Deputy Leader of the United Workers Party, Claudius Sanford, has described Ashton Graneau’s announcement indicating that he may not seek reelection in the Salybia Constituency in the next general election as the precipitation of the “Columbus planned” politics of prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit.
“Like Columbus with his Bible in the left hand and sword in the right, Skerrit cons the Kalinago Territory with rum, plywood, lies and promissory notes to the people,” Sanford told DNO.
Graneau hinted on Wednesday that the possibility exists that he may not seek reelection. He stated that there are many ongoing projects that need to be completed in the constituency and concluded that the people should be the judge of his performance.
But Sanford said he is disappointed in Graneau’s performance as member of parliament and accused him of “placing his party before the people.”
“He will not tell the people of the Kalinago territory that he was reprimanded for saying that Government received $15 million from the Venezuelan government on behalf of the Kalinago people and $6 million is unaccounted for,” Sanford stated.
He pointed out further that Graneau did not tell the Kalinago people that he was silenced by the Prime Minister when he inquired in Cabinet about the actual amount received by the Venezuelan government and also that he was not supported by his colleagues in Cabinet when funds for the Magua road linking Atkinson and Bataca was allocated to another constituency by the minister of constituency empowerment.
“He will not tell the Kalinago people of the undermining of his tenure from within the Ministry of Kalinago Affairs to show him as weak, and incompetent. It is an insult on the dignity of the Kalinago people by the Prime Minister to now discard Mr Graneau,” Sanford stated.
According to Sanford, Graneau has cast the Kalinago people before “the swines, wolves and vampires of the Labour Party.”
He urged the Kalinago people to rise up and realize that ‘change is a must and not an option.’
“I have stayed with you along this journey through the good times and the bad times and I am making myself available to lead you into an era of industry and equal opportunity for all,” the UWP deputy leader said. “I appeal to the people of the Kalinago territory to make this change, it is a must.”
Sanford highlighted that agriculture, training, and revamping the craft industry will be his main focus for the constituency if he wins the next general election.
“I bring to the table a leadership that will re-energize and develop and agricultural sector especially around an industry in the Kalinago territory where the cassava industry is doing very well. We will definitely look to sustain the craft industry and the tourism industry and also look to provide skill development training for the young people,” Sanford said.
The Carib people need to be careful for who they vote. From reading the comments posted. Many of u believe that if Claudius is elected since he is the deputy leader things will be better for his people. America has a black president who is serving his second term however black people are still living on the streets,and jobless. They are still the one under served and under privilege. Yes history was made but the lived of many black people have remained the same

After the death of my hero, Rosie Douglas, Pierre Charles was made the leader and PM of Dominica. The late Pierre Charles soon passed shortly after becoming PM. Moments after his death, the spokes man of your DLP party, Tony had this to say on DBS Radio: Before his death the PM told me that it was not what the opposition UWP was saying that was hurting me but what my own cabinet members did to me. He said “They stabbed me in the back and when I stretched my hand to them, they ignored me…” Ask Tony who exactly Piero was talking about and remember to ask him about the famous meeting in St. Joseph. You know who betrayed him and all of Dominica right? Words of almost same effect were said by top party official about Rosie Douglas, moments after his death. Rosie was on a long trip and when he returned to DA, he called some of his top DLP friends and fellow cabinet members, but they ignored his calls and next morning, he was found dead at home. Talk about betrayal like Judas betrayed Jesus?
Furthermore, UWP elevated Mr. Sandford by making him the Deputy Leader of the party at a time when UWP had a good 6-7 seats in the house. It was the Kalinago people that listened to those who have a record of political betrayal and instead voted DLP. If they had voted Sanford, the Kalinago people would made history because Sandford would be made the Oppositition Leader instead Of Mr. John, which would be first time in our long history, a Kalinago person would hold that position. Not Only that, but if only they had voted him, Mr. Sandford would be the Party Leader today and would have been in a position to be the first Carib to ever lead the country. But instead of voting Sanford the Kalinago people voted DLP by over 200 votes. But the UWP still have faith in Mr. Sandford and the Kalinago people and demonstrated that by renaming Sandford as Deputy leady for a second term. So stop your trash and nonsense. This fact was so obvious when PM Skerrit had this to say during a ground breaking ceremony for a resource center in Sensei on August 2013. “There are some who have insulted you and say they can get you for rum and corn curls but government has offered you developmental projects. Projects geared towards the sustainability of the Cairb people,” he said. Notice the accomplishments Skerrit himself highlighted:“In the last 9 years we have built in excess of 87 new homes for the Carib Territory. We have also repaired a number of homes, improved their roofs and put in a number of washroom facilities…” he explained. You talk about maypwee and insult! Can you understand how much it sticks for a person to help you build your house, fix your roof, and put bathroom for you and then go on the street with a microphone telling that to the public?
How was Sanford betrayed by UWP? Did you know Sanford before he was drafted into politics by UWP? How was he betrayed by them? By not making him the leader? How foolish! Apart from UWP has any other political party elevated any Carib and made any one Deputy or a government minister that represents a department that serves the entire nation? After Sanford was drafted into politics by UWP, he was in less than no time made the Deputy Leader of the party at a time the likes of Prevost, John, our friend from Mahault and others were available. Sadly, the Carib people did not grab the opportunity to see the elevation of Sanford as the elevation of the Kalinago people, and instead, voted in another Graneau whose brother had failed and betrayed them for 10 years, by the same party and Skerrit. In fact the first time Sanford contested he went down by some 37 votes if my memory serves me right and by over 200 votes after he had been elevated by UWP. The Kalinago people must blame themselves for not being in a position where they could put themselves in the history book again by having the FIRST CARIP Prime Minister. Under Skerrit and the DLP the Kalinago people will never produce a political leader, deputy party leader, or a cabinet minister responsible for any of the top positions that all Dominicans would have to go to. I have a master degree and that’s a good thing. However, the only educated people are not just those with bachelors and more. Mr. Linton is very educated.
