.

  52. ” the salacious misinformation and scandalous lies manufactured and repeated and circulated by you, members of your political party and Mr. Gabriel Christian,” a section of the letter reads.”

Okay, let us be certain, if you Lawrence accuse Lennox Linton of lying, and we believe you: we would difficulties of Gabriel Christian distorting the truth, or lying as you claim.

Be reminded this is a very small world, a lie told my Christian even in Dominica can him his credibility in the United States, where he own and operate a law firm in the State of Maryland, one lie form him could cost him his entire reputation and low practice. It not like in Dominica where people are involved in crimes and they continue to go to court posing as lawyer!

Once one become an officer of the court in America, it a different ball game, and believe you any need on Gabriel even to his activities in Dominica cannot be hidden. So, I doubt he would be ignorant to get caught in a tangled web in Dominica.,

Pure rubbish Fancisco. Wait for when Trump will call you, We go see where you gonna hide!

    • Let me make this clear:

I intended to say a lie told even in Dominica can harm him “Gabriel Christian ” credibility in the United States. I also intended to say one lie from him can cost him his law practice; and not “low practice.” I intended to write “It’s not like in Dominica where people are involved crimes, and continue to go court posing as lawyer! Anymore errors found perhaps it will not be too difficult to figure out what I intended to convey!

Why is it that Skerrit is COMMANDING all of them to go say something for him now nah…Later today you all will see Johno,Justina,Darroux that was in Malaysia, etc…What is it that Skerrit knows that we do not know?I know that rogues have our Diplomatic Passport, but is it that there are more Monfarreds to be heard of SOON,SOON ,SOON??In the absense of answers, we have to speculate.Skerrit why is it that Monfarred had our diplomatic passport?Skerrit was Monfarred living on island, while being sought by INTERPOL?Skerrit did Iran ask for Monfarreds extradition during the time he lived in Dominica?? PLEASE REPLY SIR!

    • February 3, 2017

That is the problem %, you just write without knowing facts. Mofared was not wanted by INTERPOL he was wanted by Iran. Making up stories is not evidence.

      • Malgraysa
        February 3, 2017

Interpol is an international organisation of which both Iran and Dominica are members. While it is true that Interpol agents can not effect arrests themselves, a member like Iran can issue a request via them to another member (Dominica in this instance) for the apprehension of a fugitive from justice. I think in the Monfared case our police authority failed miserably and seriously questions their immunity from political interference.
