Charles Savarin officially elected as president

President elect Charles Savarin
President elect Charles Savarin

Charles Savarin is the new president of Dominica.

He was elected by 19 members of parliament on Monday morning.

The United Workers Party (UWP) did not attend the sitting.

Absent from the government’s side were Ian Douglas, Julius Timothy, Ronald Toulon and Tammy Jean Jacques.

The UWP had said that Savarin’s nomination is unconstitutional but Attorney General, Levi Peter, argued the nomination and election are within the bounds of the constitution.

Savarin resigned last week as a government minister and senator.

He will be inaugurated on Tuesday, October 1.

I don’t think some people understand why most Dominicans did not want mr.Savarin as president. It’s not because he is not able to do the job (to be proven). there fear majority of Dominicans have is how fair and balance will he be. He was part of the labour party govenment for years, what make us think he will go against the prime miniter at all. No matter what the prime minister do right now, he will always have the president on his side good or bad the government will be supported by the president. That wont be a good thing and that is most Dominicans fear. I am an independent and there are many good things the PM has done for Dominica but there a bad ones as well. We need a neutral person as president and not someone who can be used as a puppet. No disrespect to MR.Savarin but he can potencially become one. We should all suport the PM when he do good and let him know when he do bad but it’s not so in Dominica. For some people he can do no wrong and for others he can do no right, that’s total rubbish, we should all be open minded an neutral (independent). I think the Pm should forget about how the opposition acted and listen to the voice of the people on this one, not that politician in Dominca do listen, but this one is hard for people who understand what’s at steak. For what it is, I do hope all goes good.

By my calculation 89% of the comments here do not support Savarin for President of Dominica. But sadly this rejection cannot affect a man with the guts that he possesses. This man, you may recall, spent over a week in maternity ward at the Princess Margaret Hospital with mothers and babies for company. Yes Dominicans he was in the maternity ward and he knows I saw him there.

If is one thing, that PM know how to make Dominicans spend their money and for him to collect VAT!!!!

That topic going and rage on for a few months on the talk shows and to everyone that call and buy a top up it going and have a 15% VAT for d government. The talking industry , the blogging industry and the social media industry making d government collect plenty money.

So now if PM get little Intel that Taiwan give UWP some money for their campaign and he decide to make all you start spend – pay for bus ride like what happen on Sunday , buy T-shirt, buy drinks, buy chicken, give supporters money to pay for light and internet so computer can use to vote on DNO plenty times in a day and other like my good friends that coming all your meetings dem for d rum and d party and you suddenly stop d flow of d money you know Dominicans going and kick hells on all you. And you know is that all you going and do. And all you going and start paranoid and have recorder under people house in village to know if they be for all you for real. lol

All you hand bound to open and open early!! Those lawsuits by Tony going and make all u on d back foot wait , mark my word.

Like Charlo had say in 2000: Workers by buy ; Workers can sell , but Workers cannot win Charlo !!!

DNO ask Mr. James how does he feel after asking Senator Savarin to follow him out of the house when he was making his farewell speech as UWP leader? Boy they really say careful what you wish/ask for … cause you will just get it. You seeee where Charlo is now Mr. James? Why you go and ask d man to come out of d house – de Pink House. Look now de man in d Big White House in time for d Tourist season that PM say will be a Tourist attraction!!!! Way papa.

In my early teens, I was a student at DGS when Mr. Savarin gave a speech that became part of his efforts to remove Patrick John from power because of corruption and John’s attempts to become Dominica’s supreme ruler. We all know of the 45 day strike, the subsequent attack on the crowd of Demonstrators at government headquarters, leaving Phillip Timothy dead and many others injured, the removal of PJ from power, the attack on police headquarters that again resulted in death and many injuries. In my memory, that was the last time government in Dominica was involved in raising arms against the population, and yes, Charlo was in the middle of the whole thing.

I am reading about guns and snipers on roof tops in DA and that makes me sick to the stomach. And again, Charlo is in the middle of it. Are we blind? Have we allowed our offspring to become that ignorant? Are we so far gone that we are embracing the return of our country’s worse nightmares? What’s even more frightening, in 1979 there was the Army and the Police Force on opposing sides. Today, there is one armed force behind one supreme ruler. Government guns pointed at an unarmed population can lead to nothing but disaster.

