DLP sweeps Soufriere by-election

Charles is now the new MP for the Soufriere constituency
Charles is now the new MP for the Soufriere constituency

The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has emerged victorious in the Soufriere by-election.

The DLP’s Denise Charles raked in 1,342 votes while her rival Higgs Adams of the United Workers Party got 560 votes, according to preliminary results.

The win came as no surprise for the DLP which poured resources into the constituency in the run-up to the polls.

Sensing an early victory, Charles paraded early through the streets of Pointe Michel with supporters even before preliminary results were out.

She said her win is a sign of togetherness over hate.

“It’s a new day in the Soufriere Constituency,” she said.

DNO will continue to monitor the results and will publish further information as it becomes available.

  1. @ Telemaque \”The only way Skerrit can loose an election in Dominica is if God take him out\”,

First of all are you not the one who is grounded in the belief that God has nothing to do with Politics, so why are claiming His interference pertaining to the defeat of PM Skerrit? Are you not saying that since 15 years ago the devil has claimed the victory, and God\’s time is coming for Him to claim the defeat? So where is the substance in that idea of yours.

Secondly, that is the kind of contradiction which you feed to the young and learning people at home, while you give them all sorts of derogatory names. Your belief and that of your fellow UWPites is nothing but futility. To claim that the devil is keeping PM Skerrit Power is the claim that the devil has a fed to your empty and carnal mind.

You are assaying that the devil authority against God. Once again, how can that be?

My people do not be troubled. Did you’ll expect anything different. Dominicans more so Labourites care about nothing. From the remarks of mothers, who support Labour party. “The child was in her business”, “she wanted it”. Lord have mercy on all of us. Because we will feel your wrath sooner than later. When we have brushed aside morals for political gain. So you’ll expected a different result? Labourites have no dignity and I make no apologies for saying that. Pastors and Preists have been bought and they refuse to preach the word as they ought too. Society is not going to get better. As a matter of fact Dominica is going downhill and it won’t get better until we do the right thing. Stop worshipping one man. Stop accepting what is wrong because the majority is doing it. Put God first and not no politician until then we shall see the negative downturn of our country

  3. It’s rather difficult to understand why some people are getting so worked up about the bi-election results. First and foremost, in places such as Grandbay, Portsmouth and the SOUFRIERE CONSTITUENCY there is no hope for any other political party besides the blessed Dominica Labour Party. In these particular areas on Island the vote against other parties is not personal or vindictive in any way, it simply says WE LOVE THE LABOUR PARTY AND WE WILL VOTE LABOUR UNTIL WE DIE no matter what! In more recent times, these areas have become so entrenched in their loyalty to their party that the presentation of issues, policies, information, improvements and morality has no relevance to them. They proudly proclaim that they are red red red…and that is what is of the utmost importance to them. Elections in these areas are not about providing effective representation, it is rather about “us against them”. Thus, the Country must remain divided!

    • Furthermore, let us be real and face the facts … the United Workers Party presented a recycled candidate that was rejected by that very constituency merely 18 months ago. A candidate that is widely rumoured to be openly g…let’s just say a bit untraditional with his preferences. Then, the UWP goes into a Labour stronghold and based their campaign on the allegations against their beloved former MP. A wise politician armed with the knowledge that issues are basically irrelevant to voters in Labour strongholds might opt to employ a different strategy. I dare to ask the party leader, Honourable Lennox Linton, if speaking truth to power has worked or will work as a campaign strategy. The fact is, the Prime Minister literally hates you Mr. linton, and if their PM hates you so do ALL loyal Labourites. There is NOTHING you can say or strategize that will resonate with die-hard Labourites. The UWP lost and will ALWAYS lose in Soufriere!

dno all you just a waste of time news medium. you support who you want but please dont make it glaring and blatant. What you mean when you said poured resources. All parties do it and never you forget dirty politics started in 1995 when workers took over and start giving favors for votes, but its just a pity they didn’t last long so you guys pretending like you forget. When workers took over is like a revenge and i remember eddison saying clearly its our time and his famous first independent speech. Pretenders and hypocrit

The UWP supporters knows the recipe for winning elections buy the people rum and handouts that’s all it takes if that is true why won’t they do it? instead of giving Linton THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO PAY FOR HIS LIES if they profess to be the only intelligent Dominican how on earth can they allow an uneducated man to make them part with their money. The question must be asked who is stupid ?

We do not want to buy votes because it is illegal and immoral. The UWP stands for other values and if it turns out that we can only win a election if we copy Skerrits style than I’d rather not win an election!

