Controversy brews over statement made by Thomson Fontaine

UWP's Dr. Thomson Fontaine
UWP’s Dr. Thomson Fontaine

Dr Thomson Fontaine, the United Workers Party candidate for Morne Jaune/Riviere Cyrique, today disputed a statement by Petter St Jean, Minister for Education and Human Resource Development and Member of Parliament for the La Plaine Constituency condemning Dr Fontaine’s comments made in New York regarding the state of law and order and race relations in Dominica. Fontaine said: “He quoted me incorrectly.”

According to St Jean: “Thomson Fontaine has painted Dominica as lawless and Dominicans as hostile to the Haitian and Chinese communities here. He has reported the youth in particular as seeking from the UWP the means by which to do physical harm to Haitian and Chinese immigrants and of being consumed by the illegal drug trade.”

St Jean went on to quote the youth as having told Fontaine that “the only things we want from you guys is guns…we are about to kill some people now, we are about to shoot the Haitians, shoot the Chinese. That’s the kind of reaction we get from young people, young men are selling drugs. The drugs come into Dominica, the government turns away, looks the other way and young men load these small boats and try to sell it in the other islands.”

Fontaine, who is currently in Miami as part of the UWP’s tour of Dominican communities in the US, told DNO that the young men – who come from Fond Cole – were expressing their frustration: “They included us, the UWP, as people that they wanted to shoot. It’s nothing to do with xenophobia.” He said that what he had told his New York audience was also something that he had discussed in the UWP’s recent “coast-to-coast in 25” tour about “the growing anger of our young people”.

St Jean went on to say that Fontaine’s comments, which “are being met with the condemnation of a growing chorus of Dominicans…were particularly harmful to the image of the Nature Island as a peaceful and welcoming tourism destination.”

For his part, Fontaine said: “We are not destroying the image of Dominica; we are highlighting the failure of the government – they’ve failed the youth miserably – failing to create jobs or recreational facilities. That’s the reality.”

St Jean ended his statement: “I therefore call on all Dominicans and in particular the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association to condemn this attack on the image and livelihood of Dominica and correct Dr Fontaine’s image of lawlessness and xenophobia.”

President of the DHTA, Jonathan Vidal told Dominica News Online: “It’s very unfortunate that Dr. Fontaine says things that are not true and I don’t see how he can expect or want to run this country if that’s what he thinks about it.”

My grandfather always said “Educacion se par lespew” or Education is nor common sense! this is not something he should disclose in the US, it was never mentioned here, he had never said he cautioned the boys/men…it doesn’t look bad only on the Government but on he and Dominicans on a whole! I think Dr. Fontaine used poor judgement in this whole thing period!

A word of Advice and encouragement to Dominica Youth. Please restrain your selves from doing any harm to each other and others in Dominica no matter who they are .Give everyone due respect. Injuring, hurting or Killing someone is Totally wrong. Please don’t go to those low levels. It’s not the way to go. It will not solve Dominica problems instead it will make things worse. Trying to find someone to talk to is a great thing; that way you may get the help or encouraging direction to a positive outcome or solution to what difficulty you are faced with.

We all get frustrated sometime in this life and this is why you must know the real issue here. Listen to the both parties and make your decision as to who you want to serve you. Make sure you are registered legally to VOTE for the upcoming general Elections; especially if you are in Dominica.

You are the ones who will make the difference; and affect positive Change in Our beautiful Island “DOMINICA” So now do this right by talking about your problems and issues you would like to overcome that you are struggling with . We sometimes do not give you enough credit for doing so much that is good and uplifting and respectful and positive but you should always choose to be on the right track. Don’t keep your feelings buckled up inside ….. SO “TALK IT OUT WORK IT OUT LET SOMEONE KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON INSIDE OF YOU” Peace always, God bless and Guide everyone of you.

So Dr. Fontaine echoed the sentiments of disenfranchised youth in Dominica, and now some people are beside themselves.
I can count on one hand at least five drug related murders within the last few years that are still unsolved. Hypocrites at home need to get a grip. If the truth offends, oh well. Do better!

I feel insulted that that the so-called few youth thatt Fonntaine claimed came from Fond Cole who made those irrresponsible statements represents the entire youth of Dominica!!!! You UWPites are hypocrite and wicked. The few young me i Fond Cole who hang in the streets have been doing that all their lives. That is a choice they have made. Why dont one of you UWPites go and offer them a job? Go and you will realize they do not want an honest jjob! Thee will always be people like that in the world!!

      January 20, 2014

Rather than condemn these young people outright a better purpose would be served by interacting with them and examining the underlying causes for such massive unemployment. Full employment may never be realised but we we should do everything possible towards that goal. To write off a large proportion of our people like that, leaving them with little or no hope is neither charitable nor in the long term interest of the development of our country. We do not have to remain a third world country, if we are determined to change that status. It is up to us! Complacency is not an option and I will support anyone with concrete and realistic plans to effect that change.

I really thought we were going to see a new kind of politics with guys like T Fontaine but its the same old business; criticise the country, make it look like its the worst and then ask people to come to invest. Remember guys even developed, flourishing countries have crime and frustrated people.

    • Malgraysa
      January 18, 2014

Trouble is that investors are not coming today. So we must give a message outside Dominica that we know what the trouble is and are going to clean up and their investments will be safe here.