The 47 days strike would not have been a success without the support of the general civil service body and the CSA legal adviser at the time. The strike was for a just cause. Why is Savarin the only one bearing blame of whatever happened. Had the law which was averted been passed today there would not be a DNO. Think about that.

  32. flower
    September 30, 2013

Charles Savarin may have led the 47 days strike but he would not have the power to do it without the support of the civil servants and his legal adviser at the time. Why should he be the only one to bear the burden of what happened. The strike was for a just cause. Let us move forward and let bygones be bygones.

..Bygones my rass.. didn’t you hear him back Tony months ago live on the air for a “BUCKET BRIGRADE” of stones to reign down on Dominicans? Charles Saverin is not fit for the presidency. He most certainly had help, but he was the agitator, instigator for Freedom Party to come in. My issue with this man is that over the years he continues to echo violence, impatience, intolerance for any other view than his and his crew. He is NOT what the Constitution demands of a man in the Presidency period.

Well it has happened!!!! And what’s the lesson…… young people ……..this is the lesson taught here today. You do not have to be honest, honourable, educated, qualified or know how to pronounce words ending in tion or sion to be the president of our beloved state and also receive the highest honour in the land.
All you have to do is be Charles Savrin!!! and of course associate yourself with people who will dictate to people of Dominica that you get into the positions that you want regardless of how immoral and unpopular the decision may be.

Yes young people welcome to DOMINICA’S POLITICS 101. I hope you enjoyed your lesson!!!!!

How ridiculous can we get? Based on the comments I have read, there is no justification to oppose the Presidency of His Excellency Charles Angelo Savrin.

All I have read is Political talking Points. H.E. Charles Savarin stands out as the most powerful and popular Dominica out of political office in the history of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

To be so powerful and popular outside of political office, one has to be able unify, not a divide people. This is an undisputed fact of life.

All other theory is just political machinations.

That’s just wrong. The president cannot resign as a minister last week and be elected president this week. This is not Russia! And I am a neutral here too. I always speak and support when the govt do good. That move is literally a disrespect to Dominicans. The president is not exactly as important as the prime minister, in fact, I don’t even really know what the president does or why we have one, but I do know that this here is dead wrong. I did not support Linton being a journalist with political allegiance, and I do not support a president who is blatantly biased and has allegiance to the ring party, obviously.

Savarin hit the highest note in his singing for Skerrit, he got his reward, so those so-called intelligent people without integrity, you know what to do in order to get money/power/position. Dear Mr Prime Minister and Cabinet : if your intention was to hurt your people YOU HAVE SUCCEEDED beyond your wildest expectations; Many of us had moved on – but the hurts have been reopened

I remember the hospital in particular – those who died in all wards; mothers in labour; this m…ster had no compassion not even for the sick who had done him no harm ‘THE NURSES WILL NOT WORK’

The HOSPITAL without lights people uncared for rotting alive; 47 days without attention – relatives blockaded from coming to Roseau AND I remember patients administering medication to patients too much too much

you who were not there even if you let your imagination runs wild it will not even be half the story

I have heard stories of this stand off and the spin on it and what i held onto as a young person was the courage of people standing together in unity for what they wanted. NEver considered the consequences thereof and even so, i thought it was a matter of . few days. Sad. I am so ashamed we traded our humanity for something of fleeting value, money. Seems to me the year has changed but not much else. Praying for change. As matter of fact, i declare that God is going to bring a halt to the evil forces of darkness which have been permitted to roam and operate so freely in our land. I declare that every leader who abuses his/her authority in oppressing their peoples be violently removed from their self indulgent seats of authority. I declare than in their place GOD is going to raise up leaders who have a heart after his and compassion for their peoples. I declare a shift in the atmosphere over Dominica and with the authority that has been given to me to make this proclamation that it is done not by might, nor by power but by the Spirit of the Living God and in the name of Jesus Christ his son.

are the workers supporters blind or something…dominica is so much better than it was befoe, skerrit built a stadium, night landing airport, state college, west coast highway and plus many more roads around the island, he sent allu children to study under scholarships! Skerrit brought change to this country, the UWP does not like china and venezuela, there only friend is taiwan, when UWP was in power taiwan gave them a prone farm. What can a prone farm to for us? Now when labour came in power they made relations with china and they gave us proper infrastructure that cant come close to prone farms. The UWP loves to sho off their stupid ways, Lennox just blasting his mouth on radio and they put him as leaderm but claudius sanford and ronney isidore just to name a few have been working their backsides off for the UWP for how many years but they still did not put one of them in power, but they put a guy tht never went up for elections, does not have a seat in parliament and has no qualifications to be leader of the party…this party is not ready yet, vote DLP!