They won’t do it because they don’t have access to the treasury and investors like the DLP has, it comes with power genius. Who ever is in power at the time has larger access to funds. I know you’re a laborite but use your head.

    2014: DLP 1326 votes; UWP: 822 votes

    2016: DLP 1342 votes (16 votes increase); UWP: 560 votes (262 decrease).

DLP did had a marginal increase over the last election. UWP supporters maybe just were hopeless because the DLP was already in power and did not care about the issues. SAD.

I’m praying for a place i once called my home because with all this nonsense soon there will be NO MORE DOMINICA. Prayer warriors lets rally the power of prayers is what Dominica needs to have any sustenance through the next years!!!
Rally with me as we say this Prayer:
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, by the power of his cross, his blood and his resurrection, I take authority over all curses, hexes, spells, voodoo practices, witchcraft assignments, satanic rituals, incantations and evil wishes that have been sent my way, or have passed down the generational bloodline. I break their influence over my life by the power of the risen Lord Jesus Christ, and I command these curses to go back to where they came from and be replaced with a blessing.
I ask forgiveness for and renounce all negative inner vows and agreements that I have made with the enemy, and I ask that you Lord Jesus Christ release me from any bondage they may have held in me. I claim your shed blood .

I am waiting to see when the Leader of the Opposition and the UWP will do the right thing for once in their life and congratulate the new Parliamentary Representative for the Soufriere Constituency Denise Charles and the PM.

The last General Election the DLP run with the slogan “Leadership is everything” we can see what a Good Leadership is and the Prime Minister and the DLP must be congratulated for a job well done.

What a magnificent campaign ran by the Dominica Labour Party. I have no doubt that she will give effective representation.

If nothing else; I really thought that the people would stand on the side of the children of Dominica and make a clear statement to the government that we condemn the gov’t of Dominica or any political party supporting child abuse of any kind. Make no mistake people; you didn’t just vote for a political party. You have destroyed the rights of a child. I have two children and i am disappointed. DLP may have won the battle but the war continues. Yes the war against blatant, bold face bribery and treating. Those 500 plus voters who voted against this malice should stand proud. The 1000 plus who voted against, means a lot more work needs to be done to educate. The DLP is aided and abetted by people in high and low places so the fight for liberation is never going to be easy. The public servants who facilitated the distribution of resources through our treasury shame on you. Remember no LPO no government cheques carries the signature of a minister therefore you will be held accountable whether in the earthly judgement or most worrying the higher judgement to come. Yes the millions that were distributed to people under disguise of assistance that was not budgeted for, that did not follow prudent financial procedure yet you all facilitated the process and was being done while line ministries are struggling to buy supplies because poor cash flow? God be merciful on you all.

Nonsense, Lennox is just too unpopular with Dominicans. I personally have a lot of respect for Lennox but this is not about Lennox it’s about the UWP and ultimately about Dominica. We need a leader that has a broad popularity base amongst the electorate and somebody that is capable of getting the party in third gear. Frankly I don’t know who that person might be but we have at least another 2 years to find that person.

Most recently St. Lucia dismissed a useless government but Dominica is incapable of doing so. One would have thought that after the Pinnard affair the electorate would say, enough is enough. Not so in Dominica. Corruption prevails and Skerrit is here to stay because the majority of Dominicans like their handouts. I am afraid Dominica is on a road of no return.

Of course they are two different countries.
Ask yourself, how many St. Lucians live and work in Dominica and compare that with the number of Dominicans living and working in St. Lucia.
Then we travel and wonder why these countries are ahead of us in almost every facet. I’m sorry but I can’t see any avenue to give credit. My scoring card is pretty simple; Health, Education and Ecomony.

I knew this was coming. Lennox has too much heat around him to be part of the campaign. He should have stayed well clear. His style of campaigning is also almost always negative. A strategic shift was needed to win this seat. Dominica is a one party country and the criticism of the government just not working so the other parties need to focus purely on policies going forward. We need another competitive party to keep labour accountable and UWP is lacking direction. I’m starting to think that Lennox is the wrong guy because his style is to press forward with failed strategies. There seems to be no plan B, C or D.

  25. Boy! O boy! O boy! It is now 2:30am in Toronto; I had an early evening sleep; work up at about 12 midnight and I made sure I did anything there was to do before going online; because even if I know the Authority of God, I am still human so I was nervous to open DNO News Site, to see the result of this election.

And boy! O boy! O boy! The News headline was like a glass of fresh chilled water–that is the best way I can describe the relief I felt. Well of course! I shouted thanks to God, for I know that He is in this, for the sake of us God fearing people in Dominica –there is no doubt in my mind about this; for I trust Him too much–to doubt Him.