When he and the numerous amount of people left Dominica, why did they leave? Was it this present Administration?

Some left and this present Prime Minister may not even have been born yet or he was a child.

Check and see how many Dominicans left Dominica in the 1950, 1960 and 1970 and then from 2005. Add them together and let us know if more Dominicans left Dominica in the 2000 than the 1900’s.

We should always show a balance when making points.

  14. Not me alone
    January 17, 2014

Truth offends and that’s why Petter St. Jean is disturbed. The evidence is there to back everything Dr. Thompson said. Why should I blame a person for saying what young people told him and what we all know is a reality? Do we not hear what Thompson said in NY on DBS? On Kairi? On Q95? Do we not read about the from DNO? Do we not hear confirmation from the police PRO? I know the media did not put it out the way Thompson did, but it quite clear that Dominica is much different today in terms of crime rate than what it was in 2005. We can paint it, polish it, lipstick it, perfume it, it does not change the fact on the ground.

‘For an aspiring Leader” to destroy the image of his country regardless if he was actually told those things is senseless and irresponsible.

It is clear that this man’s ego is bigger than his head and his agenda is not to build Dominica but to obtain power at all costs.

Every country has their challenges, but to you see their nationals destroying their country’s image; most patriotic people talk positively about their country and deal with their issues inhouse.

But then again, He has all the right to criticise DOminica as his tax dollars has not contributed to our development, dominicans are beneath him-(such arrogance) and UWP has made him feel like we need him.

We don’t need you Fontaine, please go back to your Queen’s palace and I hope on the way that you will be able to purchase some commonsense.

You are a Prime example of an “Educated Fool.”

If the Dominica dream need are speaking about poverty while they are on their tour of America they would have seen and heard the news about the economy of America. Certain stores reported that there sales were not what the expected during the Christmas season. Best buy and some others were disappointed. Before you try to insult me google it and check it for yourself, we are experiencing difficult times all over the world and it not only Dominica. I am sure that the team saw people in the US who don’t have a place to live and they are on the street. Every political party wants to become in government but we must stick to the real issues and stop making empty promises because times are hard, and do not make it seem that any one political party is Dominica’s savior. Let us stop playing politics and come together to build the country that we love and ask God to help because he is the one who has the ultimate power to save Dominica. I recommend that we stop putting Dominica down because power lies in the tongue and what we confess we come to pass, let us prayer sincerely and ask God to put in which ever political party He knows that we have Dominica and only Dominica best interest, and ask Him also to help us to accept which party He chooses be it Labour, UWP or Papi. I plead the blood of Jesus on my beautiful country and may it prosper and above all make it citizens know that Jesus is coming soon.

DLP and UWP should have some Debates instead of Mapwee. I am up for serious debates live when people can defend what they speak. What happens is that people take what others say out of context. Every one should be given a fair chance to say what they mean. I have not heard what Thompson Fountain said i would like to hear it do you know where to find it? I like to listen to both sides. I am sure that Thompson is not in agreement with this and surely discouraged this if he heard this from anyone. He should be given a chance to explain this

Tell St. Jean he may have only a few months to make up to the Dominican people for his miserable performance as a minister and even a teacher and stop fooling people with lies and his personal derogatory attacks. Dominicans , you just cannot compare the DLP with the intellectual Team of UWP. UWP is much better for Dominica’s future.
First of all Skerro and any of the Pal Reps are avoiding and one on one debate to bring out the truth about any issue in Dominica.
All DLP does is go on their controlled media stations, rant and rave to their dependent listeners and lie about everything.
But the educated people of Dominica who have a conscience can see the difference and are coming forward to express their opposition to the DLP propaganda.

I listened to the statement by Hon. St.Jean yesterday at 1.15pm in which he accused Dr. Fountaine of making certain “anti-dominican” statements. What is interesting to note, is that, during the same news broadcast, the acting Chief Magistrate,Evalina Baptiste? in remanding Alwin Bruno from Woodfordhill, who was involved in the recent robbing of the Woodfordhill Credit Union, lamented the fact that there is TOO MUCH CRIME IN DOMINICA. The very same thing that Dr. Fountaine said. Nontheless, the Honourable Education minister did not jump on her, accuse her of being “anti-dominican”; so why Dr. Fountaine?

I really have to feel sorry for those fellas. They really trying. I mean let’s face it, the UWP has been on an upward spiral for the past 4 months and it looks like the party is now an unstoppable force in Dominica’s political landscape today. Hartley Henry has to come up with something to instruct the DLP to do so they can remain relevant.

This US tour is hurting and embarrassing the DLP just as the coast to coast in 25 did. They really needed something to say to make a little impact. But my God, what a mess….i mean seriously…if you dissect every line from Skerrit…it’s all comedy central my brother. “these fellas went over there thinking people will not record them”….my brother Skerrit…what rubbish you talking? The meeting was not behind closed doors. They are live on Q95 and TDN Radio for the world to hear. That to me was the biggest joke is in this audio clip. And his supporters are so shallow, they can’t even identify the comedy and foolishness in this man’s speeches.

But hey, Hartley has to advise them to do something bordiay. Anything is something. So peter petter…please run to the media and jam thompson. Skerrit your next public appearance…jam thomson. Soon they will ask the Police Commissioner to condemn thomson. Then some member of the church will.