If you Oregon to comment at least be a good advocate of your views whether for or against. All these violence and negativity is drawing more stagnation to the country. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but for the love of your country and reputation as a nation stop tearing and bringing each other down. What legacy are we leaving for the next generation? What we do or say don’t just affect now but also the future. SO please try expressing views that are meaningful and uplifting. Life goes on deal with it. Decissions are made deal with it. I AM DOMINICAN.

i do not live in Dominica – I do not feel what the so called masses are feeling if I were to believe everything I read here on DNO.

What I do know, is that the same CONSTITUTION, gave powers to both parties.

What i do see, is that 1 party used those powers and the other didn’t

    Which is which?

I agree that Labour must go, but i find myself asking – and make room for who?

talk, talk, talk never will get Dominica forward.

You have to be ready to strike, and strike while it’s hot. Dont wait for your opponent to give you options without any solutions of your own.

Effective leadership also lies in the ability to be PREPARED and expect the unexpected and deal with it with expediency.

this “Constitution” that keeps getting name dropped is not even being utilised efectively by the party complaining.

my question is – where the was your nomination?

3 nominees later and not 1 opion presented.

Change is a must – but at what cost?

Now peopleare stuck with Svarin becuase you failed to DEFEND by puttign up a nominee to show us that you were trying – instead you only: Opose, Opose, Opose

    • Nac Vibes

Maybe if you educated yourself of the constitution you would understand the opposition’s stand point.

        October 1, 2013

        That’s what i did FOOL!

Goes to show how blinded you people are that anyone who questiosn your mighty Opposition – you take offense.

I know the law, i study the law – it’s all about interpretation of what you are reading.

I’m pretty sure that one fo the first rules is being prepared.

then again – i am tlking to Dominicans who tend to talk out of their asses and not think for themselves. I’ts all about my way- if not what i think thaten you’re an idiot.

Guess what… you think all the idaspora people who sit on the computer and spew political nonsense are gonna leave their land of milk nd honey and coome save you gusy in DCA?

        think again!

many of them can’t even “bachay” a plane becuase they can’t come home, but still they sit and write nonsense about the Constitution yet – they UNDERSTAND NOT what they read.

what is the point of the Opposition? If i may ask you oh smart one?
I’m pretty sure that the Opposiiton knew the COnstitution and knew that the term was coming up so they should have been prepared because they knew they werent going to agree with King Skerritt.

so what’s their take on that same Constitution that makes proviisons for before the ter expires?

it’s like beating a dead horse with you folks… only opinion that matters is yours.

but guess what – the OPPOSITION SUCKS! they have no ambition, no determination, no PLAN

Skerritt sucks but his playing field is more advantageous than theirs- it’s like the battle of dumb and dumber

President Charles Savarin, congratultions again and sleep well tonight. Get your required amount of rest so that you will feel well rested for your inauguration tomorrow, October 1st. I visualize it will be a strenuous or busy day for you. This will be a great day of fond memories.
Tomorrow, the Catholic Church will celebrate the Feast Day of St. Teresa Lisieux, The Little Flower of Carmel, of The Child Jesus who served our Lord in holiness in her life. Her life story is documented in a book which is entitled, “St. Theresa Lisieux – The Story of a Soul”.
October 1st also commences the month of The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy Rosary. This special devotion of the Catholic Church will end on October 31st.
God knows we need prayers and more prayers. These celebrations of the Holy Ones whom He made perfect are not without reason. By honoring them as God expects of us, they will assist us in our pilgrimage of life to walk the narrow road to heavenly eternity and even shield us from evil.
We are fortunate that we have them. They did not have anyone but themselves to prod them on to godly perfection. However, God was with them. They are capable of assisting us in the strife. Praise and thanks be to God!
I will remember you at Church and other fellow Dominicans that God will bless everyone and protect them and shield Dominica from unrest which contribute to lack of peace. God’s blessing and peace!