This victory is not about Labor Power; it is not about Skerrit Power; it is not about voters power; but it is about God\’s Power, showing us that He is the Primary Authority and the Leaders or Government of any Nation is by His will–and His control will be glorified through them come what may

    • Denise Charles, you, young and beautiful lady, I say congratulations for your victory, and know that God has assigned you to this post, for the sake of His people in Dominica. Remember to humble yourself in all you do, for He wants the glory, it is not yours; but you will be exalted at His appointed time–just keep you hope in tact for those days .

Pay attention to God\’s commands as you go through you daily routines–much more so now than ever– and keep in mind that the wisdom, the understand, the knowledge, the strength, or the vitality in you, are all His blessings to you, as He Himself will be doing His work, for the welfare of our people in Dominica–through you

You are God\’s workmanship to do this work, which He prepared for you –do it by His Grace.

But most of all, I know that PM Skerrit is a man who depends on God\’s guidance, and God is pleased with him, that is the reason for his victories–respect his leadership and follow his ways.

      • And one more thing! All of you, followers of UWP, who continue to label us followers of DLP as fools, idiots, brainwashed, and the ugly this, that, and they other character–especially that insane old creature from LA, do you all believe in God?

So look into your heart, your mind, and your conscience–consider what you hear about yourselves, pertasining to God\’s Authority

Now do you really believe that He would allow the devil to have victory against Him? There is no way this can happen–not even once!

But PM Skerrit and his Governent has had the victory time and again, right to this moment. There is no way that God would fulfill the desire of individual like you all.

So then the only change that is needed in Dominica is the attitude and conduct, which you people maintain. All of you need discipline and training of the mind.

Now thumbs me down by as many as you can–I shall speak and my speech will be loud and clear, that is all that matters to me.

I suggest that you read my last post again and try to ingest my message, but here is the 3rd. and 4th paragraph to save you the to read the whole thing–that is the point I want to flourish that dull mind of yours: Here it is

        (2) Now do you really believe that He (God Almighty) would allow the devil to have victory against Him? There is no way this can happen–not even once!

        (3) But PM Skerrit and his Government has had the victory time and again, right to this day, June 7th 2016. There is no way that God would fulfill the desire of individuasl like you all.

And now I rest my case!

In time to come, Dominicans are going to beg Mr. Lennox Linton to bail them out of the their misfortunes. In time to come, Skeritt is going to be banned from visiting the United States of America. In time to come, Regie will no longer be able to dance on a DLP political stage and will ask Miss Monell Williams for forgiveness. In time to come, many Dominican passports will be found in the hands of members of Isis. In time to come, Mr. Lennox Linton will be made Prime Minister of Dominica, selected by a group of prominent Dominicans, to bail out the country from all the corruption. In time to come, the family of Skeritt, will relocate to the United States without him. In time to come, the people of Marigot will revert to major civil disturbances. In time to come, Savarin will be asked to evacuate the Chinese built Palace. In time to come, all the hotels built with pass port money will be at a stand still. Finally, Dominicans from all works of life will try to live as one.

Guys, you need to respect the wishes of the people. Both parties presented their platforms and the people chose to elect the DLP candidate.

You can say what you want, but people vote for what they think is in their best interest. You have to respect that.

UWP has to look within to see what is it about their approach that is not as appealing as that of the DLP. You cannot just blame people for not accepting your platform.

The results of elections in Dominica is continually illuminating the fact that ignorance and illiteracy are crippling the development of this country. In my humble opinion we should feel sorry for the electorate and strive even harder to lift the standard of education in this country to the point where people are empowered, self reliant and independent of socio-economic factors that predispose them to clutch at straws and forsake their civic and moral responsibilities.

Come on people

    • Chief Jaco
      June 8, 2016

Insider, let’s talk about Marigot Hospital. Government needs to launch an investigation into the Marigot hospital. Why are cleaners hired and the hospital is not clean. Why is material sent to the hospital to clean and maintain it and that material ends up in the workers bags to clean and maintain their homes instead. Why is it that wood ants and cockroaches inhabit the cupboards among medicines. Why is it that the place of work of the very same health worker who go out in the district to closed down unhealthy business places is more unhealthy than these business places?
So Marigot people all you expect Skerrit to come to Marigot and sweep, mop, pray with insecticide, clean, sanitize, and dispose of all you rubbish for all you? Wait still. All you not ashamed that the hospital close down because of rats, cockroaches and mosquitoes infestation? What story does that tell about all you?