My question is, where that going? Them fellas only appealing to their base…they appealing to people like Cocom…Mammy..and the rest….that is who Skerrit has in mind when he making his nonsensical statements. The kinda people who are unable to identify the nonsense….but would amplify his foolish words and get excited about it. While right thinking people look at him and his politically ignorant supporters…and just laugh while shaking our heads.

The tide has really turned. I remember when Skerrit was on his high and how desperate they said UWP sounded back then. Garcon if is desperate so we were sounding back then, then we were really badly off! LMAO

Politics aside, Dominicans need to learn to hear it as it is.

Really, Petter? The youths are not frustrated?
Really? This is the first time you all are hearing about crime in Dominica?

I remember when i was a little kid going to school 6 years ago, i was naive enough to think no one had access to guns in this place, now you can’t tune in to any station for 5 minutes without hearing someone got shot.

Don’t say it overseas? Don’t say it at all? GET REAL! Those ppl in the diaspora who are less aware about the road that our country is being led down NEED to know what EXACTLY what they will be supporting when they come in to vote.

Freely YOU O LORD HAVE GIVEN Us And therefore We Should Freely Give. For In Doing So We Show and Share LOVE,WITH THE LORD And Others. Talking LOVE FOR GOD And Others/Your Neighbors As You LOVE You.

See Because We Were Helped and Showed LOVE,We Can Be Grateful and Become A Worker and Help WITH THE WORK OF SHARING LOVE. For These enhances The Work And Reaches EveryOne,so no one is left out,nor discriminated against, nor victimized, nor accused, But JUDGED RIGHTEOUSLY.

Sir, if so you have not Been A Worker and Part Of THE WORK Which Is Sharing LOVE.
What have you thought of Doing about This? For you Will Be Asked To Give Account Of All That You Have Been Given By THE GIVER And To THE GIVER.

For Doing so before Helping the youth may prove ineffective. Dno,You should Help and Stand against victimization, stigma and selfishness. Mr Vidal are You also accusing Dno of telling a lie? Sir were You there when the Youth Spoke? If not, what do You Think of addressing hearsay the way You do?
According to what was said by Dr.Fontain and reported, there were Witnesses. The Other Youth and Team Members.
Many People Working With Numbers are Careful and Accountable. For One incorrectly placed number results n unnecessary work.
Sir Mr.Fontain’s Work in the Media have been Seen as factual after much scrutiny. Sir do You Think Dr.Fontain would be Kept in such a position desired by many if as you said He speaks about what He does not Know? Dr. Fontain used I and Me interchangeable when he gave an account. Is that an error with the use of language?

Thomson may have to apologize or retract what he said because one track minds see and hear only one thing but alot more persons need to apologize to Dominica for the secret UNDER BELLY,them that fronting legal but deep in illegalities.Hypocritical mockers ,fire bun.Do as much as you want but it will never be for as long as you want.

What image do people get when our leader finds it necessary to being driven around in a tinted armored vehicle with armed police detail everywhere he goes? Who is he afraid of, who will harm him in our peaceful country.
What message does this send when a man so loved by his people has to do that? Explain that to us Petter.

Who is the Petter man condemning, the youth for making such a ridiculous statement or Dr. Fontaine for repeating the statements made by the young man . The A team has had a very successful tour so far and that is the only comments coming from the half French man . This is the politics of untruth Mr. Lennox Linton and the UWP have been trying to stop. By the way, has Petter commented about the million of dollars which were allegedly distributed by the Prime Minister’s lawyer.

After having read all these comments, I wonder what approach or side should I lean to. Certainly not the political rhetoric. I’ve previously commented on certain topics in reference to the views of the contributors and voiced that in order to have a better Dominica, the way that we think must change. Government will not fix it and I stress WILL NOT FIX IT, neither will religion. It’s time that men, women and children who love God arise and be counted. The enemy of our soul is raging like a flood because we are sleeping in the LIGHT! We read “when the enemy comes like a flood God will setup a standard” but how can God do such thing when we the believers are not making ourselves available? Too much politics in the church. This is a tactic of satan to divide us so that our prayers may be hindered. Can’t you see saints. Lets break the pricks of politics in the church and take back our country in the right direction for The Lord. And so we can confidently say together ” the kindom of God suffers violence and the violent takes it by force. Good night

United we stand. Divided we fall. Some of you must exercise broadmindedness and be less negative. There are ways to overcome all these negativities, bashing and war of words and to rise above them.
A meeting should be arranged whereby all who are interested could come together, cooperate to discuss the situation in Dominica as they perceive it to be and decide how it could be changed.
Note that there are some who do not want change, to change their mannerism. They are too bent on criticism which does nobody any good. This is also not good for the nation since nothing good can be achieved by such overall attitude.
The problem is, election is looming and the opposition has its plan to undermine the present government at all costs. They will stop at nothing to ensure that they are elected. This is the result of these negative vibes and statements by also those who support them. Can you not see what the problem is?
As for the youths, they should comprehend that they are not alone. There are others who are in similar positions who do not go about lambasting the government and also causing physical harm to others, wishing likewise and committing crimes. They should utilize their common sense if they have any that everything takes time and nothing happens before its time and that they must do their part to alleviate their situation and assist their country.
On the job situation, how many completed primary school and high school? They squeal that they want jobs but what type of education they possess and what are they knowledgeable in to obtain a job?
They must not blame the government especially when some of them are to be blamed for their situation, if only they would look to themselves and examine their conscience.
It would be a wise idea for the politicians in those ridings to meet with the youths in each constituency and allow them to voice their concerns, hopefully amicably and respectfully. Questions should be asked why are they unemployed and frustrated and what caused their unemployment. When we have heard their views then we can conclude what really is the problem and what caused it and try to rectify it.
Too often authorities as the government are blamed when those who blame them are the ones at fault in the first place. I am not gullible to believe otherwise.
With all your differences, varied views and personality traits, try to live in peace and harmony with your fellow nationals. This is the virtue of a genuine Christian and a practicing one at that.