The worst is still to come, mark my words!
Today 19 people in the House took teir pieces of silver and betrayed the principles of their own party, not caring or not realising that by doing so they signed their own political demise.
Roosevelt Skerrit has demonstrated that he is no respecter of the Presidency and when his latest acolyte, Charles Savarin will help to propel him into a position of supreme power, those who ticked their ballot paper today will find out how dispensable they are, discarded by their exalted leader and shunned by the constituaents, who were persuaded to vote for them in the first place.I think in particular of the blessed memory of the late Pierre Charles betrayed by those, who professed to love him most. But do not despair. Man and his vanity are perisbabler but hope lives forever and Dominica will pass through this vale of tears too. May God salvage and protect our beautiful land.

bloggers-of-doom-and-gloom, let not your heart be troubled, my father in heaven will not let your prophecies come to pass for he is an Elohim of love and peace, so I pray, Father, I thank thee for your love, mercy and grace that you have bestowed on me and pray that you shower the same on my country and countrymen. Let the hate that they carry in their hearts vanish like the morning mist and replace it with peace and love to their brothermen like you replace the dark clouds with sunshine. Let all the wishes and prophesies for doom and gloom disappear from their tongues and guide my beautiful nation to properity.
Continue to direct the government so that this fair land will enjoy peace and development.
Almighty Father, I pray too for the opposition, that they will also prosper for all of us live in this dear land.
Father, please forgive the UWP leader for the venom and hate that spills from his tongue against our leaders and institution. Let his words become an instrument of thy peace.

Boycotting is not the answer, voting against would have been more effective. The opposition and those from the party should have attended and voted against. If they had gone and voted then who knows they may have given others the courage to vote alongside them and defeated the vote. That is constitutional.Stop boycotting and go and vote against. Votes count.

Lennox Linton was a Freedom party supporter and a lot of those present UWP. They were all there supporting Charles Severin during the August 1978 upheaval against the ruling Labour Party. It was right for all of them then, how comes Charles is such a bad person now because of that era. They all supported him and actions taken by the Unions and the Freedom Party. What a bunch of hypocrites and opportunists!! Charles was proclaimed a Hero during those days. Freedom supporters and members had better shut their mouths now.

Charles Savarin is the new president-elect of Dominica.

He was the only nominated candidate for the election of president and received 19 favourable votes from all government members present.

The United Workers Party (UWP) did not attend the sitting.Absent from the government’s side were Ian Douglas, Julius Timothy, Ronald Toulon and Tammy Jean Jacques.

The UWP had said that Savarin’s nomination is unconstitutional but Attorney General, Levi Peter, argued the nomination and election are within the confines of the constitution.

Savarin resigned last week as a government minister and senator.

He will be sworn in on Wednesday, October 2, 2013.

    • September 30, 2013

Not only Skerrit/Savarin must go also Levi Peters I hope no one is surprised to read Peters comments a man who was brought down by the GOVT and who haven got the people of D’ica interest as a priority but we have to take what we are getting because Tiyani Behanzin had warned us and we all turn a deft ear .
I dont support either parties but I support the people and the Constitution and the rule of Law and I cannot see myself standing to attention for Savarin as long as he is in that position. D’icans ask Skerrit what does Savarin have over him remember Savarin didnt run or got elected as a minister in any of the elections, on the other hand I call on D’icans to vote out all ministers of the Govt because they allowed what happen today and when Savarin drope down it will be on their heads .
The power of the people is more than the power of the minsters .
Savarin will not be in that position for 5 years not in his life I call on D’icans to boycut all ceremonies that he will be presiding over, young peple take a stand for your Constitution and rule of Law and for DOMINICA

Yes there are police officers manning the roads (approx. 30). The road block is no different to when traffic is diverted for road repairs. Foot traffic is still flowing freely. We walked pass the officers, they were polite. We did not feel intimidated.