Don’t ask the people of Marigot. Ask the minister of health, it is his responsibility. In any other country he would have to resign but in Dominica it’s somebody else’s fault. How pathetic my fellow countryman are. Sometimes I am ashamed to be a Dominican. This useless government gets away with everything, safe in the knowledge that they can buy any election.

And so many more questions you could have responded and presented to the Gen. Public instead of a meager six sentence piece. And no blame will go towards the notion of preliminary results. There will be no recount so get on with it….
So the results (2014) show Voters registered: 3459, DLP: 1326 votes, UWP: 822, valid votes:2148, invalid votes:34, voter turn-out:63%.
Now lets compare the 2016 bi-election….

The DLP basically maintained their support. In this by-election, the DLP candidate obtained (preliminary) 1342 votes compared to 1326 votes in the 2014 General Elections. The major development in this by-election is that the UWP candidate has received significantly less votes (preliminary 560) this time than in 2014 when he received 822 votes. What has happened to Higgs Adams’ support? His opponent has received more than twice his number of votes. What does that portend for the UWP in the constituency? What has happened to their supporters? There has not been a shift to the DLP since the party received the about the same number of votes. There are questions the UWP must seriously give attention to.

I am really sorry for my people in Dominica. Now I know the people of Point Michel do not care about children, so I cannot leave my children with them for the summer vacation is coming up.

I feel confident when you assume your elected responsibilities you will do your utmost for all your constituents with no exception. You will not practice impartiality. I visualize they too are looking forward to you fulfilling your duty accordingly.
You have campaigned and won a clean election. This is most pleasing to God who is very much with his Dominican people, loves them and wants what is best for them.
God be with you and bless you during your elected tenure.
As an afterthought, hopefully also prompted by the Holy Spirit, :) keep Dominica Christian and morally good as the majority of us knew it especially in those days.
I love Good News. I still love Dominica and want what is best for it, even at a distance. Do you fellow Dominicans wherever you reside?

      Face the facts,
U will realise that DOMINICANS are lacking in every thing and where they are very good is in corruption,
every body knows that the fire of 2010 to kill 2 elderly citizens was done by THEM, the 3 VILLAS are theirs, the BIN BOBOLL was done by them, they are prostituting the young women of D/ca. etc.
but one thing I know is that WHO LAUGH LAST LAUGH THE BEST, and proverbs chapter 15 and verse 3 says and I quote “the eyes of the LORD is in every place BEHOLDING the evil and the GOOD”

    • Aha
      June 7, 2016

Hmmm unless a man be born again he can not enter into the kingdom of God, I sure hope she is because how then can she keep Dominica Christian? She was on stage with a man accused…….. and she praised him.. after this election minors will be scared to come forth because our leaders simply do not care.

Do you know that Elijah and Paul and all the great men of God stood up to unrighteousness? They preached openly and called leaders out on wrong doing? They were chased, imprisoned and beaten!!!!!! Since when is being silent a godly thing. I am just simply amazed by our idea of Christianity today. No wonder our world is in the state that it is. People are not. standing up for God. They are at PEACE with the world! People who speak up are “hating”. Well I rather be called a hater and be at peace with God, than to be at peace with the world.

@Face the Facts: You need to return to your loved country to see how “nice” it is.
You also need to tell your corrupt leader to stop giving money to win votes. You guys sit outside and claim or try to make believe that every thing is okay and the process is so “democratic” but time will tell.
God hates corrupt and evil minds!! Envelopes were sharing like hot bread. Is that’s how we enslave our people simply because they are poor?

    June 7, 2016

Love and unity prevailed over hate, division and animosity. Did we learn anything meaningful? In all fairness if there isn’t a strong leader the candidate will not be strong. Your candidate was recycled merchandize, therefore, the outcome would be the same. At a time when we have so much broken families, you are giving us a person who is openly???? That’s disrespectful, can we tell our young people to mimic such behavior? Where is the respect for family lifestyle! Now we need healing.

    • Face the Facts
      June 7, 2016

Broken families primarily have to do with those families from within – them, their families. Blame no one else for broken families. This is something you must learn since you do not have the sense to know it.
Let me further inform you. God will hold them responsible for breaking up their family. If you think the government has something to do with this, think again. Some of you are too naive. You much to learn.

exactly, Dominica cannot be St. Lucia. St. Lucians change governments real quick when they mess up. They don’t worship politicians. Check the economic results over there and real development over the years. International Airport…air canada…jet blue…look US Airways increasing flights there.