From Mr.Fontaine’s first speech at Castle Bruce it was obvious he had nothing good to say about our beautiful and blessed country. We are generally a peaceful and law abiding people who respect law and order. let’s be serious even if someone is unemployed does it give that person the right to commit a crime. Even if you are frustrated does that give you the right to want to do someone harm? I grew up in the ghetto. went to school without breakfast, went to bed without supper at times when things were brown. we had no light and running water at home- did I drop out of school and then wanted all the latest phones and bikes and jewellery etc…..did I turn to crime to get it? Did I steal from my hard working, law abiding neighbours to finance my greed? Who do you blame for all this- the Government? Tell Fontaine if he is telling the truth why didn’t he report it to the Police? what advice did he give this ‘misguided young man’? these guys smell of desperation and woe to Dominica if these guys get into government! You know something I do remember that during the UWP regimes short stint in government there was no unemployment, no crime or violence among the youth, everyone had two jobs, there was no frustration…… it was utopia…..how I miss those days! • Francisco Telemaque
      January 18, 2014

There is no commonsense in what you said!

You people like to make comparisons with Dominica to even all the more developed places on earth; it is so ridiculous for one to believe that the youths all over the world are unemployed!

Dominica is a place where people are born, and live an entire lifetime without ever holding a job. Ours is a very small country with a very small population, yet, approximately 97% of our graduating students will never find a job on the island; and that is why our population growth remains stagnant because so many of our youths leaves Dominica to find work on the neighboring islands, North America, and Europe too.

The main employer in Dominica is the government, the probability of the government employing ever graduating, or none graduating student is absolute zero, there are not enough public, or private sector jobs on the island to share.

Someone have to take the blame for this, and so the government must be held accountable for the lack of jobs, and productivity. So, for you to make that ridiculous statement that youths all over the world are unemployed is nothing more than a very dishonest, hypocritical, and bogus statement.

If it is true that youths everywhere are unemployed, how come there so many of you ran to places such Antigua, Tortolla, Guadeloupe, and even small Montserrat..and find employment, nonetheless, are unable to find employment in Dominica.

And let me remind you the places I mentioned the Dominican youths go to find employment, their economy is not agricultural based, they do not indulge in planting bananas, and the likes.

So, think about it; your conclusion should be that Dominica is just a messed up place politically, and the powers that be are not capable of resolving the unemployment situation that slaps you in your face, such idiotic remarks you should talk about with people who share your backward beliefs!

“St Jean went on to quote the youth as having told Fontaine that “the only things we want from you guys is guns…we are about to kill some people now, we are about to shoot the Haitians, shoot the Chinese. That’s the kind of reaction we get from young people, young men are selling drugs.”

Only a fool would believe Petter!

Petter intelligent people know when they hear, or read a lie!

If the man said something you do not like say so; however, to expand, frame, or exaggerate the context in which he said it is not helping you. If you expand on it to deceive, it is going to backfire on you. The truth has a way of prevailing over a lie, many men have fallen victim to their own lies.

As a Dominica that truly loves Dominica I hate to hear that bad image of my beautiful country? However, who is right? If what Fountain said is false then we have to blame him and the UWP for painting a false image of Dominica. On the other hand if he is correct then we MUST STOP PRETENDING and face reality. Let’s take look at it in slow motion replay and this we do by reviewing Dominica this week. Please take note of the date and time of these incidents:

    Killing in Bataca
Dominica News Online – Monday, January 13th, 2014 at 7:35 AM
Police are now investigating an incident which led to the death of a man in Bataca.

The incident occurred around 1:00 am on Monday, according to reports. The victim has been identified as Rufus Tyson

BREAKING NEWS: Shooting at Tarish Pit
Dominica News Online – Monday, January 13th, 2014 at 9:50 PM
Police have confirmed that Trevor St Jean, 36, was shot dead by masked men earlier this evening at Tarish Pit.

    Attempted kidnapping in Salisbury
Dominica News Online – Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 at 9:57 AM

The police in Dominica have confirmed that they have detained two men in relation to an alleged attempted kidnapping in the west coast community of Salisbury on Sunday January 12, 2014 at about 2.00pm.

    Shooting at SilverLake
Dominica News Online – Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 at 6:05 PM

35 year-old Nigel Massicott of Silver Lake was reportedly shot by an unknown person in his left thigh at Silver Lake about 9:30 pm on January 14, 2014 while walking along a track in the area.

