Newly-elected representative for the Soufriere Constituency, Denise Charles, was sworn-in as a parliamentarian on Monday, June 27th.

She took her oath before the house and congratulatory messages followed.

“I believe her victory in large measure is as a result of the observations of the people of that constituency that she is someone who will have their best interest at heart always. It is also a vote of confidence, appreciation and gratitude from the people of the Soufriere Constituency,” Hon Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit said.

Minister Justina Charles said, “I am strengthened and elated as a woman and I think that collectively the six women on the Government side will definitely demonstrate our ability as women to give good leadership to our people. It also speaks to our ability to address the many concerns not just of women. Denise will truly represent the people of the Soufriere Constituency and will do her utmost.”

The Opposition’s Monelle Williams added, “I hope that with you as an additional female member, we can see strengthening and amendments to Acts, rights and Bills that will serve the women and girls of this country. I thank you and congratulations again.”

“It has been an absolute pleasure working with Denise for this short period which brought about her presence in this House,” shared Minister Ian Douglas. “She has been a very focused, dedicated lady but her most important, attribute to my mind, is her ability to serve her people. Even before she formally entered this profession, Denise has been involved in the service of the people of the Soufriere Constituency and I believe that that is probably the most important ingredient of a politician-a life of service.”

The Hon Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alix Boyd-Knights, also welcomed the new parliamentarian.

She said, “It shows that we are making strides to put women in Parliament and acknowledge that women have a very important role to play in a country especially in leadership. Hearty congratulations to you and I wish you all the best. I have a feeling that you will live up to the expectations no matter how high they have been set…”

Hon Denise Charles responded by giving thanks to God, members of Parliament and her constituents.

She says a bright and prosperous future is ahead for her constituency.

Hon Parliamentary Representatives for Roseau Central and Roseau North Respectively, Joseph Isaac and Daniel Lugay also congratulated Hon Charles.

Millennium development goal number three calls for gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Since 1995, the global average proportion of women in parliament has nearly doubled to 22% in January 2015.

Globally, women still occupy less than a quarter of the seats in parliament which translates to one woman for every five men.

Hon Denise Charles brings the number of females in the House of Parliament to eight. This means Dominica reports 25.8% gender parity in Parliament.

Congratulations! Action speaks louder than Words. We go see.

  4. Denise Charles, my Lady; hold on to your words and make sure you will do them, knowing the force which will be behind you–I call the Divine Force, you already know who holds this Force.

Remember to stay humble throughout your walks as part of the Government; for God remains in control, but for His glory; He turns His back against those who claim to be mighty in their own ways –and without God\’s authority there is no exaltation; there is no victory.

If you have the gift of charisma hold on to it as well; along with your good works, it is a great asset which works to bind those whom you represent to your and you to them–that is the way Love works.

Congratulations to you, my Lady, I wish for you, all the best, for sake of Dominica and her welfare

IS THAT WHY YOU ARE ALL SO SILENT ON THE ISSUE OF CHILD ABUSE? YOU ARE ALL IN A POSITION TO ENSURE THAT LEGISLATION TO PROTECT OUR WOMEN ARE PAST YET YOU ALL SEEM SO COMFORTABLE WITH SILENCE AND EVEN EXALTING THE MEMBERS AMONG YOU

Quiet frankly I have no respect for the members of the cabinet of Dominica because of their silence and lack of effort on the behalf of our children. But, I have even less respect for the FEMALE members of this group, especially Justina Charles!

People of the SOUFRIERE constituency should be ashamed of them selves for voting the corrupt SKERRIT administration
In other words they are the one’s contributing to all the corruptions that are very obviously bold face in peoples eyes, what about the pwd. workers, it doesn’t hurt them? what about the Emmanuel’s from goodwill Christmas morning 2010 doesn’t it trouble them? what about the young man from marigot who worked at the airport and was fired by Skerrit, Badwill, and blackmoor, that didn’t touch them? how about the state of the economy, what about the Marigot Hospital, what about the west coast bridges the after math of ERIKA, it doesn’t touch them? It seems as though they only cares for a few sheets of galvanize and a few sheets of t1-11 plywood and a few $!!!!!! in their pockets well, well, well what a people