I do agree it should be changed. The opposition should not have such a great say. If dual citizenship is accepted in Dominica, every Dominican who resides out of the country will benefit from it. After all, once a Dominican-born with a Dominican baptismal certificate and a passport, always one. Nothing or no one should erase that.
Even you and other critics should agree on this for it will benefit those whom you know, government critics or not who reside abroad, some of whom have returned home. They have much to contribute to D/ca politically and will be pleased about this move that they are not treated as outsiders who were not born in Dominica. It is time for this change.

Rosie’s anniversary is in early October 1st, the Feast of St. Theresa Lisieux – of the Child Jesus.
I recall that day Sunday when I was getting ready to go to the Holy Mass and celebration in her honor when someone telephoned me to give me the sad news of his passing. I pray he is in God’s care. He did much good.
I must telephone his sister and her husband tonight who resides in Ontario. I usually do especially on his anniversary. I have been so busy that it slipped my mind. Thanks for the reminder.
Charles inauguration will take place on October 1st. What a coincidence.
The special annual Holy Mass and celebration in honor of St. Teresa will be held early tomorrow evening at the Church of which she is the Patron Saint. If I do, I will surely remember Rosie in prayer during the Mass. In fact, I will also remember him in prayer, especially tomorrow from morning…
I will also remember Charles that God will grant him health and strength in his new portfolio as President.

I wonder how many of us at the age of sixty nine or seventy would receive an opportunity like Charles Savarin and turn it down. We heard Skeritt said that the Presidency is ceremonial . The man will be receiving in excess of ten thousand dollars a month and plenty of bed rest. He does not have get up from his bed to go to an office where he has to climb many stairs to attend work or meetings. The man is going to have security galore, chauffeur driven and a brand new Palace. Subject to correction, I understood the President’s Palace has a swimming pool, what better way to spend your twilight years.

Politics is different. There is no comparison to disobeying parents. You can disagree but you do not have to be vindictive. This is hate and creating discord, disunity and lack of peace. It also includes not thinking and weighing out matters and following those who create discord. Some of you fail to recognize the truth.

One of the first steps is to put the “decision makers” (judges, presidents, etc) in place. But we Must let this government know that WE THE PEOPLE are the decision makers. And we will make our decision very clear come election day.

If only some of you would do something for Dominica and for others, you would not have time to be idle, to be negative and critical. It would make Dominica a better place to live and more progressive.

To Mr.Savarin I would like to say congratulations to you on your position as being the next President of the beautiful country Dominica. Some of us have forgotten the contribution you have nade for Dominica and Dominicans. They tend to dwwell on the past but they have forgotten the road that Dominica was threading in 1979. Being fromPortsmouth I am proud to day that Portsmouth will have had two Presidents since Dominica became Independent and we are loking forward to having a Prime Minister from Portsmouth. This is my two cents. Mrs. Clara Savarin welcome as First Lady of Dominica what a great one you are.

You are pre occupied and obsessed about your village’s position in the country rather than the greater good.

While i respect your constitutional right ( and the struggle is about our constitution) to support the chosen one, you might want to reason a bit more before deciding.

How on God’s earth is this man going to unite the country.

I am just so concerned that the first official or madien speech from this so called new president will be the declaration of a State of Emergency when the people had enough and start to agitate.

That just shows where your mind is at. Take defeat like a man. Exercise your democratic rights at the polls. That is where you will find out who the people are. Stop trying to fool the ignorant ones.

I really don’t care about the politics- but what I do care about is how the country is being managed and our definition of integrity and great governance. Nothing being done on this island is done by the books. Are we living in a communist state? Actions speak louder than words, therefore, by the actions of this present administration- I can boldly say that we are being managed by a group of political gangsters who do not respect the people and are very insecure in the way that they control the polities that the island is supposed to be governed by. We need a change, any change is good. People are tired, they are under duress stress… no jobs … no money … no smiles … no love. I am weary … my energy level is too low now. Change is a must!!

Seriously? DNO I am surprised that you are publishing comments such as this one and others which do nothing but incite violence. Just remember PMH will not be able to handle the casualties – they hardly have mercurochrome.

      Please be more responsible!!!

Dominicans, please be cool. You will achieve nothing by violence except more hardship on yourselves. Exercise your right at the ballot box – it is a more powerful way to effect change if that’s what you want. Peace out!