A release from Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, states that Massicott was transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital Accident and Emergency Department, where he was treated and admitted.
Meanwhile the police are reporting that Laudrick Alwin Bruno of Woodford Hill has been charged with robbery of the Woodford Hill Cooperative Credit Union which occurred on January 9, 2014. Over $40,000.00 was stolen and about $35,000.00 of this amount was recovered. Another man who was shot by the police during the incident is expected to be charged soon

Although its a very bitter pill to swallow, the question is, did these events take place in Dominica this week? Well according to slow replay and what was confirmed by the police they all happened. Now the next question is, Do we blame DNO or the news media for tarnishing Dominica’s name by reporting what happened? Absolutely not! The question is, should we blame Dr. Thompson Fountain for saying what we cannot deny? Well that would be hypocritical to close our eyes and pretend these things are far-fetch.

The Verdict: These incidents sure substantiated what Dr. Fountain said and therefore Petter St. Jean….You are out!

  67. January 16, 2014

•It dawned on me while listening to the UWP town hall meetings in the USA, that the rhetoric they were broadcasting was very perplexing upon closer analysis of the narrative of the party. The main focus to me is to sway the Diaspora vote in favor of UWP. Their mission apparently is on preventing the diaspora from accepting bribes to come down to Dominica to vote for a party the UWP deem oppressive to the citizens of Dominica. My point of observation in that scenario painted or propagandized by the UWP is that it is a moot point and would benefit the UWP. In other words all of this masquerading is about leveling the playing field in favor of the UWP. Come what may, a political party will be elected at the next general election, be it the incumbent government or the UWP. Question?will the UWP persue an agenda that is free of victimization, hatred, back biting, gossiping, underming and partisanship? If not, then our families will still be in the same position regardless of who wins. We will still send remittances, come down for carnival, World Creole festival, national day; things will still remain the same no matter who is in power. All that stuff is much ado about nothing. Change the topic tell us or concentrate on what you will do better for Dominica or Dominicans.

and Yes Dominica is a beautiful island , with all the beautiful spectacular natural features .

“And up to now the DLP has failed to put a stop to the struggles that everyday people are going through.
It is time for change in Dominica.”

The UWP failed to put a stop to the struggles that everyday people were going through from 1995 to 2000. that is why they were kicked out of office, their plan was not working. What is the new plan?

Once again the adeptness of the DLP propanda machine in the creation of information to divide the people. The ministers are never available to answer pertinent critical question on national issues. Usually answering “no comment”. Now like front soldiers someone like Petter St.Jean, are given an opportunity to prove his loyalty to run loose, as well Dr. Damien Dublin. The last time we saw Gloria Shillingford and the usually mute Kelver Daroux and company proving their loyalty in the “greedy needy” melee. Am sorry here but they are not honourable. When are we going to have a debate? We sure need to go the next level. I am sure if the statement that was butchered by Petter and Co. about late 2013 they would be saying that the latest shooting and stabbing and robbing was a consecuence. Things are economically bad in Dominica indeed, according to Dr. Fountain. The facts of negative population growth and low crime rate are available for Tourist information.

As one of many proud patriots I am grieving for our country Dominica. So beautiful, rich and pure. I support the deep and passionate concern of Dr Thomson Fontaine and his team to come forward to rescue our country and its young people. I have witnessed the decay driving through some of the villages. It’s not a joke. Therefore I will say the young people were venting their frustration and desperation to the listening ears of Team Dominica. Dr Fontaine only conveyed the cries of our young unemployed. Thank you Sir!!

Petter St Jean is frightened, scared to death of his power quickly eroding from him. Come the next election he will be HISTORY, so he has to create something to bring attention to himself.
The crimes committed over the last few days substantiates Dr. Fontaine’s comment.
Kidnapping in Salisbury, fatal stabbing in Bataca, fatal shooting in Tarrish Pit, shooting in Silver Lake, armed robbery in Woodfordhill, and Thomson should not say that the young men are asking for guns to kill?
Come on Dominicans, the situation in the country is desperate and crime is on the interest. Petter St Jean should take a good look at himself instead of insulting Thomson. The truth offends.

So Mr. St. Jean is not DENYING that we have these problems, he is suggesting that someone vying to make things better should not Share and Discuss them?! What sort of leadership is that?!

No wonder the rates of crime, sexual exploitation and child abuse is so high in Dominica! The Social Welfare Division had an article out a few weeks ago saying they are besieged by the problem and not sure what else they can do but pray. Well, first we need to talk boldly about issues troubling our youth so we can all be enraged and forced into taking action!

Election or no election, this is just absurd. Too many people are asked to remain silent on issues in Dominica. I have no idea how this started but anyone who thinks this is what will improve our tourism sector needs to go back to the drawing board. Shame on you Mr. St. Jean! Shame on you DHTA. Fontaine said: “We are not destroying the image of Dominica; we are highlighting the failure of the government – they’ve failed the youth miserably – failing to create jobs or recreational facilities. That’s the reality.”
Petter St. Jean is discussing matters that he and his government and friends should be debating professionally in Parliament and they, St. Jean etc should be tuned to the reality of the situation on the grounds affecting our young people and families. I am within the government system, or ….stem and we raised this issue of youth ruthlessness, crime, vagrancy, poverty, etc etc all the time but they have no clue how to deal with it, let alone to listen and understand. Fontaine is the whistle blower and he and UWP are rocking the boat of Labour`s poor governance and they are shaking. Petter St. Jeans comments are unqualified and ridiculous and as a minister of a principle ministry dealing with our most vulnerable group of people, the Youth he should be ashamed of himself.
Our youth are in crisis, they have been ignored, they are shooting each other gang style method, they are out of school, they are on drugs, they are frustrated, therefore St. Jean is not in a position to lecture us on Dr. Fontaine`s credible information.
This minister and this government have lost all credibility to govern Dominica. Change is must.

this is a joke right? well if the current economic citizen programme, the countless innuendos of maleficence of those who govern, the wanton abandonment with which them dudes align with countries and individuals with shady characters has not impacted negatively on our image abroad then nothing said by Thomson et al can change our reputation… the truth is our reputation is already a poor one, that is why we seem unable to attract investors from other parts of the caribbean who seem to invest everywhere else… it is also evident that we are unable to attract serious investors irrespective of their country of origin, even in the case of China our benevolent sponsor, their only investment seem to be work on infrastructure, where the government pays for something to be built, nothing which adds value… no plants, no factories = very little manufacturing + extremely high utilities rates and lower wages than our OECS sisters also means smallest economy in the OECS. It matters not that we are the biggest land mass in the OECS, So PETTER, you and your band of cheerleaders should find something better to do, like maybe actually earning the salary you make. lol this guy is such a fraud its not funny

The DLP failed to get a handle on the big boys in the Dominican drug trade. That results in increased violence, illegal guns and a general upsurge of crime. The DLP had almost 15 years in government and what do they have to show for it? I heard the statement and it chilled me to listen and wondered how come DNO didn’t hear it or did not want us to listen to it on the site.

In my humble opinion the Minister response is correct.

Some of our responses reminds me of the school yard bully who takes a child lunch and when the child retaliates or cries, he is the one the teacher sees crying or fighting back and the bully laughs at the teacher because he did eat the little boy lunch.

Thomson must be laughing at all those trying to defend him because he knows exactly what he said and why he said it.

Come on people let’s deal with the real issues at hand and put that foolish partisan sick politics aside and put our beloved country first. Doesn’t St. Jean know that his own government appointed a commission on crime and anti-social behaviour in 2012? That this commission went to many communities in their attempt to address the state of crime in Dominica, is a fact! The Attorney-General was very passionate about the commission and was a lead spokesman in the effort. Doesn’t St. Jean know that? Doesn’t he know that his government reduced the tariff on the importation of CCTV equipment in Dominica as an aid to the private sector to fight crime? Doesn’t he know that his own government is passing a number of electronic evidence laws in Parliament in order to address the crime problem in Dominica? Doesn’t he know of the new firearm legislation to address the number of illegal weapons in the country? I think it may be evident that homeboy is not in tune with the actions of his own government. Petter St. Jean for a man who have preached and is probably still preaching the word of God, you must be very familiar with this very popular passage of scripture “And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” John 8: 32. You should know that heretics have used Matthew 11: 19 to discredit Jesus. They have deliberately misquoted the Bible in an attempt to advance their own false truth, and this is what you are now guilty of – Misquoting Dr. Fontaine. Petter St. Jean, trying to deny the truth that your inept and self-serving Labour party has failed the young people of this country will not change the truth. Where are the jobs? where is the enabling environment for the young people with potential to express themselves in creative, dynamic and socially positive ways? Your unscrupulous labour party gives hundreds of scholarships to students – most if not all of them are coming from families who support your party, and guess what? Can you honestly say that most of these educated young people have made and are making sustained positive contributions in areas of health, education, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing etc. We still depend heavily on the Cubans to support our health services; we depend on Chinese to build our infrastructure, Venezuelans to advise us on agriculture, Morocco to support our tourism thrust and we the people must say nothing and accept this level of dishonesty from your labour party. One other truth that you will have a hard time defending is, your labour party does not have policy on the granting of scholarships, to the extent that, students who have completed their course of studies are discouraged to return home because you have no jobs for them – this is the atrocious and dismal record of your disingenuous government . Since you are familiar with the Bible, you must be aware of Proverbs 12 :19 “ Truthful lips will be established forever , But a lying tongue is only for a moment ”

There is too much division and hate in this country. Election was called many years ago. The Labour party won the election and the opposition was never satisfied that they lost the election. It is not the Government that tell people to kill and rob people. It is high time that we take out that mentality and wait for Government to provide jobs for us. I am seeing the Haitians and Spanish people come to our country and work and sending money for their families while our lazy young Dominicans sit by the road side and plot to steal and kill. It is time that we stop blaming the Government for everything. To those that are saying Change is a must i do hope that they will not sing a different tune later on. Haitian come to Dominica and today have Dominicans selling food by pound. If you go to the market you have to buy Cucumber, dasheen and other products by the pound like you live in Antigua, St.Maarten or the US. My fellow Dominicans, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the comments made by one of our promising leader, as we seek to effect change. He got caught up in the moment and made this unfortunate statement. He miss spoke. That by no means reflects who we are as a party as we seek to put Dominica first and take it to a place of prosperity. We are still rookies but have the potential to take Dominica to places where it hasn’t been. Dominica and our people are better than what was portrayed. As a matter of fact in our beautiful country, there are just a few who seek to break the law like in many others, but our law enforcement officers relentlessly pursue them. We will do what all credible and honest men are expected to do. We say we are sorry. Thank you. God bless Dominica.

Thomson could have said that gun-related offenses are on the rise in Dominica and few here would blink because there is the general sense that it is so.

Instead, he could not contain his natural inclination to spew rubbish about Dominica in his puerile belief that in so doing he is harming Skerrit. What he conveyed to the world is far from the truth. This is what that angers so many Dominicans.

so why i not reading people like you writing about the things which make us look like a backward, lawless country? why is your outrage only reserved for when the opposition members speak? cause if you are truly only worried about the great reputation of our country you should be speaking out about actions which show us in bad light no matter who the perpetrator is… not selectively being outraged when certain persons speak yet silent when others say the same of worse. look the PM accuse the dudes of being funded by drug dealers lol no condemnation from you or your crew, i wonder why?

Thomson was repeating what a youth told him. It might not be the image we want to present but if the youth did say it, shouldn’t we be more concern about that than of Thomson saying it overseas? Like the old saying goes what we dont want to see in our yard we will see under our bed. We can continue to deny the frustration of the youth for political reasons but it will one day show its ugly head and we wont be able to deny again. Think Thomson is the issue still.

    • January 16, 2014

I any youth in Dominica mentioned something like that to Thompson what solutions did he provide to that youth. He could not name one. Betrayed? Stop putting your head in the sand. Thomson reported what he was told. It’s time to pay heed to the problems in this country and work to solve them rather than attacking the messenger every time. If the DLP Government was focusing on the real problems with a view to making things better, the country would be better off. The problem is not Thomson Fontaine but the increasing desperation of many people in the country and the poor governance and management of a government in power for fourteen years.

According to Thomson Fontaine ““We are not destroying the image of Dominica; we are highlighting the failure of the government – they’ve failed the youth miserably – failing to create jobs or recreational facilities. That’s the reality.””

Well, Thomson Fontaine, whether you was misquoted or not, that is exactly what you are doing. DESTROYING THE IMAGE OF DOMINICA.

I live in Miami. I hope you see this prior to meeting with the Dominican people here so you can reevaluate your speech. I intended to be in attendance, but I am glad that I read this before wasting my time and my gas.

Talking about Roosevelt is one thing but tarnishing our image is another.

I am in agreement with Jonathan Vidal when he say ““It’s very unfortunate that Dr. Fontaine says things that are not true and I don’t see how he can expect or want to run this country if that’s what he thinks about it.””

Bury your head in the sand if you want, but it won’t make the lawlessness that is currently raising it’s head in Dominica go away. And trying to make political mileage out of the statement is really showing the world that when Dominica has a serious problem, rather than meet it head on and solve the problem, we push it under the carpet out of sight and hope nobody notices, that will encourage investors and tourists.

The country should be glad that someone is shouting about it with ideas how to fix it.

The year is only 16 days old and already there is countless murders robberies,Murderers out on bail, attempted kidnapping, people taking the law into their own hands to recover so called stolen property distressing a whole community and the list goes on, but I bet you are one of those who constantly ask, what is happening to our beloved land. So go ahead and shoot the messenger and the tourist and business people can find out how awful law and order is when they arrive at Melville Hall. Only thing is they will have to wait till the next day to catch the next Liat flight out to inform the rest of the world about the dark secrete we’ve been keeping.

I was at the function and what is being portrayed by Petta and others is not what Mr Thomson said at all. I supported the Labor Party and I did not interprete the statement as Petta and others are.
I understood the statement mad as an expression of the young people against the great injustice in Dominica right now.
On my last trip to Dominica a few young people told me that they were frustrated and thinking of going into drugs. One young lady told me that she left college 4 years ago and not one job interview.
The reality is that the government has failed the young people and to try a create unnecessary distraction just to avoid dealing with the sad reality is very very unfortunate.
When Bob Marley said “I feel like Bombing a church cause I know that the preacher is lying” he was not necessarily preaching violence. Not only that many of us sing the lines of the same song. So if the youth says right now they want to shoot chinese and Haitians it is not a statement I as an adult would encourage but if I say that the young people made such statement am I the bad guy here.
Peeps this just subterfuge – a method of evading the real issue here. Unemployment and total neglect and abandonment of the young people of Dominica.
Notice that every bit of sensation created by the government side is always about nothing to do with the forward movement of the country. The administration cannot stand on it’s performance so they prefer stand on propaganda and foolish distraction. I guess this is the job of Tony astaphan who after all is said and done sits on the head of the poor people in Dominica and fly back to his luxury in Florida. Lennox Lawrence who is conveniently canvassing the area looking for every opportunity on boards, special interest etc. After all these men can afford to buy homes in Florida , London etc while the people in Dominica are catching rass.

If you understood the statement was made as an expression of the young people against the great injustice in Dominica right now that says a lot about your thinking. It also amazes me that you believe such statement to be true even giving reasons to give credence as to why you believe such statement to be factual calling it a great injustice against Dominica.

The young people you meet and spoke to on your last trip expressing their feelings to you is not an accurate assessment as to what you believe. The reason why Bob Marley singing“I feel like Bombing a church cause I know that the preacher is lying” does not convey violence is because of the character of Bob Marley and what he represented. It is the same with the young people you meet.I and the readers on DNO do not know the character or anything about the people who told you their felling,so why are you taking their statement to make an assessment saying that it an expression of the young people against the great injustice in Dominica right now, how silly is that. The last part of your comment is filled with so much political rhetoric that it points to your political partisan and the motivation for such comment.

The USVI where I live average 50+ murders for the past six years yet you don’t consider it lawless, to the contrary you are dying to go to that country, what, just because you want to bad mouth Dominica as usual?

Fontaine was simply commenting on what he was told by youth. It is true that our youth are angry and frustrated and trying to hide the truth to fool tourists is not going to solve the problem. I wonder where was the Hotel Association when the Prime Minister let loose a blistering attack on the Garraway Hotel? The Vidal comment is not limited to what was said by Fontaine but went into party politics and whether Fontaine is fit for government. These people just play politics and have no place heading important associations.

    • January 16, 2014

Fontaine is now clarifying his statement by saying a young man told him. In his speech he said Youth in Dominica, he made a general statement classifying all Dominican youth in a negative light.

We need to tone down the rethoric in verbal and print media which causes the harm, someone can express their views but how it is communicated and interpreted is another matter. Both gentlemen are on opposing sides are are defending their positions, they were at school together and are in different political parties therefore being in a small economies with so much scarce resources we should use the knowledge of both Men to build the country not playing one against the other for the advantage of the enemies. I heard the speech of Mr. Fontaine and he was expressing a level of frustration in the country he was not advocating violence and being in a community people have ways of expressing themselves that can be misinterpreted and misconstrued to achieve a particular purpose.
Both gentlemen are my colleagues, and I would not like to see what they express to be used and misused for political mileage therefore I cannot but encourage them to be responsible in what they say and print which will eventually cause more harm than what is said.

That is all a twist for your own political interest! Thomson was simply reporting what a youth told him. That’s the problem with some of you ministers: cover-up, cover-up, cover-up. With technologies in this day and age, everyone with a cell phone or a computer is a ‘reporter’ to the outer world. When crap happens you all want to just sweep it under the mat to protect Dominica’s image? Get up-to-date Mr. minister, you can’t handle the country like that. You are like a mother trying to hide a sexual abuse of her daughter to ‘protect the name’ of her boyfriend or family. Wake up Mr. minister, we are no dummies, we heard Thomson and clearly understand his message.

St Jean why are you guys such hypocrites and dishonest.
I was recently in Dominica and decided to hit the town. Friends and family members all warned me about being careful of my surroundings. They all alluded to the escalating crime in Dominica.

What I saw in Roseau with groups of young men hanging around looking at our every move made me uneasy – for the first time I felt so scared in my own country.
Driving through Portsmouth and Lagoon one could see the visibly effects of the drug trade. Friends I grew up with and went to school with were either selling or taking it.
I decided to go have a sea bath and again I was warned to be cautious. The Ross medical students have become continually disenchanted with life in Dominica.

St Jean with all these criminals walking the streets in Dominica you want to tell me that Dominica is a law abiding country.
Man this is sad. Instead of venting all you anger at Thompson why not try to change the situation.

This says it all to me – some things are said in certain context and forums which are then, hand picked and are being generalised by the DLP to propagate propaganda!

Though I appreciate that Mr Thompson was in a very open arena and should have known that such statements could be sensationalised and be misconstrued by DLP members and supporters and perhaps by people listening who may not understand fully the Dominican social environment, I also firmly believe that Mr St. Jean is placing not only to much emphasis, but is exaggerating the sentiments (which am sure are concerns or rather, as Mr Fontaine said statements made in his presence) – in so doing Mr St. Jean is doing more harm to the industry by publicising or rather highlighting (and am sure other members of DLP will soon follow suit)in such sensationalised manner a statement which was intended to highlight the expressed frustration of youths in Dominica.

The DLP has failed the youth and Dominicans. Those who listened to Thompson heard what he said. He only said what a young person told him because of the frustration of the youth. Petter knows the truth that this is what is happening in Dominica. The spin what was said to spread propaganda. They tell lies and do not believe what they say. Thompson was only repeating what someone told him. Those ministers are the ones destroying the country. They do nothing for the youth and the poor people. They have taken away their means of earning a living so they can go to the red clinic to beg and depend on them. Dominica is in a state of crisis and needs to be rescued. Team Dominica will help bring change to our country. The DLP government lacks management skills and they have brought the country to its lowest. These men are desperate because they know that they are involved in corruption and will do all they can to bring down the patriotic men. Look at the ministers and friends how they have become millionaires. They want to distract the public with these lies so they will not concentrate on the failures of the government and how they have made us poor but enriched themselves.

Petter St. Jean and Jonathan Vidal are deliberately distorting what Dr. Fontaine said to gain political mileage. Dr. Fontaine reported what he was told by some youth. The statement is that of the young men who made this statement. Dr. Fontaine was simply reporting what he was told. He quoted the young men to indicate the level of stress and despair that the young men said they were feeling.

Petter ST. JEAN HIMSELF IS UNDER ALOT OF POLITICAL STRESS so he fabricates stories to make members of the Team Dominica look bad in the eyes of the populace.

“Dr. Fontaine was simply reporting what he was told. He quoted the young men to indicate the level of stress and despair that the young men said they were feeling.”

Why do you think that Dr. Fontaine used that forum to “simply” report what he was told? The UWPWee’s trip to the States is built around one strategy: Increase support. One tactic is to demonize the DLP adminisitration. A second is paint the UWPwee as the potential saviours of Dominica. Each member of the dream team has sought to stick to this strategy. Mr. Fontaine has simply gone overboard, as usual.

The UWPwee should take heed that he does not further torpedo their chances at winning a seat in the next general elections.
